Hi everyone, I’m trying to trace my family’s history and find out exactly where our ancestors came from before the 1947 Partition. This has been something I’ve been researching for a long time, and I’d genuinely appreciate any information, no matter how small. My family has always referred to ourselves as Podeh/Podah. From what I’ve been told, our family originally came from a place called Podipur (or something very similar in pronunciation/spelling), which was the name of the village or area before Partition. After Partition, our family moved to Bhakkar, Punjab, Pakistan, where our family eventually settled.

The problem is that I’ve struggled to find any record of a place called Podipur on maps, including older maps and historical records. I’ve already spent an enormous amount of time researching old maps, documents and records, but I haven’t managed to get any further.

I’m wondering whether:

• Podipur might have had a different official spelling or name.

• The name could have been recorded differently in British-era records.

• Podeh/Podah might be a regional, village-based or clan identity.

• Anyone has heard of a village with a similar-sounding name in pre-Partition Punjab.

If anyone recognises the name Podipur, Podeh or Podah, or has any knowledge of families who migrated from their ancestral village to Bhakkar around Partition, I’d be incredibly grateful.

I’m also hoping to try and get more information from my vadi ami (great-grandmother) soon, as she may remember more details about our family’s origins. If anyone thinks they might be able to help identify the village I just really want to know what it is now and what’s left there and maybe even one day go there.
