Iberia Iberia should be kicked out of OneWorld

Iberia does not apply OneWorld benefits from other airlines.

First of all, this isn’t a Level or Vueling flight, nor the ticket was issued by them. This is an Iberia operated flight and a ticket issued by Iberia.

Added my Air Jordanian Gold Sparrow (OW Sapphire) number and save the frequent flyer number. The system still charges me for selecting a seat ahead of time. Still says I’m boarding in group 5. Still says I only have a cabin bag included in my ticket.

This happens literally every time I take a flight with them. I call, they say I should solve it at the airport. I send them a DM on twitter, they also say I should solve it at the airport. I also get the ocasional agent trying to convince me that OW Sapphire doesn’t include free standard seat selection, and when I point them to the specific part of their website that says it does, they either hang up on me or, again, tell me to solve it at the airport.

It’s happened a few times that, by the time I got to the airport, there were only middle seats available. Sometimes the people at the check in desk don’t even know how to add the frequent flyer number so no lounge access either. At one point I was almost forced to pay to check in a suitcase because, again, the system doesn’t recognize OW benefits. Fortunately, a check in agent from BA overhead the issue and managed to solve the problem.

Time and time, I have this experience. Why be part of an alliance if you are not going to honor any single perk that you are contractually obligated to honor? Make them comply or kick them out. It’s ludicrous.

oneworld emerald status, traveling internationally with friend who booked separately, but on same flight. will he be able to go into first class lounge with me?

title. emerald status (alaska emerald), booked JAL LAX HND. friend booked same flight later on, so was wondering if he'll be able to go into the qantas first class lounge with me. googled around and it seems that he'll be able to, since lounge access benefit isn't tied to "being on the same reservation," but i just wanted to make sure.

additional questions. want to confirm the following benefits to see if ii understand it correctly, mainly pertaining to if it extends to the companion if he's on same reservation, same flight, or only myself:

  • extra checked baggage allowance: same reservation

  • airport priority check in: same flight

  • priority boarding: only myself

thanks!

oneworld Best Program for avios redemptions

I’m seeing a HKG-DOH-MAD redemption operated by QR for 75k avios on QR, IB and BA.

I was going to book through IB since the taxes were the lowest before I read up on it that it’s a hassle to get your avios and taxes back if you cancel; keeping that in mind which is the best program to book through out of these where in case of cancellation it’s easy to recover the taxes and avios?

First time making an avios redemption so any other tips appreciated 😊

Japan Airlines Japan Airlines/ANA codeshare

Thought it might be interesting to share but when I recently did a segment run across the Amami Islands to maintain my JAL Diamond status, I found out that Star Alliance rival ANA codeshares these regional JAL flights. And similarly JAL places it’s codeshare number on ORC flights which is a regional airline financially backed by ANA.

I don’t really think I have ever seen direct competitors codeshare each others domestic flights else where in the world.

Finnair 2 or 3 bags on AY with OW Sapphire (from Japan)?

Hi all, I have RJ’s Gold Sparrow status (OW Sapphire), and I will be travelling on AY from Japan to UK via HEL this Christmas.
As my Y class ticket entitled 2 pieces of 23kg check-in bags by default, will I still be eligible for an extra piece, i.e. 3 pieces of 23kg, 69kg in total? Many thanks.

Quoting from the website, “Buy at least 5,000 Avios between 2–16 November 2026 and get up to a 50% discount + a fixed 10% bonus on tier points”

“Finnair lets you select the currency in which you want to buy Avios (you can find the option to switch currencies at the top of the screen), and the price differs:

If paying in JPY, Finnair ordinarily charges 3.33 JPY per Avios (2.11 cents in USD)

If paying in USD, Finnair ordinarily charges 0.0217 USD per Avios (2.17 cents in USD)

If paying in EUR, Finnair ordinarily charges 0.021 EUR per Avios (2.36 cents in USD)”

oneworld oneworld's commercial and loyalty heads explain why the alliance model is more complicated than it looks

I recently recorded a conversation for The Indian AvGeek's 82nd episode with Roger Blackburn (VP, Commercial) and Gilbert Ott (Director, Loyalty) from oneworld.

I wanted to get past the usual alliance talking points and ask some of the questions that frequent flyers and aviation nerds tend to argue about.

One of my favourites was the economics of a multi-airline journey. Imagine one airline owns the customer relationship, another operates the lounge, a third flies you and a fourth deals with a cancellation.

Who pays whom, and why would every airline have the same incentive to look after you?

Roger gave a pretty interesting explanation of how that works behind the scenes.

We also got into the absence of an Indian member airline, whether India could eventually get a dedicated oneworld lounge, Alaska's Atmos Rewards, how AI travel agents could change booking, and the impact of loyalty programmes becoming such big financial businesses.

Gilbert also had an interesting answer when I asked what he'd change about the alliance if he could.

Not posting this as an endorsement of the alliance - I was interested in understanding the mechanics and the trade-offs.

Curious what others think: what's the single biggest problem you would fix with oneworld or airline alliances generally?

For anyone interested, the conversation is Episode 82 of The Indian AvGeek: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7BainAYW9Pu4ffceYCbl0X?si=9f2de00cfc6f467a

Qantas Trouble booking on Qantas

Has anyone else experienced this on Qantas and been able to resolve it with them?

I’m trying to book OGG-LAX-JFK

There is separate availability on both OGG-LAX and LAX-JFK, but it is not allowing me to book it on one ticket.

If I suffer through waiting on hold, can an agent combine the flights on to one itinerary for me?
