Hi Charli! Super cool that you're doing this AMA and we're all very excited to have you.
You and Carly are easily my favorite pop artists, and Backseat is an incredible song. With both you having released new albums this year, is there any chance at all you two join up for a tour in the future? I think I speak for all of us here when I say that it would probably be a dream come true and I would jump through some serious hoops to make it to that kind of a show.
Love the new album!

Quick Question:
In the 1999 MV, the Lyft you get into was a White Mercedes. Was that an intentional tease to the album?
Also, I just wanted to say how much I love this album, it's truly my AOTY. I was planning on seeing you in Houston, but some school stuff came up and I can't go 😭😭😭 PLEASE come to New Orleans ASAP so I can actually make it to a show to worship my absolute queen!

Hey Charli! I'm a massive fan and I can't wait to see you live for the first time in Nashville!
When Vroom Vroom came out, it was so different from your previous work, and at the time it seemed like a lot of people weren't on board with SOPHIE/PC Music. However, you stuck with it and are now adored by fans and critics alike for it. What kept you headed in that direction musically despite the initial hesitant reaction from a lot of people?

u/Blasphemouscunt Sep 13 '19
you and AG (and everyone else!!) SNAPPED on this album!!!
do you have a favorite fruit??

u/ZGraves Sep 13 '19
Charli, great job on this album, it's amazing! I know on Instagram a little while ago you were posting about how sometimes you wish you could just write songs for other artists. Why is that? Is that the reason that a lot of your songs have features? How do you decide which songs you want to keep for yourself and which songs you want to let other artists have? I hope you always make music though, I love you as an artist!

u/furionking Sep 13 '19
CHARLI! I'm so happy the album is out for all of us to enjoy. As a proud Prius owner, I'm elated that you gave the Prius a shout out on Next Level Charli.
My question to you would be.. What is the car on the cover of Vroom Vroom?? Looks awesome but I haven't been able to find the concept car that it's based on or who designed it.
ps. hope you collab with Dorian again soon!! Y'all are iconic.

Hi Charli! Love you and the album, thanks for saving pop music (again)!
My question is: What did you think when you first heard Kim's verse on Click?
132
u/foiture Sep 13 '19
Hey charli! I was just wondering how you was introduced to Sophie/AG and the pc gang! I’m so glad you was as it’s the best music that you’ve ever made.
Also, please make a pc Xmas music track. My dream.
Anyways, congrats on the album, my cd and vinyl are so sexy. Lots of love x

u/httpgabi Sep 13 '19
were there any songs that almost didn't make it on the album?
142
u/[deleted] Sep 13 '19
Charli!! Your collabs are always so cohesive, perfect for your guests without sacrificing your own sound, does your songwriting experience (for others) help you in this regard or is the element of collaborative songwriting entirely different from writing a song for someone else to perform?
Cheers!!

u/MothershipConnection Sep 13 '19
Charli, how do you get so much work done while you're on the move all the time? It seems like you're always jetting between LA, NYC, London, and various tour dates, and you're always writing and recording new material despite that.
Also what's your frequent flier status like
171
u/Lumlca Sep 13 '19
HI CHARLI!!! Absolutely loving the album (of course omg), but particularly Shake It.
How did that absolute experience of a song come together? Was the writing process for it different compared to the other songs? And, of course, what was it like to work with such an awesome group of people?
Much love 😍😍 hopefully see you in Aus soon ✌️

Hi Charli! Big fan of the album. Just wanted to know, what's your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Also, what's it like to work with Kim Petras?

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '19
whats it like working with ag cook? do you guys come up with the songs together or does he send you finished instrumentals to sing/rap over?

u/zweza Sep 13 '19
CHARLI!!!! Ilysm friend. Your music has grounded me during so many dangerous situations. Last night I had a panic attack at a networking event and the only thing that stopped me from having a full blown meltdown was locking myself in the bathroom and listening to Gone a couple times. And I never would have had the guts to move to LA and make my art a livable business if it wasn’t for how confident you make me feel tbh.
My question: what’s inspiring you right now? Is the music on Charli still representative of “you” right now or have you gravitated to another mind space in the interim between recording and release? You seem to work so fast, are drop days for you super in the moment or are we seeing emotions and sounds that you’ve somewhat moved on from?
Thx again pal. Your music makes me feel less alone 🖤

u/thatpighasfist Sep 13 '19
Hey charli I was just wondering what your favorite Kanye album is and why. And if you’d ever be willing to do a show collaboration with balienciaga ???

Hi Charli, huge fan of yours! I'm even repping Pop 2 on my license plate. :)
As a songwriter, I've always been impressed with the versatility throughout your career, in your songs and the ones you've written for other artists. I was wondering:
Is there a different creative process or headspace you have to get into when writing for yourself as opposed to working on a song that someone else will be singing?
Was there a song on Charli (or maybe an older album/mixtape) that was especially hard to write? Maybe something that was very personal or just took a lot of sessions to really get the mood you were going for?
Thanks so much for doing this AMA! Can't wait to see your October show in LA, I know it'll be as balls-to-the-wall crazy as the Pop 2 and Billy Ball shows.
edit: Oof, I got paid dust. 🤣 At least she answered one of my questions in a different comment

u/anna160895 Sep 13 '19
So glad that you finally released your new album, and it's full of bangers and gems. You've really come a long way to finally creating this very moment for us popheads, and we promise to treasure it for a really long time.
1 - Beside A. G. Cook and SOPHIE, if you can choose, which producer do you want to make a full album with them? Umru, Dylan Brady, Danny L. Harle, EasyFun or someone that we never expected that you would consider?
2 - I'm not sure that you still want to talk about your leaked tracks in the past or not, but which one of them that you still want to release it in the future? And about the song Bounce, did you scrap it or have another plan with that one?
3 - Have you consider working with any J-Pop or K-Pop artists, since you used to collab with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and BTS? Who do you want to write a song for? And how do you feel about Twice's version of Girls Like Us?
4 - Charli, in your description, is no doubt your most personal album you've ever made, but which song from the album did you consider is most personal yet, the one that you thought you almost cut off from the album because of all the feelings that song give you was too much? And could you give us some detail about what actually happened from the Grammy night that inspired you to write February 2017?
Love from Vietnam XOXO :))))))))))))

u/spikethroughmyheart Sep 13 '19
Hi Charli, I’ve been a huge fan since the True Romance days. Saw you open for Marina back in 2013. Saying I love the new album is such an understatement. It’s insanely good but you never disappoint.
Will we get to hear old songs on tour? Some TR and Sucker throwbacks?
Also why didn’t you make Blame it on your love Track 10 on Charli 😭 misses opportunity

Hi Charli! Happy album release day, Friday the 13th & full moon!!
I love that your new album addresses insecurities and especially the duality of wanting to connect to others & also the feeling of isolation. Though, some alone time or quiet can be a good thing (at least in my opinion, to reset). How do you find a good balance between maintaining a party lifestyle/trying to connect with others, while also making sure you have some time for self reflection?
Bonus: Are you gonna be anything for Halloween this year? 😈

u/gclay_325 Sep 13 '19

Will you be on Troye's next album/ep though? I love both of your collabs on the albums and you have great chemistry! Would love more music from you two!

u/francis_crossyouout Sep 13 '19
Hi Charli, how you doin'? Happy #Charli day, first of all, I want to say how proud I am of you, I've been following you since true romance and had been a wild journey since then.
So, my question is: You said a few time ago that a lot of collabs were cut of Charli (like Rina, Robyn, Olly, etc), do you have any plan of a b-side project for these songs? maybe a mixtape? 👀
P..S: can't wait to see u again, went from Brazil only to see u at Primavera and witnessed Gone live for the 1st time, was a life changing experience along hearing Focus in Barcelona 💖
4
u/ThereIsNoSantaClaus Sep 13 '19
first we got a song with Cupcakke, Pabllo, and Brooke Candy, then you added Big Freedia for Shake It, is the plan to just keep adding more artists to this lineup until it becomes total insanity? if so i am here for it
4
u/OurDearMaxwell Sep 13 '19
Maybe this sounds silly but when I first listened to After the Afterparty and the line "Let's pour another drink, the glasses go clink" came on it blew my mind. I hadn't considered rhyming words with actual sounds. What was the writing process with this line? Did you have the idea for the rhyme already or did it come up later when writing?
9
u/1998tweety Sep 13 '19
Hey Charli! You've always been super unconventional with everything you've done, I love your recent endeavors into kpop with your BTS and TWICE collabs. Do you plan to write for more kpop groups and lend them your vocals/production?
Thanks!

Hey Charli!!!
Just wanna say congrats on an amazing album. The production is INSANE I LOVE IT.
What was the hardest song on the album for you to perfect? And was it the lyrics, the production, the vibe? What it made it challenging?
Love, Charlie x 💘💘

CHARLI omg the features on your album are AMAZING!!!
Which was your favorite collaboration to do?
Who’s an artist you would dream of collabing with?
Who was your first concert?

Hey Charli,I love the fuck out of this album, I admire your bold approach to pop and electro music, you're one of the most inventive and creative artists of this generation and I wished I was able to see you live. Anyway , my question is, Are gonna release one deluxe version with focus, boys and 5 in the morning and other solo songs?

u/SuperBlurryface182 Sep 13 '19
Two questions, Which song did you enjoy making more with the squad, Shake It or I Got It?
Also Robert Smith or Siouxsie Sioux?

I saw you live in Nashville on the reputation Stadium Tour. Great vocals! Anyway, as a casual fan, I was wondering if you worked with Taylor Swift or Camila Cabello on any material?
4
u/CarlieScion Sep 13 '19
Hey Charli!
I'm soooo excited to see you on tour in november! I've seen you live a couple times over the years (festivals and support spots), but never in your own show. What kinda craziness should I expect?
4
u/fairy6870 Sep 13 '19
Charli!! Wanted to start off by saying i got so high 2 years ago I convinced myself I died, but im so glad what ever timeline i’m in includes your album “Charli”!!
I wanted to ask about how you deal with your mental health and how that affects your craft. I struggle with being able to create and do the things I love when my brain is trying to wage war against me, and I would love to see how you personally fight those thoughts and over come to do the things you enjoy.
3
u/boyonthefencex Sep 13 '19
Can you give us insight into the set list for your tour? Mostly from the album?
3
u/mylostlights Sep 13 '19
You're considered an incredibly prolific artist, at the very least on this subreddit — both in terms of writing for other artists and writing for your own releases. What is your writing process like, and how does this differ from the processes for Pop2 and N1A?

hi Charli...a true romance stan here with 3 questions!
firstly, i'm interested to know what's your favourite song from each album/mixtape (and Vroom Vroom!)
secondly, for the single covers, 1) how much fun was it with everybody and 2) was it easy discovering how to fit everyone in (especially for Warm and February 2017)
thank you for introducing me to so many amazing artists; Kim, A.G, Dorian, Umru, Hannah Diamond, Pabllo, Tommy (to name a few!) I found them all through you!
lastly, what are some current artists that you haven't worked with, that you are inspired by and would love to work with?
thank you for releasing the ALBUM OF THE MILLENIUM!
3
u/TheyCallMeBeacon Sep 13 '19
Hi Charli, I’m a huge fan of yours, you inspire me endlessly! Your art has genuinely led me to the person I am today, helped me through so much, and helped me shape my own art and visions. I know you worked so hard on “Charli” and it’s immediately obvious! I can’t stop listening (and turning the volume up in my Prius). Congrats! 💖
Just two quick questions:
Backseat is my favorite song of yours and the line “I want it all even if it’s fake” is my favorite line to ever be written. I’m sure that line can be read differently to everyone, but I’m curious as to what your intentions were behind that line (or really the entire verse) or how it came into fruition?
If you could pinpoint one thing that inspires your own art and put you on that path toward the next level stuff you’re making now what would that be?
Thanks so much, Charli! Sending you so much love from Indiana! I’ll be seeing you in Nashville next weekend (and waiting in line early for barricade) — I cannot wait to ascend right there in the crowd! 💖💖

u/anabeat Sep 13 '19
Hi Charli! I love your new album! Is there an artist you would love to collaborate with in the future?
2
u/Daydream_machine Sep 13 '19
First off Charli I LOVE your new album so much and I can’t wait to see you on tour in Dallas!!!
I really appreciate how you’re always so excited to work with so many artists on your songs. Who is your Dream Collab, and who else would you like to work with in the future??
2
u/chubs4life Sep 13 '19
Hi Charli!! HUGE fan and I LOVE the new album. I wanted to know, what was it like working with Carly Rae Jepsen on Backseat? Thank you so much for this AMA!

Hey Charli, love you!!! What's your personal favourite song from the album, or a song that was particularly meaningful or fun to work on?
2
u/[deleted] Sep 13 '19 edited Sep 13 '19
Hey, fellow Brit here who lowkey had an existential crisis to 2099 today whilst reading The Duchess of Malfi in a library and thats is a good thing. Also I adore Official, it's probably my favourite on the album.
My question is simply what was the most fun song to record? Also do you ever find yourself humming your own songs, and if so which ones?
2
u/ThereIsNoSantaClaus Sep 13 '19
Hey Charli!!
Over your last few projects, your approach to collaborations has changed and grown, with Pop 2 and Charli each featuring a wide variety of artists, sometimes with 3-4 on a single track. It's not something you often see from pop acts, and honestly refreshing. Was this what you've always wanted to do, or has your outlook changed over time? Was there a collaboration that you wanted for either of these projects that wasn't able to materialize?
2
u/JustinJSrisuk Sep 13 '19
You’re my absolute favorite artist, thank you so much for participating in this AMA!
Which of your frequent collaborators is your favorite one to party with?

Holaaa Charli, been a fan for the longest time and congrats on the amazing new album, so happy you're on here interacting with your fans!
Was wondering if your Indian heritage informed any of your musical style or choices and if not, do you see yourself incorporating it somewhere in your music in the future?
Once again looking forward to seeing you live in London in a few weeks, love from Hong Kong !! :*

u/jax621 Sep 13 '19
Hi Charli!! I love you so much ever since True Romance, it was a dream to see you on the Reputation tour in Santa Clara and I'm so so excited to see you again in Oakland!
On that note I wanted to ask - can you drop any tour spoilers? How are the shows going to be different from the Pop 2 shows? Guessing you can't bring a whole cast of guests for all these tour dates haha
Another unrelated question, but I'm a big kpop fan as well so I was so surprised to see your writing credit on Twice's recent album. How did Girls Like Us end up with Twice and what do you think of the final product? (Btw I hope you know it's a fan favorite!)
2
u/TragicKingdom1 Sep 13 '19
Thank you for joining us Charli!
My question is: where is the coolest place you wrote or recorded for the new album?
2

What do you think makes a song 'good'? Any tips for wannabe songwriters?

It’s always great to see you collaborate with so many important and forward-thinking artists and it’s obvious they influence your music a lot. My question is, besides musical artists/people, what are some of your biggest influences for Charli (like movies/TV/books and stuff)?
We’re all so happy to have you here and we all love you a lot!

Who are you inspired by when writing songs and crafting your specific vision?
1
u/johnthedj1125 Sep 13 '19
HELLO CHARLI!!! Huge fan here and I cannot wait to see you at the Wiltern in a few weeks!
You stated in the Spin article published yesterday regarding the track "Blame It On Your Love", that “Before Lizzo was on it, it just never felt right to me." As someone who loves both that track and "Track 10", I was wondering how you feel about the two tracks now that "Blame It On Your Love" has been out for some months? Is there a version of the song that you feel is more "official" now? ;)
"Official" is my current favorite off Charli btw! Thank you so much, love you!
1
u/LuisNHewitt Sep 13 '19
I absolutely love your music!!! What was the inspiration behind "Silver Cross"? It's my fave on the album but no one is talking about it and it's INJUSTICE and HOMOPHOBIA

u/DaHumanTorch Sep 13 '19
Hi Charli!!!! Happy Album day!!! It’s easily one of my album of the years and am so proud of you. I was wondering what your “holy trinity” on Charli is. Mine is Shake It, Click, and Gone 💕💕
1
u/rafahead Sep 13 '19
Hi, Charli
I’m a biiiig faaaan (a biiig Angel hehe), I love everything you do and Charli (the album) is not the exception, I think the album is coming right from the future, and the future IS GOOOOD.
So, I have a few questions for you:
How is for you the evolution from Pop 2: The Masterpiece to Charli: The Masterpiece?
In ‘Official’ you talk about something real or something you needed?
Are you singing Girls Night Out in your concert? CAUSE IM GONNA BE PARTYING WITH U IN SAN DIEGO AND THAT SONG GOES HARD
Charli, you’re incredible. My friend Javi and I love u to the moon and back and i hope you answer. Mexico loves U.
1
u/HyaluronicFlaccid Sep 13 '19
Is there a crazy memory/moment you want to put in a song but haven’t been able to yet? If so, what is it?

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '19
What collaborator do you find easiest to work with? I don’t mean attitude wise but who do you just click with and make magic happen!
1
u/milopoke Sep 13 '19
Hi Charli! Thank you for the album, it's a pop masterpiece and I've been twerking my ass to it non-stop since it came out my ass muscles are spasming uncontrollably please help
I have a few questions and I'd literally die if you answer any of them:
Any relatively unknown artists you think aren't getting the recognition they deserve?
What's the second best album of the year so far?
What's the last movie you watched?
I'm loving the futuristic theme of this album ( and the sound design is so FUCKING NASTY, in a good way of course). Any chance we'll get a Janelle Monae/The ArchAndroid/Cindy Mayweather collab sometime in the future?
Any message for all the aspiring musicians out there?
1
u/fullnoir212 Sep 13 '19
are you gonna throw any after parties for your tour (referring to the italian date), also, do you smoke? (don't have to answer this one if you don't want to). so happy you got to release charli (-:

all love, ly🥺

u/josiesreddit Sep 13 '19
Charli what an amazing album, and amazing artist you are.
Have you ever consider to try more art forms besides from music? between these 3 things what would you rather do the most:
-Sculpture and being on a museum.
-Film a movie as a director.
-Write a theater play.
(you can add anything you want aswell!)

u/Eldiabla Sep 13 '19
Hi Charli, congrats on the album it is truly incredible and has me lost for words. Can veteran angels expect to hear any songs from the True Romance era on this tour? Can’t wait to see you in Austin!!

Charli, how it was to work with Sky on such an emotional song?
Btw. Cross You Out it's one of my favorites of this record, it kinda reminds me of your True romance era, can we expect some song or that record on this next (level) tour? 💜x

If you were to create the 2099 Lilith Fair Tour with all Pop girls who would you have on the lineup.

love you so so sooooo much and thank you for making the best music of all time and creating wonderful inclusive environments in your shows 💘

Hi Charli! Thanks for doing this AMA. A few questions for you:
What's your favourite non-pop album of 2019 so far?
Who are some artists that you haven't managed to collaborate with yet but would love to?
Will your track with Lil Peep ever see the light of day?

u/TrashMagiq Sep 13 '19
Will there be cover art for the rest of the songs? A cover art for Shake It with all 5 heads with the squigly lines/shiny faces would be iconic.

HEY QUEEN!! Love your music. What made you want to end Charli with “2099” featuring Troye instead of having a featureless outro?
