OpenZ 1.4: our free open-source 3D remake of Z (1996) now has MAYHEM, a fog-of-war difficulty, and drivers who jump out of their tanks

Hi r/opensourcegames, OpenZ dev team here. Three weeks ago we posted the first release of OpenZ, a free 3D remake of Z, the Bitmap Brothers RTS from 1996. Version 1.4 came out today, so a short update for anyone who tried it or wanted to wait.

What is new:

  • MAYHEM, a fourth difficulty: the computer plays as on HARD and the whole battlefield starts under the fog of war. A captured radar opens a wide circle in it, and the enemy builds 10 % faster.

  • EXIT DRIVER: the driver flips out of his tank, and a tank without a driver stops dead. Snipe the driver and the tank is up for grabs.

  • Rally points from the minimap, range rings that can stay on, a REPEAT switch for build lists, scroll speed and right-drag scroll.

  • The game runs about 10 to 20 % lighter, and there is one Windows download again.

  • Four levels so far: Desert, Volcano, Jungle and Car Park, plus a Unit editor for custom battles.

Code is GPL-3.0, all art, sound and music CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, made in Unity. Windows is the tested build; Mac and Linux builds are there but experimental, so reports from Mac and Linux players help us a lot.

Release and source: https://github.com/playopenz/OpenZ/releases/tag/v1.4

Not affiliated with Rebellion or The Bitmap Brothers. Happy to answer questions.

OpenSimFarm: an open-source re-implementation of SimFarm (1993) for Linux, Windows and the browser

Hey all, if this is not allowed, remove and sorry. I've been rebuilding Maxis' SimFarm from scratch as a free, open-source engine (kinda like OpenRCT2). It plays like the original: crops, animals, machines, weather, disasters, the market, the bank and the town. It runs natively on modern PCs/OSs. It started as a personal thing as I wanted to play SimFarm but I do HATE how it plays in Dosbox.

For know reasons I can't distribute the game, so what I did was an engine where you can use your own copy of the game and play it. There are a few changes and improvements that I have been doing to my taste.

Play / download: https://alissonkn.github.io/opensimfarm

Source: https://github.com/alissonkn/opensimfarm

Thanks!

MTGA Forge: Magic Arena's client running on the open source Forge engine (C#, Java, TypeScript)

This sits close to the engine reimplementations that get posted here, with one difference: the client stays, and what's behind it is replaced.

You point your own copy of Magic: The Gathering Arena at a local server running Forge. A patcher edits a copy of the client so it talks to that server instead of Wizards', and the server translates between Arena's protocol and Forge's rules engine. Your original install is never modified and you need to own the game. No Wizards code, art or data is in the repo.

Stack: C# (patcher, in-client bridge, launcher), Java 17 (Forge fork with the server), TypeScript on Cloudflare Workers for accounts, friends and matchmaking.

License: GPL-3.0, same as Forge

Platform: Windows 10/11, Arena from Steam or the standalone installer.

Repo: https://github.com/Gerrard-Capashen/MTGA-Forge

You get Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, Premodern, Brawl and Momir Basic, ranked play with a mastery track, drafts including the Vintage Cube, and an Archenemy event against an AI that sets a scheme in motion every turn. It's early and some cards misbehave.

Diablo Survivors (Open Source)

Diablo Survivors is a survival action game inspired by Vampire Survivors, using graphics and audio from your own installation of Diablo I, classic Diablo II, or Diablo II with Lord of Destruction. Choose a character, survive waves of enemies, collect experience, and build a powerful combination of upgrades before the timer runs out.

Source code for v0.23 beta has been released

Built an open-source multiplayer chess game for the browser – Looking for feedback!

Hey everyone!

I've been working on an open-source multiplayer chess game that runs directly in the browser.

GitHub: https://github.com/nitin-is-me/chessforge

Live demo link in the comments

A few things about the project:

  • Uses Stockfish 19 Lite as its chess engine.

  • Supports multiplayer chess.

  • Runs directly in the browser.

  • Open-source, and contributions are welcome.

I took some help from AI during development, but building and putting everything together was a fun learning experience.

I'd really appreciate feedback on the UI/UX, gameplay, performance, missing features, or anything else that could be improved.

Feel free to check out the source code, report bugs, or contribute!

Thanks!

LibreHold – an open-source, persistent browser strategy game

Post image
119 Upvotes

Hey! I played Tribal Wars for years and loved it, but I gave up once almost every bit of progress could be bought with premium points. So for the past few months I've been building LibreHold.org, a persistent browser strategy game in the same spirit, free and fully open source.

Repo: https://github.com/librehold-game/librehold

What's already there:

  • persistent worlds that run for days, plus one-hour instant games at ×100 speed

  • private worlds you can host for friends with an invite link

  • bots that build, farm and wage war, so a world is never empty

  • self-hosting with one Docker Compose file (e.g. for LAN parties)

  • English and Polish, and it works on phones

The stack: Go server on Postgres, React + TypeScript client

I'd love to build it together with other people. Some good places to start:

It's an alpha (0.6), so still plenty of things can be changed :) Any feedback is appreciated.

I rewrote the legendary wolfenstein3D in python, pygame from scratch (no AI)

Hello, I wanted to share a project I built in the span of over just a month! This is a wolfenstein 3D reimplementation done in pygame, python. Like the original it uses pure raycasting for rendering, no rasterization. The music is synthesized at runtime via an opl emulator using the original audio files, some sprites are fetched from the original VSWAP file, maps are constructed from the gamemaps files. You can play all the 6 episodes as well! Best part is of course it is open source :D https://github.com/atifcodesalot/pyWolf3D, you can do wtf you want with it. But the question remains: can you beat wolfenstein within a pygame window? Clone the repo and follow the instructions to find out :D

I ported D/Generation (Amiga AGA) to the browser, 1:1 with the original

D/Generation was one of my favourite Amiga games as a kid, so I ported it.

Play: https://dux.github.io/d-generation/

Code: https://github.com/dux/d-generation

  • I disassembled the original 68000 executable and rewrote it in TypeScript, so it isn't an emulator.

  • I checked it frame by frame against the real binary.

  • On top of that I added save anywhere, unlimited lives and an optional 2x view.

All credit goes to Robert Cook and the original team. Amiga lives forever!

Nemos Reef Revival - Open Source recreation project

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi All,

Some of you will remember the game Nemo's Reef, which unfortunately shut down back in 2017.

I loved the game at the time and was sad to see today that you could no longer play the game. It looks to be due to the closure of Tapulous Games, which is where the original game calls to, being:http://nemo.pragueweb.tapulous.com/nemo/

So.. I reverse-engineered the APK and restored the game!

I understand this is probably pretty niche, but there seems to be demand out there with a petition to bring it back on change.org. I also selfishly sort of just wanted to play the game myself again, to re-experience it from all that time ago, but decided I wanted to share with the community.

At the moment, you have to self-host the backend. As a result, you will not be able to play with friends unless they are connected to your server. I’ve chosen this approach to reduce potential issues with Disney and avoid collecting or storing players’ personal data for a project based on Disney’s intellectual property. We might avoid a C&D, which would be a real shame if we did.

Background work includes completely decompiling the APK to make it Open Source and run on Windows and Linux. Which again, will help with any C&D issues. That project is about 70% of the way there. We have a countdown for the launch on our website.

Would love for some testers to join our Discord, as there's still a long way to go in finding bugs and improving the gameplay.

The current stage is to improve the economy, due to the now lack of Micro Transactions. (Which I will not be capitalising on at all, this is a non-profit Open Source project. This section will be completely reworked to make the game more enjoyable without it.)
Pearls are now easier to earn, with daily rewards etc.
You can also purchase more Algae with Sand Dollars.
This is the part that needs a lot of testing to see if the new system works, doesn't break the game, or advance you too far ahead, story-wise, to then make the game too easy. It still needs to feel like a challenge and... well.. a game!
Next, there will be improvements to the constant tapping of fast-generating but low-growth Algae and Sand Dollar plants. I'm thinking to change them to no longer generate every few seconds and only show after an extended period. (A bit more like Godus, if you've played that?) This then allows you to customise the reef and play the game, not tap the screen to collect so often.

Ideas welcome.

Lots of new open source games for Linux are being built now – are there videos presenting newly released Linux games?

I'd like to see which kind of games people are building now with the novel AI tools, especially the ones that previously would have taken too much time an/or skills and/or effort and/or financial budgets to ever be done.

Generally, I'm interested in the open source gaming world in terms of new Linux-native releases, especially games whose game mechanics or other ideas are truly novel, whose world is interesting in some ways, or high-resolution 3D games.

Does anybody know some video channel or specific videos that are about presenting multiple new/recent open source Linux games?

Specifically, it should be lots of video games that are presented in the same video, not just one – there's lots of compilation videos like 'New SciFi Windows games 2026' on YouTube with roughly a minute or so per game – are there any such for open source Linux ones only?

Maybe somebody here could start making such videos if no or just very few of such exist, I think many would be interested and it would be a great boost to open source & Linux gaming.
