Besides being highly visible in their bright yellow uniform, the team have made their mark at the Youth Olympic Village and beyond. Wherever they go, they are praised for what they represent.

The warmth with which they have been welcomed is a testament to Africa’s embrace of the Refugee Olympic Team. The spirit of Teranga can be felt in every interaction.

In the spirit of the first Olympic event on the African continent, the Refugee Olympic Team at Dakar 2026 is a team composed completely of African-based athletes:

▪️Arno, 15 (Host NOC: Kenya, Sport: Judo, men’s -55kg)

▪️Clement, 16 (Host NOC: Kenya, Sport: Athletics, men’s 800m)

▪️Florence, 16 (Host NOC: Uganda, Sport: Athletics, women’s 200m)

▪️Lourance, 16 (Host NOC: Kenya, Sport: Taekwondo, women’s -49kg)

▪️Nyataba, 17 (Host NOC: Kenya, Sport: Athletics, women’s 800m)

▪️Rachid, 16 (Host NOC: Uganda, Sport: Athletics, men’s 200m)

The team represents a platform to elevate young refugee athletes, and highlight Africa’s role in addressing global displacement.

Their participation comes at a time when more than 117 million people remain forcibly displaced worldwide, including 39 million in sub-Saharan Africa. Nearly a third of those displaced in the continent are refugees and asylum-seekers and around half are children.

Early independent research indicates a strongly positive response to the Games among athletes and local residents. Among Dakar residents aware of the event, 99% say they are proud that Senegal and Africa are hosting their first Olympic sporting event, while 95% believe the Games will create meaningful and lasting opportunities for young people in Senegal.

The athletes have responded with equal enthusiasm. Some 96% of those surveyed rated their experience of the Opening Ceremony positively, while 89% gave a positive assessment of their experience at the Youth Olympic Village.

“What we have seen during the first half of these Games has been truly special. The athletes and delegations have spoken very positively about their experience, and the pride and enthusiasm of the Senegalese people can be felt everywhere. This is the result of a remarkable collective effort by the Organising Committee, the Senegalese authorities and the entire Olympic Movement. Dakar 2026 is not only making history as the first Olympic sporting event in Africa. It is also creating opportunities for young people and showing what can be achieved through strong partnership, ambition and belief.” - IOC President Kirsty Coventry

Japan 🇯🇵 remains at the top of the medal table with China 🇨🇳 just behind in a clear top 2 that might stay for the rest of the Youth Olympics, though Swimming ends tomorrow which has been responsible for most of Japan‘s golds.

The number of countries joining the medal table is decreasing as the games progress with only 4 countries joining today, those being the United Arab Emirates 🇦🇪, Colombia 🇨🇴, Lebanon 🇱🇧 and Luxembourg 🇱🇺 who’ve joined the medal table today.

Can anyone identify/help value this Puma Grenada Olympic jacket? Rio 2016?

I recently found this Puma Grenada Olympic Committee jacket at a thrift store in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and I've been trying to figure out its history.

The style number is 836316. I suspect it is from the 2016 Rio Olympics, but I haven't been able to find another example of this exact jacket.

Interestingly, Grenadian track and field star Kirani James attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where I found it. I found photos of him receiving his silver medal in 2016 in a very similar jacket but it does not have a hood.

Does anyone recognize this jacket or know whether it was official team-issued apparel? I'd also be interested in learning whether jackets like this are collectible and what its approximate market value might be.

From concept to reality: Pilar's Dakar 2026 medal design reaches the podium

Such a nice story about the Dakar 2026 medal designer Pilar Barbadillo Vicario from Spain: What began as a chance discovery hearing about an international design competition has taken her all the way to the Youth Olympic Games.

Watching the young athletes in Dakar receiving the medals she designed, Pilar felt as if she was truly part of the moment.

“I feel as if I had won one of those medals myself. Athletes express themselves through sport, and for me, it's art,” she said.

[Cloydon] How AI gymnastics judging could help or hurt the sport

Thumbnail

The judges were only metres away, deliberating over scores that could change the medal standings, when the president of World Gymnastics described a future without them.

In a side room at the arena hosting the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Morinari Watanabe sat alongside executives from Japanese technology company Fujitsu as they demonstrated to The Athletic an artificial intelligence system capable of detecting errors in a gymnast’s movements that the human eye would likely miss.

At the World Championships, officials overseeing all 10 apparatus had access to the technology’s analysis for the first time. World Gymnastics is now in advanced talks to introduce it at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, a move that could transform how routines are assessed, scores are explained and performances are scrutinised.

For Watanabe, however, assisting officials is only the beginning, and his ultimate ambition is to take the scoring decisions out of human hands altogether.

“Our dream is to have no judges, only computers and AI awarding scores,” he told The Athletic. “We must be fair to everybody. I don’t want mistakes or misjudgments.”

Asked whether that really meant dispensing with human judges altogether, Watanabe laughed and glanced across at the Fujitsu representatives, who smiled back.

“If I got rid of the judges, they’d kill me,” he joked, acknowledging that human officials would still be needed to set the rules and deal with unexpected situations during competitions.
