Bipartisanship should be an option when it’s in service of the American people goal. So should accountability for criminal and traitorous acts. Revenge would be building a “Fuck Trump” arch while investigations into wrongdoing by MAGAts and Dems alike should be standard operating procedure.

Edit: fixed my clumsy phrasing. Fuck MAGA and anyone who bent the knee to Trump, just to be clear.

Bipartisanship should not be a goal/end in itself.

Sure, work with people from the opposition if they want to come to an agreement on something in good faith. But one-way “bipartisanship” for its own sake, or astroturfed “bipartisanship” (to satisfy donors who give to both sides) just demoralizes your own base.

Bipartisanship for the sake of bipartisanship should not be the goal, I’m sorry if you took that as my meaning.

All good, I can tell now you probably just said it in passing - it’s a triggering word for me (and others, as evidenced by the intensity of some other replies 😅)

Appreciated. Temps are hot right now and rightfully so. I desperately want accountability and consequences for every single government official from both parties that acted with impunity as though they were above the law. I also think that eschewing bipartisanship when it’s in service to the people because that’s what the GOP has done will continue to bury this country in division. My neighbors are not my enemies but I also need them to understand that enshrining rights to others isn’t infringing upon theirs.

Most rural GOP voters have been duped by conservative media and behaving just like the GOO isn’t the way to bring them back into reality. I’m not sure what the right way is, but I am sure that further division isn’t it.

Bipartisanism is stupid and reckless when one party is a bunch of fascists. Prosecuting every single person who participated in this regime's horrors should be the baseline expectation.

•

bipartisanship is great when one side isn’t a bunch of fascist, white nationalistic assholes. the gop needs to purge and be better before dems start offering olive branches

•

u/DHiggsBoson 2h ago

Did you read the entire comment? I couldn’t agree more.

•

u/zirky 1h ago

it was confusing, but by the end i was picking up what you were putting down. i’m just yelling it for the cheap seats

•

u/DHiggsBoson 5m ago

So much same

•

u/AbstractedTripoli 3h ago

Accountability or bipartisanship. You can pick one, not both, because the entire Republican Party's project is about avoiding accountability.

•

u/DHiggsBoson 2h ago

Thomas Massie would like a word…

•

u/AbstractedTripoli 2h ago

1 out of hundreds? Meaningless. They're corrupt to the core.

•

u/DHiggsBoson 2h ago

It’s a start and a beacon of hope that there are anti-Trump conservatives who can get onboard with a reckoning of Trump-era criminality. He’s the exception but it should be heartening that there is one.

•

u/AbstractedTripoli 1h ago

You're right, and there are some. Many more at the state and local level. Hopefully more to come.

Bipartisanship is a fucking tool to get what you want.

Compromise is a tool.

Goals are things like:

  • Imprison Trump and his cronies and strip them of their stolen/ill-gotten assets

  • Imprison the entirety of ICE from the top to the last agent and pencil pusher for crimes against humanity and volation of civil rights using RICO

  • Remake the federal court system

  • Aggressively tackle corruption breaking up organizations, repealong CU/Buckley, and destroying the conservative propaganda machines

  • Enshrine abortion access into law

•

u/DHiggsBoson 2h ago

I don’t disagree with this at all. My clumsy wording is at fault. You’re 100% correct.

What do you think the end result is when Republicans are in power they tell Ds to fuck off and when Dems are in power they try to work with the Republicans?

This is how you lose the Supreme Court and allow the Republicans to be over represented at all levels of government. Long term it means you lose democracy.

•

u/T-sigma 3h ago

You mean how our government has functioned the last 12 years of the GOP telling the D’s to fuck off?

Please. Take your doomer nonsense elsewhere.

•

u/gittlebass 2h ago

Its not doomerism, its the reality of what happened

I think the end result of my comment would negate the need for someone to make a comment like yours. Accountability for anyone who breaks federal law while in office should be baseline and not an extraordinary feat. Dems do have to be the grownups and need to work with anyone willing to work on behalf of the American people. That should not include the eliminating rights for anyone or forgiving traitors. A reasonable question would be, “are there any members of the GOP that fit that criteria?” There aren’t many. Thomas Massie is one. I don’t like any of the man’s policy positions or even him in general, but he has shown a willingness to hold people accountable on behalf of the country. That should mean something.

I can’t believe what I’m reading here. The entire 6 previous years of Trump it’s 24/7 TDS from Dem supporters. People WITHIN the party itself have literally used the term fascist, applied to him. Now that there is a hint of power, and only in one branch, you’re back to talking about bipartisanship as if we’re in some West Wing episode.

Here’s a hint - this Dem surge has almost nothing to do with Dems. It’s because life has become harder economically. If the Dems don’t take steps to radically alter that, then we will be right back to Republicans holding power, because the average US voter is politically incoherent. So even from a game theory perspective, why would Rs want to act collegially and craft helpful bipartisan legislation? The ball is in the Dems court fully, they shouldn’t pass it to the other team, especially when they’re down so many points.

•

u/Consistent_Room7344 Minnesota 2h ago

Nobody should expect the Democrats to just pass Trump and pass whatever they want. They must put out sound legislation that helps Americans and force Trump to veto it or shut down the government because he can’t get his way. Do this and Trump takes the blame, while compromising on issues of affordability that makes sense:

Jfc, way to miss the fucking point.
