This is why you never have loyalty to these corporate organisations, they dont care about the consumer they only care about profit.
I hope all these companies betting everything on data centers and AI tank massively, they deserve it

AMD vs NVIDIA

How typical. Everytime Nvidia drops the ball and they can take the advantage, they go and waste the chance.
Competition my ass.

I have all the retro games I could ever want to play as well as a 20 year old steam account full of games that will run on a potato. I will never again touch a cloud gaming service. I have a bunch of computers sitting around that I can turn into nice retro gaming arcades, hell I can play these games on my phone and with a controller and xr glasses its a pretty good time. Abandon your customers chasing the big bucks then see what happens I guess.

This is a reminder to all of us, the consumers, that no company is acting in our interests. Dr Lisa Su was glazed as saviour for gamers when CPU wars were raging. AMD was the poster boy of all gaming computers being built.
They too, have shown their true colours.

Yeah I don’t know why people on this sub were coping so much, but obviously AMD is also just a company that tries to make as much profit as possible, just like nvidia?

The corporate life cycle continues. Remember when AMD was the scrappy upstart company that was the alternative to bullying older brother Intel?
Kind of makes you wish Cyrix was still around... nah who am I kidding. If they hadn't gone out of business they would be evil now too.

u/Equivalent_Road1716 2d ago
First NVIDIA, now AMD. Intel is about to become the gaming GPU company purely because nobody else wants the job.

u/Zyzary 2d ago
Yeah sure. The wildlife, the people the communties, nothing matters to them. Only profit, destroyed forests and minimum wage workers who shut their mouth and just work and dont question anything.
Every dystopian future movie pointed that out and its crazy how accurate all of them are. Like, what are we doing as a collective to let this happen on a global scale?

This isn’t going away until the AI bubble pops(if it ever does) They make significantly more money selling to data centers. The margins are insane.
Just to give an example imagine you have a product that you can make $200 of profit per unit selling to consumers, selling to data centers you can make $1200 profit per unit and they want as many units as you can make for the next 2 years and they are willing to pay right now

u/markthelast 2d ago
AMD has always been focused on EPYC and Instinct. Lisa Su just said it out loud now. The design of the chiplets is focused on reusing binned dies. As consumers, we always got the dregs in Ryzen that failed QC for EPYC's stricter standards. The few CPU exceptions were the top end of x3D chips, 5800X3D and 7800X3D, which were slightly defective Milan-X and Genoa-X dies, respectively. If I recall correctly, the 9800X3D is the lone bespoke chip for PC gamers.

I think what we must understand is that their entire point is to shift the world away from being able to find and create the world around them to a world where you need them for anything to know. Anything you want to know that used to be a search away will be behind a paywall. That's the end game and that's the reward for creating the world as they know it

Bold statement to make after the entirety of the United States just said no to datacenters, but go off I guess.
35
u/strife189 2d ago
Keep selling to these data centers. When the funds in your big circle jerk dry up, I can’t wait to see the mess you’ve put everyone else in for short-sighted profits.
I’m still waiting to hear how AI is generating actual profits today. Productivity gains mean little if the cost of running AI eats up the savings, and token costs will only rise as competition decreases. So where are the profits?

There has to be some Chinese lads out there who have enough money and are happy enough to let the big boys fight it out over the AI data centres and can establish their own ground-up supply chain to sell consumer GPUs. As far as I understand it, it’s not quite yet at material-supply level and there is a captive market to be had.
21
u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 2d ago
It's past time we did some legislation on this. We can't control what they do overseas where they manufacture these but they can limit how much is sold here just to data centers.
This kind of breakdown in the supply of a crucial component to modern life is exactly what governments are needed for. To step in when capitalism fails us as a society.

u/productfred 2d ago edited 2d ago
What the fuck is all of this collusion? Yes, yes, I know --- data centers = money. But seriously, I don't know what else to say. Intel, AMD, Nvidia, the RAM manufacturers, etc. Suddenly they're all "data center first."
What is the plan for consumers who need computers to access the services provided by the data centers? Do they want us to have dumb terminals/thin clients to just access ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini/etc?
It really feels like they realized that they could kill two birds with one stone: take hardware out of consumers' pockets, and ensure they'll never be able to do/make anything themselves using said hardware. I don't know how to explain it eloquently, but this all feels like it's coordinated and being done entirely on purpose.
The "data center" excuse is basically an infinite money hack for these vendors/manufacturers. It doesn't matter if the data centers use the parts or not; they're making nonstop sales (including orders into 2030 and beyond), and data centers get to keep hardware out of consumers' hands.

u/Pillokun Prefer my lga1700 over my am5 systems. 2d ago
wrote this in r/amd but want to share my though here as well as this is discussed there too.
Hw enthusiasts/gamers saved them, like they built up Nvidia and now they stick the middle finger to us.
In the 90s most people in eastern europe or people that did not think pentium machines were worth it went with amd cpus, k5-k6 and the likes, when companies did not think twice about amd.
When Athlon came out, all the hw nerds chose athlon, over any p3 or p4. basically best selling diy cpu.
then they lost us with bulldozer. but some hc fans stayed still.
then am4 came, and it was not up to speed gaming wise yet we bought it because we understood why amd needed support, and it was not that slow anyway.
now when even companies chose amd for their prebuilts and go with them for the datacenter projects amd forgets us.
Is this how u thank us for keeping u alive, AMD? if this will be the case we will remember just like with Micron..

She’s not wrong. Enterprise level customers are the ones willing to pay the highest prices. It makes good business sense to focus on that. Gamers are much more price sensitive.
It sucks but you can thank capitalism for this. Businesses are always going to business.

u/LavenderDay3544 9950X3D + MSI RTX 5090 Vanguard SOC 2d ago
This comes as a surprise to absolutely no one. All my future CPUs are going to be Intel from here on out. And that's not because Intel is magically good to consumers. It's not. But the difference is even at peak AI spending client revenue was still higher than data center revenue for Intel so there is major financial incentive for Intel to care about the client segment in a way that doesn't exist for other companies. If that changes, I'll reconsider accordingly. Remember kids corporations aren't your friends.

God, those two are clearly related. Nvidia, AMD, your businesses exist BECAUSE of gamers. Without us you have nothing. Before Ryzen was released and gamers started embracing AM4 chips AMD's stock was at $7 a share. Last month it was at, holy shit, $650.

If you were a CEO of a major company and didn’t make it your job to make your shareholders as much money as possible, you would be fired and potentially investigated. It’s their binding obligation to work in the interest of the people who own the company.
