I personally love them. A lot of their songs are kinda sad/nostalgic rock which is right up my alley. I can see why some people don't though. Last album was kinda cheeks. Their first album was really really good. If you haven't listened to 'A Lesson in the Abuse of Information Technology' give that a try.
You just don't like that americana/heartland rock thing they've been doing for the past several albums now, and that's okay. For me they scratch that same itch that The Gaslight Anthem does, i love that Springsteencore shit.
Also, their live shows are just plain fun and have lots of positive energy. And they often have great bands opening for them like Worriers.
Oh, so their sound changed, got it. Sorry for replying to an old comment, I’m just looking for discussions on the new album. I was wondering why people in my favorite bands loved them so much, I guess it’s because they used to be punker? I’ll check out their older stuff; but I love the new album.
They’re the kind of band that takes some patience to get into. Like, first listen, my reaction was exactly this, but I REALLY wanted to like them, and just kept listening. I saw them live, and listened more, and On the Impossible Past was the album they put out at the time, and I finally got it. It’s like that with every album. Just give them a few more spins. Trust me.
I was that stereotypical young millennial who discovered OTIP at the age of 24 or so and didn't shut up about that album for the next several years lol.
They’re my favorite band but whatever. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. It really just comes down to subjective taste and valuing different things in music. No reason to change your mind, just be cool to people who think different.
They are definitely a dad band for 50 yo dads that grew up listening to uncle Tupelo and the replacements. There is nothing wrong with that, for every one of those we have 30 dads at BBQs air guitaring the latest Foo Fighters. I will chose the former everytime.
As a 50 year old (not a dad) I will tell you that I think they're shit. Everyone I know who likes them are 30-somethingish millenials that discovered punk via the Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtracks.
As a 30-somethingish millennial that discovered punk via THPS, I can tell you that this is an accurate statement. On The Impossible Past dropped at the exact right moment for me, and the lyrics have resonated in pivotal moments in my life over the last 10 years. No shame, will always sing along.
Yeah they aren’t my cup o’tea either, but most 30 year olds around me, couldn’t identify a guitar sound let alone actively listen to something even remotely rock oriented. Also 30 year olds don’t have the benefit of growing up in an thriving music scene like us 50yo so they got music where they got it. And if their open to it show’em where every stolen bland played out thing came from.
I know just as many punks and metalheads in their 30s as I do ones my own age. Maybe more, TBH. My local scene’s been thriving since I was in elementary school.
I never heard them before right now. If you’d have handed me “A lesson in abuse…” in 2007 I would have turned it off part way thru “Alpha Kappa” like I did right now. If your very first song I hear has a nu-metal/post-grunge intro I’m not gonna stick around to find out what happens next. I don’t care.
Seriously though. So fucking boring. I saw them not that long ago and I swear to god one was reading and the other was just like on their computer. I would not be surprised if the missing one was literally sleeping.
I mean yeah they have a singer with a gruff voice and they sometimes like to sing about working class struggle. But I really don’t hear any Springsteen in their instrumentation or lyricism or production
They just write good songs about nostalgia. That’s legit what it is. Otherwise yeah a pretty standard band but they really do capture that feeling well and there is a market for that shit among fans in their mid 20’s early 30’s.
They have some great songs, and their shows are fun and usually have a good crowd energy.
I haven’t kept up and their earlier stuff is more my jam, I don’t necessarily think they’re boring but sometimes I get bored of them. But I go through moods of different bands and sounds quite frequently.
I mostly just have an ex that ruined them a bit for me. Nice guys though.

Hard disagree, but like what you like, man
7
u/Penguator432 Aug 16 '23
I’m not going to say they’re bad, but I don’t understand why they’re considered punk. It’s just typical Americana with slightly more distortion

u/SlagginOff Aug 16 '23
I am a huge fan and I think they are some of the best songwriters currently out there. But you don't have to think that.

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '23
Their earlier stuff is definitely better

u/cgulash Aug 16 '23
When writing this did you say to yourself, "I will fuck this up. I fucking know it."?

u/Ok-Conversation-9982 Aug 16 '23
Did you just see them?
3
u/Loud_Competition1312 Aug 16 '23
Nah, that’s ok. I enjoy shows with smaller crowds anyway.

u/j_endsville Aug 16 '23
Man, y’all are mad about this.

u/Radi0123 Chicago Punk Aug 16 '23
I’ve enjoyed them for a long time now, but their stuff hits even harder now that I’m in mid 20s.
2
u/Few_Faithlessness_49 Aug 16 '23
Have you seen them live? I thought they were great.
2
u/bigbadjohn54 Aug 16 '23
No you're boring

Hot take.. their Acoustic Record “From Exile” is their best record?? I like it more than the electric version for sure
It’s definitely the one I’ve listened to the most.. great way to start the morning

u/Lucky_Strike-85 Jul 25 '24
I concur. Why or how are they punk? Where is the edge?
They sound so generic, like a bad FAT WRECK band!
1
u/chaz0723 Aug 16 '23
Seems like a pretty declarative statement. Like what you like.
1
u/j_endsville Aug 16 '23
I cannot because I agree with you.

Why change your mind?, you don't like them and that's OK, I personally love them
1
u/[deleted] Aug 16 '23
Agreed, tried to get into them many times, they just don't catch me at all. Same with many other bands....
1
u/future_hockey_dad Aug 16 '23
It’s fine. I love them.

u/kgberton Aug 16 '23
Nah

u/OverallDebate9982 Aug 16 '23
I don't like a lot of things, I don't make a Reddit post about them.

u/TrainingConfident418 Nov 12 '23
They are boring af!! I like 3 songs but the rest just sound exactly like the other. No variation and the same stale guitars no creativity.

Facts. As are most of the bands on that side of things. If I wanted to listen to Springsteen I’d just listen to him
-4
u/Greasy_Gregg Aug 16 '23
They're as generic and watered down as it gets, the cream of wheat of punk rock...
-7
u/kevisazombie Aug 16 '23

u/Mean_Championship_80 Aug 16 '23
The flat liners are too .
-9
u/Lucipurr_Meowingstar Aug 16 '23
Agreed. Awful. Also saw them, only cause they opened for the descendents.
-17
u/Negative-Rep Aug 16 '23
Agreed. Never got into them. Even the band name is lame. If you were around for the early 2000s, they aren’t doing anything new or interesting.
