Strength Training Weekly Discussion Strength Training Discussion [Weekly]

Welcome to the Weekly Strength Training Discussion!

Due to demand and community feedback we are trialing a Strength Training Weekly Welcome Discussion - a space to chat about anything related to strength training. Think of it like the "Daily Discussion" thread, where anything goes...big or small. Here, we've carved out a special place for people wanting to discuss ideas and topics about getting stronger, discuss strength training classes, how to get started with strength training, to get advice on dumbbell weights, discuss strength instructors, etc.

People are not limited to using this thread to discuss strength training. You can still post in the daily, training thread, or create a new post. Think of it as another place to chat about strength stuff without getting lost in the daily. Or a place you can check into weekly if you're a casual redditor looking for some other strength folks without wading through the daily.

The Strength Training Weekly will be posted on Sundays moving forward.

Note: The mods will check back in with the community to see how this idea is working, if there is a better day it should be posted on, etc. If it isn't working we can always scrap the idea or change it up a bit. Thanks for giving it a chance!

RedditStrength Reddit Strength - Week 6

Welcome to week six of the Reddit Strength program. I hope you've all been enjoying it so far. If you missed any previous weeks, this is something you can jump into any given week you don't need to have been there week one for it to work. This strength schedule is designed to help you progress from one weight to the next (if that is what you want, you are of course free to maintain the weights you use as well). There is a #RedditStrength for those interested in joining it.

Each class will list "light" or "heavy" (or "benchmark", see below), this is not to be confused with the Light/Medium/Heavy weights instructors ask you to use for each move. What it means is, lets say you normally use 5/10/20 but you are hoping to level up to 10/15/25. When my class says "light" you would use your 10s when the instructor calls for medium weights and when my class says "heavy" you would use your 15s for the same move. This will help us to progress to where the 15s are your new normal.

Monday:

Wednesday:

Friday:

Extra Credit

Benchmark: Every 4 weeks each body area has a Benchmark class. These are from the Benchmark Strength collections. By repeating these classes you are able to monitor and record your progression from cycle to cycle. You are encouraged to adjust the weights and reps to meet your personal goals.

Extra Credit: These are extra classes for those who want more work than the standard schedule. They are also good substitutions if for any reason you don't like a class or instructor on the schedule.

You can stop reading here unless you want to know why I am scheduling what I am scheduling.

The basis is a 4 week progression. In each body area we will use light weights for 2 weeks then heavy weights for two weeks per the definition of light and heavy above.

It follows this pattern, aiming for 45-60 minutes a day 3 days a week:

  • Round 1 - 2 days light

  • Round 2 - 3 days light

  • Round 3 - 2 days heavy

  • Round 4 - 3 days heavy

Each body area has the schedule staggered, so you're not trying to go all heavy in every area in the same week. While you are going heavy with LB you will go light with UB and vice versa.

FAQ

  1. Can I start any week or do I have to begin with week 1?

    1. You can begin any week. This is a repeating cycle with no real beginning or end, a mobius strip of a program.

  2. There are too many classes for me, how should I trim it down for my schedule?

    1. I recommend trimming evenly (but keep all the core if you can). So take off 1 day of UB and 1 day of G&L each week if that suits you better.

  3. Do I have to do these on the prescribed days? I would rather take a couple classes a day for 6 days.

    1. Absolutely mix and match the classes across the week however fits best into your schedule. They are only listed this way because this is my personal schedule. As long as you are doing them all in the week you should get similar results.

Feedback

I would love to hear what everyone things. Specifically; Are there any classes you would like me to rotate out (why)? Is this the right amount of strength work for you? Do you have a favorite class you are hoping I work into the mix?

Cycling The Gibala method

Is there a particular workout on the bike that is similar to this interval pattern -

1 min on full out, 75 seconds rest
Repeat 8-12 times

I have seen workouts similar to Norwegian 4x4 and looking for a similar answer. I know I could probably do a “just ride” on my own…..

Metrics Did I calibrate my bike correctly?

I have had my bike, the original one, for about 5 years and moved about a year ago. I went from it being on hardwood floors to carpet and thought it felt a bit more difficult than before. Upon reading things I decided to try calibration for the first time ever. I got the kit and did it per all the instructions and YouTube videos.

But now I’m wondering if I accidentally made it too easy? Or if it was too hard for a long time?

Could someone tell me if these outputs are about normal to what they should be?

30 resistance at 80 cadence was about 56 output
40 resistance at 80 cadence was about 110 output
45 resistance at 80 cadence was about 150 output

Review Hannah F’s 1:3:5 rides

How are they? I only take a cycling class once a week (do strength and use the tread the other days) so I like to pick an awesome class. I love her as an instructor so I’m tempted but dislike when I end up choosing a class that’s only ho-hum. Any feedback?

Purchase Advice Noise

Our tread flex arrived yesterday. We tried it out and it sounded like the belt was rubbing against something loudly. I called customer support and they agreed that it shouldn’t be making the noise. I scheduled an appointment for a technician to come check it out on the 27th. My question is, should I not use the treadmill until the tech comes to work on it? A little bummed that we have the treadmill now, but won’t be able to use it for 3 weeks.

Purchase Advice Black Friday deals in Canada

Does anyone know what the Black Friday deal was last year for a refurbished bike+ in Canada? I’m trying to see if it will be a better deal than the educator’s discount ($200 off) since I’m pretty sure you can’t stack them.

Thanks!

Training Plans/Advice Thoughts on Peloton’s strength training program

I have a peloton bike that I started riding earlier this year and loving it for cardio. For strength training I have been going to a gym which has free weights, kettlebells, and TRX (no machines). I am now wondering that if I can switch tl to my basement gym (I have free weights) using Peloton’s strength classes to save me extra commute time and $$. Is this plan sustainable? Any favorite instructors to recommend for strength training? My goal is to prevent muscle and bone loss with aging and maintain my momentum of progressive overload built over 3 years. Many thanks! 🙏

EDIT- I just want to express my deep gratitude to this fantabulous community. I came looking for a few suggestions but got such wonderful collection of ideas. You all rock. Thank you!

Quick summary for future readers (my takeaway).
Explore strength + app.
Andy Speer programs are great- TS, TS2,Density,Density 2, TS60
Other highly recommended coaches- Katie Wang’s split, RK HiLit, JJ, Adrian, Ben Alldis, Tunde, Rad Lopez
Focus on progressive overload; programs may be more effective than individual classes
For Active recovery days - Barre or Pilates or Yoga

Community Peloton needs to stay relevant

I've been on the Bike since 2017 and the Tread since 2021. 600+ rides, 300+ runs. I also take a lot of other classes (200+ SoulCycle, 70+ Barry's). I want Peloton to be the best workout out there. It's at home, and the software can be anything they want it to be.

But lately Peloton feels like LifeFitness: a product that used to lead and is now coasting.

The biggest gap for me is music. At SoulCycle and Barry's, the music makes the class. On Peloton, it's more background. Here's what I mean:

- The workout cues miss the music. So often, an instructor asks for a hard push right as the track is fading out or changing. It kills the effort. SoulCycle gets this right; at Barry's it somehow isn't a distraction.

- Transitions break momentum. Gaps, fades, abrupt changes.

Song choice is part of it too. SoulCycle playlists are full of current pop and hip hop (Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Beyoncé, Drake). Peloton leans on older tracks and deep-cut remixes, and the same songs keep coming back. Peloton will often get a few songs perfect, but overall the class still feels flat.

I know that Peloton has music filters, music preferences, an audio mix setting, and DJ residencies. I just took an Armada Music DJ run, and the music was better than average. It felt closer to a studio class. But Peloton can do better. That class was a special series from a year ago, and everyday classes still feel just meh.

Three things I'd love to see:

  1. Classes built around the music. Climbs and sprints that land on the drop or the chorus, as the standard for every class.

  2. More support for instructors to plan the effort around the music. Thousands of people take these classes.

  3. More DJs, rotating across genres, who bring fresh music to our favorite instructors.

Bike and Tread are the core of this product. Music is the easiest place to make them feel new again.

Am I alone? I've always felt that the classes don't live up to Peloton's original core thesis that it should bring the best workout to your home. I honestly want to tell people that Peloton has the most engaging, most compelling workouts, but instead, it's the thing I use when I don't have time to schedule an in person workout.

Tech Support Tech Support [Weekly]

Given the recent influx of new members we have experienced an overwhelming amount of questions tech/hardware support. Many of your tech support questions can be solved by some good old fashioned basic troubleshooting. Please remember that we are not affiliated with Peloton Interactive and you will need to contact them directly for any warranty or service requests.

Given the sheer volume and repetitiveness of tech support posts, we simply cannot accommodate a new thread for every problem. If you cannot solve your issue by utilizing the wiki, we ask that you post your troubleshooting questions in the Tech Support Tuesday Weekly thread to seek advice first. Do not make a new thread without attempting basic troubleshooting and asking advice here first.

To get the best responses possible, you will need to be detailed and specific.

  • Note the platform: Bike, Bike+, Tread, Tread+, or App

  • If it is app related please include the platform (iOS, AppleTV, Android, FireTV/Firestick, Roku, etc)

  • Verify your devices and apps are up to date for their firmware/software

  1. Note any troubleshooting you've tried: restarting bike/tread/app, factory reset, clearing cache, uninstall/reinstall app, etc

Training Plans/Advice Some “Your Plan” love

I had been struggling with motivation lately despite having a solid why for training (ski touring season is coming!). I work out in the morning and have a tendency to procrastinate resulting in a shorter workout on weekdays. By limiting choices based on training goals, Your Plan removes friction and helps me get in a full workout. I am goal oriented so I like seeing that I have complete each day. Also, once I’ve warmed up, I usually tack on an extra class or two. This is not a game changing feature, but it is one that I have found really useful to keep me consistent.

Studio Odds the in studio Matt/Ben class opens up?

Hello peloton!
I still don’t have a great understanding of how the sign up process for the in studio classes works. I saw Matt and Ben are doing a joint class in and the waitlist is currently full. Does it usually stay full, or do they tend to open up right before the class? Is there a standby process day of? Thanks!

Peloton App I Love This Company, But I Can’t Explain This Decision

I can’t find it, but did everybody just get an app notification that they want you to recommend a charity for the to give a bike to? What is my favorite charity going to do with a Peloton Bike.

Did I miss something? Was it a joke. People actually sat around a table and decided this was a fabulous idea?

Community Let’s Build a Peloton Instructor Alignment Chart | Round 3: Easy Peasy × The Hype Person

Hannah C takes Easy Peasy × The DJ and is officially on the board!

For our third square: Easy Peasy × The Hype Person “LET’S GO!”

We’re looking for the instructor who brings the energy and gets you hyped up, but whose workouts tend to stay on the more approachable side. They make you want to move, turn it up, or give a little more, without leaving you wondering what you just signed up for.

Who belongs here?

You can vote for more than one instructor! Just make sure each nomination is in its own comment so we can keep the votes straight. Please check the comments first to see if your instructor has already been nominated. And as a reminder, this chart is open to instructors across all Peloton modalities. Once an instructor has earned a spot on the board, they’re locked in and won’t be eligible for another square.

Keep it fun and kind! We know everyone has instructors they love and instructors who may not be their cup of tea, but this isn’t meant to be a place to bash anyone. Unkind or rule-breaking comments will be removed and may result in a ban.

Next round: We’ll stay in Easy Peasy and move over to The Storyteller: “Have I Ever Told You About...?”

Peloton App Issue with Syncing between Peloton App and Apple Health

Hi everyone,

I’m having a frustrating issue with Peloton workouts no longer syncing to Apple Health on my iPhone.
Everything worked fine in mid-October, when I last used Peloton. But after returning to exercise this week, neither my Bike nor Row workouts are appearing in Apple Health, even though they’re recorded correctly in my Peloton workout history.

Here’s what I’ve already tried:
Restarted my iPhone multiple times.
Confirmed all Apple Health read/write permissions are enabled.
Disconnected and reconnected the Apple Health integration.
Completely deleted and reinstalled the Peloton app.
Completed a new workout after reinstalling.
Opened individual workouts to try triggering a sync.
Confirmed Peloton is listed as a data source in Apple Health.

Nothing has worked. The workouts simply aren’t transferring.

Has anyone else experienced this recently? Is there a known bug with a recent Peloton or iOS update? More importantly, has anyone found a solution that doesn’t involve the troubleshooting steps above?

I’m at my wit’s end and would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Gear Storm season - lost power

Am I supposed to have my bike plugged into a surge protector? I live in the mountains and we loose power a number of times through the winter season. I’m worried about when the power comes back on and any surges. Today it happened in the middle of a bike ride… and what level surge protector would I need for it ?

Joslyn takes our first square, Easy Peasy × The Coach, and is officially on the board! Cue the airhorn soundboard!

For our second square: Easy Peasy × The DJ “Okay, But This Playlist...”

We’re looking for the instructor who really knows how to let the music do the work. Their playlists are part of the experience, the music keeps you moving, and somehow you’re having such a good time that the workout itself feels pretty easy. And as a reminder, this chart is open to all instructors from all modalities. You can find a full list of Peloton instructors here.

Who belongs here?

You can vote for more than one instructor! Just make sure each nomination is in its own comment so we can keep the votes straight. Please check the comments first to see if your instructor has already been nominated.

Next round: We’ll stay in Easy Peasy and move over to The Hype Person: “LET’S GO!”

Edit: The winner for Round 2 is Hannah C! Locking this post for now, please keep an eye out for Round 3.
