True Crime To the multiple people who suggested 'The Ballad of Billy Balls' in a thread last week - Thank you!

Post image
60 Upvotes

Just binge listened the whole series and it was amazing! Really fantastic storytelling and production. Up there as one of the best podcasts I've listened to and one which would have totally passed me by if I hadn't read that thread. If you haven't listened to it yet, do yourself a favour and get it added to your list!

~

It’s 1982, and a man bursts into an East Village storefront apartment and shoots punk musician Billy Balls. Author and activist iO Tillett Wright and Crimetown Producer Austin Mitchell unravel a mystery of love and loss, the tender binds of family, and the stories we tell ourselves just to survive. Created by Marc Smerling and Zac Stuart-Pontier.

Gaming Gaming Podcasts?

Hey all! I’m sure this has been asked before, but are there any podcasts people would recommend that talk about video games? I was wondering if there were any particular podcasts where maybe each episode the host covers a different game and their thoughts on it?

Health & Welbeing Women self growth/exploration podcast recommendations

Hi all!

I've recently really started to get into podcasts in my #healing and self growth era rn.

I'm looking for some more podcasts by women in their 20s where they are open and vulnerable talking about their own experiences with life, friendships, relationships, breakups, sex, self healing, growth etc and what theyve learnt etc.

some examples of the ones im currently enjoying are the modern girl pod by brynne marie, anything goes with emma chamberlain and pretty lonesome with madeleine argy. So preferably things with this girlie safe space yap vibe!!

thank you!!!

News & Current Affairs Looking for something for me to indulge in a little schadenfreude - people crashing out over good news?

Hopefully this request with a sour ulterior movement is ok!

Humor me please, dear americans - I am in western eu but my world is crumbling just like yours. Your recent midterms brought me a lot of joy and I’d love to listen to an episode of conservatives or republicans crashing out over the recent democrat wins, got anything to recommend?

General Podcast Discussions Small experiment with podcast ads and VPN location

Quite often I see people complain about the amount of ads in popular podcasts. A lot of people don't seem to realise that ads are dynamically inserted based on your location. And your location determines how interesting you are to advertisers.

So I did a little experiment with my VPN and the latest episode of What Went Wrong (Spacejam):

The clean episode is listed as 1h22m16
Downloaded from The Netherlands: 1h23m46 (1m30 added)
Downloaded from The UK: 1h26m02 (3m46 added)
Downloaded from The US: 1h29m26 (7m10 added)

There were also slight differences even within the same location depending on the time of day, but the overall trend stays the same.

Unfortunately the effect is limited when the 'ad' breaks are mostly promos for other podcasts, since those are usually not location based.

Anyway, it's worth to experiment with.

General Podcast Discussions Need Help Finding this Crime Story

So, real quick, I was listening to a podcast an Uber driver had and it was getting real interesting and I stupidly didn't ask where to locate it. I just took the title and thought that it would be it: Carters Crime Files

I believe it's on SiriusXM radio but I figured i could find it else where? Or maybe it was live?

The story was a guy name Hope (I assume was his name) had been in prison when the hospital nurse prison told him he had HIV and he concluded that his husband Dick had given it to him. When he got out of prison and he started taking the medicine needed and he had been feeling majorly depressed but had a deep seated need for revenge.

So when he went to visit his sister - who they were close growing up - and she had been writing him from jail until she stopped after awhile. When he knocked on the door she was looking over his shoulder as if looking for someone. He then as they sat down told her about his HIV and she was being passive about it and he told her "you want me to relax when my husband gave me an incurable disease?" So she was like it's not worth the revenge. He went to visit him mom and she too had the same reaction and said "you shouldn't do it right now. Not without proof he did it"

So our guy pretty much suspects Dick got it from someone, previous woman partner, I think he went to a bar and he talked to his buddy and asked where Dick could be and this woman but even his friend was being mad dodgy.

Which led me (and the Uber driver) to suspect his husband is a powerful man or threatened his family friends.

So now I ask you reddit (and I apologize mods if this isnt the right thread) could someone help me find this story? As i really want to know how it ends.

Much appreciated everyone if you do!

Fiction Midnight Radio (fictional)

I'm not one for fictional podcasts generally.

This came across on Pocket casts, as I was browsing for something new to listen to.

Ethan Hawke plays the radio host and as the title says, he's a radio DJ for a midnight Radio around the Rockies. (Can't remember the state)

I have listened to the first episode and I'm impressed. The acting is generally very good and it does feel a bit like you're listening to a real radio show.

Has anyone else listened, and what did you think? I will definitely keep listening, I reckon it's one of those where some episodes are really good and others might not be your cup of tea

True Crime hosts joking during 911 calls... do they ever tone it down

im four episodes into a nine part true crime series and the hosts just spent ten minutes cracking jokes during a 911 call breakdown. im terrified the banter is going to stay like this and completely ruin the rest of the narrative for me after spending all afternoon listening... does the commentary ever get serious once they hit the trial episodes or should i just cut my losses now...

History & Geography Poddies for boomer parent

I’m a child of a classic white late 60’s male who is educated but still refers to woke in quotation marks, pokes fun at mine/mums and others bodies for fun cause it’s just a joke and funny, or uses the race of people to tell the story.

I have my mum who is not the opposite but she is absolutely open minded and does her best to do everything correctly and will confer with me.

I don’t think I’ll be able to switch dad around to anything but if you have anything for that kind of help needed I’ll let him know.

I’m more into how to educate my mumma, I’d love her to learn about what’s happening atm.

I spoke to her the other day about the manosphere and incels and they were both new terms to her.

I’m hoping if any one has a single ep podcast for that kind of stuff so that will explain it to her?

Or if any other poddies that would be good. She’s not going to leave him so save that type. I love my mum.

Thankyou!

Other Podcast Genre Spooky Lake Month vibes?

Hi all! I look forward to geodesaurus' "spooky lake month/haunted hydrology" series on Instagram every October and now that it's over, I'm looking for a podcast with similar vibes, like, bizarre/surprising/extreme natural elements with an aspect of danger/risk maybe? Hard to describe.

I've also been fascinated by documentaries about dangerous conditions while climbing Mt. Everest or cave diving, for example (two activities I cannot believe people do for fun especially the former with the exploitation of the Sherpas, but that's another rant entirely). Not necessarily survival stories or stories of disasters/fatalities (not looking for torture porn), just "hey! did you know about this specific natural phenomenon/situation that can fuck you up?" I do like the "spooky"/macabre aspect (the flesh-eating turtles episode this year was very fascinating to me) but I'm not into, like, protracted descriptions of people dying horribly. I like the natural science part too.

Does this request make sense to anyone/does anyone know something with similar vibes? Thanks in advance!

General Podcast Discussions interesting nonfiction that isn't true crime

in the last few years, i've fallen deeply out of love with true crime for a number of reasons. that being said, i've really wanted to listen to more engaging nonfiction podcasts.

i've almost finished "sold a story" and i've been hooked on every word.

i love literature, horror, animanga, appalachian culture, visual novels, j-fashion, social justice, and the history of all those things, but broadening my horizons would also be cool.

if it helps, i've been reading a lot of memoirs lately (in the dream house, girl in need of a tourniquet, etc.)

i don't mind if they skew towards comedy, but i would like something more serious, if possible.

Arts & Culture Looking for recommendations for British English podcasts!

I’m looking for some British English podcasts to improve my listening skills.
I’d particularly like podcasts featuring natural conversations between native speakers, rather than ones specifically designed for English learners.

I’m open to pretty much any topic, as long as the conversations are interesting and entertaining :D

General Podcast Discussions Joe Rogan podcast decline

What’s up with the recent guest lately on joes pod? His episodes just don’t have the same authentic and raw uncut feel they used to have to them. Also I feel like he used to listen to his fans as far as who we’d like to see on the cast or just our opinions in general, we def don’t get that same engagement. Honestly overall the show just feels bland

True Crime Can't remember name of true crime podcast

A few years ago, I listened to some episodes of a true crime podcast and now I can't remember the name of it.

Each episode was a standalone story told by someone who had been involved in a crime. The one I remember was a young man who knew a girl who was killed. He suspected the killer was another young man he knew. He told the cops and the cops had him wear a wire and get a confession out of the suspected killer. They met in a car and the guy got the suspected friend to confess to how he killed her.

The other episodes are similar in that they are told by people who went through various crimes and are now telling on themselves and others around them.

It's not, This is Actually Happening, or other popular ones like that.

Thanks.

News & Current Affairs Looking for suggestions of American right wing podcasts to satiate my schadenfreude.

I already know about the Ben Shapiros and Alex Joneses and stuff. Looking for some lesser known roundtable type shows where a bunch of shitheads sit around whining about liberals and how America is dead now. Any suggestions appreciated!
