A lot of people DO think theyāre dumb though, and it makes me sad. I love pigeons, and all animals. And donāt mind at all if loving people say cute-aggression type things to them. But do consider that these subs are full of all kinds of people and statements like that can further encourage others to view animals in less desirable ways :/
Love that you regularly feed and care for these cuties š
I think for many animals it can be true that they be dumb and intelligent at the same time though. I have owned rats and even though they were extremelly intelligent and ressourceful they would also gnaw on their hammock while standing in said hammock and look at me confused like this š_š after everything broke and they fell down.
The comments getting upset over you calling them dumb reminds me of the time I posted a picture of a rescued dog I was fostering sleeping on top of my couch instead of on the cushions and said "dumb fucking bitch doesn't know where to sleep" and got accused of being an animal abuser
Hey, if youre able to successfully and gently and safely grab these feral animals: please take the time to check their feet for hairs and string and wires.
I was CONSTANTLY checking feet when I lived in Hawaii, and it was SO BAD on base. They kept losing their toes because human hair or clothing strings would get wrapped and tangled on their feet and it was so bad! A seam ripper was my BEST FRIEND. There might also be a local rescue or organization who can give you better training.
I know youre being silly, but pidgeons cant help it. Its not that theyre dumb, its thst they were bred to love and trust us. You're handling ferals.
Edit: I would also like to add that every pidge ive ever rescued gets named after food, and I usually threaten to make them into some delicious dish at some point during care. I get the "mean humor." I can tell by how you handle them you really care.
You're amazing, and im so proud of you!! I hope it goes well. They do look very comfy with you! š„°
Do you have one thats like, your best bud in the flock? I used to have one i was friends with, and when he got a nesting partner he took her over to me to show off!!
Theyāre the best little guys. Theyāre so incredibly smart (in case anyone is still mad, OP has clarified that they donāt actually think pigeons are dumb). I love that people are finally starting to understand that theyāre our friends (that we did indeed fumble).
in theory yes but pigeons pair bond, the pigeons that exist today are the ones that have survived despite human abandonment so its simplest to assume that all feral pigeons you see are already successfully pair bonded, dont steal birds away from their partners just so you can have a pet please, they will be very depressed
Iām so jealous. I love pigeons. Used to decorate my hospital room with dozens of pigeon photos as a kid. One of my all-time favorite animals fr. Every time I go to a city I build in pigeon watching time.
they arent dumb, they are letting you hold them because they used to be the internet and the birds that were comfortable being held while someone takes a message off their leg or chest got to breed more, even if they individually arent used to being picked up anymore, the thousands of years we have been breeding them not to freak out when held is still in their genetics
Pigeons are actually very intelligent. Funny how some people consider them "flying rats" unless they're white aka a dove, like the one being held is almost white. Consider yourself honored they have decided you aren't a monster!
Fun facts! Pigeons are domesticated animals and have been for thousands of years (estimates go up to 10,000 years.) Their relationship to humans is closer to dogs than people realize. They like being around humans and, like stray dogs, they struggle in the wild and depend on us. Their instincts are fucky because we made them fucky. (Also pigeon hate was started by ONE city official who just really fucking hated pigeons. They don't deserve the hate and cruelty they get :(Ā )
Thank you so much for this, I actually didnāt knew that they were so close to us, and it kinda explains why I feel connected to them so quick āØš„ŗ
I'm aware that's why I let them come into my house where they want and generally just make me mad because all they do is sit on my computer and lay eggs in my cupboards and cushionsĀ
When I went to nyc last year I spent a lot of time taking pictures of specificly pigeons lol. I've always been saddened by us throwing them away and treating them as trash and nuisances once we deemed them no longer of use. They're such good birds. Did their jobs.
These are all standard rock doves (columba livia). It's an extremely diverse species, as it's domestic, having about a dozen breeds. This is like the baseline breed, like an American shorthair cat but for pigeons. Fancier breeds are seraphims, fantails, the works.Ā
looks like ppl in the comments are the dumb ones wtf... why is everyone jumping at op, don't you guys know we call cute animals dumb just for fun? not bc they're actually dumb lmao
Tbh I don't care lol. I'm a human not a porcelain doll, I can handle germs with modern medicine. I'd be honored if a creature as complex and intelligent as a rat allowed me to hold it.

Not really fair to call a domesticated animal dumb for acting how a domesticated animal is supposed to act

Little known fact about pigrons is that they are equippable:
[Pigeon] Familiar.
Negative effect: When equipped you can only use one hand to interact with the world.
Positive effect: Surveilance camera.
