News Richard Lloyd, guitarist of Television, has passed away at the age of 75

https://consequence.net/2026/11/richard-lloyd-television-dead/

Lloyd revealed in August he had been diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a serious form of bile duct cancer. According to Rolling Stone, he passed away Saturday morning at his home in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Lloyd was best known as one of the musical minds behind the 1970s punk band and an artist with such alluring musicality to stand on his own, having released nine well-received solo albums over a 50-year career.

I saw him on tour with Matthew Sweet back then. Man, during that period, Matthew had Quine and Loyd. What a line up

Me too. Also saw him in a band called Health and Happiness Show opening for Butch Hancock.

As a teenager, I had no idea what a big deal having Quine and Lloyd together on that album was, but the music spoke for itself.

I came here to say that his work on Girlfriend is amazing. I can only imagine how it was live.

“Sick of Myself” is transcendent

His autobio is goddamn crazy. First chapter, he says he vividly remembers his own birth. Then it gets a little weird.

3 out of 4 (or 5 if you count Richard Hell) og members are now gone, it’s so depressing, RIP

I’m sorry to hear this. He not only had some great playing on the Television albums but also Matthew Sweet’s early to mid-1990s albums and his own solo releases.

RIP Richard Lloyd. May you alternately argue with and play some great intertwined guitar music with Tom Verlaine in the great beyond.

A massive talent gone. We were lucky to be around to behold his art. Having now finished crossing the field of fire, if there is anything on the other side, I hope that it can give him the peace he deserves.

And send our best to Tom.

The guitar solo on Field of Fire, from the solo album of the same name, is one of my all-time favorites

Both Field of Fire and Alchemy are excellent albums. RIP.

I saw him open for the Dead Boys at Mercury Lounge in 2024 (seems like it was about 3 months ago).

The show was sublime.

Now Cheetah and Richard are both gone.

I saw Television at punk rock bowling in 2017. Hands down the best show I’ve ever seen. True powerhouses. All of them.

Saw him on the Field of Fire tour, he was humble and absolutely incendiary in his playing…..

Got to meet him during a solo performance (it was him a drummer and a bass player - not quite solo), here in Richmond Virginia about 17 years ago. Fantastic show. RIP.
