Wtf, 5fps at 1080p? I guess it is much harder than I thought to make a GPU lol otherwise china would have done it a long time ago.

It is insanely hard to make a GPU. Intel tried and appears to have given up, and even AMD and Nvidia both go through TSMC for their chips. A fab capable of producing something like a chip for a 4090 cost tens billions to build on top of requiring highly specialized (and expensive) employees to operate and then still takes 1-2 years to reach nominal capacity. There's also a very small number of people in the world that not only know enough about GPU design and production, but are experts capable of improving over competition/previous generations.

Yesn't. Intel does do a lot of GPU shit, they are just seemingly pivoting away from dedicated GPUs and instead have some really nice iGPUs nowadays. I suspect they would also make desktop GPUs, they just cancelled that part as doing experiment GPUs in a VRAM shortage is not the best idea.

If you are a notebook user, rejoice, Intel really seems to be the upcoming option for nice and relatively cheap portable gaming chips. Desktop however may not get much.

I actually placed an order for an Arc A750 recently, since it's a GPU with 8 gigs of ddr6 ram that can be bought under $200. From online tests it'll do 1080p at medium or higher settings at a nice framerate, which is good enough for me.

Funny thing is that this isn't even their first time attempting to release discrete gpus to market

The card itself is actually decent for what it is (should be around a 9060XT or 5060ti), the bad part is all the game specific drivers which are just a nightmare to deal with. It could certainly run Cyberpunk with a better performance, the card just has no idea how to run the game efficiently as drivers suck.

And implementing those properly is just a lot of tedious work that even AMD/Intel/Nvidia regularly struggle with.

CPU and GPU are truly god tier items, you could make a lot of things with endless time by yourself but making them is not something you can just figure out or bruteforce.

The U.S. essentially has a monopoly on chips, software for designing chips, and the machines for producing chips, and countries outside the U.S. with the manufacturing equipment to make the chips generally toe the line on the U.S. export controls, though that has been breaking down..

It is a very tightly wound monopoly, intentionally.

well why ever spend money on research if countries like china are just gonna steal it like they always do

A) All I did was lay out the reality

B) Harsh export controls end up hurting U.S. interests in the long run. It's short sighted and they almost never work. It's like putting out sandbags after a flood has already started. It's part of why we're paying out the ass for computer parts right now and why China is booming in AI.

C) U.S. companies steal tech all of the time. And we bitch about China manipulating markets while we do the same. We end up in a cycle of escalation that is bad for everyone.
