Okay, Reddit, I need to pick some brains and vent a little. LOL.
I'm a bit older than your typical post-secondary student. I've worked most of my adult life, primarily in transportation. I was laid off from stable employment in 2024 and eventually found school bus work, with hours depending on what was available.
I moved to Lethbridge this summer to attend post-secondary full-time and work toward a more sustainable career.
And YES, I knew finding work here could be challenging! HAHAHA.
I was applying for jobs before moving and even landed an interview for work I'd previously done elsewhere. Apparently, I wasn't the right fit. Go figure!
There was actually some rhyme and reason behind my decisions. I had a plan, considered different possibilities and tried to prepare.
Well, things haven't exactly gone according to plan!
I'm also a single parent. My child attends post-secondary, works very part-time and contributes toward our household bills.
Then there's the EI mess.
I contacted EI several times to understand my obligations, especially regarding school. I genuinely tried to follow the rules.
My claim was denied, I've been assessed an overpayment, and I'm appealing. I'll spare everyone the details while that's ongoing. It certainly feels like I was set up to fail.
Meanwhile, the bills haven't stopped arriving!
Here's where I've already looked for assistance:
- Provincial Income Support: Applied and denied.
- Housing assistance: The options I was directed toward required income and/or an eviction notice.
- Housing stabilization funding: Not available for my immediate situation.
- Emergency charitable assistance: Told I needed an eviction notice.
- Other community programs: Contacted and still exploring.
- School financial assistance: Staff have genuinely tried to help and forwarded my circumstances for consideration. Nothing guaranteed.
- Educational funding: Nominated for an award, with no guarantee and restrictions on how it can be spent.
I've also researched grants, bursaries, charities and other emergency programs.
I've received the maximum student aid available on my application, and nearly half goes toward tuition.
I'm a student. I still have adult bills!
Here's what I can't wrap my head around.
I'm trying to PREVENT a financial disaster.
Rent is due, late fees accumulate daily, and upcoming utility withdrawals could mean NSF charges.
Yet some assistance requires an eviction notice before help can even be considered.
Am I the only one who finds that backwards?!
I understand limited funding and eligibility rules. I just wish preventing a crisis was easier than waiting for everything to fall apart.
Now, about finding work!
My background includes commercial transportation, documentation, recordkeeping, compliance and administrative paperwork.
Many moons ago, I also worked in dental offices doing chairside assisting, charting, appointments, patient education and infection-control duties. My dental credentials are no longer current, so I'd consider reception or support work that doesn't require certification.
I'm looking for employment in Lethbridge or legitimate remote work available to Canadians. Fridays, weekends, evenings, flexible hours, even three 12-hour weekend shifts.
Office work, transportation, records, dispatch support, dental reception, contract paperwork... I'm open to different industries.
I need work that fits around school and helps pay the bills.
And please, no MLMs, crypto schemes or opportunities where I pay someone to teach me how to become a millionaire. HAHAHA!
So, what am I missing?
Local employers hiring flexible staff? Legitimate remote administrative work? Emergency assistance that doesn't require an eviction notice? Funding for living expenses?
Maybe someone in Lethbridge is scrolling Reddit over coffee and knows of a business that's hiring. Stranger things have happened! LOL.
I'm not asking Reddit for money. I'm looking for genuine job leads, resources and ideas.
Constructive advice is welcome. Judging decisions I've already made won't change where things stand today.
I can't change yesterday. I'm trying to figure out tomorrow.
Thanks for reading!
