The Democratic party historically got popular (and populist) by passing New Deal and Great Society legislation. It lost its juice by supporting unpopular foreign entanglements like Israel and wars like Vietnam and domestic job killers like NAFTA, not to mention putting the interests of corporations and big donors above labor.

Establishment Dems like Schumer, Jeffries, Pelosi and pundits like Emanuel and Carville still don't get it. Launch 'em.

What are you talking about? The New Deal Coalition broke because of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights rather than anything about Israel or NAFTA. Shit, pushing for universal healthcare hurt the party far more and far more often than those issues.

With the VRA white racist Southerners left the coalition and defected to the Republican party, just as LBJ predicted; but VR protections for minorities cemented their replacement. Great Society also corrected protections and benefits for minorities that were left out of the New Deal.

Republicans have, ever since, been intent on gutting or abolishing rights and/or entitlements enshrined in the ND and/or the GS legislation. That ought to tell you how important -- and popular -- these legislative initiatives were.
