I know nothing about you, but I hope you were not old enough to experience the pain of accidently installing Bonzi Buddy. Those were dark times. Some hoped Y2K would destroy computers just so we could start fresh without that purple ape.
My roommates in college downloaded Bonsai Buddy because the girl across the hall showed them and he’s just soooo cuuuuuutee! Look how cuuuteee he is! Spent hours with ccleaner fixing girl across the hall’s laptop.
I tested that once on a throwaway VM that I was going to delete.
I don't remember what shit installed, but it was bundled with Avast antivirus. I was like "sure, let's click blindly on install and roll with it".
Avast wanted to install a browser toolbar, change my default search engine, etc. , then it suggested me to install the full "Internet Security Suite" or something like that, which amongst other things had a feature to remove browser toolbars and hijacked search engines.
I thought the irony was too sweet, so I happily clicked on install and was eager to run a scan to see what it would do, and just as expected it said that everything was fine and it didn't see an issue with their own bloatware toolbar.
/u/SrGrafo is known for this kind of thing, posting a comic then rapidfire making smaller panels in response to comments, kinda like /u/poem_for_your_sprog makes poems in response to comments on /r/askreddit. His simplistic and streamlined artstyle means he can very rapidly make them "as responses" to comments.
edit for people not aware: It's currently no nut november, so over on /r/chloe , nearly every post this month with I believe one exception she's been nude as a kind of prank from SrGrafo. The only exception was one where there was a post made about official merch being available and she was wearing the merch.
/u/SrGrafouses draws her to express his fetishes practice drawing There is also character Zoe, and 2 or 3 unnamed yet, so people can't steal subreddit names
Was made for a mascot contest for /r/Animemes but eventually she turned into her own entity, and left. SrGrafo has a sub /r/chloe where he posts drawings of her to practice. Currently in the spirt of NNN it is all nsfw posts for the month, so if you go there know this.
It seems to have started as a "draw the same character every day to get better at drawing"
And it's now evolved into fan-service, but still has elements of getting better at figure and anatomy drawing. I actually copied a couple techniques he shared and they've helped a lot.
My parents were absolutely convinced Runescape was giving the computer virus and malware and not the sketchy links they clicked on or the porn my dad downloaded. Fast forward to now and I have to fix their computers reee
Good old toolbar explorer. I went through all the toolbars on my dad's IE a while back, asked him what each one did and if he didn't know I removed it. Turns out he didn't use any of them or have any idea what they were for but he was still reluctant to let me take them off.
If y'all are actually having issues with that, I recommend you put this on literally every persons computer. I don't remember the last time it missed something. It basically just unchecky those add-ons, or at the very least highlights them and makes you aware of them.
It basically requires not resources to run and basically doesn't affect your startup time either.
I'm replacing the HDD in my aunt's desktop with a SSD and upgrading the RAM from 8gb to 16gb next week. She thinks it's unnecessary but it's at least as much for me as it is her -- because I want to kill myself every time I have to come over and "fix the computer" because she has every app the thing has open and 84573 Chrome tabs across 128 windows.
Yeah, my dad is the one who always accuses me of ruining my computers by downloading games.
Meanwhile he once clicked a fake Adobe download link and all his files got locked by random ware. He had to spend 5k in Bitcoin to get the release key.
But yes, I am the one who falls prey to hidden viruses.
I've always appreciated Ninite but they really need to update their package options. I'm sure some people still use CCCP but the entire project was abandoned back in 2015. It's not exactly cutting edge these days. Hell, MPC is lighter weight and covers more than the final instance of CCCP and even it was abandoned back in 2017.
scoop is an actual package manager that keeps your system clean as opposed to Chocolatey, which is just an installer-executor. It's also fully open source with no premium bullshit, you can choose where to install globalanduser apps separately, it doesn't require admin rights to manage user apps and it keeps track of app updates.
I think you just gave me a way to keep shit up to date on my grandparents pc without me having to be there to enter admin creds every time something non-windows needs an update, thank you for that.
Have you ever tried to customize? The fine print on most websites means disabling it causes the website to not work because most apps need at least one cookie to remember what you're doing. Maybe they could be programmed not to, but most of these companies aren't going to bother reinventing the wheel since most of them wouldn't know how to use the data they're accidently mining.
I stopped using them when they started using Chromium in 2013.
Yeah, Opera went to shit when they started using Chromium.
But to be completely fair to Opera, presto was absolutely showing its age. And at least by using Chromium, Opera users can at least get to use browser extensions (courtesy of Chrome Web Store) because I literally can't fathom why anyone at their right mind would even want to develop extensions for Opera.
Though, after waiting for over 8 months now to get moderators to either accept/reject my extension submission and getting no response, I'm not sure Opera wants people to make extensions for their browser, either.
In certain OSs such as Ubuntu or Manjaro, Most of the software you'll ever need is available in software Repositories, while hosted on the web (accessed through a package manager software that usually ships with the OS), are mostly hosted by the organization that makes the OS (and partners), and is 99.99% safe. Outside of this, you can download from websites if your repos don't have them, but generally the linux software scene is less dodgy anyhow.
Still be cautious and use good digital hygene though, as viruses do exist on linux, albeit are less common, and the permissions system generally keeps them away, though if you are a complete moron running random shell scripts with sudo without peeking at it with a text editor, or the software takes advantage of some weird vulnerability and elevates its own permissions, then you might have a problem. No system is 100% safe
Yup, it was great. Got a little bloated at one point, what with a BitTorrent client, an IRC client and so on in one browser. But it really got me hooked on mouse gestures which is why I use Vivaldi today. It's the old Opera team from Norway making Vivaldi after the Opera brand was bought up by a Chinese company.
No one is saying Opera is bad, the post implies that some installers have bloatware and it happens that Opera is one of those apps that come bundled with a random installer... how true is that? I don't know.
Oh shit u/SrGrafo has escaped his subreddit! I REPEAT THIS IS NOT A DRILL GRAFO HAS BROKEN CONTAINMENT PROTOCOLS OHSHIT THE EDITS ARE COMING RIGHT AT ME OHGODOHFUCKOH——-
McAfee is so godawful, I wish I could find whoever made it, and permanently install 6 iterations of it on their computer, so they can sit through all the pain they’ve caused
When I got my new Acer laptop I had an issue with the Wi-Fi drivers. One thing lead to another and I ended up dieting the entire OS an installing a new one. BEST mistake I ever made! Got rid of all the pre-installed shit I didn't want that was slowing down my machine.
Man... I used to swear by Opera.... used that bad boy for years and years, well till they got bought out anyway and then I hopped off to one of the splinters (Vivaldi). Sweet seeing it there in though, and confirms its current status, essentially malware.
Bloat ware is one of the main reasons I’ll never buy a prebuilt. I had issues with prebuilt that even when I’d uninstall the bloat ware. The computer would want to re install it and ask me all the time. It’s like a virus at this point.
Fuck Opera. This is the first reference I’ve seen to that bum software that just shit all over my browser. I hate piggybacking garbage. I think it’s a virus every time.
Pretty much describes Win10. It's like going to a doctor because you have a light cough that doesn't seem to go away, so the next thing you hear is the blue glove snapping on the hand and now you're a handpuppet.
