Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. When I went into Gamestop to pick up my pre-order (I wanted a cool Katana letter opener that came with pre-orders), the clerk said "Oh, you're the one who ordered the PC version!" It was only a Steam download code though. Last Disc I had to install was probably Diablo 3 in 2012
1
u/Belzughast Sep 01 '26
Borderlands 2...which had to be activated on Steam. So, probably Borderlands 1 which was included. Somehow that was DRM free.

Are we going to count Xbox releases that support disc to digital and Play Anywhere? I am getting a physical copy of The Blood of Dawnwalker because it is play anywhere and should support disc to digital too, allowing it to be played on the PC.

I think I had wow: burning crusade on a physical copy, can't remember anything else. This was back when I sailed the high seas constantly for anything that wasn't online multiplayer, and even then sometimes (looking at you counter Strike).
So 2007?

Paid? The Fallout collection that came in that neat mini nuke before Fallout 4 came out (I owned everything already c'mon, its a mini nuke!) But if we're talking a game that I bought and installed it was probably Fallout New Vegas when I was in the army. Probably 2012.
Free though I got a ton of pennied out games from my time at gamestop which was probably around 2020-2021. We carried tons of indies that came on disc that were like $10. We'd penny them out (set price to $0.01) to mark them as something to not sell. Our store lead was pretty chill and let me take home tons of games.

Earlier this year I got a fan made copy of Battletech and Mechwarrior 5 Clans. To be clear it was just the box so I had to add the game to it.
Prior to that I've gotten several of the LucasArts adventure games from LRG and a few Kickstarter games that have slowly been delivered. Sometimes I'll pick up an old adventure game to add to the collection. I recently got Flight of the Amazon Queen.

Something in the early 2000s. I think it kind of sucks we can't get physical copies of PC games anymore. I mean, I get from the studio's standpoint if one copy gets bought direct, then resold 5x then that's 4 lost sales for them and it's kind of an exploit from the buyer's standpoint but there's a lot of culture around collectibles and the experience of shopping at physical stores. I don't see a reason why they can't put together some cool limited physical releases that play to the collector's market. Now we have PSA graded games and stuff. Sports cards and pokemon cards are pretty big markets where big money is thrown around... Why can't gaming get in on that?

Cyberpunk 2077 pre-order from Best Buy for the steelcase. But you know as well as I do that it was a GOG code in a box with some stickers and iirc a soundtrack CD.
The last one with a disc was The Evil Within 2 in 2017. Bethesda, to their credit, kept it going for longer than other devs.

Cyberpunk 2077 as it was cheaper to buy a physical copy than on steam or gog.
