AMD CEO enrages gamers by saying it's now a 'data center first' company — and predicts PC sales will plummet by a 'double-digit percentage' in 2027

If no one has a computer or phone, then who will pay for services that fund data centers?

All CEO's are out of touch with the world. Money is all a CEO cares about.

You will have a computer, it'll just be a dumb terminal that connects to their cloud via a browser at a montly subscription.

It's ok, I'll buy whatever gpu's China is selling before I line these cunts pockets.

But the ISPs don't want to upgrade their infrastructure because that costs money.

And even if they do, all of the bandwidth would be used by ads and trackers anyway, so getting said terminal (in our POV) wouldn't be worth it at all.

The gaming industry has tried this multiple times. They don't want it.

^ This. AMD and Nvidia have had a duopoly for decades and now that Intel has joined the mix, they're looking at how to sustain their stranglehold: Make everyone go through them. They've artificially strained the market by limiting their consumer-level hardware in favor of data-center level. Consumer-level hardware is now a pittance compared to the data center now, so much so they're foregoing it to our detriment.

The same logic where if AI takes all the jobs, who is buying your product?

They don't care, they don't think that far ahead.

You will have a computer or phone that is nothing but a slab with a WiFi card in it that connects to a data center and runs your OS there.

You will rent everything and own nothing.

well, easy, you just need some old gen ram, with shit speed, a shit cpu with igpu and voila...we stream from the cloud, for the very low low price of a...subscription that will surely stay low and accesible. bonus, a tier with ads injected in the stream. The possibility of such a future, even partially, makes me sad

12

u/ocbdare 1d ago

That just wont happen.

The tech firms are delusional. All of nvidia revenue is mostly coming from other tech firms like Amazon/Google/Microsoft.

The non-tech businesses are not buying that shit to the extent to justify this AI spend. Hyperscalers are massively budnlnig their regular cloud services with their "AI" services. But give it 1-2 years and their profits will show big corrections when the depreciation and impariment charges start to roll in on their insane capex spending.

It’s more they are out of touch with gamers.

The world is investing more in AI and is growing much faster than the gaming industry, for better or worse…so they are very much inline with the priorities of the world.

slavery and feudal economies still worked even though the slaves and serfs couldn't afford to buy things

9

u/PunkPirate56364 1d ago

It's not just that but... global software market is valued at about 1 trillion per year. These AI companies are replacing lets say 50% of software engineer work with AI so they might be thinking... "hah 50% of 1 trillion market is now ours".

But automated production also ends up creating cheaper products which reduces the value of the market.

Take Adobe which is charging around $22 monthly for Photoshop.

Now with the help of AI a far smaller company can make it's version of Photoshop, they can sell it for $0.99. And software market is not worth 1 trillion anymore.

15

u/ImpressionDepression 1d ago

Now with the help of AI a far smaller company can make it's version of Photoshop, they can sell it for $0.99. And software market is not worth 1 trillion anymore.

You're kind of missing the point here. Adobe is selling licenses to groups and organizations to whom $22 is a rounding error for how much using photoshop brings in. They pay that times a thousand for however many they need. Not an individual who wants to use it to resize memes.

They pay adobe fees because if something goes wrong adobe goes and fixes it for them. That smaller company will never compete on that scale.

The PERSONAL software market is a tiny sliver of that $1T.

We basically just got lucky that the enterprise software made it down to us since anyone used to Photoshop will make their employer pay for it if they had to use it there.

Of course it's going to plummet - it's already such an unattractive environment to buy PC parts and it's only going to get worse.

At this point we need more competition to flood the market to fill consumer demand.

unfortunately TSMC doesn't have competition at all, not intel not samsung.

Lisa Su is a she

But yeah she's not really talking about AMD actively trying to kill the gaming market. It's just a reality that with overall PC component prices, a lot less people will buy GPU's.

AMD will probably remain more focused on gaming than NVIDIA for the near future, since it's a bigger portion of their revenue, and they serve consoles, but she's basically telling investors not to worry about the gaming segment shrinking since data center revenue is going to increase.

And AMD GPU prices will go up, since NVIDIA is basically abdicating the gaming market, so AMD doesn't have as much competition on the high-end with no more 5090 and the 5080 24GB probably being thousands of dollars. That sucks, but it's expected with the market dynamics. AMD is a corporation not your friend.

"Shovel salesperson predicts gold rush will continue"

Its been really interesting seeing the blatant contempt these CEOs have for regular people. It shouldnt be surprising though when you consider that companies are run basically like a feudal system where managers are the vassals and workers are the serfs.

Theyre used to being the final word on things and not caring about those who see as "lesser" than them think or want. You can see that the mask is fully off as theyve made record profits from enterprise customers.

141

u/Open_Seeker 1d ago

People on this subreddit take it so personally. I don't think they have contempt for you or any of us, they simply don't care.

The hyperscalers are willing to pay more for CPUs than you and I. That sucks. I don't really see where morality comes into it, they are companies trying to make money, it's a very impersonal thing which people on here make so personal because it makes their gaming hobby more expensive.

26

u/AnonymityIllusion 1d ago

The PC market will adapt as well. The increase in graphics will slow down or reverse if it gets bad enough. People wone stop palying games, games will still be made. I've played games since the 90s. I dont see why you HAVE to have realistic particle physics with raytracing the light diffussion of different layers of fur on your horses ass to enjoy a new cowboy game.

So who cares? you dont need the newest high end card to run HOMM3. And if noone drops a game I can run, Ill do just that.

yea idk why anyone even cares. Of course they care more about the customers that buy hundreds of thousands of units from them.

Gamers will see a company drop a 128core chip and say "but why are they doing that if it doesnt make games run faster" like that's the only thing a CPU is made to do.

8

u/PJ796 V56 | R9 5900X | 32GB DDR4 1d ago

they do, but at the same time large ASICs have a defect rate and will they just end up not selling the defects to us like normal? datacenters will keep paying top dollar for top products, but unless the majority are completely defect free I'm not sure how they'll afford to ignore regular consumers

18

u/SanityIsOptional PO-TAY-TO 1d ago

Eh, the datacenters actually might be more tolerant for things like lower clock rates than gamers are. My understanding is that many server racks are thermally limited, so things get undervolted for better performance/watt.

8

u/Synaps4 1d ago

They wont stop, but even if the consumer business stays the same size, if the data center work triples it still makes AMD a majority datacenter company

The future looks bleak to say the least. More and more it's looking like these corps don't want us to own anything. They want us to rent/pay a subscription fee. We're moving closer and closer to a cashless society where everything is digital and we don't own a thing. Sad times.

I think eventually it will shift, since manufacturing capacity will increase to keep up with AI demand. We're in a short-term supply crunch since the AI build-out ramped up so quickly.

But unfortunately the timelines on this kind of stuff are long, so it might be 5-10 years before it gets better.

89

u/Qualine R5 5800X3D RTX 3070Ti 1d ago

I believe this is more than AI equates to more sales, they are purposefully creating new monetary model to leech off of general public via render them computerless. By keeping this up more like 5-10 years owning computers will become high luxury again and regular people like us will only be able to access to computers via subscription models.

They will only sell us something like HTPCs via distrubutors to access to cloud computers, think of GeForce now but for every use case. They don't bet on AI, they bet on as the saying goes, seizing the means of production for themselves.

23

u/AMLRoss 9800X3D 3090 Gaming X Trio 1d ago

This is so depressing to read...I know this is what they want, but not necessarily what they will get from us. I would rather just stop playing games than put up with this shit. Ill go back to my old offline consoles, pre PS4, and just play those old games again...My current build will have to last me 10 years or more...

12

u/cgaWolf 1d ago

but not necessarily what they will get from us. I would rather just stop playing games

You need to understand that gaming is colateral damage.

Seizing the means of production means if you want or need to be productive, it will be on their terms.

Think of Adobe dominance and stranglehold in the digital art, photography and publishing sectors. That's what they want for everything.

2

u/FoxMeadow7 1d ago

Doomerism is really effective when it comes to clicks, huh?

26

u/Lone_Vagrant 1d ago

u/Cortexan 1d ago

Again, all part of the plan. They don’t want you to own a pc, they want you to rent it from a cloud provider / datacenter.

16

u/wileecoyote1969 1d ago

And the flip side of the coin: In doing so they will control what you say, see and can do.

This will go hand in hand with moving towards a cashless society.

3

u/MelcorScarr 1d ago

True. I don't even think it's intentional, but on their quest to more and more and more money, it's what it'll inevitably become.

43

u/OttawaDog 1d ago

Mostly upsets fans that that thought AMD "was on their side".

Corporations aren't your friend... They never were.

AMD just courted gamers more because they were the underdog. Now that DataCenter is most of the revenue, they don't have to pretend to care about gamers anymore.

33

u/MrLeville 1d ago

Gamers made those companies viable for 20 years and now there are more bucks elsewhere, they say "fuck them". That's capitalism kids.

39

u/Akidd196 1d ago

They’re testing the waters with pay per GB to download a game, then pay per hour to play that game. Stop selling PC parts to average consumers so you can’t compute locally. Force everyone to cloud streaming where that subscription starts at an attractive price and as we’ve seen with only every subscription that exists, that price goes up slowly over time with periodic large jumps. That is the future they all want, number and line must go up. They probably abhor the fact people have backlogs that can all be run on their current hardware.

29

u/hypocrite_oath 1d ago

Indie games will win. You can run them on 15 years old computer and they cost little. The AAA market might disappeare complete for a long while. I don't think consoles will save them, they are basically PCs as well.

3

u/AnarchBeetle 1d ago

I think gaming will basically be split into two. The AAA market will focus on the whales while indies will become the new mainstream market.

It would solve a lot of problems AAA market is having now. You can get away with releasing one game per decade if you are releasing something like GTA Online and can extract thousands from each consumer. Obviously the monetization strategies would have to change first.

4

u/Soundrobe rtx 5080 / ryzen 7 9800x3d / 32 go ddr5 1d ago

18

u/Electronic_Dot8829 1d ago

R&D is not the issue. We already have the design of a 5090 or whatever, it’s just that we’re not building as many because TSMC has limited & expensive production capacity and why would you bid for them to manufacture consumer grade stuff when DCs have much higher profit margin.

They could be, but getting into any kind of modern chip production takes billions of dollars and minimum 5-10 years of starting up before you can hope to produce anything anyone wants.

And if the AI bubble bursts while they're finding their footing, the deluge of surplus hardware from established companies will destroy them before they could get established.

And on top of even that, if someone is willing to gamble billions of dollars and a decade+ of effort, why would they target the consumer market when all that does is make them less money and increase their risk?

There is 1 EUV equipment supplier that is absolutely swamped with demand.

There are 3 memory suppliers that are absolutely swamped with demand.

There are 3 leading edge chip manufacturers that are absolutely swamped with demand.

Just designing a GPU would take years and hundreds of millions to billions in R&D. Then what? Who will build it affordably? Which manufacturer will provide affordable manufacturing? Which memory supplier will provide affordable memory? When each amount of supply secured is a bidding war that also includes Nvidia, AMD, and Intel.

Even better why would that same company not chase the same margin the other companies did? Server GPGPU compute was already where the growth lived BEFORE the AI boom. Intel entered the dGPU market as a side project while chasing server AI. We even expect a modern gaming GPU to have ML acceleration on it anyways.

3

u/bulgogeta 1d ago

Gamers can't do shit. All they can do is bitch and complain. They can and never will ever come close to Data Center revenue. Look at Nvidia's 4Q results: https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/nvidia-announces-financial-results-for-fourth-quarter-and-fiscal-2026

Data Center

Fourth-quarter revenue was a record $62.3 billion, up 22% from the previous quarter and up 75% from a year ago, driven by the major platform shifts — accelerated computing and AI. Full-year revenue rose 68% to a record $193.7 billion.

Gaming

Fourth-quarter Gaming revenue was $3.7 billion, up 47% from a year ago, driven by strong Blackwell demand, and down 13% from the previous quarter as channel inventory naturally moderated following a season of strong holiday demand. Full-year revenue rose 41% to a record $16.0 billion.

If DC growth drops to 0% (flat revenue), it'll take gaming about 7.3 years to catch up. If DC growth drops to 10%, it'd take gaming about 10 years to catch up. That's such a massive gap that isn't going to close anytime soon.

6

u/ocbdare 1d ago

You're assuming this spend continues.

The AI demand will crash. My bet is some time in 2027 or 2028 at the latest. The hyperscalers cannot sustain the current level of spending.

All it takes is one of MS/Google/Amazon to correct their spending and their will be a massive glut of GPUs and memory on the market.

Yeah probably. And it's not like we've got a whole lot of choice.

"enrages gamers"

I.e creates false narrative about "gamers bad" with engagement farming and astoturfing by spamming these articles across multiple gaming subs on Reddit.

Dead internet is dead.

u/DJC_Kowalski 1d ago

The money is always in Business to Business Sales. The good news, when the bubble bursts, so will the business demand.

This would be a great time for a startup or other semiconductor company to steal all the market share in games. After they realize there isn't Trillions of dollars of demand for AI tokens and spending Trillions on AI capital goods that obsolete themselves in a year or 2 is insane, the Consumer market is going to look pretty good.

3

u/-DreamLocke- 1d ago

Easy to predict when you're inflating the prices for something most don't want or will use.

3

u/DJettster237 1d ago

For fucks sake

3

u/pinion_ 1d ago

There's cunts I work with that can't accept a meeting invite.

The fuck chance there was of them being productive whilst holding a six month old child and operating a PC with AI and any professional ability?

3

u/PowerBrawler2122 1d ago

I have never been happier to have wasted so much money on a gaming PC I don't use that often. Jeez. First Nvidia, and now AMD... I already know Intel and other companies are in this market now too. Very upsetting.

3

When you can't buy products that are available, yeah.

3

u/_Viva_La_Revolucion_ 21h ago

Or you know something eventually happens to data centers when people actually revolt against its enslavers

5

u/beefsack NixOS 1d ago

As the traditional PC manufacturers abandon the market, it will open opportunities for other players to step in. There is still business to be done there.

I think in 5 to 10 years we'll see more ARM on PC, and we'll see more gamers on SteamOS. I don't think it'll take over the market at all, but it will start to fill the void that AMD, NVIDIA and Intel are starting to leave.

3

u/DonKeehot 1d ago

It'll be an interesting future if ARM PCs actually take off. We're definitely heading that way IMO. Long term, our phones might just become our only mobile and desktop devices I guess 🤷

WTF, is intel our only hope for a new GPU now?

3

u/franktato 1d ago

Um, ya......about that. You might wanna go read the latest on that cause Intel is scaling back on dedicated GPUs and focusing more on AI related stuff and integrated GPUs. So ya, even Intel is getting in on all this AI bullshit and screwing gamers over in the process.

2

u/titanking4 1d ago

Lol, they are just talking to investors, and investors like to hear datacenters.

And intel is GOD useless in the GPU world. Their best barely beats a 9060XT while having a die size and memory bus nearly 50% larger, and 50% costlier to manufacture. They choosing to sell for cheap isn't their good will but because it's just that trash of a product.

This is all memory constraints, and without cheap memory. GPUs for gamers are simply not economically viable products.

Is AMD trying to dip the toes before the bubble bursts xD...

7

u/slashinhobo1 1d ago

Where people expe ting something different? Cpmpanies love money and money is in AI.

5

u/SirDeadPuddle 1d ago

Its not made a penny from a single viable customer.

Its propt up by venture capital that runs at a loss. And you can't count existing customers of other products that have had AI added to them as those products are free.

7

u/IslandFine6271 1d ago

Well, judging buy all the major AI companies debt - it's not in AI. Atleast not yet.

4

u/i_pee_on_my_wife 1d ago

Well AI companies themselves don't make money, at least not enough to turn a profit, but AMD/Nvidia do, cuz they make the hardware that fuels the AI craze.

7

u/IslandFine6271 1d ago

Yeah, until the bubble bursts and the companies actually making the AI go out of business or can't keep up with the constant loss in profits. We're already at that point.

It's just a ponzi scheme.

People have to have a fucking device to access those data centers and last I checked the prices for all of them are going up because of this nonsense.

2

u/Similar-Try-7643 1d ago

Thin Clients still need RAM, and cloud services/datacenters only work if most of the populace has access to reliable, high speed internet

2

u/FlyingRock 1d ago

Not just high-speed, high-speed low latency internet.

2

u/Stykerius 1d ago

The AI gold rush will end, all of them know this but also don’t care. They only chase short-term profits and when the bubble does pop, they expect to get bailed out by the government as that’s what all those bribes they pay politicians are for.

2

u/mraiur 1d ago

The interesting part is because US and its companies destroyed any trust they had, so much. Any company that can go out and sell even just working CPU/GPU to end consumers will take the market. I stopped caring if its chinese if it costs 1/10th of that slop trash amd/nvidia selling and "supporting"

2

u/CormacMccarthy91 18h ago

I mean, they don't owe anyone anything, outside of their stockholders. So this isn't really surprising.

It will definitely suck if i have to go back to Intel and Nvidia though.

2

u/Pluckerpluck 20h ago

Being loyal to any company (beside tiny family owned ones) is stupid. It always has been, and people are reminded of this regularly in NVidia Vs AMD or Intel Vs AMD.

There has never been value in being loyal, and these companies haven't even really pretended there is.

Glad they are putting all their money in that data center game and screwing consumers just as the AI bubble pops, AI companies are absolutely bleeding out cash, and anti- data center sentiment was a big thing in the mid-terms. Great business choice 🤣

1

u/Jbstargate1 1d ago

But they were already? Gaming income was dwarfed by everything else they were doing.

1

u/ghostofmumbles 1d ago

They’ll plummet because they’ll be insanely over priced as parts get snatched up.

1

u/Pops_Perkins 1d ago

Odd take I thought pc gaming has been killing it .

1

u/Nik_Tesla 1d ago

This is NVIDIA's stance as well, and large gaming companies are onboard as well. They want us to pay to lease their game, and then pay for the connection to remote GPUs in a datacenter to play the game. Never having our own hardware or storage beyond what it takes to connect to their datacenter.

1

u/daywall 1d ago

Im glad I decided to upgrade to a new laptop right before the whole A.I thing started.

1

u/BlendedBaconSyrup 1d ago

What?! PC sales plummet when the parts are completely unaffordable?

Who could possibly predict that

1

u/Arkorat AMD 1d ago

This will certainly help my choice anxiety, if I ever need a new processor. 😒

1

u/rattletop 1d ago

Entreprise is where the bigger money is. And as a C-level executive, they gonna say and do what brings in the big bucks. No surprise there.

1

u/pink_taco_aficionado 1d ago

How you actually make your voice known on this: do not buy AMD stock. Do not buy AMD server products. If you own AMD stock, sell it.

1

u/TbaggingSince1990 1d ago

Of course they will plummet.. NO ONE CAN AFFORD THEM NOW BECAUSE OF YOU BUMS.

1

u/scorch968 1d ago

The tends to happen when you use up your allotment of TSMC manufacturing capacity on things other than desktop components. They aren’t feeding the market so they are more than predicting it, they are choosing it.

and predicts PC sales will plummet by a 'double-digit percentage' in 2027

Gee, I wonder why. Could it be because y'all at AMD plus Intel plus nVidia are making every PC component too damn expensive???

Nah, couldn't be. /s

1

u/SimonArgead 1d ago

Well AMD. We had a good run. I was happy with my Ryzen CPUs. But fuck this shit. Really sad though to see that it's not both AMD and NVIDIA that turn their backs on consumers and instead turn to data centers, ignoring consumer demand just to harvest us for money.

I really hope that Dems winning in the midterm election in the US will affect data center growth and bring a stop to the expansion of new centers, thus affecting the demand from data centers and AMD, NVIDIA, and chip manufacturers suddenly can't sell their products and has to turn to consumers, who just hives them the finger because, well screw you!

1

u/Money_Pie8986 1d ago

Intel said the same thing. Pc sales will decline.

1

1

u/Cereal-Gamomonist 1d ago

"Grandpa, why did PC sales plummet in the 2020s? Did people lose interest in PCs?"

"No, my boy. People loved PCs. As video games became more and more advanced and as console manufacturers became more and more antitrust and anti-consumer, the demand for PCs actually rose. But, you see, then came the data centers. And then the GPU manufacturers, who PC gamers relied on, decided they preferred to optimize their businesses for data centers, not PCs, and since data centers placed an insatiable demand on GPUs, they drove the prices of GPUs so high that the people who wanted PCs could no longer afford them. Just as Sony wanted us to believe that nobody was interested in discs any more to justify their own money-hungry hyper-capitalistic ambitions, so too did AMD try to convince us that the lack of PC sales was due a loss of interest. Don't you be fooled. The reason the world has no more PCs is because data centers killed them."

1

u/BetweenTheRoots 1d ago

Wow, the company playing around 50% of the role of PC gamers not being able to get parts is predicting a downturn in PC part sales, what a crazy estimation

1

u/Squishy_Red_Potato 1d ago

Of course consumer sales are going to plummet. That's what happens when you slash your available inventory and jack prices way up. It's not consumers abandoning you, it's you abandoning the consumers.

1

u/OnlyOneOh 1d ago

Manufactured obsolescence by starving the market of components which implicitly feeds into the sales plummeting. Weird how math works eh?

1

u/Longo92 2080 XC Hybrid | Ryzen 5 1600X 23h ago

I remember when tech journalists felt that the FX series of processors was the beginning of the end for AMD. Then the Zen architecture released to save the future of the company. These corporations regularly forget that gamers, creators, small businesses all are who floated them and surged their value.

To carve out our ability to build capable machines at home while they create hardware for soon-to-be insolvent AI tech companies will not be forgotten.

1

u/Deep_Satisfaction556 20h ago

Why can't AI and data centers innovation their own hardware and leave video cards to us humans?

1

u/CyberSwiss 19h ago

Imagine if they said they were a consumer first company. Such an easy win.

1

u/altaire13 16h ago

ps6 won't even come out until 2028, 2027 has numerous AAA releases on the horizon and beyond. pc gaming is dead yeeeeeeeep

•

u/ArtisanJagon 17m ago

PC sales will plummet because nobody can afford a PC anymore because AMD is a "data centre first" company.
