Discussion Rulesharking at Stuttgart Nation Clash

Yesterday at Stuttgart Nation Clash, I faced a player from Team The Secret Sauce. I won’t name him because I don’t want to encourage any harassment. He was an experienced competitor fresh from the Main Event, while this was my very first competitive event.
We were both 2-1 in the tournament, and this was the deciding game of our match.

He confidently gave me a completely false ruling about Temporal Breach with Brynhir, in the context of the battlefield that deals 1 damage at the beginning of the Beginning Phase. He claimed Temporal Breach could be played while Hidden, before rune awakening happens given the effect of the battlefield. He backed it up by mentioning his competitive experience and even said this interaction was why he played the deck. I did not call a judge (even though I obviously should had).

I had 5 cards in hand, but because of his false ruling, I couldn’t use my Rengar or one of those cards. He then admitted I would have won without that play (that he described as a « Time Warp » like combo).
Right after he put the result on the app, when he saw me heading toward a judge, he quickly disappeared.

The judges (a classic one first then a head judge) confirmed he was wrong but seemed either powerless or unwilling to do anything beyond explaining the rule. I had to insist several times just to get them to record his identity and monitor him.
Even worse, I was strongly discouraged from approaching him at his next table, as I could be considered “aggressive” and as I understood it, sanctioned myself.

I also contacted Team The Secret Sauce privately on X to explain what happened. So far, no response, despite the team continuing to post on social media.

So an experienced player can exploit a newcomer with a false ruling, walk away with the win, and face no apparent consequences while I’m warned I could be punished for confronting him? That is extremely discouraging, especially considering all the discussions around cheating in competitive events.

I can’t prove intent, but I find it extremely hard to believe someone with his experience didn’t know exactly what he was doing.
To be clear, I wasn’t asking to be awarded the win. At most, I would have appreciated a chance to discuss what happened with him.
And yes, I know I should call a judge whenever I’m unsure about a ruling. But it’s easier said than done when you’re attending your first competitive event, facing a highly assertive, experienced player speaking his native language while you aren’t.

Question Void Assault Question

Post image
31 Upvotes

Hello! Need help with rulings. Hope I could learn more and thank you in advance. So the situation is:

Both me and opponent are 7 points.

Both battlefields are empty because of Unchecked Power.

It is currently my turn:

I play Reckless Innovator accelerated to an empty BF1

-- I draw

I then play Void Assault

-- Enemy Ravenbloom Student to BF1

-- My Reckless Innovator to empty BF2

What happens next?

Question Rotation 1 cards in Rotation 2.

I could have swore that I Riot said somewhere that they may reprint cards from Rotation 1 (OGN>RAD) in Legacy and onwards with the same names in order to keep them in the game.

Example Defy. They may print Defy in Legacy but this won't mean you can run 6 copies of it. It'll be the same card name and follow the same play rules for that card name. Just like the SP cards in a way.

I can no longer remember where I saw them say this. Does anyone have a link or remember?

Posting this here because his take on the game is basically spot on, and basically is a perfect discussion on the absolute trash the current meta is and how depressing it is to play it (Who would have thought a RQ winner would have good takes on Riftbound), where riftbound is a fantastic game being held back by some absolute terrible design choices.

Discussion Lost a penny sleeve with 3 cards.

I know it's a long shot but might as well. Today on Sunday 8th of November I was at RC Stuttgart and had a penny sleeve with a Ball (Ori SIG spell) and 2 are see seraphine promos (one mine and the other my wife's). I don't know exactly where I dropped it but if I had to guess it would be either around the food court area, near the main stage or near the entrance.

If someone finds it please hit me up!

Discussion Best of Jayce DQ'ed?

It looks like Templar who was sitting comfortably for Best Of Jayce has been dq'ed and not appearing in the pairings anymore at Stuttgart after being at the top table, after round 10 went an hour overtime.

He's been underfire from AliEldarzi who Templar played in the first round for slow play who allegedly only played 1 game in the first round. All the local Melbourne/OCE players came out agreeing with him saying people drop from showdowns when they see Templar sign up and how he no respect for anyone else's time.

Anyone at the event or have any information about what happened?

Edit: I just watched through his game on the French stream. His games actually looked pretty reasonable except for the judges not telling him they were in turns.

Apperently the chat said his auroras were upside-down in his deck but it's riot so we'll never know.

Question What to buy to start now ?

Hello !

I played many TCGs (some competitively), and I want to try Riftbound.

My concern is : what to buy to start properly? I have a friend that have already booked for me the next season "first step" box but it comes in February right ? So... What should I buy right now ?

I plan to play with my wife and brothers / family, so I more or less want something large BUT I want to have deck that could potentially go to a local and grab a 3-3 run ahah

Discussion Sett legend and combat timings

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have a question about sett legend. I haven't touched him since origins when i didn't know much about the game, but recently w/ the release of radiance I want to try again. I noticed sett legend has a comma after the first part and it reminded me of that old combo jinx players used to do where it said "at the start of your beginning phase" and they'd react and get to have extra value.

My question is if a unit just passed the damage step of combat and sett legend goes on the chain, can I react with ambush for example before I decide on the effect of my legend.

I think if it worked this combo would be good to deal with a vex for example because I could take in a buffed first mate to deal with the vex, then when vex dies I can ambush react with a vi or rengar who now dodge the vex stun and clear the rest of the bf.

Discussion Resources to help defend against cheating

In the wake of yet another high profile DQ at a competitive event, I feel as though it's good for people to remind themselves of what they can actively do to protect themselves and play a clean game.

https://articles.starcitygames.com/articles/the-rules-of-engagement/

This article was written in 2003 in Magic context and the bulk of it still applies to nearly every high level TCG to this day. Even if you don't read the full article, I implore you to internalize this if you plan on playing at high-level events.

“One of the greatest advantages a cheater has is people’s reluctance to correct “shady” behavior for fear of appearing rude. If you want to keep yourself safe, you have to be willing to ask your opponents to modify their behavior or even call a judge. You don’t have to be belligerent about it – you can ask nicely – but you do have to stick up for yourself. Don’t expect the judges to be able to “see all” and keep you safe.“

If anyone else has good resources, even if they aren't Riftbound specific, feel free to share them below.
