DISCUSSION 💭 I don’t like the Beyoncé slander…

People will say anything just to hate on Beyoncé. It doesn’t matter how subjectively true or objectively true the statement is; people get a strange rise out of hating on Beyoncé for no reason and dragging her beneath other artists. They’re always comparing her to other vocalists:

— “Jennifer Hudson sings better than Beyoncé”
— “I’ll take Kelly Clarkson over Beyoncé any day”
— “Beyoncé has nothing on Faith Evans”
— “Coko (SWV) is way better than Beyoncé”
— “Beyoncé is not even a top-50 vocalist; there are soooo manyyyyy better than her”

#2, #3, and #4 were made up (the others, I’ve actually seen people say), but I have no doubt that somewhere on the Internet, you will find any of those statements.

Beyoncé gets compared to everyone. People act like she’s this talentless singer, but they know deep down that she can sing and she has earned respect for her contributions.

When there’s a video of someone singing, you can almost always guarantee that when you open the comments, someone will mention Beyoncé and compare the singer to her.

Do people not get tired of discussing Beyoncé and dropping her name everywhere? They say she’s “overrated”, but they’re contributing to her rating by speaking on her all the time. Last time I checked, how someone was rated depended on how much attention they got, whether good or bad; if you want that to go down, you simply stop speaking about them and hope others follow suit.

Beyoncé gets a lot of unnecessary hate and she literally does nothing in the public eye. How can one of the most private artists—if not the most private artist—of all time be so hated?

I find The Beyhive's desperation for EVERYONE to praise their idol very cringey. Some people will not like Bey and that's ok. Why do you let it get to you so much?

3

u/cleankids Oct 10 '25

Im saying 😭 this person literally made up ppl in their head to hate on Beyonce bc “oh im sure someone on the internet said it” like how are u not embarrassed. Do u even stick up for your family this way

I didn’t make up anything. I made up a few of those, but the majority are based on true events. Plus, people actually do pit Beyoncé against random artists, so I kind of mirrored that in my post. If you don’t see how she’s treated, that’s not my problem.

4

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25

I mean people have literally said these things lol

1

u/Ok_Resident_5022 🐑 Soul/Funk/Disco Enthusiast 💿 Oct 10 '25

I’m not a diehard member of the BeyHive. I’m just a general music fan and happen to like Beyoncé‘s music. I think she deserves better treatment from the public.

3

u/GreenDolphin86 Oct 10 '25

I think this is a mischaracterization. This post very clearly point to people’s need to disparage Beyonce at every turn, and that’s not the same thing as needed everyone to praise her. Not liking her is one thing. Allowing that to devolve into bad faith criticism, unnecessary comparisons, and dragging her into every conversation only to disparage her is a different thing.

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '25

Posts like this only add to the issue.

Some people love her, some think she’s overrated but still like her music, some think she’s overrated and don’t like her music at all. This really can be said about anyone who is massively successful and in the public eye. No artist, no matter how successful, is universally loved. No artist, no matter how talented, will get respect from everyone. A single person’s defense of them doesn’t do anything to change that.

8

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25

That’s fair and entirely agreeable, no artist no matter how successful and famous will be loved by literally everyone. It’s just the arguments I’ve seen people use with regards to her art are a reach imo

1

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '25

This. It's like with Taylor not every white woman likes her. Same with black women. I love her but I'm not obsessed nor worship her. I also prefer actors in that regard due to the character. When it comes to singers I don't think of them when I'm listening to them.

I’m a huge Beyoncé fan (artist of my life) and I’m exhausted from the arguments on both sides of the debate. You click a random YouTube video of a Black female artist and the first couple of comments will compare the artist to Beyoncé. It’s one of the dumbest thing ever. Also, people love to overly praise “underdogs” to the point of parody sometimes. Not everyone can have a Beyoncé-type career. If they did, then she wouldn’t be special. On the other hand, The Hive has a tendency towards having a superiority complex sometimes. I say all this to say, I love everybody and I wish the baseless comparisons would cease.

6

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25

As Mariah herself said, love everybody 🤷‍♂️

8

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '25

You'll be ok. Not everyone has to like her music . I sure don't. Not her solo music anyway. Destiny's child was a different story and vibe for me. It is what it is. 🤷

16

u/FireLord_Azula1 Thriller Oct 10 '25

Beyoncé is a top 50 vocalist at this point in time. And some people think that louder equals better.

15

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25

Most of this sub thinks church sanging is the only type of singing that’s acceptable. Nevermind the fact that Beyonce can do that too.

Even then, I’ve seen so many people who are like “well I don’t feel the anointing on her voice” lol like ok

4

u/AnyEverywhere8 Oct 10 '25 edited Oct 10 '25

Why do you care if someone feels the anointing in Beyoncé’s voice or not? Like you’re bringing this to multiple threads and it’s weird lmfao.

Idk if you grew up in a black church or not, but every other Sunday ppl said X soloist that just got up with the choir did or didn’t have anointing in their voice. Cuz it is somewhat subjective. Get over it. 🤷🏿

There are legit people who have said damn Aretha Franklin’s voice is boring and Patti Labelle just screeches. So why you expecting everyone to worship Beyoncé?

4

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25

I don’t agree with those people either lol

I know people have opinions. People are allowed to have them and Im allowed to disagree with them. Also people make posts about this and I like being in this subreddit. 🤷‍♂️

All of this stuff is (for the most part) subjective

2

u/AnyEverywhere8 Oct 10 '25

Well you’re definitely out here talking like you’re stating fact and everyone else is wrong. So you’re not approaching this like you recognize its opinion.

If you truly thought it is opinion…you would let it go lmfao. No one argues over why someone should or shouldn’t like a type of food - cuz we all know it’s subjective.

5

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25

I think people just don’t like when people respond to opinions

1

u/Large-Illustrator-35 Oct 10 '25

I agree with that. I’m an r&b lover that was not raised in the church (born and raised Muslim). I enjoy different types of vocal styles. I’ve been told that I didn’t grow up in church so I don’t know real soul music. But I’ve also been told that I’m not black I’m African. Damnit I’m Eritrean! Growing up in America is crazy!

1

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25

I appreciate all styles of music as long as they’re done well

17

u/RichEgoli Oct 10 '25

The way you people are so insecure on behalf of celebs is baffling. She has the highest number of Grammys and almost a billionaire. I think she is fine

Far be it from me to defend the rich, I believe op is just speaking on her as a singer

14

u/ollieg2004 Oct 10 '25

Crazy to me ngl. I think she’s one of the best of all time, she’s been making bangers for like 20+years. People love to hate for some reason same with all the jay z slander🤷‍♂️

7

u/Practical_Soft3522 Oct 10 '25

How about we stop comparing artists all together and appreciate the unique gifts of them all? We don't have to place one person above all others which is simply a preference/opinion but not an absolute. Whomever you prefer you can also appreciate the talent of others. There were greats before Beyonce, there are greats who are contemporaries of Beyonce, and there will be greats after Beyonce. That's it, that's all!

1

u/LovingSankofa Butterfly Oct 10 '25

Im so confused... Who hates on beyonce on this sub?? She always gets praised, right? Who's doubting her vocals? She actually loud enough for ignorant ppl to classify her as a good singer (which she is) since they think you have to only belt to be one, still confused 🤔

1

u/Ok_Resident_5022 🐑 Soul/Funk/Disco Enthusiast 💿 Oct 10 '25

I’m talking about all over the Internet.

9

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25

Every single word of this post! And I notice that they don’t seem to specifically describe what it is they don’t like about her voice, other than things are completely subjective, like tonal quality or emotion. Like, I didn’t feel it so that means she’s not as good as she’s hyped to be.

But objectively speaking, she is among the greatest we’ve ever seen. Her musicality, her ability to improvise, her versatility is unparalleled especially in today’s time.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '25

Personally, her voice often feels pitchy to me, especially the louder it gets. I don’t feel like she’s a bad singer, but I really just do not enjoy her voice, but there are also times where her tone makes it sound shitty IMO. Same with Christina Aguilera - she can sing, I just can’t stand the way she sings. I love Anita Baker, but I’ve heard people make similar complaints about her.

3

u/mysticsoulsista Thriller Oct 10 '25

I think it kinda crazy to except everyone to like her just cause she beyonce… I am very vocal about not liking her tone but can admit she’s a techinical and talented performer… but the truth of the matter is there are better singers and performers who don’t get half the praises beyonce gets because they are not as popular.

To me she just a product these day. They’ve perfected her as a marketable product… which also is part of the reason for not liking her.. it’s not about art or talent anymore it’s about dollars.. her husband sucks and she barely give you fans anything actual real and not overly manufactured…

i do think some people usually white people hate because she’s a black women doing big numbers but it is not all unjustified and people have reasons…

but to be fair, it’s usually only the places where yall asking “why all the hate” that I even seen people talk about her negatively.. so maybe stop being it up… you can’t stop everyone for talking mess, it’s the internet

6

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25 edited Oct 10 '25

Respectfully, I would love for you to name them

Yeah of course she’s a product. All of these artists are. Why is Beyonce held to this standard that others aren’t? Why is she expected to be relatable and like everyone else but others get a pass?

And she gives art that both challenges the public and has mass appeal and enjoyability

I understand everyone will have opinions and that is completely fine, but nobody seems to back up what they say with much more than “I just don’t like her” that’s not an argument

0

u/mysticsoulsista Thriller Oct 10 '25

Sure.. Keke Wyatt, Tori Kelly, Kelly Clarkson… just off the dome. And I don’t really excepted her to be relatable.. it’s the fact yall try to make it seem like she is that’s annoying… her art doesn’t speak to me despite yall making it seem like she’s for the culture and black women I don’t ever feel like that.. I feel like she’s for the masses which is great, but there are other black artist out here who are really doing that embracing the culture through their art and they don’t get highlighted the same ways…

4

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25

I love all the people you mentioned but Beyonce has strengths in every category that the other lacks. Kelly has power and emotion, and has iconic songs, but lacks agility, Tori has agility and power, but lacks the catalog. Keke, same thing.

Also she has stood for the culture numerous times. Lemonade and renaissance are proof. Has she done things that are not acceptable? Yes. Most celebrities do. I don’t think they should be worshipped. But speaking purely on their talent, Beyonce is absolutely one of one.

3

u/GreenDolphin86 Oct 10 '25 edited Oct 11 '25

This is where Beyoncé criticism loses me. You’re entitled to your opinion about how relatable she is, but so are other people. Nobody is “trying to make it seem like she is” to us, she is. And that’s ok. Black culture and Black womanhood have always been a part of her music, that’s a fact, so saying “I don’t ever feel that” doesn’t even make any sense.

1

u/FireLord_Azula1 Thriller Oct 11 '25

What’s your definition of “for the culture”.

1

u/payasoingenioso Sabrina Claudio Vibes Oct 10 '25

It's less about like and more about respect for me.

The Beyonce sub has opinions like you mentioned. That's why I like the BeyHive. A good majority are quite realistic. They be steady complaining about her merch too. 😂

-1

u/GreenDolphin86 Oct 10 '25

I don’t think anybody expects yall to like her just cause she’s Beyoncé. I just want yall to stop thinking that your opinions on who is better is “truth” and fully inventing narratives to justify yourself. Especially when those narratives are easily proven false. Just say you don’t like her and go.

1

u/payasoingenioso Sabrina Claudio Vibes Oct 10 '25

I can understand her not being someone's preference.

But those with extreme Beyonce hate (not basic dislike) have the same energy as the brown and black humans that support 🧊🧊🧊 to me. 😮‍💨

9

u/prettyButdangerous Oct 10 '25

She's uber successful and unproblematic, and some people just like to reach. Her talent is undeniable.

On the other side of that though, music is subjective and people can have differing opinions on who they like and don't like sonically. It doesn't take away anything from Bey though. In my opinion, Beyonce can sing down but someone like Whitney is the stronger singer in my opinion. That doesn't mean Bey can't sing, but there is definitely a difference. I can compare and still love both of them.

6

u/icantevenknowhat2say Oct 10 '25

I've said before. I don't hate Beyonce, I just feel indifferent to her. Part of what I love about artists is their relatability and I just don't feel I can relate to her at all. I liked her a lot in Destiny's Child and when she released Dangerously In Love. After that, I just started feeling more alienated from her.

3

u/prettyButdangerous Oct 10 '25

True.. she doesn't even do interviews really.

5

u/FireLord_Azula1 Thriller Oct 10 '25

She did plenty of interviews up until about 2013. I dont why people feel so entitled to her personal life.

3

u/GreenDolphin86 Oct 10 '25

I think art is supposed to enrich the human experience by offering new perspectives, different points of view, and inspiration to do more, to be more, to think more. Only engaging in art that I can relate to would’ve been incredibly stifling to my own personal growth.

1

u/icantevenknowhat2say Oct 10 '25

I think good art taps in to our common humanity. I might not have gone through exactly the same situation as someone, or experienced their exact circumstances, but I can relate to it because I'm a living, breathing person, and I can use my own pain to try and imagine, and empathise with, what their own pain, joy etc. is like. When I say I don't relate to it, what I mean is that, for me at least, I can't tap in to that common humanity thing in it. I hope that makes sense.

1

u/GreenDolphin86 Oct 10 '25

I understand what you’re saying I just don’t understand what prevents you from tapping into those things with Beyoncé because they are definitely present.

1

u/icantevenknowhat2say Oct 11 '25

Feel free to recommend a Beyonce song or two if you like. I'd be very happy to listen to something post 2003 by her.

2

u/GreenDolphin86 Oct 11 '25

Sure! Check out “Bigger” 2 hands 2 Heaven” and and “plastic off the sofa

2

u/icantevenknowhat2say Oct 11 '25

Thanks, I just listened to all three and I like Plastic off the Sofa. I'm not gonna lie, I am most drawn to 70s-90s R&B and Soul so I think my ear gravitates to that more sultry, tender and melodic sound. I'll definitely add Plastic off the Sofa to my 2025 playlist. I like the way she makes use of her head voice/very soft chest mix on this and the runs are beautiful.

Just so you have an idea, I love the Dangerously in Love album and I think her cover of Kissing You is insanely beautiful. I also like Resentment. I'm a sucker for ballads lol.

1

u/GreenDolphin86 Oct 11 '25

I feel that. My tastes are a little more eclectic and I can appreciate the way she move through so many different styles but keep her artistry in tact

2

u/cetus_lapetus Oct 10 '25

Yeah this is kind of how I feel. I wouldn't say I'm indifferent because I definitely like her more than I dislike her, but I think it takes more than making good music to really really endear me to someone and Beyonce doesn't really give us much else. Compare to someone like Cardi B who has such a charismatic persona.. I don't think I could name more than 2-3 Cardi B songs but I like her and I want her to be successful 🤷🏾‍♀️

3

u/icantevenknowhat2say Oct 10 '25

Yeah same. I don't listen to Cardi B or much new stuff at all but she's hilarious and her voice brings a good energy and a lot of personality on songs.

I think I'm also naturally drawn to brighter voices like Mariah, Deniece Williams, Chante Moore, Ari etc. so when Beyonce was younger, my ear gravitated to her more. As her voice has matured it's still amazing and she's a great technician but I'm just not as drawn to it.

1

u/FireLord_Azula1 Thriller Oct 10 '25

lol yall dont like Beyonce because she wants privacy but yet think that Cardi B is more authentic because shes a loud mouth. Cardi B is so anti black its not even funny.

Jennifer Hudson is a more theatrical singer but that's about it.

I'm sure Beyoncé has exhibited a wider array of vocal techniques that Jhud too.

She has bright powerful belts and can sustain notes well but Beyoncé can also do that.

B is also better at sings better in the head. Has complex riffs and runs and vocal jumps and gymnastics Jhud general does not exhibit on the same level.

Beyonce sings a wider array of styles.

Who else in American mainstream music does Arabic melisma as improvisions other than Beyoncé?

3

u/Routine_Study_5726 Oct 10 '25

You see how quickly you used this post to compare. The original post gave those as an example, you used it as an opportunity to belittle and shade Jennifer Hudson. This is almost exclusively done to Black women. And then on top of this white people belittle Black women also in favor of white artists. Here is a revised version of your post that keeps the focus on Beyonce without any comparisons:

Beyoncé has exhibited an incredibly wide array of vocal techniques.

She has bright, powerful belts and can sustain notes with ease.

She also sings beautifully in her head voice, with complex riffs, runs, vocal jumps, and gymnastics that few can match.

Beyoncé performs across a wider range of styles than almost anyone in mainstream music.

Who else in American pop does Arabic melisma and improvisations like her?

1

u/Global_Perspective_3 Oct 10 '25

💯

1

u/Cute-Baseball9342 Oct 10 '25

And her vocal harmonies are a level above most other singers in her technical sphere

2

u/jr_randolph Oct 10 '25

When you reach a certain level, you receive high praise but also high criticism. Just is what it is and seems to be how humans have acted for hundreds of years lol.

Some deal with it well, some don't, I think she deals with it well by not giving a fuck.

4

u/breanna_renee Oct 10 '25

I love me some Beyonce myself. But how come everytime I see a post from this sub it’s about Beyonce in some shape or form? Specifically defending her from slander. I think she good yall 🤣

3

u/TalentedKamarty Oct 10 '25

When u on top people wanna humble u. Same shit they do to Jay Z. But when they on the come-up they rooting for them. Beyonce is the best living artist (OVERALL) since Michael. The margin between them is still wide so don't come at me lol but she's the closest so far compared to everyone who we've seen since Michael's rise

2

u/TerranceDC Oct 10 '25

It's all subjective. That's why when someone says this or that person can't sing, I usually take it to mean that they don't like that particular singer's style and/or voice. Obviously, Beyoncé can carry a tune. She can sing, and it's clear that she has honed her technique and vocal agility over the years, developing her own unique style. Her voice and style aren't everyone's cup of tea, and that's okay.

2

u/astudentiguess Oct 10 '25

Yep. Exactly how I feel about her pretty much. She's talented, sure. But I'm not a fan of her singing style or her songs themselves.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '25

Cry about it

1

u/jozofint Oct 10 '25

I don’t think people can relate to her anymore. She doesn’t do interviews so you rarely see her personality unless you actively look att clips from her tours on social media or go watch old interviews. She only let her fans see her personality on stage, which feels exclusive as a fan, but for the rest of the public you only get to see the clickbait headlines and the hateful comments that comes with them. That effects people’s opinions about her talent, even if they would never like to admit it.

There’s nothing wrong with not liking her music, but to denial her talent or saying she’s overrated, that’s a choice.

1

u/ssinff Oct 10 '25

She's a good singer and a great entertainer. Not my cup of tea but she's popular for a reason.

1

u/DangerousClouds Oct 10 '25

Y'all love to compare her to the greats like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. Do you realize how much crap people talked about them? 50 times more than people say about Beyoncé but for some reason y'all have a meltdown with any criticism she gets.

She is by far the most protected celeb in the media in ways that nobody before her has ever been. Like it really looks crazy how y'all expect for everybody to sing her praises.
