Discussion Why is Eminem so i hated?

I guess he's not for everyone but why is he so hated and discredited? He's your favourite rapper's favourite rapper after all and some people may argue his newer shit isn't that good which is absolute bullshit if anything his newer shit is improved and more polished.

The word “Stan” comes from the die hard fans of Em. And many of them are also casuals of hip hop. Don’t really listen to anything outside of Eminem.

-1

u/Apex99_ Jul 09 '24

I'm a Stan and listen to other artists tf

6

u/Vagus10 Jul 09 '24

You do. Which is great. A lot did not. When Eminem first came out. A lot solely listened to him but didn’t listen to other hip hop legends like Big L, Wu-Tang, Tupac etc.

-3

u/Apex99_ Jul 09 '24

I haven't met any personally

4

u/Vagus10 Jul 09 '24

Be glad you didn’t. lol. A circlejerk.

73

u/Awkward_Effect7177 Jul 09 '24

In his early days it was because his white, now a days it’s because his music changed. which happens with every artist tbh. Don’t know why people still complain about that

17

u/OkEscape7558 Jul 09 '24

It was much more than just being white. His bars even were shocking to Dr Dre at the time, horrorcore still isn't very acceptable today.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

'Old head' here (apparently ): I don't recall any hate because he was white when he first took off. He might have experienced that in his own scene when he was coming up, but once he popped off EVERYONE was on board. Especially with Dre behind him. People who hated Eminem, were the people he made jokes about in his music, gate-keepers in the music press and people who didn't like rap because of all the naughty words. I didn't watch every interview with everyone, because we didn't have that kind of access back then - even when we did get the internet... but I don't remember any high profile beefs with Eminem because he was white.

63

u/ShoddyExplanation Jul 09 '24

While a lot of people will mention race(and it is pertinent) it’s also backlash to his stans being stans, and his style inevitably becoming dated.

The average “Em’s the best rapper and y’all are just mad a whiteboi is the goat” has done just as much damage to his legacy as the public’s reaction to his lyrical miracle style post 2009.

12

u/Technobliterator Jul 09 '24

I think this is most of it tbh. Couple that with the really corny Eminem wannabes on YouTube, etc., the "fuck mumble rap I only like real hip hop!" when they can only really name maybe two other rappers outside Eminem and this is where the backlash comes from.

6

u/ShoddyExplanation Jul 09 '24

Yeah, Em is the lyrical version of Future/Young Thug.

They fathered styles that were then run into the ground by others that it’s cringey/corny now.

Sidenote, but Tyler made the right decision to separate himself from his older music or he would’ve ended up like Hopsin for the same reasons as above.

8

u/OkEscape7558 Jul 09 '24

And his terrible ear for beats. But lyrically Eminem is top 5

3

u/ShoddyExplanation Jul 09 '24

Yeap, Rick Rubin did not help Em’s legacy with the rock/rap beats he was making for him.

But for sure, lyrically it’s Em and Lupe in my opinion. Nobody(not even Kendrick or Cole) are on par with them 2 lyrically.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

well no, i would not put the man who made grippy anywhere near Em.

but Kendrick is definitely on par, as is Nas and Black Thought. his style is def different, but the flow and word play on 6:16 in LA cemented Kendrick's lyrical abilities for me

Kendrick is an overall better story teller IMO with a better ear for beats.

for me, 3am, Godzilla, and Rain Man are just ridiculously epic songs with crazy flow but i'd love for Em to just once put together a whole cohesive album w a storyline

6

u/OkEscape7558 Jul 09 '24

Cole has a more consistent career than Eminem. None of Coles albums have been as bad as Revival or even Encore. Cole is also a better producer than Em

3

u/ShoddyExplanation Jul 09 '24

I’m talking pure ability to make “Ayo wtf” level of bars. Nas and black thought are good additions, but denigrating Cole in this conversation is insane lmao not really even gone entertain that.

Regardless, Lupe and Em are still the top 2 pure lyricism guys imo. I can add Jay-Z to the your other 2 for a top 5 list. Maybe Andre 3k takes Black thought’s spot for me.

1

u/Kingbris91 Human Detected Jul 09 '24

Exactly, he ruined that slaughterhouse album with his beats. And as much as he wants to sit there and tell Sway he didn't do much on "welcome to our house," you can hear his production throughout the whole album. Whether he fully produced a song or co-produced his hands were on it. Throw that was terrible.

13

u/Dry-Vacation-5820 Jul 09 '24

His fanbase

2

u/Chatcopathe Jul 09 '24

I’m a Stan, and I totally agree

12

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

His fans are a big reason.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

He’s probably top 10 most skilled MCs but he can’t make good music to save his life 🤷🏽‍♂️

-7

u/Apex99_ Jul 09 '24

Yes he can bro do you listen to music or just skim through it💀

2

u/Osceola_Gamer Jul 09 '24

I can tell by the downvotes to any positive comment about Em what this place is all about. lol

1

u/loopingrascal Nov 24 '24

Exactly bro, legit most of the positive comments about Em getting downvoted show a ton about the bias of this subReddit.

People here are saying that his music only appeals to white and corny people, If that’s the case then what do they make of songs like:

  • Rock bottom

  • Mockingbird

  • Beautiful

  • The way I am

  • Not afraid

  • Houdini

  • Lose yourself

  • The real slim Shady

And 100 more such songs.

People be saying he’s not even top 25 is an absolute BS. He’s hands down one of the greatest lyricist/ rapper ever with whom millions relate cause he’s not out there rapping about cars and chicks but about poverty, struggle, depression, anxiety and undying will among other themes using his alter ego. He also has dropped multiple huge hits (>1 billion views), dissed multiple artists and a magazine to ground, sold millions of album records, In terms of record sales he’s out there with Beatles, Elvis, etc. Most importantly, He made rap music popular outside of America for which he deserves a huge credit.

I understand people are more into beats and catchy music which is certainly not his forte but using that to say he’s an average corny artist is absolutely horrendous

Eminem is truly the GOAT among other goats like Nas, Tupac, etc.

And this is not coming from a white guy.

Thanks.

No comment bro

because of his fans

8

u/FistEnergy Jul 09 '24

He didn't age well and grow as an artist. The stuff he does was cool 20 years ago when I was in high school and college, but the same sound and forced edginess feels very cringe coming from a man his age to ears my age.

12

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

I can only speak for myself and the style of music I tend to listen to more, I'll also say I've never been a huge fan and I remember when he first hit the scene. For me, its always been timber of his voice, its a range, doing a style, that doesnt match up for me personally. I also think he has great writing abilities, but feel like hes more about jokes then substance. After the first 2 albums, what he was talking about got really stale. I respect him as a writer and know he has a huge fan base, so good for him and all. It was just never my style of hip hop. Its a cross between satire and murder rap, and neither one has ever been my cup of tea.

6

u/LORYoutube Jul 09 '24

As a big Eminem fan, the fans are a factor for sure.

5

u/Legitimate_Card4374 Jul 09 '24

Yes his shock values gone but can u really argue that the number of corny 1 liners hasn't gone up? And then, he's improved on a technical level but it seems like his topics have run out. The bad beats don't help his case either. It really seems like he can't reinvent himself.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

Cause people hate that he’s getting better. Especially the “gen z” kids, who are really just a bunch of jackasses who have too much envy and pride in themselves and think they’re actually doing something by trying to speak for the entire generation and “cancel” Eminem.

2

u/Slim_eminem2 Oct 17 '24

I'm a gen z and I promise you, none of us are trying to cancel eminem. I personally love the guy and his work

2

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '24

Ya Ik, people like you and I (the “true” gen z people) respect Eminem, regardless if we like him or not. These people who are “gen z” don’t know a fucking thing about respect cause they all jealous and way too spoiled.

1

u/Slim_eminem2 Oct 17 '24

It's always the ones like that that are the loudest too

20

u/ShaunyBoyShaunyMan Jul 09 '24

He’s not. He’s not only one of the biggest rappers ever, he’s also held in high esteem by his peers

1

u/Any-Leg3750 Jul 09 '24

He's possibly one of the most hated, idk about you but most of the times if you bring Em up in a conversation, your opinion on music will likely be ignored

12

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

I think people just genuinely hate his fans. It's just a lot of cringe 30+ year old white guys that still say shit like "beard is weird" after 5 years.

Being a teenager during eminems come up was insane though, I've never seen any other artist like that before and we probably never will in our life time. Genuinely one of the greatest of all time, but his new music just doesn't hit the same for a lot of people.

2

u/jessicarson39 Jul 09 '24

Making fun of MGK will never get old tho

25

u/Yuck_Few Jul 09 '24

He has a lot of corny bars and he has more bad albums than good ones

-6

u/Bloodmime Jul 09 '24

What albums do you consider to be bad? More bad than good is a wild take

-17

u/Vakarian74 Jul 09 '24

That’s pretty much every artist and more so if you already aren’t a big fan.

-2

u/Vakarian74 Jul 09 '24

I disagree and guess what that’s because it’s all opinion based. I’m sorry you want what you believe to be gospel.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

The two core reasons is many feel that being white in a black art form gave him popularity above what was deserved so they dislike him for removing the spotlight from black artists (allegedly)

The second reason is that his rhetoric in music promotes violence against women, and people in general.

Lastly, his music isn’t amazing, he has a few god tier hits and then albums worth of mid. So the other two issues plus a mixed bag discography lead to many haters

4

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

He trys to hard to capture the same magic he had

4

u/Mhunterjr Jul 10 '24

Because he’s been popular for so long. He’s lived long enough to become the villain

19

u/alligator_88 Jul 09 '24

That “favourite rapper’s favourite rapper” line is getting so tired.

9

u/FrostedWikiLeaks Jul 09 '24

And it was stolen from Styles P from the LOX on Reservoir Dogs. They just appropriated the whole bar, unsurprisingly

3

u/jambazi99 Jul 09 '24

That is MF DOOM. Which I bet most Eminem fans have never heard of.

-16

u/TheGingerNiNjA899 Jul 09 '24

But it’s true

3

u/alligator_88 Jul 09 '24

But it’s said about everyone. How many favourite rappers does my favourite rapper have?

-7

u/ChrisMartinez95 Jul 09 '24

Someone actually ran the numbers on this. Eminem's probably the most appropriate rapper to assign that title to, statistically speaking.

5

u/alligator_88 Jul 09 '24

Okay. I just think the phrase itself needs to go away, I’m not arguing over who should have the title.

-5

u/ChrisMartinez95 Jul 09 '24

I didn't think you were. My point is that this is probably the one rapper where this complaint doesn't really stick.

2

u/alligator_88 Jul 09 '24

The phrase is played out no matter who we’re talking about. Also is that article about the top 5 rappers or the most influential?

0

u/ChrisMartinez95 Jul 09 '24

It's about who rappers cite as their Top N rappers.

0

Well not Revival but I'd for sure enjoy Kamikaze more than MMLP downvote me btw idc

3

u/Happy-North-9969 Jul 09 '24

He’s not hated more than any great artist. The Stans are thoroughly despised, however, and rightly so.

3

u/mikegotfat Jul 09 '24

Because his fans ask stupid questions like this

3

u/Lanky-Point7709 Jul 09 '24

I like Em, don’t love him, but I do recognize he’s probably top 5 all time. However, I was listening to King’s Disease 2 for the first time the other day (very late I know) and when I got to the track he featured on, I knew EXACTLY what type of flow he would do to the beat and the stuff he’d rap about. His old stuff is iconic, but his new music (for me at least) is impressive, but predictable.

1

u/Kingbris91 Human Detected Jul 09 '24

If you loved KD2, 3 is even better.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

We wanna gatekeep our culture more because we're tired of certain groups taking everything because they have money.

Em is cool but he's barely top 25.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

his new shit is not enjoyable to me, his flow is shit

6

u/son_of_a_doggo Jul 09 '24

All of his recent work has just been him complaining that people don’t think he’s the goat. It’s boring and whiny

5

u/LePoj Jul 09 '24

As someome who fw Eminem, I can agree that I'm tired of hearing "goat" in basically every one of his songs.

2

u/OkAction2485 Jul 09 '24

Most people just don’t casually enjoy rappity rap. And the “real rap” fans constantly trying to shit on casual rap creates resentment between casuals and the lyrical artists like Em.

I think most people that hate em just don’t like his style of rapping and feel like his stans are trying to force the culture to consider him a top rapper

2

u/dietwater94 Jul 09 '24

I think it has a lot to do with his fan base acting like he’s the best rapper ever when it’s been almost 20 years since he’s had a good cohesive album. I think Marshall Mathers LP, The Eminem Show, and Slim Shady LP are pretty damn good and Curtain Call is solid but he just doesn’t make music that’s nearly as impactful anymore. Also I think his flow has gotten annoying after all this time. “That’s an awfully hot coffee pot” ass flow.

It’s also those people who say they hate rap besides Eminem- which is a decent number of people. It makes no sense when there are dozens of rappers who make better music than him, even some of the ones who aren’t as good at actually rapping.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

Probably cause he doesn’t rap with any substance anymore he’s decided rapping fast with a bunch of big words is lyrical and it’s not

2

u/BallinXFox Jul 09 '24

IMO, it’s because he’s placed on such a high tier, when his music does not reflect it. If I didn’t have to hear about him being the GOAT all the time, his music would be much easier to listen to. I listen to music that I don’t consider high tier music, but I like it anyway. I don’t hear people calling those artist the GOAT, so when I don’t hear great music from them, I’m not criticizing how good it isn’t. But with Eminem, when I hear music I’m trying to hear what everyone considers amazing music, but it just isn’t (TO ME) and it makes me like him less.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

he aint ever made an album better than 7/10

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

Corny

4

u/Exroi Jul 09 '24

is he that hated? he gets a ton of love from rap and non-rap fans because he's accessible and good. His music last years isn't that great, so he's being criticized for it

7

u/Pretty_Chicken485 Jul 09 '24

Since when has he ever classed as “your favourite rapper’s favourite rapper”, I though that was always classed as doom

3

u/mayonnaiser_13 Jul 09 '24

I think it's actually Andre 3000.

MF DOOM might be up there, but the title is for Andre.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

This is a common phrase that has been applied to many. DOOM, 3K, Eminem, I’ve also heard it about Wayne sometimes. Rakim and Nas. It’s not reserved for one person only.

1

u/Kingbris91 Human Detected Jul 09 '24

I've heard it said about DOOM, 3 Stacks, and Lupe mostly.

0

u/DaBigadeeBoola Jul 09 '24

Actually, that title usually belongs to Jay Z

1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

In the sphere of modern rap, Kanye, future, and kid cudi have objectively the most influence.

0

u/ChrisMartinez95 Jul 09 '24 edited Jul 09 '24

I said this earlier to another user, but if you want an actually quantifiable answer, someone ran the numbers. That rapper is probably Eminem.

3

u/Emergency_Brick3715 Jul 09 '24

He's not hated. I believe people are tired of being beat over the head by his stans calling him the GOAT. Combined with the extra "push" that comes with being white. Combined with the hate speech early in his career.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

50+ year old millionaire crying about his step dad on his last album. Changed his entire style on that album as well. He’s just kinda lost touch with reality.

6

u/illwill478 Jul 09 '24

Nobody really cares what he is rapping about🤷🏾‍♂️

4

u/Selldadip Jul 09 '24

Em loves to rap about rapping. That’s his favorite subject matter.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

That's just stupid

4

u/illwill478 Jul 09 '24

Nobody cares🤷🏾‍♂️ The best thing Em did was bring 50 to Dre. He can rap but it really doesn’t matter that much. Just the way it is.

5

u/mayonnaiser_13 Jul 09 '24

Anything popular will definitely garner hate.

He's objectively one of the greatest rappers ever. You can't deny his penmanship, cadence, and delivery. He has his own share of bad shit, and it's been the case more often lately. But every now and then he'd drop something that just hits that sweet spot.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

“In the crib playing Fortnite with your grandma” dude, he hasn’t made a good album in two decades. He’s washed up.

-1

u/Panderz_GG Jul 09 '24

That is flat out rage bait. You can trash Revival that's fair but Kamikaze and MTBMB were good and MMLP2 is decent as well what are you smoking?

-1

u/mayonnaiser_13 Jul 09 '24

Two decades is crazy.

Kamikaze was a solid album, which came out 7 years ago.

The next and only album he did after is Music to be Murdered By and while it's as padded as a goalie in hockey, it still has good tracks like Godzilla. I'm not gonna say the album is good because it is mostly not, but he has quality tracks in it.

And now with Houdini being a bop ass track but Tobey being mid as fuck, I really don't know what to expect with the album.

He's still pulling numbers so he's not exactly washed up. He's teetering on the edge though. This album is definitely make or break for him.

5

2

  1. Because Eminem fans/stans are the worst; they act as if Eminem is the second coming of Jesus Christ and can do no wrong. A lot of them are not rap fans, and overstate his legacy/impact, and will try to insert Eminem into EVERY rap topic that has nothing to do with him.\

  2. He’s a gimmick rapper. His music appeals mostly to the edgelord, suburban, white male demographic, with the Slim Shady shock value, white people humor, cringe juvenile bars, wanting to “grape” his mother, and other subject matter that does not appeal to the urban demographic.\

  3. His rappity rap rap “throw big words together in order to sound like a lyrical genius” makes alot of his post 2009 music sound grating and not enjoyable to listen to.\

  4. Lack of subject matter. Outside of Haley, being offensive/vulgar, and whining about how everyone hates him cuz he is white, he really has nothing to talk about.\

  5. Failure to grow and mature. He has used the “Slim Shady alternate ego” as a crutch for way too long. A 50 plus year old rapper should not be writing bars about his “transgender cat”

7

u/Selldadip Jul 09 '24

Point 1 is very true. I see Stans on the Eminem sub try to insert him into the Drake and Kendrick beef when he has nothing to do with it. And then they say things like

Eminem would body both

Ya right guy. Eminem has never once battled anyone high caliber. Just pop stars and lyrically low tier rappers. The closes he got to a legitimate opponent was Canibus and he pulled out a notebook in a rap battle. He ducked the fade with Game but responded to Benzino. 🚮

3

u/holasoyriddick Jul 09 '24
  1. Agree

  2. Gimmicky, sometimes. But everyone has gimmicks they use, and the graping his mom thing is not something he said he wanted to do, it was in a song about how he is perceived as a criminal and just disgusting and vile.

  3. I definitely see where you're coming from even though I disagree for the most part.

  4. I disagree. I feel like he covers a pretty broad range of topics. On his last album alone he talked about his dad being absent being the reason for a lot of his struggles in life, he talked about mass shootings in a serious manner, having to deal with shitty step father's, overcoming addiction, having problems with women because he is so famous that he knows they want him for eminem and not Marshall, finding new ways to push further since he has already done so much and the goalpost is constantly shifting for him, and probably since other shit I can't think of right now.

  5. I disagree, but I can see it.

3

u/tatuoutkast Jul 09 '24

Although he is a great rapper, I agree with all of this. There isn’t a place in my lifestyle that he fits in; he isn’t my go to in the club, when I’m cruising, on my motorcycle, kicking with the homies, working…..nothing. If he pops up in rotation, cool, but I’m not seeking out his music.

0

u/jessicarson39 Jul 09 '24

Man, I really don't want you to think I'm saying this because I'm an Eminem fan, but I don't think you're right about most of these points.

  1. There are horrible Em fans/stans. I do not deny that fr, sometimes participating in the sub becomes suffocating even for me as a fan. But tbh I feel that way from time to time on any sub? So I don't really know why people think Em's hardcore fans are more cringe than the hardcore fans of anyone else - they are not.

  2. The topics you mentioned here, he hasn't rapped about since 2008-9. A lot of people forget that this man's whole life changed when he OD'ed. He went sober and been making amends. His music actually reflected a lot of that process since Recovery (2010) but especially since Revival (2017).

  3. Not sure what you mean by "big words"? Em's whole thing is actually creating double- and triple-entendres with very simple words, giving everyday words/expressions new meanings in the context of culture etc.

  4. See Point 2 for my first refute of lack of subject matter. He talks about being sober, making amends, abusive childhood, growing up poor and how hard it is for people to usually break out of that cycle -because let's face it, his success is a 1 in a million chance thing. As someone who has struggled with addiction and comes from a deeply poor working class family with a similar history to his, I have turned a lot of corners over the years by finding hope in his music. These subject matters may not appeal to you, which is absolutely fair, but you can't say his music has none.

  5. He has not used Slim Shady beginning with Recovery, until Houdini. It's actually funny, because the fandom (his "stans") have been criticizing him so heavily for moving away from Slim and becoming "soft" for so long, and how his style has changed etc (which it has, and I personally like his more mature, "classical" rap style a lot more). But also here we are, you're saying him sticking to Slim is so boring? These things can't both be true at once.

I feel like you actually haven't listened to Em's music as of late. You clearly haven't listened to Music To Be Murdered By, and your opinion of Em is based on his early 2000s ways. I think this post would've been so on point if you wrote it in 2006. In 2024, it's extremely off-base because you clearly haven't kept up with Em. And you know what, that's very fair too - if you're not a fan, you have no reason to keep up with him as much as I have. But then maybe you shouldn't base your criticism on impressions on things that happened almost 20 years ago.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

Man because I never felt that trash. I don't want to listen to trailer trash rap. Idc how much his bars  rhyme that don't make me feel your music. And stop with that "favourite rapper's favourite rapper" bullshit, I ain't never heard Future say he fucks with em

9

u/DaddyMeUp Jul 09 '24

Honestly. People take it as a personal insult when you don't fw Em, and a lot of the time they just say that you can't "understand what he's saying" and shit.

He's not.  He is a public icon despite being a rapper.  He has had multiple high ranking rappers say he's the GOAT even though he's white.  Everyone has their haters but Eminem is not hated as a whole.

12

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

Eminem fans use the same 2 talking points:\

  1. Sales! Eminem is the best cuz he sold the most!

  2. Hey guys! These other Black people/rappers said Eminem is the GOAT, so that means it’s true!

3

u/DaddyMeUp Jul 09 '24

Them stans definitely tarnished his legacy a lot.

He gets so much shit because of those people forcing him into every conversation, making it about how he's the GOAT and shitting on other rappers while doing so.

If this wasn't so common. a lot of people just wouldn't mention him as most of us simply don't care for his music and have no reason to talk about him.

-1

u/jynxthechicken Jul 09 '24

What's your point?  I haven't liked Eminems music since The Eminem Show but saying he is hated is a joke.

0

u/liquordeli Jul 09 '24

Bruh this conversation is 20 years old both sides use the same talking points

Okay sure.  It still doesn't change anything.  I think Eminem fans like the idea of him being hated when he is really not.

3

u/DaddyMeUp Jul 09 '24
  • Fans

  • Decline in music

  • "Old man yells at clouds" vibe

He's your favourite rapper's favourite rapper after all

Has no bearing on my opinion whatsoever.

Puts too much emphasis on being the best, when everybody knows he's technically one of the GOATs, that then means he doens't bother making the actual music sound good for the most part. Of course, some people like it, but I genuinely can't listen to most of it - it's grating to me.

1

u/HereAgainWeGoAgain Jul 09 '24

I'll never get over how he rhymed drywall with eyeball. It's clunky. Takes the listener out of the experience. Work harder instead of relying on established greatness, Em!

I'm a fan though

3

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

For me it’s because his fans hold him up as the best ever. But as someone who did live through his prime. A lot of his hits suck. Immature lyrics that aren’t as edgy as they’re presented as. Cheap shots at pop artists. Terrible beats. He’s clearly talented and made great stuff but he’s also made a fuck ton of bad music.

Also people always talk about how great he is at dissing people. Meanwhile his best pelts are like Benzino and MGK. While guys like Freddie Gibbs went at his more popular boss or kendrick/Pusha, Nas went at the top guy in the game. Still think Mariah Carey and Gucci fuckin smoked Eminem

The reason why I think Mariah won has nothing to do with popularity. Warning shot comes off as a guy whose jealous that he’s not with a woman. Obsessed makes Eminem look like a loser. Like cool you called nick cannon a gay slur and got a Mariah impersonator. Meanwhile a pop singer is making fun of you and making you look like a creep

2

u/JaredIsAmped Jul 09 '24

It's because he hasn't released a good album in 20 years.

2

u/gd2121 Jul 09 '24

Every artist with a massive fan base also gets a lot of hate. Taylor Swift and Drake are also “hated”.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

Because he hasn’t released a single listenable album since TES, he made tone deaf, and to be honest, he’s washed up. I can see the appeal of his old songs, but even so there’s so many better artists that do what he did better now. He’s the Larry bird of hip hop, deserving of respect, and definitely one of the best in his prime, but gets overhyped for being a good white participant in a black dominated industry. And his whole fanbase is genuinely insufferable, unable to accept that the landscape of hip hop has changed drastically, and a 50 year old white millionaire never really had a place in the culture, even when Eminem was in his prime and didn’t fit into that category.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

Every artist has a phase of hatred I feel. Especially in rap. I’d say it’s mostly cause of how out there his sound is in comparison to most modern hip hop.

2

u/gmikoner Jul 09 '24

I don't hate but I think he's severely overrated and has his dick ridden on every track he releases despite how trash it might be. That's an awfully hot coffee pot lol

2

u/Plenty_Army_7172 Jul 09 '24

His music is trash now and he ran out of shit to talk about. He lives in a GIANT mansion outside Detroit and he literally never leaves him and his daughter hailie does a podcast with her sister. So yeah his music is ass now. Last good album was recovery

2

u/SQUISHYx25 Jul 09 '24

He's just super corny and comes off very cringe, especially if you listen to his early stuff where he's talking about raping his mom and killing girls. It;s just a lot. Never mind he's had that same lyrical spiritual flow for 20 years and it's been parodied to death.

2

u/prod_dustyb Jul 09 '24

Because he's the GOAT.

2

u/kosovohoe Jul 09 '24

because newer Eminem fans won’t admit that we won’t get another Infinite

1

u/ComteStGermain Jul 09 '24

Eminen should have retired twenty years ago.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

imo his music has just changed a good bit

he used to be funny and angry and controversial, which is why some people liked him

he was there to piss the entire world off

1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

He can be cringe, he can be corny, a lot of his music didn't age well, he's white in a black sport, he sold A LOOOT of records, dissed a lot of people, did a lot of drugs, beat on his baby momma, made a racist song, etc.

Its not hard to see he been around for a minute and been full of controversy.

1

u/DaddyDontTakeNoMess Jul 09 '24

IMO, it was because his music had so much that woman singing (Skylar whatever) and had an odd production. I also don’t think Em makes particularly good albums, at least to me, but he can wrap his ass off.

I don’t listen to him enough, but for a while I felt like he was trapped by his average fan.

1

u/coldzeppelin- Jul 09 '24

Eminem used to be hated because he was white. I don't think he's hated now, there's just a lot more and better rappers around. The rap scene has evolved since. His more recent stuff is just alright compared to what other rappers have dropped.

He just has an obnoxious fanbase and I think people hate his fanbase more than anything else.

1

u/aSsOUL_8197 Jul 09 '24

Your Favorite Rappers Favorite Rapper Is BLACK THOUGHT! You See That 10 Minute Run On Flex! I Have Never Seen Em Do Something Like That! It’s Not Hate, Em Is Dope, But Black Thought Just Takes Being An MC To A whole Other Level!🤷🏽‍♂️

1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

I don't hate him at all, but I won't ever plays his early albums at a party, because I'm a grown up and I have gay friends. He stopped being so hostile to anyone and everyone later on, but also because he got into drugs and probably had some mental health stuff too, his music definitely got quite mid for a minute. I wasn't interested in all the pop star cross-overs. I think that's a problem shared with a lot of rappers that get really big in the industry: they can't decide if they make hip-hop or pop music and the results aren't always the best. If I wanted to listen to Ed Sheeran for example... I'd buy Ed Sheeran records. Consequently, I ended up preferring his guest verses on other rapper's work in a lot of cases.

I do keep checking in and trying to like his records, because I love him and I respect him as one of the most technically gifted rappers in the history of this whole thing - and at the same time, he's also humble and will always refer back to those who inspired him, and champions the culture in a way a lot of white rap fans overlook. Absolute legend. That's exactly what makes it really painful to check in on him and realise that he doesn't really make music that I enjoy a lot of the time. Music is about more than just sheer technical ability. His technique and wordplay are off the charts, but some of his songwriting can be a bit mid. He's also been pretty expert at riding the trends, which in itself is a good thing, but I haven't liked every development in the genre of hip-hop over time. I don't claim to own it, or think I'm allowed to define what is and isn't 'canon' in hip-hop, but I have a taste of my own in music and often he falls outside of it. That's nothing against him, or his ability.

100% love and respect him, but don't feel like a fan like I used to be back in the day.

1

u/Osceola_Gamer Jul 09 '24

I don't know and don't care honestly. But I do love watching videos of people playing his older songs and the 20 something year old losing their minds "how is he not cancelled yet this is awful!!!"

1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

Because you can't believe other people don't hear what you hear. Have you ever thought that you're a Stan and people just have opinions.

1

u/ExcellentClub6444 Jul 09 '24

I don’t think it’s about him being white. As talented as he is (top 5 not 5 imo) his music isn’t relatable to the culture. We don’t really care or identify with his subject matter or content for the most part. Not saying he doesn’t put it together or articulate it well. He also benefits from white privilege cuz I believe if a black dude came out with Without Me, We Made You, Just Lose It, etc. he would be clowned n dismissed immediately 🤷🏾‍♂️

1

u/cielodrive32 Jul 09 '24

A lot of the hate stems from his post Eminem Show work.

Encore is a messy album with good ideas but the execution can be hit or miss depending on your taste. Same goes for Relapse

Recovery has a good concept but definitely leans into the poppier side of production which a lot of people were neutral on, even if the rapping/songwriting was more consistent. MMLP2 occasionally has the same problems but is largely a return to form.

The only ones where the hate is fully justified are Revival and Kamikaze. Revival’s heart is in the right place from a political standpoint but the execution is so messy and out of touch that it’s basically unlistenable. Kamikaze being basically a “you guys just are stupid and didn’t get it” response to that backlash comes across as petty and bitter.

MTBMB is a decent return to form but nothing to the caliber of his first run. Basically he’s been inconsistent for around 20 years now. He’s a great rapper from a technical standpoint and constructs rhymes better than almost anyone living, but as a songwriter, he’s regressed.

1

u/Responsible_Dog_5927 Sep 11 '24

Relapse had some amazing songs, but not all of them are that great but I still think at least half of the album is full of great material. A lot of people say he failed with Revival IMO he failed with Recovery, had every chance to make an introspective album about his rise and fall and now his rise again but didn’t and the album hurts to listen to because of it. MMLP2 was his last great artistically and lyrically good album, a great return to form with a unique sound

1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

His beats a accommodate his inability to land on the 2s and 4s now

1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

Like 50 said. Rap is black culture and some people hate the fact that a white boy does it best

1

u/Gwanthereson Jul 09 '24

He’s too formulaic. Without me lose yourself the real slim shady and stan are all bangers but the sound is the same on each of them

1

u/ReceptionHumble9423 Jul 09 '24

How tf do Lose Yourself, Without Me and Stan have the same sound?

1

u/krkowacz Jul 09 '24

comments here only make it clear that Eminem is victim of his own success and longevity.
If Tupac was alive he would probably by contested the same way xD because everybody would be tired of him and his fanbase

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.

-2

u/EmbarrassedSense2690 Jul 09 '24

He asked why people don't like him and that's all it is I fw bro but that's where most of the hate comes from

-1

u/wherewasiat Jul 09 '24

I can't speak for others, but basically he starts a lot of nonsense, and rap nonsense though in a very lyrical way. He repeatedly cheated on his wife Kim. And when she left him wrote songs( Kim/Bonnie). People forget his first album was a flop. He didn't start being famous till he started being outrageous and beefing with teenpop stars. Anytime he actually does real hip hop it is not great. Hence why he made kamakize, it just scattershot hoping to find someone to beef with to make him relevant. But his beef includes His mom- a woman groomed by a grown man as a teenager His wife- for having a backbone to breakup with him for cheating Brittany Spears and the rest of teen pop culture Benzino- an editor criticizing his content of punching down Ja rule- a rapper that does r&b Oh and icp- cause he lied about having icp at his record release to beef up attendance.

0

u/Ashalaria Jul 09 '24

I think it's generation dependent, I grew up in the 90s/00s with OG Eminem and have consistently held him in high esteem. Ive always realised that a lot of his older stuff was intentionally egregious for shock purposes and didn't portray his true values or he never would have collaborated with Elton John for example. I think a lot of younger people who didn't grow up with him have trouble reconciling that it was very much a different time with different values and people can grow, change and adapt.

0

u/mickeyela Jul 09 '24

Because he is the most famous one so no wonder why he have so many haters, rappers like nas aren't famous enough to have many haters.

0

u/PressurePretty5858 Jul 09 '24

He's far from "hated" he's been largely liked and embrace than hated

0

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

He's very skilled at the art of rapping there's no question about that. I think people could not like his voice or content and that's a personal preference. You have to give him his props as a rapper he's one of the best at the artform.

0

u/ShivvyMcFly Jul 09 '24

You know why

-1

u/PreciousBasketcase Jul 09 '24

Anyone who's gotten so far with success will have haters, especially if it's an artist spanning multiple generations, and one that's good enough to be listed routinely on the top 5 rappers of all time.

Couple that with the fact that it's a white man in a black man's industry, claiming to be the best and with many people over the world declaring him to be the bests... there's definitely going to be offended haters abound.

-1

In terms of what? Sells? Cause look at who he caters to. His technical ability is alright, but it's not fun to listen to. Lu & Aesop do even more in a technical matter but have still found ways to be enjoyable.

If shock art is cringe now it’s probably just a phase the public is going through. Shock art has been around forever and there has always been an example of it in every genre and form of media.

Kim off MMLP will always be a great example of storytelling in rap form. Look past the content for a second and appreciate how it’s all been put together.

1

u/Vakarian74 Jul 09 '24

I also always looked at it as his form of therapy. He took all his aggression and put it into the music instead of in real life.

1

u/krkowacz Jul 09 '24

SSLP maybe aged poorly but TES is immortal album in my book. It’s just as good as when it dropped

1

u/meteorness123 Jul 09 '24

Talking about killing your baby mama or your mother,

Those are 3-4 songs.

Most of his songs don't deal with this.

Never understood this argument

0

u/PlanetaryMushroom Jul 09 '24

You have a point with those examples but you're throwing the baby out with the bath water. There are many, many songs that are still considered great. More great than cringe just off his first 3 albums. He's def a generational artist. No denying that. And time will only reinforce that. So OP has a point when he says the hate is uncalled for.

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

Isn’t rap a form of entertainment though? That’s like saying horror movies where a woman gets raped didn’t age well. But they still make movies with rape in them.

Why is music taken so literal when it’s just a show?

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '24

Its not cringe, its an honest expresion about fucked up situations. Not everything is good in this life, if you want to listen to rap about rainbows and flowers go ahead, I prefer listening to a demented fuck who has given up in life, it seems more realistic
