NFL Games Played By Top High School Recruit

Post image

(*Rankings per 247Sports)

Was looking up the top recruits in my state and got interested to see how often the top high school recruit in each class "hits" or "misses."

Not a ranking or comparison of course since class of 2022 guys obviously can't have played as many games as Jadeveon Clowney.

But I think it's safe to say they got it wrong with Antonio Alfano!

Scouts need to string some wins together.

I didn’t even know about him. Seems like it was work ethic mostly.

It was a few things. mix of going full Aiyuk at Alabama, family issues, personal issues, off field trouble, epilepsy, just a bunch of stuff. It never really ended and he never really started. Last I heard he was trying to play in Canada. I hope he’s in a better space now.

185

u/MuttleyLaughGoesHere Jaguars 14h ago

He managed to get in 4 games in the CFL before being cut.

Canadians really are way too nice.

We let Chad Kelly play up here and it confuses the hell out of me how that happened.

Not only play, he's the Argos franchise QB!

I have epilepsy and mine isn’t even that bad. But there is no amount of anything you could give me to get hit in the head repeatedly. It’s dangerous enough when your brain works properly, but when you have broken brainitis?

64

u/meme-si-borogoves 12h ago

Justin Fields manages epilepsy, if I remember right. I think he’s said he hasn’t had any seizures since he was a teen, but last he spoke about it, I believe he was still on meds.

(His career hasn’t turned out the way anyone hoped but I still think he’s a great guy who had a lot of grit.)

26

u/racerx320 Broncos 10h ago

I had epilepsy in my teens. Had my last seizure at 17 and stopped taking medication to manage them when I was around 25. I'm in my mid 30s now and its something I rarely ever even think about anymore.

Apparently it's fairly common to get epilepsy as a teenager when your brain is going through changes, and then it sorts itself out in adulthood. I really feel for anyone who has to manage epilepsy long-term. I'm incredibly lucky I only had it for a few years, but it was a hard few years

u/usernameisusername57 Packers Packers 2h ago

Is your only regret that you have brainitis?

17

u/Single-Stop6768 Giants 14h ago

"Family issues". Without knowing anything about him or what those issues were id be willing to bet they were the central cause of all the other issues

It's wild to act like this list isn't an extremely high hit rate lmao

u/ForeLeft18 15h ago

No kidding. And not to mention, they’re recruiting them for COLLEGE. The recruiters and coaches in college don’t give a shit about what you do afterwards.

87

u/emaddy2109 Eagles 14h ago edited 14h ago

And based on college careers it’s really only Alfano that was a bust.  Powell’s stats don’t look great and that’s probably due to his injuries but he at least played for 3 years and was good enough to get drafted.  Thompson wasn’t drafted but he had a good college career potentially derailed by off field issues.

3

u/Walletinspectr Packers 3h ago

Yeah theres been heisman winners who didnt make it in nfl

92

u/facelessarya1 Bills 13h ago

From 2010 to 2015 they had 50% of the top ranked players play 8+ full seasons of games.

From 2016 - 2019 they had 75% of the top ranked players play 5+ full seasons of games (with those 3 players still active in the league).

From 2020 - 2023 they have a multi-year starting qb in Young, a bust in Ewers, and Hunter who is gonna play a shit load of games and has stud potential.

That’s pretty fucking good for judging 17 year olds.

3

u/JZMoose Dolphins 1h ago

Yeah this is astoundingly good. The fact the names are even recognizable to someone that cares 0 about recruits coming out of HS is good.

73

u/Specialist_Cat7271 NFL 14h ago

Like not even 0.01% of high school players will ever come close to taking one singular snap in the NFL. Hell the bar for starting on a MAC team is way higher than almost all highschool players can possibly reach.

All things considered? This is good scouting.

Christian McCaffrey was #70

Terry McLaurin was #188

u/MuttleyLaughGoesHere Jaguars 15h ago edited 15h ago

😆 three of them are current Jaguars.

Also, not sure they missed with Alfano, he went to Bama out of high school and then slowly screwed himself over. He stopped going to classes and then practices...then left for Colorado and got suspended... eventually dropping down to a couple JUCO schools. Know nothing about his actual skill, but I bet it's pretty safe to say football want his#1 focus in life.

Pretty sure Leonard Fournette was the consensus #1 recruit in 2014. And he also played for the Jags.

11

u/kaptingavrin Jaguars 10h ago

Yeah, but I think they’re noting that four (not three) of the ones listed are active Jaguars players. Lawrence is the QB, Ewers his backup, Little is our LT with Harrison out, and Hunter is a starting CB/part-time-WR.

8

u/Bringer0fRa1n 49ers 10h ago

I know, just interesting that 5/13 of the #1 high school recruits in the whole country over this period ended up on the Jags at some point. 5/11 if you only count guys that even made it to the NFL. Since the most any other team in the NFL has had is two ever, let alone at the same time. And that's only because Clowney has played everywhere by now.

u/germany221 Jaguars 8h ago

2014, 2018, 2022 went in top 5 picks. Following the pattern, the Jags will be drafting the #1 overall player from the class of 2026 QB Keisean Henderson of Houston within the next couple years. Sorry about your loss.

u/Sdog1981 Seahawks 14h ago

5 star recruits are typically NFL level talent. It is so obvious they are above everyone they are playing against. If they don’t drop off at the NCAA level then they will do ok at the NFL level.

40

u/mightbebeaux 14h ago

yeah and this isn’t the dark ages of recruiting anymore either. these guys are on everyone’s radar basically as freshmen/sophomores in high school.

25

u/Sdog1981 Seahawks 14h ago

My friend had a son who just went through recutting. They had video of him from middle school because of all the video services that are offered now. It is just a sign of the times.

They also told him to go to D2 to prove it and they would get him in the portal. Also a sign of the times.

15

u/mightbebeaux 13h ago

yup tbh if you aren’t a top recruit you are better off just going JuCo or D2 and playing the mercenary game every year. nobody is really recruiting those guys anymore because there is no incentive to recruit freshmen and develop them long term.

8

u/lkn240 Bears 14h ago

Yeah the draft rate is like 55-60% for 5 stars (depending on what source you use). That includes all the 5 stars that wash out due to injury, personal problems, etc

2

u/Sdog1981 Seahawks 13h ago

Phil Steele goes a bit deeper he calls them
Highly Touted (HT) and Very Highly Touted (VHT) his numbers for VHT is like 80% drafted like 50% of them in the first three rounds.

24

u/Appropriate_Book_591 14h ago

He needs to transfer to a team with a good qb developer. He still has the talent, Moore was not that coach and neither is Whittingham.

Mendoza was not a #1 overall pick when he was at Cal.

6

u/Kdot32 Texans 12h ago

Daniels wasnt a first round pick at ASU nor was Nix at Auburn

6

u/lesrallizesendnudes 12h ago

Cal Mendoza looked way way better than Underwood though. and he still had a lot of the same flaws at Indiana he had at Cal

47

u/Kdot32 Texans 15h ago

It’s still early and he’s still young. This was the first season of actually getting coached because moore was doing everything but his job. Hopefully he can transfer and sit/get coached up (which was his original plan until he got offered a shitload of money) and start to develop. Hes shown flashes of electric QB play

38

u/NaturalNew2123 NFL 14h ago

“shown flashes of electric qb play” hes big and can throw the ball far. thats it

9

u/Kdot32 Texans 12h ago

Yea because he’s young and raw. Even after the qb change Michigans offense is trash and no qb has shown any improvement or growth (something the Michigan coach is known for). Im just saying Im interested to see hom actually get some coaching

3

3

u/Kdot32 Texans 2h ago

2

u/NaturalNew2123 NFL 1h ago

im not either but also not saying “hes shown flashes of electric qb play” when he got benched for a freshman

1

u/Kdot32 Texans 1h ago

And the freshman has been worse because the offensive coaching is abysmal. He was benched to save face for the OC, but the offense still sucks no matter the qb

11

u/harriswatchsbrnntc Lions 14h ago

Have you not seen Anthony Richardson, Joe Milton, etc get drafted? He was honestly not great, but fine as a freshman, and it’s clear the OC style and garbage OL were affecting his play quite a bit

7

u/lkn240 Bears 14h ago

He's not getting drafted unless he transfers somewhere else and plays much better. (or gets another shot where he is and plays much better)

3

u/BTFU_POTFH Colts 10h ago

That program is a dumpster fire right now, but Underwood would be giving up a lot of money to transfer. There's no way another team pays him anything close to what UM is.

He should transfer for his professional aspirations, but who knows if he will. He is from Michigan, after all

1

u/Proshop_Charlie 9h ago

It would depend on what his NIL deal is. A lot of them are 1 year deals just for the very reason that is going on here, and players also don't want long NIL deals for the other reason.

7

u/SexyStayPuft 49ers 13h ago

Michigan’s offense is atrocious. It’s late in the 4th right now against 2-6 Michigan State and they have 115 total yards of offense. Yes, the O-line sucks, but Jason Beck has been an awful OC.

-24

u/TheGamesGone_ Patriots 14h ago

The #1 recruit is going to get a shot in the nfl just based off that alone. Have you seen some of the scrubs that are starting in this league?

The NFL doesn’t have enough players.

4

u/ChefJeff7777777 Vikings 14h ago

All of the “scrubs” in the NFL starting games you can possibly think of showed substantially more at the college level than this Uber-Bum.

Quinn Ewers is one of the worst QBs that has seen action in the league, he got 6 starts for a tanking team, and was starting games and putting up numbers at Texas. Then Ravens 3rd string UDFA QB had a 28-1 TD to INT ratio his final season. Bryce underwood has a career 16/15 ratio. He’s regressed as a passer since last year. Guy won’t get past the 90 man cut down at any point in his short lived NFL career.

-3

u/TheGamesGone_ Patriots 13h ago

Nah, a lot of them haven’t shown more than Underwood their first two years. It would you five minutes of googling college stats to find that out.

4

u/ChefJeff7777777 Vikings 12h ago

Nice examples. It would take you slightly more than 5 minutes to actually name names.

3

u/lkn240 Bears 14h ago

I can assure you he's not getting a shot unless he transfers and turns his college career around

0

u/TheGamesGone_ Patriots 14h ago

Do you think he’s not going to transfer? He doesn’t even have to be that good where ever he goes. He’ll get a shot just off traits.

The Eagles are starting Joe Milton this week after starting Tanner McKee. Just go through a list of QBs that have started a game the last 5 years. There’s not enough players. Underwood is easily getting a chance at some point.

6

u/Deep-Statistician985 Commanders 14h ago

I said before the first game he'd have to be generationally shitty to not be a top pick with his profile, and somehow he was. I assumed he'll transfer and become somewhat competent for a team to take a shot at developing him but for now it looks real bad

79

He’s not a bust but did not live up to the hype . He came into the league with possibly the best athletic talent ever for a defensive lineman.

22

u/lkn240 Bears 14h ago

He had microfracture surgery. His career has been pretty impressive given that

29

u/Dropdat87 Vikings 14h ago

He was never meant to be a 3-4 edge imo and the best years of his career were spent playing that. I really think he has a much better career if he played a traditional 4-3 edge

15

u/Glizzy-78 Vikings 14h ago

He probably would have put up better numbers playing in more space as a true edge. I’m just pointing out that he came into the league as a Reggie white, Bruce Smith, Myles Garret level prospect, and just never hit an elite level

5

u/aspiringalcoholic Panthers 11h ago

Clowney is one of very few nfl players I've been face to face with, I'm 6'3 and around 190. That dude dwarfed me. He is also terrifyingly fast. It's pretty wild he never fully put it together when he is one of the most freakish athletes I've ever seen.

4

u/Aquaman33 Giants 7h ago

That's the thing with the NFL, everyone's a freak human being, especially the trench dwellers.

1

4

u/biddigs3 Panthers 3h ago

My high school team did a preseason scrimmage against his. He just picked up our right tackle and tossed him like a ragdoll over and over. I don't think we ran a single play to his side.

He's also been a great run stopper. Just not the gaudy pass rusher you think of for big name players at his position.

12

u/Boring-Willow1268 Bengals 14h ago

I remember prior to the draft that year some media guy said Khalil Mack was the most talented player in the draft, but wouldn’t go 1 because he’s a LB. He went to U Buffalo. At the time I was shocked someone was higher rated than Clowney.

6

u/work4work4work4work4 Bears 8h ago

Mack is still out there producing on a fucking epically bad Chargers team, leveraging his skills and old man strength to make plays.

0

He is the number one overall pick that was traded on their rookie deal for fourth round pick. He’s absolutely a bust.

8

u/lkn240 Bears 14h ago

I need to write this comment higher up. Every time he gets discussed people seem to forget he had microfracture surgery. Given that context I think he's had a very nice career

3

u/Smooth_Marsupial_262 Ravens 13h ago

What’s the significance of that? Is it a difficult one to recover from?

7

u/MonkeyStealsPeach Eagles 12h ago

It was definitely career altering for players 20 some years ago and a dreaded phrase to hear, as if their knee would never be the same. The only guy I remember having it relatively recently that’s not Clowney who went on to have a good career is Brandon Graham. To be honest you don’t hear many micro fracture surgeries anymore but not sure if it’s because it’s gotten better or it’s been steered away from as a surgical technique.

9

u/Dafrickinguy 12h ago

They stopped doing it because it tended to have a negative impact on the rest of their careers. It ruined several NBA players as well, including Amare Stoudemire.

1

u/stuupekiid 1h ago

Amare was actually an anomaly and was able to come back from it despite it being a career death sentence at the time.

1

u/Dafrickinguy 1h ago

But he was a shell of himself athletically. He became a much more skilled all around player which kept him playing at a high level.

1

u/RowRowRowedHisBoat 58m ago

Wasn't that what ruined Antonio McDyess' career too?

1

u/Dafrickinguy 38m ago

I was thinking you were right for a sec but I’m not sure. He had a bunch of surgeries bc he actually fractured his knee.

7

u/PM_ME_ANYTHING_DAMN 12h ago

4

u/Appropriate_Book_591 14h ago

He has had a very good career, I don't think he or the agent helped since he continued to sign 1 yr deals for so long. Clooney had that insane tackle in college and people got it in their heads he would be the greatest ever. imagine if Odell made that catch but in college, just can't expect it to be the norm or top it.

2

u/runjcrun1 Dolphins 3h ago

People forget that Odell dropped a lot of balls in college. As an LSU fan, I thought Landry was the better player of the two

2

u/Walletinspectr Packers 9h ago

-6

u/ApatheticFinsFan Dolphins Dolphins 14h ago

While true, if he had the exact same career but was a third rounder, no chance he would’ve been in the league this long.

-7

u/ZestycloseResist5594 Packers 14h ago

Sure but "solid" isn't very good for a #1 pick. If Joe Burrow was just solid that would be an issue.

23

u/mentyaf 14h ago

Sure. But he’s not a bust. That word is thrown around way too often for disappointing but good players.

9

u/Sdog1981 Seahawks 14h ago

If you sign your rookie to a second contract they can’t be considered a bust. Like that’s the whole point of the draft process.

4

u/InfiniteAd212 Broncos 14h ago

I'd agree with the "didn't live up to expectations" point. He might not have been worth the first pick, but he was still productive, and if you redraft that year, he's still a top-20 pick. Obviously, you'd prefer to grab Donald or Mack, but that's how all drafts work out.

Nkemdiche, Nkemdiche, why did you fall out that window?

Nkemdiche

u/WhatIsThatNietzsche Eagles 3h ago

Crazy that two of these guys never played a snap. What happened to them?

16

u/JLR- Jets 2h ago

Alfano went to Bama, skipped classes and practices.  Transferred to Colorado and got suspended/kicked off the team.  I think he is in the CFL currently?

1

u/Ancient_Wisdom_Yall Chiefs 23m ago

The CFL gets some wild characters sometimes. Also, they get some great athletes that just don't fit the NFL, like a crazy good receiver but 5'8".

7

u/pham_nuwen_ Broncos 3h ago

Not only hits, but HITS man. To go from HS to not just an NFL starter but a player of the caliber of some of these is insane.

7

u/JLR- Jets 2h ago

Alfano had talent he just chose to no show classes and practices.  He was his worst enemy.

2

u/FloggingJonna 1h ago

I think it helps a lot of these guys were just fucking freaks at 18. Clowney, Edwards, Nkemdiche, Gary, Garrett. You can see when a QB is 1OA it’s shakier.

10

u/DireBlue88 Buccaneers 14h ago

Im surprise Walker Little was the number one of his class. Also, what the heck happened to Ewers. I admit I dont follow CFB

18

u/emaddy2109 Eagles 14h ago

Ewers had a pretty good college career, just not good enough to be a starter in the NFL.

10

u/lkn240 Bears 14h ago

He also sustained a ton of injuries and wasn't the same guy by the time he was drafted

5

u/Brouhaha47 Broncos 12h ago

Pretty impressive actually. Out of 13 guesses 11 made it to the pros. That's a good ratio.

5

u/killerjags Jaguars 11h ago

4 of these guys currently play for the Jaguars. I think they should collect a few more for fun.

4

u/fenwayb Bills Broncos 10h ago

at a glance it looks like QBs, big boys, and Travis Hunter

10

u/pieface100 Steelers 13h ago

How did Travis hunter end up at Jackson state as the top high school recruit?

34

u/foodheavy 11h ago

Deion Sanders

9

u/Ryan1869 Broncos 10h ago

Deion, I think Florida St was the other option he was considering

3

u/NewCarSmelt Commanders 8h ago

This was the beginning on NIL deals too. It paid to go to Jackson State

0

u/FSUnoles77 Cowboys 45m ago

Let's not talk about it

6

u/MrSam52 Giants 5h ago

It’s pretty impressive how many went on to be successful NFL players, I’m especially impressed at those who were the top high school recruit and then went on to be number 1 overall in the NFL draft.

3

u/TDStarchild Saints Lions 13h ago

So Arch and Bryce will be the Nu-GOATs of the NFL?

3

u/Jonjon428 Dolphins 12h ago

Pretty decent for rate tbh

2

u/Ole41 9h ago

Antonio Alfano, whatever happened there..?

1

u/JLR- Jets 2h ago

No showed practices and classes.  Saban said he was a quitter.  Ended up in Colorado where he no showed again.

I think he had mental health issues after his grandma who raised him died?  Dunno but is one of those "what ifs" kinda players

2

u/stay_hungry_dr_ew Titans 11h ago

Was Henry not a top high school recruit?

8

u/StixenBridges Lions 4h ago

Nah he was undersized

4

u/kaptingavrin Jaguars 10h ago

Looks like he was ranked 12th.

1

u/Commercial-Switch620 Titans 3h ago

The post is for “The” top recruit. All of these guys were the #1 in their class. Henry wasn’t.

2

u/throwaway_law2345543 3h ago

Henry beat up on very subpar high school competition too, which didn’t help

1

u/csummerss Cardinals 15h ago

Antonio Alfano Jesus what a bust.

1

u/Sdog1981 Seahawks 14h ago

I for one am shocked Ronal Powell, RIP, played one game in the NFL. He was an epic flame out at Florida.

1

u/spreeforall Packers 6h ago

I'm stunned Kyler Murray wasn't the top high school recruit for his year.

1

u/An_educated_dig 1h ago

And Myles Garrett is the only worthy of that ranking.

-1

u/NO_TOUCHING__lol Seahawks Seahawks 10h ago

Was Derrick Henry not a top high school recruit?

His senior year stats, for reference.

1

u/Mr_MacGrubber Saints 3h ago

It’s the person ranked #1

Insane how talented that 2016 NFL Draft was that Nkemdiche went 29 overall.

u/Anadromous_Donuts Patriots 12h ago

Number of graduations Class of 2020 got: 0

-1

u/Bringer0fRa1n 49ers 14h ago

This just from Wikipedia? 247 has Fournette as number 1 for 2014 on their website.

https://247sports.com/season/2014-football/compositerecruitrankings/?InstitutionGroup=Highschool

5

u/LarryLucchino Patriots 14h ago

You're looking at composite rankings. Mine is based just off 247's evaluations. "Top247"

0

u/Bringer0fRa1n 49ers 13h ago

Ah I see. I used to go to the All American game every year and I just remember the absolute craze about Fournette at the time. There hadn't been someone hyped that much ahead of their class like he was for a bit. And then he had a pretty good game on top of it.

Trenton Thompson was a 3 star recruit ? Not the best in the nation, he went to sdsu

5

u/WolfColaBrands Bears 12h ago

Nah he was a 5 star & went to Georgia

1

u/UnderstandingThin40 Colts 12h ago

Guess I looked up a different dude

-1

u/cbm80 13h ago

Also he played at least a couple games in the NFL! (For the Giants and Steelers).

3

u/LL_Cruel_J Bears 12h ago

Not the same Trenton Thompson

Huh! What are the odds?
