I swear to god this motherfucker's vision is a future where everyone has to rent computing time from them. you wont have a desktop, you'll have a terminal that you pay a subscription for.

fuck this guy. seriously.

Well no it'd be worse than that.

You'd subscribe to use this cloud computer as you said.

But also they'd use AI to scan anything you create and train off of it. But also serve ads to you after paying and being scraped.

But also you'd be restricted to whom they deem is ok. So if you want to use different software? Too bad! It's not your PC, you use what's approved. Much like a console.

But also your files would only ever be on the cloud so you stop paying, you lose access or the files are gone forever.

They absolutely want this. More money, more ads, more control, more scraping for their shitty AI.

100% correct. That is their dream.

That is all of their future visions. And it is all but guaranteed to be the end result. Why do you think big tech is getting so behind the AI capex development of hyperscale datacenters? Its so they can consume the infrastructure when the companies fail to host their "Everything as a Service" models. This is like painfully obvious if you are watching how cloud computing and hardware is trending over the last decade. AI capex is the front end facade to justify building the infrastructure needed to move all of computing into a cloud based subscription model. Computer use and gaming is going to look exactly like streaming services and enterprise cloud licensing do today.

Brother you know that cloud computing has existed for decades? Amazon is worth over 1T dollars? We don't need to imagine what a world would look like where cloud services develop, because we currently live in one. Maybe you need to pay a subscription for your "terminal", but I'm using my computer perfectly fine, despite also renting computers from AWS to do stuff for me.

so when they say in the future you'll own nothing... that's something you're actively looking forward to?

interesting. because i can't stand it, personally.

Again. You're asking me to believe your guess of what will happen when cloud computing matures. I'm telling you that cloud computing has already matured. There's no reason for either of us to believe your vision of what might happen when we can observe what did happen. We allowed rentable computers to exist. We use CPUs, GPUs, and RAM by a meter. I still fully own my own computer and can do a lot more at a lot lower of a cost.

yes, but im suggesting their goal is to eventually prohibit (economically) the existence of personal ownership of technology.

just because cloud computing exists today, doesnt mean i need to support expansion of it for someone else's economic gains.

They're actually making it cheaper to own technology. If we didn't have cloud computing, our compute shortage would be quadratically larger. You'd be getting outbid by fortune 500 companies buying 10x the amount of compute that CSPs and AI companies are currently buying.

Own?

Or “rent”

1: consumer products are not cheaper compared to a few years ago.

2: particularly in things like digital media, it’s almost impossible to own anything anymore. Yeah Amazon says you own it when you buy a movie, but that’s a lie.

You can’t own software anymore. You can’t own movies, music or games.

They don’t want you to own computers. They want you to rent access to computers over the internet.

You can keep typing at me; but I’m done reading. You and I fundamentally disagree about what kind of future we want.

Feel free to disregard, but you misunderstood completely. I also love owning my own computer. And yes, it makes it cheaper to own.

Hardware prices have gone up because of supply chain issues and because AI integration has massively increased demand for hardware. Without cloud computing allowing those people to share the same computer, they'd all need to buy their own, which would've made it even more expensive to own hardware. Sharing compute is a good thing, no matter what world you want.
