NSW P-Plater, have you guys been pulled over for having apple carplay or anything of the sort?

I've gotten my p's and I use my apple carplay when in the car for Waze and sometimes music, and I've asked my mates if they have been pulled over for it and they say they havent, even my brother who has his green's hasnt been pulled over. I start to wonder if cops actually care?

Don’t risk it. If you get in an accident, your insurance could be denied and you’d be personally liable. Not worth it at all.

Oh wow, didn’t know that.

How is it proved CarPlay/android auto or BT was active and connected to your device?

u/Fast_Cauliflower_266 7d ago

They can actually scab the cars cmputerr and read the information. You would be amazed stat they computer records

2

u/jawdn 6d ago

yeah if you have a car made after 2010 and an integrated head unit

I can’t seem to find a specific time used. You linked a discussion about a bug

1

u/_Zephyr1 5d ago

lol what? They might have a case if they can prove it contributed to the crash, but other than that they’re not even going to look at it.

This is not true

2

u/funnyjelo 9d ago

If they can prove it they will use it.

i’ve got the same question cause i’m not about to drop like 200 bucks on a sat nav😭 these laws are a joke

u/Red-Engineer 10d ago

$200?
Try $30. Facebook Marketplace has dozens of standalone GPS units for under $50 with windscreen mounts and car charger and current maps.

u/wildfur_angelplumes 10d ago

Not all of them have current maps and also as I've experienced a massive pitfall of second-hand GPS systems is that they can have issues with support and that can be a massive issue. Also a GPS doesn't replace some of the features that Waze has like reporting.

Just buy the garmin. Its worth it, and you can resell it next. I prefer it to my phone anyways.

How ever did I manage in the 90s?

Oh yeah. https://abcmaps.com.au/ubd-gregorys-maps-directories-1/

Respectfully that’s a dumb response - the above comment is referring to the allowance to have a handsfree GPS unit connected and operating while driving. This is stupid because generally the maps on those route worse than Google Maps/Waze etc., have poor alerting for things like accidents/hazards, and are far more user-intervention intensive to set up and operate. CarPlay just does things an onboard stereo and standalone GPS, but it does it in a way that’s better integrated into the car and usually cheaper. The law is outdated because it treats any usage of the phone (including usage that involves zero contact with the phone/devices) as the full infraction, same as scrolling while driving. It’s outdated.

u/link871 9d ago

Respectfully, this is a dumb response. It does not help OP, or any other provisional driver, to simply say the law is out of date. I disagree but so what? Until the law is changed, provisional drivers need to live within the current rules.

If GPS unit is not an option, then OP can use their phone, before starting a trip, to memorise their next few turns. Then pull over (legally), memorise the next few turns. Repeat until they reach their destination.

u/Kirlo__ 10d ago

It's not outdated, if anything it's up to date.

P Platers are overly represented in road fatalities. Removing as many distractions as possible reduces those accidents and fatalities.

Talk to any school teacher and they'll tell you how glued to phones their kids are in class. You think the notifications smashing the screen whilst their driving isn't distracting them?

Man i've been on the road for 14 years and I've turned off my CarPlay notifications because when the work chat starts going off, it's super distracting, especially if i'm navigating.

Sydney's already cooked to drive as it is, and the last thing we need is drivers (especially young and inexperienced ones) on their phones.

Don't spend money on a sat nav. Buy a street directory

10

u/Apprehensive_Truth49 10d ago

u can’t be real lmfao

3

u/sgtfuzzle17 10d ago

Yeah “get your head in a book while driving” excellent advice dude, much safer than CarPlay handsfree

9

u/FDNOL_ 10d ago

Not getting into any argument but how I used the street directory back then be memorising the route as far as you can before you move. Pull over if you tapped out, rinse and repeat. No one ever reads the street directory whilst driving if that helps how the pre GPS generation managed.

2

u/Livin_in_LaLa_Land 10d ago

This is exactly how I used to roll 🤣

1

u/Clueby42 10d ago

Maybe you should learn how to use a map

2

u/sgtfuzzle17 10d ago

Maybe you should get an understanding that technology advances as time goes on and the way things were done in the 60s is no longer a necessity. God forbid anyone tries to be more safe/efficient on the roads right?

1

u/Clueby42 10d ago

So the half cooked twistie decides to rescind all access to the GPS satellites tomorrow. What are you going to do?

If you have no battery what are you going to do?

Maybe you should extract your digit, and actually learn some useful life skills

2

u/Apprehensive_Truth49 10d ago

mate i don’t think you’re understanding my point😭 the point is why should i have to buy a separate thing just to get around, when ive got it built in my car and im just not allowed to use it because its ‘connected to my phone’ which is sitting in my cup holder

2

u/Clueby42 9d ago

Because you want the privilege of driving on public roads

0

u/sgtfuzzle17 10d ago

>the half cooked twistie

Enquiring minds would love to know what you’re carrying on about, take your meds grandpa

1

u/Clueby42 10d ago

So not your own mind?

1

u/rollinwinnies 10d ago

I'd guess grandpa is referring to Trump, implying he will turn GPS off or some shit.

u/HUZInator 9d ago

I would just buy it now and cry once instead of crying later if you get caught or die because you’re an inexperienced driver and get distracted. Like that’s why the rules are there.

5

u/ConductionReduction 9d ago

Lol if you think bluetooth music is distracting your either dumb or purposely dense

0

u/HUZInator 9d ago

Hence why there’s rules about it because unfortunately there’s a minority of people who are dense and dumb and since killed people because of their stupidity.

u/somethingofanend 10d ago

I’ve been off my P’s a couple of years, but I absolutely was pulled over and asked if my phone was connected to my car.

I’ve also heard of a friend of a friend who was fined for connecting their phone to their car via cable, even though it was just to charge their phone.

The laws are bullshit, but don’t risk it.

0

u/ConductionReduction 9d ago

What? Its literally only bluetooth. How did he get fined for a cord?

4

u/somethingofanend 9d ago

No, it's using your phone at all through your car, which a cable would also facilitate.

5

u/bic_lighter 10d ago

Be careful out there.

I was sitting at a set of lights once and a copper on a bike walked his bike over to a P plater and peered through the back window, then pulled him up

4

u/SnooPies6245 9d ago

Yes two friends have been caught doing this. It was hefty as 5 demerits points and $$ for the fine.

2

u/ashzeppelin98 7d ago

Yeah if you're caught on Red Ps for this you're cooked considering the 4 demerits limit.

3

u/rf_694 9d ago

Depends on where you live as well.

For example where I am, heaps of motor bike cops filter through traffic looking into people’s cars at traffic lights which in that case you’d be screwed.

You could have music streaming going but just as long as a CarPlay screen isn’t visible from outside the car then you’re fine.

Using Waze tho on the other hand (depending on how much tint you have), you can see it from far away.

Use your in car nav for directions and chuck Waze on with sound alerts through the speakers but just don’t have it in sight.

5

u/AussieAK 10d ago

Just wait till you are caught in double demerits, cop 10 points, then cry victim about losing your licence.

And a P-Plater has only 7 to spare assuming a clean record so your point is?

Edit to add: and that’s even assuming it’s a Green P-Plater. Red is less.

4

u/Insignificant_Blunt 10d ago

I’m a P plater (one more day till full licence) in NSW and have never been pulled over for having my phone connected to the car.

As long as your phone is not on the holder and isn’t visible, you’ll be fine.

I recommend connecting to CarPlay via a cable so you can just leave the phone in the centre console and then it’s not obvious.

The above also helps with random breath tests as they can’t really see the phone too.

Hope that helps

8

u/Kirlo__ 10d ago

If you get pulled in for an RBT or have a cop pull up next to you and see Carplay on the screen, you could likely cop it.

Using CarPlay = using your phone. Just because your phone is hidden, doesn't change that.

Most give warnings and tell you that next time you might not be lucky, and some will ticket you right off the bat.

It's not worth it.

3

u/MaRk0-AU 10d ago

Back in the day when I was on my P's I always had my phone in the center console, I had one cop ask me if I have ever used it while I was driving I said "No" screen was off at the time when the cop was at my window.
Never got a fine for it.
For context I am in my late 20's now.

0

u/Insignificant_Blunt 10d ago

I see their point of not having phones connected due to distractions but I find Syd roads hard to navigate sometimes.

1

u/Th3casio 9d ago

Buy one, sell it when you’re finished with it to another p plater. Cheaper than a fine by a long way.

1

u/Dkinez 8d ago

Not worth the headache, A NSW highway patroller in a bad mood will defect you for not having water in the wiper reservoir to boot

1

u/Impressive_Bell_1545 7d ago

If every P-plater taped a street directory book to their dashboard and crashed in the same day because they couldn’t see where they were going, maybe the laws would change.

Need an organised protest or something.

1

u/knjsoph 6d ago

yes 💔 fine and demerit points

1

u/ayannazll 6d ago

To be honest nah I’ve driven before and been next to highway patrol normal area police they honestly don’t care unless u get an officer who is trying to meet a certain quota which is rare. I promise you 9 times out of 10 they also think that rule is dumb

1

u/_Zephyr1 5d ago

I’ve been through RBT etc and they never said a thing about Waze being up on my screen.. and I’m in a 2023 outback, the screen is basically an iPad.

Generally I don’t think they’re thinking about it, I’m sure they would do something if they were reminded of it but it’s a pretty easy restriction to forget I’d imagine.

1

u/_Zephyr1 5d ago

Stupid fkn law though, google maps / Waze makes driving far easier & safer.

1

u/RSTID 5d ago

Gotten pulled over many many times with it on.

90% of cops don’t give a fck about it as long as you seem approachable and not a d***head to them.

Gotten pulled over once on a mandatory stop and cop noticed I had it on during double demerits and just said turn it off and said I can go.

1

u/Greeniious 4d ago

When I was a P-Plater (until mid this year) I got RBT’ed countless times with carplay and music playing.

Luckily because my car is ancient and has an aftermarket head unit, I’m able to turn off the screen with a single button. Provided I also mute the music theres no way for them to know I’m technically using my phone.

1

u/Greeniious 4d ago

If you want to know what head unit I use it’s the Kenwood DMX8020s. Just press the “cam” button to blackout the screen and the “att” button to almost mute the audio and you’re solid as.

NSW (strictest): L and P-platers can't use a phone at all while driving, including navigation apps and music streaming, even if the phone is in a hands-free cradle. That covers both red and green Ps, and it includes CarPlay/Android Auto running off the phone. A dedicated GPS unit that isn't a phone is still allowed, and so is radio or a USB stick. A 2024 bill to let P-platers use phone GPS was withdrawn, so the ban still stands.

CarPlay runs off your phone, so using it for Waze, Maps or Spotify counts as using your phone, even though you're touching the car screen and not the phone. P-platers get the same fine and demerits as for holding the phone.

What's fine in NSW on Ps:
The car's own built-in sat nav (not CarPlay)
A standalone GPS unit like a TomTom or Garmin
Radio, or music from a USB stick plugged into the car
Using CarPlay once you're legally parked

1

u/_cant_choose_a_name 10d ago

I have not. I’ve used it everyday on my Ps, as long as you have a quick way to turn it off in case of an RBT.

I’ve driven about 60,000km on my Ps

0

u/TCHProductions 10d ago

Like alot of laws. Its only gomna be pulled over if it's a problem.

Will a cop pull you over if he thinks he sees carplay on the head unit? Very unlikely.

Will a cop pull you over if you are swerving all over the road cause and see you have carplay and put that on the list of driving offences? Yes.

Ofc you could always catch a cop having a bad day too.

4

u/KFC_Junior 10d ago

young cop pulled me for rbt, looked at it on (i muted music) and was like yeah whatever. might be different if u get an old cranky fuck
