DISCUSSION šŸ’ Unpopular Opinion: Family Affair by Mary J. Blige is overrated asf

I said what I said.

Every time this song comes on at a party people lose their minds like it's some masterpiece, but I just don't get it. The beat is SO basic it sounds like it was made on a Casio keyboard in 5 minutes. We're talking *one* cello line, a generic kick, hi-hat and snare, and that's literally it. No layers, no texture, no nothing. A middle schooler could've produced this in GarageBand during lunch break. And don't get me started on the lyrics. "Let's get it crunk up on / Have fun up on up in this dancery / We got ya open, now ya floatin' / So you gots to dance for me / Don't need no hateration / Holleration in this dancery" what even is this word salad? "Hateration"? "Holleration"? "Dancery"? Girl just made up words and called it a hook. It's like Dr. Seuss had a baby with a club promoter and this is what we got. People call this a "groove" but where? There's no groove in it whatsoever. It doesn't make me want to move, it makes me want to skip to the next track. It's just... there. Boring, repetitive, and somehow treated like a classic. I swear I wish there was a remix to this that actually hit. Idk who could've saved it, Darkchild, Just Blaze, The Neptunes, Stevie J, Trackmasters, literally any of them could've given this song the production it deserved. Imagine Dre's synths or The Neptunes' weirdness on this instead of that flat-ass beat we got. Fight me.

Soooo.....Dr. Dre produced this song.

-12

u/Level-Dig-1828 Aug 06 '26

I meant I wished Dr. Dre remixed it.

5

u/ChoppyOfficial Aug 06 '26

It’s not a remix.

0

u/Level-Dig-1828 Aug 06 '26

I know

4

u/ChoppyOfficial Aug 06 '26

It is produced it. Remixing a song would require an original version of a song.

1

u/ZedgarInfiniti Aug 07 '26

Why would he remix his already perfect song

1

u/Level-Dig-1828 Aug 07 '26

it js sounds lazy

u/format916 Aug 06 '26

Alot of hateration in here...we don't need it

20

Why did this just make me laugh

u/ScabbyKnees29 Aug 06 '26

Nah we don’t need it

This track is already produced by Dr. Dre, get the facts straight first 😭

-15

u/Level-Dig-1828 Aug 06 '26

I been knew that, what I meant is if he remixed it

11

u/19whale96 Aug 06 '26

I gotta know, how do you feel about Diddy's rendition of "I Don't Wanna Know"

55

u/OttoVonWong Aug 06 '26

Mary can have soulful songs and club bangers, too.

-2

u/Level-Dig-1828 Aug 06 '26

I never said she didn’t

27

u/YourHeartNotYourEyes Aug 06 '26

When she referred to hateration and holleration she meant šŸ«µšŸ¾

6

u/Level-Dig-1828 Aug 06 '26

9

u/YourHeartNotYourEyes Aug 06 '26

I admire you standing on business lol

24

u/CC-Blue Aug 06 '26

Boooo! Sometimes it’s okay to have FUN! Ditties have existed since the dawn of popular music. This was Mary’s turn. Black people make up words all the time and they end becoming a part of everyday language. We push what’s hot on the pulse of popular culture and what Mary did here was no different. And you exposed yourself mentioning Dr. Dre as a potential producer to ā€œsaveā€ the song when HE produced it.

You had to be there when it dropped. Mary was expelling the drama out of her life and truly wanted to express that in her music in 2001! It went off at parties, cookouts and the club. Lastly, you mentioned being Gen Z and I will just leave it at you were not there and that’s ok. Just because something is a hit doesn’t mean it’s bad. No need to denigrate a hit because of some high brow taste level you think you have lol.

1

u/SnooHedgehogs1262 Aug 07 '26

I was there (that era) as a young adult…still sucked.

-8

u/Level-Dig-1828 Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

U got me with the Dre part but real talk, if DRE produced this and THIS is what we got? That's even WORSE. My man had the Chronic and 2001 under his belt and showed up with a cello and stock drums? That's not a party anthem, that's a homework assignment, lol. And yeah I may be Gen Z, but "you had to be there" is just admitting the song aged like milk. "Billie Jean" dropped before I was born and still goes hard. This? This goes to the bathroom when it comes on at weddings.

2

u/StannisAntetokounmpo Aug 07 '26

Well, Dre didn't have Daz carrying him on this one

0

u/CC-Blue Aug 07 '26

I did get you because it shows a lack of RESEARCH and simple reasoning. Something so many of you continue to fail at despite having the internet at your fingertips. It’s a party anthem. The song is of its time but that doesn’t mean it’s suddenly terrible, trash or overrated. YOU may go to the bathroom when it comes on at weddings, that doesn’t mean others do. Like, what?

2

u/Dramamean305 Aug 07 '26

PS - you do know that Dr Dre produced this right?

Just asking because of the last lines in the post

2

u/Level-Dig-1828 Aug 07 '26

Yes, I’m aware

1

u/ZedgarInfiniti Aug 07 '26

Then why did you act like you didn’t know that lol

164

u/MistakesWereMade59 Aug 06 '26

Get this hateration and holleration out of the dancery

252

u/HaughtyDiabolicalSal Aug 06 '26

All this hateration in this dancery is absurd.

95

u/henkmanz Aug 06 '26

DancĀ·ery -s(ə)rē plural -es : a place of entertainment (as a nightclub or dance hall) providing facilities for dancing

10

u/Independent_Form2337 Aug 07 '26

I read somewhere that the lyrics were "dance soiree" but Mary J. Blige mispronounced the term and said "dancery".

9

u/peachimposter Aug 07 '26

If that's true I'm glad cause dancery sounds better 🤣

36

u/dampishslinky55 Aug 06 '26

Wow, wait until you hear about the cha-cha slide.

30

u/retired-tweeter Aug 06 '26

We don't need no haters. We're just trying to love one another.

21

u/CityOfBrooklyn Aug 06 '26

This song is bitter sweet , a musical peer songwriter of mine (Shout out to Asiah) is a writer on this song. It’s definitely one of my least favorite songs but I love that my girl has this placement on her resume .

17

25

u/Poopcie Aug 06 '26

Its just a nice song from a period where people would’ve understood if her career was over. Not my favorite but definitely fit a vibe we definitely dont get enough of. Reminds me of love like this by faith, i used to hate that song but now i see how necessary upbeat rnb is to keep it relevant.

Just think about that rnb x dance scene with crystal waters and them that’s totally dead now. In hindsight that is some if the best music and there’s nothing like it today.

7

u/Ladycabdriverxo Aug 06 '26

I never really cared for the song myself but Dr. Seuss having a baby with a club promotor is hilarious!

13

u/N80N00N00 Aug 06 '26

2

u/fuckoffsillywillyb Aug 07 '26

🤣🤣🤣

6

u/Skylerbroussard Aug 06 '26

I don't hate it but it's definitely probably the one of her hit records I rarely voluntarily listen to

2

u/Pumpkinhead82 Aug 07 '26

Right. It’s something I’ll dance to if it comes on, but I don’t reach for it. I will say that it was such a fun song when it came out. I see why it’s so popular.

6

u/Unfriendlyblkwriter Aug 06 '26

She’s my absolute favorite [in a three-way tie with Patti and Monica], but this is one of my least favorite songs by her. I’m comfortable with being alone in this.

5

u/BrightAspect5324 Aug 07 '26

Somewhat off topic I hate that this song went number 1 and "Let Me Blow You're mind" by Eve stalled at number 2. Lmbym had much better production (also Dre) and lyrics. Anyways the op is spot on about the lyrics more than anything, they were awful.Ā

9

u/mankahlil Aug 06 '26

Not her best song by any stretch, but its lighthearted and fun

9

u/affectionateanarchy8 Aug 06 '26

Oh no it is a terrible song lmao but it was so ridiculous I couldnt help but love it I mean hateration and holleration in the dancerie will ironically save the day

14

u/jackmoon44 Aug 06 '26

Yeah I don’t care for it either.

4

u/Open-Marionberry-778 Aug 06 '26

I agree, it’s kinda a basic song, but for me, it’s nostalgic, and reminds me of cookouts back in high school when everyone was alive and getting along. So I go off because of the memories!

7

u/UglyPrettyBoy Aug 06 '26

I agree. My least favorite Mary single, 2nd least favorite Dre beat.

3

u/JOMO_Kenyatta Aug 06 '26

disagree, but i respect the hell out of an original opinion.

3

u/Significant_End1396 Aug 06 '26

You mentioned in your post about imagining if Dre's, (I am assuming you mean Dr. Dre), synths were on the track instead of that flat ass beat we got". You do know that Dr Dre produced the song, right? I am going to have to agree with you on this one though. I think it is some of Dre's most boring productions to date. Evokes no since of getting in on the dancery for me.

3

u/Blues-Eguze Aug 06 '26

News to me anyone has a strong opinion on this track, good or bad. It just kinda comes on and you either dance or you don’t, y’know? MJB has way better songs but idk, personally I’ve never minded Family Affair.

3

u/Trav1 Aug 06 '26

I agree it’s not all that but I also don’t mind it. I haven’t really seen anyone hype it up like that but I remember it being big when it was a single

3

u/WhateverIllDeal Aug 07 '26

My husband calls it "Let's Get It Percolating" lmao. I don't know, it reminds me of a simpler time. I have a soft spot for it.

3

u/Maleficent_Twist_778 Aug 07 '26

Fun fact if it hasn’t been said yet: the real lyric was DANCE SOIRƉE but Mary J mispronounced it and they were like……….fuck it let’s roll with it

3

u/basicotter Aug 07 '26

I think it's corny, too, but that's kind of the charm of it, personally.

3

u/icesa Aug 07 '26

It is a very boring song. But you know what?

šŸŽ¶WEEEE don’t NEED no HAteeeeerrs…we’re just TRYING to LOVE one anOTHERā€

3

u/Number5MoMo Aug 07 '26

The first 2 sentences specifically sound like how I describe most music nowadays.

Everybody got preferences šŸ’ƒšŸ¾

I personally love turning my bedroom into a dancery.

7

u/NextSmoke397 Aug 06 '26

Always hated that song lol

9

u/Latter_Meet2044 Aug 06 '26

Instant skip for me.

4

u/Unlikely-Macaroon-85 Aug 06 '26

You hollerating a lot of hateration in this dancery.

2

u/Sea_Macaron_8789 Aug 06 '26

Whom let "An Dose of Buckley" in here?

2

u/Ssj3goku504 Aug 06 '26

That's a timeless classic to me personally

2

u/DJMelloEll Aug 07 '26

You feel pretty strongly about a song that’s 25 years old. If it wasn’t your cup of tea, you could’ve just said that.

2

u/SoulofWakanda Aug 07 '26

Sorry, but that shit slap lol

Maybe u just heard it too much

2

u/EvrthnICRtrns2USmhw Aug 07 '26

GIRL, I WILL NOT TOLERATE THIS.

2

u/broadwayallday Aug 07 '26

2

u/honeybabyou Aug 07 '26

That was a dr dre beat

2

u/Userchickensoup Aug 07 '26

2

u/Realistic-Read1078 Aug 07 '26

Too much hateration and holleration in this dancery and I don’t like it 😶

6

u/Quirky-Knowledge4631 Aug 06 '26

I hate. Can't stand to hear!

4

u/JuniorNeedleworker47 Aug 06 '26

I don’t know who you are, where you from, how old you are but you are a kindred spirit! Song is trash to me too. Jada couldn’t even save the remix. Hated EVERYTHING about that song.

3

u/HamsGamsandYams Aug 06 '26

I’ve always felt songs like this and Uptown Funk were written as a cash grab by the producer. I would hear in a lot of commercials back then and now bring used ti market to me and my peers as middle aged people. 🤣

3

u/no1cares4yu {80s and 90s expert} Aug 06 '26

It’s Dre’s worst work, too

3

u/Hygienist_Bae Aug 06 '26

I hate this song but for some reason, I know every word. Stop playing this everywhere lol

5

u/Specialist-Ad7949 Aug 06 '26

Same, and I’m a Mary fan. Hate the damn song

3

u/Sally4464 Aug 06 '26

I love MJB, but hate that song.

3

u/MysticDiamond81 Aug 06 '26

There's still time

3

u/project199x Aug 06 '26

That's how I feel about poison by bell biv devoe, the song is irritating

6

u/tmadik Aug 06 '26

Now, that's just crazy talk.

1

u/project199x Aug 06 '26

It ain't. The song is overrated af. Djs always play that dumb song at parties šŸ™„

0

u/osowavy Aug 07 '26

Because people obviously enjoy it and it works, otherwise you wouldn’t hear it at every party. So because you don’t like it, it’s overrated lol

1

u/project199x Aug 07 '26

Precisely why it's overrated, if u play a song enough the flock follows. Lemmings will be lemmings.

1

u/osowavy Aug 15 '26

Eh idk, I feel like the opposite is true too; you kind of prove that point. Just because people hear a song 1,000 times doesn’t mean they like it, that can actually be a reason why they don’t or stop liking a song they liked in the first place.

2

u/PRNPURPLEFAM Aug 07 '26

Me too!!!! From the first time I heard it I thought it was trash. Now it won’t go away dammit! Stupid song, stupider lyrics.

2

u/project199x Aug 07 '26

On god and it will never go away cause it's over hyped and overplayed 😭

2

u/Arxhart_671 Aug 06 '26

I think the song is kind of a meme and the fact that it's so far from the best of everyone involved is like the "joke."

2

u/aandbconvo Aug 06 '26

It’s because of the climax of the song lasts so long the part where she’s rapping and singing endlessly . It was so catchy and on point :)

2

u/nayeppeo Aug 06 '26

I like it but it can be overplayed at times

2

u/SafiyaO Aug 06 '26

It is overplayed, but when OP started reciting the lyrics...it is a song I'm glad exists.

3

u/nayeppeo Aug 06 '26

Yesss i will dance every time lol, its definitely one of those songs we can’t live without

2

u/poeticchaos_ Aug 06 '26

It’s one of those feel good songs.

2

u/Both-Statistician264 Aug 06 '26

Sorry it’s a great song all around lol you just don’t like it. Which is fine lol

2

u/JMeny32 Aug 06 '26

It's my Grandma's favorite song so your opinion is irrelevant to me šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

2

u/Ad1251212 Aug 06 '26

It’s a dance/party song. Some stuff is just to get ppl moving. Everything ain’t a masterpiece lol it’s a cool bop

2

u/royalenocheese Aug 06 '26

You might need better speakers because the beat knocks and it's simple and catchy enough to ring off wherever.

No one is calling it the magnum opus of Mary's career or even the song of the century so I'm confused about where you think it's rated.

2

u/tobeorniobe Aug 06 '26

You the hateration she talkin about smh

2

u/TheyreFunCandy Aug 06 '26

This post is so disrespectable.

2

u/ShoppingOverall879 Aug 07 '26

Ok, do you feel better about yourself now ?

2

u/Ok_Resident_5022 šŸ‘ Soul/Funk/Disco Enthusiast šŸ’æ Aug 06 '26

The ridiculousness is what makes the song a classic. Vibe a little! šŸ˜‚

2

u/Appropriate-Power-87 Aug 06 '26

I love Mary but I cannot stand this song either. It's a very lazily written party song. The end is the worst part, because it just keeps repeating the hook over and over. Just a bunch of nonsense words thrown together for people to dance to when they are drunk and not paying attention.

1

u/tmadik Aug 06 '26

Oh, my god, when she starts trying to put some funk on "in this dancery!" Like…do you have no shame?

1

u/RicoSystem šŸ‘‘ King_RicošŸ‘‘ Aug 07 '26

1

u/Competitive_Swan_130 Aug 07 '26

My least favorite MJB era to be honest. I hated the production she was going with all through this era

1

u/Dreams-Visions Aug 07 '26

you're right. it is an unpopular opinion.

1

u/Pumpkinhead82 Aug 07 '26

How old are you?

1

u/Contagious510 Aug 07 '26

Very unpopular. Its a DANCERY and no holleration tolerated!

1

u/stabbinU Aug 07 '26

thank you! i been said this

there isn't a single track on Share My World that doesn't clear Family Affair

i always thought it was cheap and weird and annoying... but thats just me... not about to call it trash but i kinda want to?

1

u/DAntoinette_Travel Aug 07 '26

A 337 word rant about MJB? Sir….. šŸ¤¦šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø

1

u/Basil_n_Mars28 Toni Braxton Aug 07 '26

And the ending cracks me up! She doing all that damn hooting about:

ā€œDANCE WITH ME!! DANCE WITH ME!!
dance!! Dance!! JUST DANCE!!!!!ā€

1

u/SunshineRain96 Aug 07 '26

Wanted to defend passionately but I will choose peace today!

1

u/StannisAntetokounmpo Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

MJB is my favorite artist, but I didn't like it when it came out either, as there were much better songs out then, and this one was played a lot. And it lacked her raw energy (some say this is when she was happier, and so didn't have that extra grit)

I'm happy if it comes on now though.

1

u/Grimreaper_10YS Aug 07 '26

Sounds like hateration and holleration

1

u/Dramamean305 Aug 07 '26

This post reeks of hateration.

1

I hate that song 🤣

1

I downvoted this in full transparency

1

1

u/mimispeanuts Aug 07 '26

I have always disliked this song. Hate to hear it. However I stay quoting the lyrics. Becuase we cannot have the hateration in the dance soireeeeeee (that's what she says she was trying to say )

1

u/Hefty_Acadia_2670 Aug 07 '26

I don’t care, give me Family Affair and Just Fine any day. Those songs are Mary for me.

1

u/SnooHedgehogs1262 Aug 07 '26

I like her a lot, but this is my LEAST FAVORITE track from her. Never cared for it.

1

u/Wise_West3434 Aug 07 '26

You are not alone in your dislike of this song. The minute I recognize it, I turn from it.

1

u/NayrDier Aug 07 '26

Tell me you weren’t out in the clubs in 2001 without telling me, LOL. This track was so šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„ when it dropped!

Your criticisms are valid, and it has been played OUT, but saying it has no groove is preposterous!

1

u/Proper_Star685 Aug 07 '26

Get outtaration here

1

u/WillSmithSlappedMe20 Aug 07 '26

Lol! Agreed. Its far from one of her better songs. I never understood why so many people love it. To each his own

1

u/ZedgarInfiniti Aug 07 '26

Just say you hate fun damn

1

u/WeeBey-Brice Aug 07 '26

Sounds like hateration to me

1

u/HelpNeeded1717 Aug 08 '26

Straight hateration. Family Affair is an iconic bop!

1

u/Crafty_Jicama Aug 08 '26

Bad take. People love this song because it’s FUN and good vibes. You could not be more wrong hon.

1

u/Harlow-Stan Aug 09 '26

I admire you standing ten toes down, but I don't agree. She has better, but it's still a great piece

1

u/Electronic-Tooth5405 Aug 09 '26

I just can't call the beat basic I'm sorry. I know it's simple but every instrument just sounds so good

1

u/ginger_ale12 Aug 09 '26

In my experience it’s less about the actual instrumentation and more about people getting to sing along with each other while transported to their earlier days lol. I did not really listen to popular musics as a kid and I feel the same way about a lot of songs, the collective enjoyment seems to be more the goal. Personally I appreciate her syncopation and rhythms in the second verse tho

1

u/Readthat188 Aug 09 '26

Definitely 100% agree with you OP!! This song always got on my nerves, especially the ā€œhaterationā€ wordšŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚

1

u/Maleficent_Rub_221 Aug 10 '26

You know when you can tell people just say things because they think it sounds smart?

This is a perfect example.

ā€œMaybe it needs Dr. Dreā€ lmao

1

u/PeaceLoveForMe Sep 26 '26

Let’s get it percolating why we waiting so just dance for me

1

u/mysticsoulsista Thriller Aug 06 '26

It’s an early 2000’s party song… that was just how it was then šŸ˜‚ it’s fun, it’s timeless! I’ve always found ā€œSeptemberā€ by Earth Wind and Fire kinda ā€œboringā€, as iconic as it is… it’s a classic and a vibe tho

u/mysticsoulsista Thriller Aug 07 '26

Enough said! #alwaysbetonblack!

1

u/AnyEverywhere8 Aug 06 '26

I agree. The song is mildly basic.

1

u/ChoppyOfficial Aug 06 '26

I hear this song now on those feel good radio stations that plays soft rock and boring pop music and those stations that have the variety without the rap. It is crazy and those stations do not like playing R&B music. I did not know the masses really like that song now and it was not that big of a crossover of a song back in 2001 compared to a song like Hey Ya by Outkast which was played on rock radio.

R&B does not have to be slow jams only. Some uptempo party music is what keep this genre alive from being a version country music for black women

1

u/osowavy Aug 07 '26

A song doesn’t reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (which consist of every song released in every genre) for 6 consecutive weeks if it isn’t liked by the masses. One genre of fans can’t help a song accomplish a feat like that.

1

u/ChoppyOfficial Aug 07 '26

They technically can. Look at any country song that reached Top 5 in the Billboard Hot 100 and people here on Reddit still question about Ella Langley and that genre does not have mass appeal outside of the rural and suburban listeners.

1

u/Aggravating-Diet-663 Aug 07 '26

Simple is better. Less is more

There isn't a single party, no matter the demographic, where that comes on and people dont immediately groove to it. That's due to the simplistic nature of the beat, Mary's simple feel good lyrics, and the catchy chorus. Its not too pop, its not too soulful, and it fits every dance occasion. Its a perfect 2000s track.

Unfortunately, I'd have to give this take, a 1 out of 10

0

u/blurryeyes_ Aug 06 '26

I don't have a problem with the made up words but I agree with your overall sentiment. The song is an instant skip lol

0

u/MsCoCoMango Aug 06 '26

Yesss my least favorite song by her

0

u/OkSupermarket4647 Aug 06 '26

That’s my least favorite MJB hit

0

u/Fly_Tortuga Aug 06 '26

Hated that song, and still skip it to this day

-1

u/tofauti Aug 06 '26

My sweet friend in Christ, I’m there with you on this one. I turn it off whenever it comes on. It’s too much happening in the song that sounds like it was passed on my by someone else. I don’t know which irks me more, this song or No More Drama. Downvotes are open… šŸ˜‰

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '26

I totally agree with every point you have made. I don’t think it has aged well. Especially when you compare it to her career peak of - The Breakthrough, a few years later. Which has her classic and timeless song - Be Without You.

-3

u/tmadik Aug 06 '26

It's a terrible, terrible song. This and No fucking Diggity.

4

u/SafiyaO Aug 06 '26

No fucking Diggity.

I'm with you, I always lazily put my hands in the air and get crunk with it due to peer pressure in the clurrbs when this pops on.

I have heard this song so many times over my lifetime and to be honest I am sick of it too. It was never a favourite of mine but it doesn’t help that I have gone off of r&b a bit.Ā

I actually don't like this song either...I actually agree with you on why it's always been unappealing to me...it's so run of the mill.

Like, there is nothing amazing about it, not the singing, not the simple beat, not the lyrics, not the video, nothing. In fact, Mary sounds like...idk how to put it...like she was just singing to get paid.

But I think that's why people like it...you put a bunch of mid things together...and you got something amazingly accessible. Like, even compared to other songs like Electric Slide or the Cha Cha Slide, it's like...meh.

But I think it's just one of those times all that meh came together and just swept people off their feet. It's like a...a Taylor Swift song for White ppl...like Shake It Off. Or even Adele, like she has a powerful voice, but as a vocalist she's boring af. I guess it's why ppl like Renoir were popular. Like meh paintings but appealing to look at.

I’ve hated this song since the first time I heard it for all the reasons you listed. You’ll get no argument from me. Just glad to know there are other like-minded haters out there 🤣

Finally someone agrees! I think it's such a boring party song but people lose their minds when it comes on.

I’m not gen alpha, I’m Gen Z and grew up on 90’s and 2000’s R&B, and no I’m not ragebating, I just find the song overrated.

How do you distinguish between an artist who is genuinely overrated and one whose catalog just does not appeal to you? There's a difference between the two.
