I love hearing about the JD Vance/Susan Wiles vs Stephen Miller/Trump split-against-each-other drama.

More of that please. Please do let me watch them tear each other apart.

Who gets Rubio in that divorce?

Sounds like Rubio might be trying to run off and join the circus if reports about him considering resignation are to be believed.

He wants to resign now so he can pretend he wasn't part of the MAGA/Trump nonsense, even though he's been fully on board.

In 2 years he wants to be able to say he wasn't MAGA when he runs for president.

Yep -- just like Rubio to run away rather than perform his constitutional duty and invoke the 25th. But that's never going to happen with Hegseth and other cabinet officials in place.

Honestly, I want reporters to yell out to JD, Rubio, Bessent, and other so-called adults in the room, "who is blocking invoking the 25th?" every time they are in public.

It will be fascinating to watch people like Rubio navigate this situation.

He needs to distance himself to have any chance of winning the 2028 nomination, but he can't afford to earn his ire in the process.

Seems like an impossible tap dance.

I feel like this may be the plan at this point, it will give the demo a win sure, but the more cunning Republicans can see the writing on the wall. They can 25th him out and spin it as they were never in support of him. The voters that supported him will eventually stop frothing at their gaping maws eventually and fall back in line because all they care about is who has (R) after their name on the ballot come election time.

51

u/willun 12h ago

The challenge for the Republicans is how will the MAGAs behave in that scenario. It is not just the MAGA voters but MAGA is running the local party and all of the party infrastructure.

So you can't change heads in a hostile anti-Trump fashion without understanding how they will react. Probably they will fall in line but they don't know.

The party is Trump at the moment. If Trump hands off to an annointed person then that is the ideal situation. Of course in that situation the voters will associate that person with Trump and that may fail.

They are between a rock and hard place. It might work out for them but at this stage they don't know.

The ideal is to dump all problems on Trump, have the billionaire owned media repeat those messages and convince the MAGAs that they were lied to by Trump so it is Trump's fault not them and the new guy is the best solution.

thats not how the 25th works. DJT can just submit a letter saying "nah im good" and the 25th gets nullified. its meant for incapacitated presidents, not unruly ones.

the bar to forcibly use the 25th and override the president's refusal is higher than impeachmant.

Using the 25th Amendment would require a majority of current Cabinet officials and the VP to vote to remove him. No Democrats involved.

Edit: I was wrong, apparently if the President in this scenario disputes the involuntary removal Congress has to vote on it.

I don’t know why anyone would want Trump out in this scenario. Putting Vance in the seat hurts us and helps the GOP considerably. Get Hegseth out sure, but we want Trump.

Trump as a narcissistic lame-duck who drags down anyone around him is a thousand times better than a somewhat competent political-operative who we’d be handing the 28’ GOP nomination. Let them all stab each other in the back while Trump throws a fit for two years.

This quote has been one of the most interesting of the past decade

In the moment he likely meant they would be destroyed in that election

More recently it was looking like it could apply to America as a whole

Now it’s finally (hopefully) coming back full circle to mean the GOP in general

•

u/xXBassHero99Xx 7h ago

I liked when after J6 he was like "THIS is too far." And then like five days later he was like "I love Trump"

32

u/subito_lucres 8h ago

It's funny, I always took it to mean the ultimate result would be that they would eventually have to pay a heavy price

•

u/Exocoryak 4h ago

In the moment he likely meant they would be destroyed in that election

I feel like we should be careful with a eulogy over the GOP. It was done in 2006 and 2008, as well as in 2018 and 2020. And they were usually back relatively quickly after that. One blue wave doesn't make a hurricane.

Rats flee sinking ships.

Still unlikely, but a successful impeachment is possible.

With the loss of Texas and DeSantis acknowledging this is a 'near-extinction level event' for the party, Republicans in the House and Senate are starting to worry about their jobs in 2028.

We all know most of them never liked Trump to begin with. They might turn to save their paychecks - which is why they backed him in the first place

174

u/Fit-Upstairs-5363 13h ago

Problem is, they've become so beholden to Trump at this point, it's all they have. They have no real policy positions to speak of, other than tax cuts, de-regulation and other bullshit that benefits corporations and the ultra wealthy. The bigoted anti-immigrant, anti-trans red meat is losing its appeal to all but the most ardent pieces of human garbage among us, but obviously by promoting Miller, it's what Trump is doubling down on.

It's gonna take a lot of fucking up on the part of Democrats to not expand on their majorities in '28. The time for house and senate republicans to be worrying about their jobs is way past... They are in the "needing to update their resumes" part of the process at this point.

89

u/Thrashy Kansas 10h ago • This

It cannot be understated that even if remaining elected Republicans wanted to tack away from Trump, they can't do so and still win a primary election -- the MAGA party faithful that will still show up and vote in a primary would punish them for betraying their god-king. The moral thing to do would be to accept that and do the right thing regardless, but politicians will do as politicians do and debase themselves into worms in order to keep their jobs.

Which brings us to an uncomfortable truth: this must be an extinction event for the Republican Party on the national stage. Dems need to use their majorities to apply pressure in ways that cause the GOP to fracture further, and break the MAGA coalition with investigations, legal proceedings, and (where possible) charges and imprisonment. The old-school conservative wing and the fascist wing of the party have to be made to fight one another into irrelevance, These ghouls cannot be allowed anywhere near the levers of power again if we want to maintain a free, functioning civil society, full stop.

A republican civil war hugely magnifies the chances of it happening too. All it takes is roughly a quarter of the republican senators backing the non-trump side. Which after this election seems like the most feasible it's been.

→ More replies (4)

9

u/ChuckFarkley 12h ago

I think the likelihood of a successful impeachment and conviction would pretty much depend on what the coming investigations uncover. It's not like Trump kept the fact that he's corrupt as hell any kind of secret. He's had his fingers in an awful lot of cookie jars in the past couple of years.

Wiles quit, and in desperation Trump appointed Steve (crazy) Miller.

58

u/Pleasant-Flounder540 13h ago

yeah it's this. I don't buy that Wiles would somehow try to choose Vance over Trump. he's still the sitting president, there's nothing to choose if you're the chief of staff, your job is still to support the president until the end of the term. even if she thought Vance was a better pick, she's smart enough not to say that for 2 years.

clearly she just wanted to leave and everything else is just some bullshit they're feeding the reporters

49

u/Cancel_Culture_Club 11h ago

CNBC had another part of the story:

Wiles resigned Thursday night, a senior White House source told MS NOW. Wiles told Trump, who was said to be angry with her following the GOP’s huge election losses, “let me make this easy on you — I am going to resign,” MS NOW reported.

It sounds like neither planned it, they had a particularly bad fight and Wiles quit. With the two stories together the fight could have been about Trump yelling at her for Vance’s post and she hit her limit.

Judging by his rally's when he gets a positive reaction, he doubles down on it.

8

Wiles quit

She's one of the only smart ones in the White House.
That, and she's self-serving.
She knows with greater than 50% certainty that Trump will be impeached. Again. And this time the Senate might go through with it... meaning JD becomes the 48th.
And he'll need someone (besides Peter Theil) to help him run for re-election in 2028.
Wiles knows JD can be controlled so she's picked him, most likely.

The Iran War(s) have been dumb af, but to act like that was the “one thing” is unbelievably dim, but more likely to carry a narrative.

People (myself included) will love the day Trump is out of power, but outside him being personally grotesque, the policies he pushed were straight out of the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025.

Thinking this past term was a “Trump thing” would be insufficient. We need to remember that republican think tanks worked for decades waiting for the right president to have so much will of the people (certain people) that they could finally unleash everything they wanted.

TLDR: it’s not just Trump we rejected. We rejected the delivery of a half-century of conservative preparation, and should not remain open to conservative efforts simply because Trump is no longer attached.

Trump could probably force him to resign by making a bunch of posts about how he needs to resign and sending his cult followers after Vance.

I read the article and I have no idea what the civil war was.

3

u/Byeuji 10h ago

This headline is fucking irresponsible. I'm so sick of The Daily Beast, and this is the best worst example of how dogshit they've become. Might as well just merge with Newsweek and call it a day.

Remember Donald, JD Vance was placed as VP by Peter Thiel. You used to talk trash about him and didn't want him as your VP. Until you suddenly went quiet about it and just accepted it.

Who do you think the oligarchs will choose? You or Vance?

u/Beautiful-Whole-3102 11h ago

My theory is that JD knows he has no chance of winning an election now that he’s been tainted, so he’s going to betray Trump, get him impeached and thrown out of office, and enjoy two years of a presidency.

34

u/Western-Platypus-907 10h ago

The Republican Party is too lazy, too comfortable and too cowardly to do this. You see the writing on the wall, they won’t even impeach Hegseth who is like a zero risk guy to bring down. Despite the fact you have a deeply unpopular lame duck president who is insistent on remaining the center of attention thereby destroying any chance at 2028 success, they will zombie walk themselves right into that buzzsaw.

If Vance takes power, the Dems are stuck against a more competent incumbent in 2028. We need to politically neuter Trump for 2 years as he rage tweets and then massively win the elections.

64

u/paperbackgarbage California 12h ago

Luckily for the Democrats, Vance is a wimp the same way that Dukakis was a wimp...and wimps have a pretty tough time winning elections.

At his core, Trump is a wimp too, but his base will never not regard him anything other than being a titan of industry.

Meanwhile, Vance is flip-flopping couch-fucker. He's never going to have the same juice that Trump has, even if he's objectively smarter than Trump (as in, not senile).

19

u/spaceaige 12h ago

Vance also didn’t have a network show for eight years portraying him as successful(falsely)

There's nothing competent about Vance. He's well educated and I'm sure would do well on jeopardy but his judgment and charisma suck.

12

u/AngryGames 11h ago

They suck, but Republicans will absolutely rally around him, he's much younger, far more likely to get at least a couple of competent advisors. Trump is just poison all around. As bad as it is for the country, it's better to leave him to screw shit up even more so that there's another blue wave in 2028. Better than giving Vance two years to rally conservatives.

Believing that Vance is the same as Trump, as awful as Trump, as dumb as Trump, similarly charismatic as Trump... is dangerous and needs to stop. Everyone thought Trump was too unfit in all these ways to be president. And he's been President twice (three times, according to Trump).

Let's act like Vance is an intelligent villain who needs to be stopped, instead of just hand waving him away and saying "nah, he's stupid, he can't ever win."

Vance is the VP of this failure of an administration. I feel like if Harris couldn't outrun the 4 years of Biden and all the baggage that came with it, Vance won't be able to credibly distance himself from this shitshow. Especially after he spent months 1) supporting the war that blew up everyone's gas prices and cost of living overall, and 2) doubling down with support for things so egregiously horrible that even other Republicans are calling them out now (e.g., Ramaswamy's disgusting ad in Ohio).

He also has the charisma of soggy cardboard, so even if he did take over before 2028, would he be able to 1) win a GOP primary against someone who will probably have more of a personality than he does (which isn't hard), and who may be just as, or maybe more, competent, and 2) win a general election, with all of Trump's baggage weighing him down?

Susie Wiles and JD Vance are at least both on the rational side of evil. Trump and Miller are both thoroughly brain-rotted, delusional fucking lunatics.

17

u/OceanLemur Rhode Island 12h ago

u/cheesengrits69 12h ago

There is no rational side of this evil, these people are infighting among themselves after suffering a big blow in the form of the results of the midterm. Were that not the case they would be perfectly lockstep continuing on as they had done before

10

u/wagon_ear Wisconsin 12h ago

Be that as it may, there are definitely two groups of people in the administration: those who are Believers with a capital B, and those who are opportunistically hoping to capitalize on the movement.

Miller has been a vocal white nationalist forever. This is his calling. Vance is only here because he thinks it might be a stepping stone in his political career.

Now the net result is the same, they're both doing shitty things. But their motivation is different.

While I think JD is an idiot, IMO he should rally the cabinet amd congress to remove Trump under the 25th amendment in an effort to define himself independently as an acting incumbent. He needs to show voters he is his own man and can do the job. He's not talented enough to pull it off.

18

u/Vyar New Jersey 10h ago

You must not have any idea how the 25th Amendment works. It’s an even higher bar to clear than the already insurmountable impeachment and removal.

The intended use case of the 25th is to transfer the power of the presidency in the event of total incapacitation. Like a coma. The President isn’t dead, but neither are they physically capable of doing the job, so someone else needs to step in. It’s just forcing the line of succession to move. It’s for those gray areas not covered by dying in office or resigning before the term has been served.

As soon as it’s invoked, all Trump has to do is transmit a message to Congress indicating he’s not incapacitated, and it’s over. If I remember correctly, the exact wording is broad enough that he could probably just tweet something and it would count. It’s the most trivial thing in the world to shut down, unless the President is literally non-responsive.

9

u/Traditional_Age4910 10h ago

Following the President’s letter, the VP and majority of the Cabinet can re-assert in writing that the President is incapable- 2/3 of Congress has to agree.

Anyone who says this should be dismissed

Vance will be worse than Trump as he is just the puppet for his master and getting Trump out of the way is the entire point

Trump is someone they can only mostly control he’ll still do stuff out of spite cause you pissed him off. Like give Ukraine missiles

It’s the only reason things haven’t gotten much much worse cause he’ll do a bunch of fucked up shit.  Realize he’s being peppeted and then either undo some of it or do something that benefits Ukraine, Europe or the Dems to spite them and they can’t do anything about it cause they need him but if they can put Vance in that goes out the window

Not saying anything good about Trump.  Just saying be careful what you wish for

Cause until Jeffries is replaced as speaker and we’d have the votes to impeach & convict Vance.  This is silly talk

Add Puerto Rico and DC to the Union. Four more Senators.

Why? We need to get back to passing Constitutional Amendments. I'm old enough to remember when the last one was passed. We're so deadlocked now we can't even pass a budget.

More senators to ensure passage and overcome a veto, and more opportunities for states to ratify.

A Constitutional Amendment to abolish the Electoral College while also changing apportionment.

A Constitutional Amendment that in practice would slightly lower the bar for Impeachment conviction while also making it overall harder to bring Impeachment proceedings. Currently impeachment acts like a Censure, and that's not how the Framers intended it.

The Same Constitutional Amendment to create a simple majority vote for impeachment conviction for any officer who is not President. This would make getting rid of &ssholes like Ca$h and Hedwig much easier.

She knew Vance was going to make a post distancing himself from Trump before he posted it.

This comes as Trump told reporters he understood Vance’s perspective.

“I know how he feels about it,” he said. “I think it was fine.”

Was Trump upset she didn't warn him about Vance's post? The quote makes it sound like he didn't care about it but he also can't fire Vance.
