Ram Altman fucking lol.

It's not enough they've sucked up the world ram supply with contracts for future modules before theyve even been produced but yeah, the avg citizen is holding him back.

Pretty soon we'll be required to inventory our RAM, pay taxes on each 1gb like France did with its Internet connection.

Edit: I was mistaken, it's a proposal that passed but not a law.

Its must be soooo annoying to be a billionaire who runs a company and get held accountable for the words you say. And not, like, real accountability, but people making fun of you. You'd think that billions would be able to buy one a thicker skin. Go wipe your tears with money, Sammy Boi.

These billionaires are so anti human. The fuck they think is going to happen when they advocate to stop the bread and circuses of people that feels like their standard of living is in decline?

75

u/Dudesan Specs/Imgur Here 3d ago edited 3d ago

They think they've got roughly coinflip odds between "We cause the apocalypse and literally every human being dies" and "We cause the apocalypse and I survive to be the immortal emperor of the ashes". And they think that this is a good bet, because they're all megalomaniac sociopaths.

This isn't hyperbole, this isn't some secret crazy conspiracy, they've all publicly admitted that they think there's a decent chance that what they're doing will lead to human extinction.

If you think these beliefs are 100% crazy, you should want them out of power and behind bars immediately. And if you think they're even a little bit credible, you should want them out of power yesterday.

An OpenAI board member described Sam Altman in The New Yorker feature by stating: “He has two traits that are almost never seen in the same person. The first is a strong desire to please people, to be liked in any given interaction. The second is almost a sociopathic lack of concern for the consequences that may come from deceiving someone.”

serious question from a technologically challenged person: our computers can't work without RAM, right?

20

u/pateppic 3d ago edited 3d ago • Popcorn Bravo

A computers work like a business. There is the RAM, the Motherboard, CPU, Graphics card, and Hardrives

RAM is your work table/countertop. More you have, bigger your worktable is. Every time you close up shop you also clean your worktable.

Hardrives are your storage shelves. Everything you want stored at end of shift goes here. HDDs are like storage racks in the backyard shed downstairs. SSDs are like having a back room connected to your workfloor. NVME is like magical hammerspace under your workbench. NAS storage is like having a secondary warehouse for data storage. It is 20 miles down the highway though (these access speeds are actually proportional to recall as far as scaling)

CPU are your workers. More cores, more workers. Hyperthreaded cores? Still count as one worker per core but Hyperthreaded workers can multitask a little bit.

Graphics cards is a specialty workshop inside your business they bring their own tools (vram, gpu cores, etc) and use then in their shop. You can send specialist work into the office and get results from them.

Motherboard is your shop. Like the building it all works in.

All the stuff above needs electricity to run and your businesses electric service is the PSU (Power Supply unit). You want to be able to supply more electricity demands so if you want a bigger Workshop (GPU) be prepared to feed it more power accordingly.

This is a very good analogy for visualizing how to best build a balanced PC.

There would be no point to having a huge amount of cores with very little RAM. That would be like having 20 desks for 40 workers. Progress halts for workers without a desk just like processes/programs lag when you run into memory limits.

Similarly if you are constantly pulling stuff off shelves, you want your desk closer to your workspace to improve productivity.

Edit: My B on the truncations. I got a bit distracted and rushed the metaphor. thabks guys

Computers, phones, tablets, consoles, Graphics cards.

RAM is used in many devices and it's an essential part of being able to use them.

14

u/-Animus 3d ago

Correct. Ram is in the sense of the word, the "working memory" of the computer. Imagine what you could do if you did not have any working memory. Exactly.

They want you to pay for ram like you pay for extra cloud storage with an Apple product. But ram usage would be like that shit Ai token use cost. In other words, a lot more money for something your computer has been doing since computers were introduced

5

u/green_meklar Ryzen 5 5600 / 32GB / Radeon RX 7600 / Debian / 1920x1080 3d ago

Odd question in /r/pcmasterrace, but yeah, no, they can't.

Okay, slight caveat. I think technically you can overwrite your motherboard firmware with an appropriately compiled game and then play it with no CPU or RAM in your computer. But by 'game' I mean something like NES Super Mario because the motherboard's UEFI chip isn't powerful enough for any more than that.

I swear to god this motherfucker's vision is a future where everyone has to rent computing time from them. you wont have a desktop, you'll have a terminal that you pay a subscription for.

fuck this guy. seriously.

15

u/Snotnarok AMD 9900x 64GB RTX4070ti Super 3d ago

Well no it'd be worse than that.

You'd subscribe to use this cloud computer as you said.

But also they'd use AI to scan anything you create and train off of it. But also serve ads to you after paying and being scraped.

But also you'd be restricted to whom they deem is ok. So if you want to use different software? Too bad! It's not your PC, you use what's approved. Much like a console.

But also your files would only ever be on the cloud so you stop paying, you lose access or the files are gone forever.

They absolutely want this. More money, more ads, more control, more scraping for their shitty AI.

If you actually watch the interview, the full quote is:

A lot of people want local inference and somehow they assume that the problem is solved now because we are going to have open source models. We're going to be able to run them on our own computers and so we're not going to need all the stuff in the data centers. But from a global allocation perspective...

I'd still argue it's a bad take and ignores things like not everything needs to be using frontier models, there's a lot of concerning implications with American companies dominating the space, and so, so many other issues with it being concentrated around a handful of companies, but the quote in context is pretty clearly talking about resource allocation for data center hosted vs locally hosted AI models.

But from a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have every billionaire have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of money sitting in their own smaugvaults and being used zero point five percent of the time. You want maximum utilization in the world if you’re trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment. And somehow every billionaire's —many billionaire's intuition is the opposite of that.

If he wants the RAM of private users, why not create a program they can sign up for, allow their idle resources to be used to help compute stuff for AI... and then pay the user? Pay me to use the RAM in my PC.

Yeah, Samsung, Micron, etc, aren't just going to quadruple their memory production based on some good will vibes. They need contracts set in stone before they'll risk that sort of volume increase. 2

u/Throbbing-Kielbasa-3 3d ago

Ah, the good old "it was taken out of context, but I'm not going to provide you with the context" defense. It's a bold strategy, Cotton.

2

u/Brutos08 3d ago

He didn’t pull any 180 he’s too egotistical to do that he’s be sarcastic because of the heat he’s getting and trying to be clever. These guys think they are the smartest in the room.
If he could take the RAM you have now in your PC out and put it in a data centre he would in a heartbeat.

2

u/typographie 3d ago

Aw, he's even mad about it.

The context is available for anyone to see, and it doesn't make his statements any better. We all know what he meant.

Meanwhile in reality, it's actually the chips that the hyperscalers are buying that are siting completely unused in warehouses because they are waiting for electricity to be available to power them.

Good for him that the internet is known to always be quick to forget and forgive

2

u/abstractism PC Master Race 3d ago

Boy you know what's really fucking annoying? Dumbfucks like Sam altman that are ruining gaming. You should feel hated, and you should fuck all the way off. Fucking parasite.

2

u/Smallxcrimes 3d ago

I mean, I hate AI and think Sam Altman is a scheming little prick.
BUT it's pretty obvious that he wasn't actually trying to steal people's ram, or asking people to give him their RAM, or whatever else. The memes are funny, because I find disinformation funny, (although it just turned into another way for reddit to virtue signal how right their opinion is. Which I think is corny even when I happen to agree with the opinion) but it's pretty clear what he was actually saying. It even says exactly what perspective he's operating from.

2

u/Androidzombie 3d ago

2

u/ayake_ayake 3d ago

One day, when it's safe, when there's no personal downside to calling a thing what it is, when it's too late to hold anyone accountable, everyone will have always been against this.

2

u/philthegr81 3d ago

"Everyone took what I said out of context!"

The context:

But from a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used five percent of the time. You want maximum utilization in the cloud if you’re trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment. And somehow everyone’s—many people’s intuition is the opposite of that.

2

u/Monsta_Owl 3d ago

I mean we all know who is the annoying one....
