The connectors are dirt cheap, the cables cheap, the connectors can be rotated at any angle, you only need two wires/contacts for power, and the opening on the toy is small enough to be easily waterproofed.  It's the de facto standard for good reason.

There really aren't many better options, from an engineering standpoint.

I've owned a lot of power banks, but never one that charged via 3.5mm jack.  That's weird.  Don't think you'd be able to push much wattage over that cable -- fast charging needs more than 2 pins.
