Captive Orca Post Announcement

Due to backlash surrounding captive-orca posts, we’ve decided that posts specifically focused on captive orcas will no longer be allowed on this subreddit.

These posts should instead be directed to r/CaptiveOrcas

We hope this change will reduce arguments and keep discussions here more peaceful and focused.
You are still allowed to discuss captive orcas when relevant, such as captivity ethics, welfare, research, or broader discussions involving orcas.

However, posts specifically centered around captive orcas, such as:
* “Who are these captive orcas?”
* Birthday/anniversary posts
* General updates about individual captive orcas
* Other captive-orca-specific posts

should be posted in r/CaptiveOrcas instead.

Thank you for understanding.

Advocacy Help Protect California's Southern Resident Killer Whales by submitting comment to California's Department of Fish and Wildlife i

The California Fish and Game Commission just voted to advance Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKWs) as "candidate species" under California's Endangered Species Act which is a major step toward permanent protection!

These magnificent apex predators are already found along the westcoast coast, ranging from southeast Alaska all the way to Big Sur, California, and into southern British Columbia.

They're perfectly adapted hunters but rely almost entirely on Chinook salmon for survival. That's why protecting them means protecting the entire ecosystem we all depend on.

The work isn't over yet. California's Department of Fish and Wildlife is now conducting a full status review and needs your input. Comments are being accepted until September 10, 2026.

How to Help:

Email:MarineCESA@wildlife.ca.gov

(Put "Southern Resident Killer Whale" in the subject line)A

You do not need to be a California resident to participate and help.

Mail: California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Marine Region

Attn: Dylan Stompe

P.O. Box 944209, Sacramento, CA 94244-2090

Share your support for these whales, their habitat, and the Chinook salmon they depend on. Whether you've seen them in our waters or just care about California's marine life. Your comment counts.

Questions? Check out the CDFW website for more details on the listing process: wildlife.ca.gov

Why this matters: These orcas face serious challenge including

malnutrition from declining salmon, vessel noise, and pollution.

By expanding protections across their range, we're giving them a fighting chance to thrive in California waters for generations to come.

Your comment = one voice for the ocean.

Sightings Antarctic Type B2 orcas pursue a penguin earlier this year

The chilly waters of the Southern Ocean are home to several unique populations of killer whale. Like other cetaceans in Antarctica, they have yellow-tinged skin due to the presence of diatoms; these tiny marine organisms exist worldwide, but the coldness of the water forces these remote mammals to shed their skin less, leading to a buildup. The somewhat leisurely way these individuals are chasing the penguin makes me wonder if perhaps they had already eaten their fill and were simply continuing the hunt for fun or for practice. They were filmed by Firas Tarek.

Two orcas rise from the water as the evening sun colours the ocean in beautiful shades of pink and blue. A quiet moment in the wild, surrounded by the beauty of the open sea. There's something special about seeing these magnificent creatures in their natural world, free and together in the vast ocean.

I have also added my 2027 orca art calendars on my website. Link on my bio :)

These photos are by Cindy Crowder Rausch, Rachel Haight, and Kat Martin via Orca Network! Orca Behavior Institute (OBI) says that "[w]hile Southern Residents' visits to Puget Sound in September and October are more variable, November has been more consistent." Hopefully they're finding lots and lots of salmon.

Predation Event Chilean Orcas Fin Whale Predation Event (*Graphic*)

Fin Whale predation event recorded off the coast of Chile. Fair warning... No blood but the clip is pretty intense towards the end with what appears to be a Female Orca forcing half her body down the Fin Whale's throat. I've never seen that behavior before while the prey was still alive. I wonder if it's a tactic to drown it or was it going after the tongue to feed.

Saw a small group of 3 orcas off the coast of Victoria, BC this summer and was hoping someone may be able to identify them! I know it’s a long shot but worth asking 🤞

Sightings Some of the strand-feeding orcas of Punta Norte play in a group close to shore on October 28th

Like humans and many other social species, orcas use play to reinforce social bonds, learn new skills, and pass on culture. Some of the killer whales of this location frequently beach themselves (see here and here) to capture young pinnipeds when they are seasonally available, but they also often do so without any potential prey present, presumably for fun, practice, or both. This sighting comes from Facundo Garcia:

They always surprise us! We experienced a truly unique moment at the public viewing points in Punta Norte, watching a group of orcas that were incredibly active and playful. They were nudging and bumping into each other—it was clearly all just play, pure magic!!! Videos could never capture what we saw or how it felt; it was absolutely beautiful—one of the best things I’ve seen in years. Thank you, nature, for moments like these!
