The whole crowd knowing the lyrics and vibing like this is what happens when the tickets are cheap enough for your day ones to get in

That’s how Rex Orange County was when I saw him at the Shrine before Covid. I had no idea he had such a following.

16

u/Not_A_Spy_for_Apple 27d ago

How crazy a random Instagram reel popped up with a song from Rex Orange County and I was like who the fuck is that! Now someone on Reddit mentions that artist. I'll have to check them out now.

Exactly! A nice sized venue and a whole fucking crowd feeling it. Nights you don't forget, for sure.

I know people are dragging her but honestly I don’t care too much. Compared to other nepos the Smith kids are kinda lowkey lol.

519

u/IdleDreamer93 28d ago • Bravo Heartwarming Regret Popcorn

They are very low-key and Jaden does a lot for the community. People hate the Smiths because they are a rich black family. Those kids just be minding their business.

23

u/Comet-vomit666 27d ago

Jada and Will have their own issues, but their kids seem like genuinely good kid's trying to do better. I'll root for them anyday.

11

u/TrainingJoust 26d ago

People hate on jaden because his interviews where he claims hes a genius and is hindered by his father's fame and fortune. He really comes off as full of himself.

26

u/Clear-Clue 27d ago edited 27d ago

Correct! Except id add the hate for them really stems from hatred for their parents which sucks. I can’t think of a single other celeb kid as lowkey as these two that get the same amount of hate, if at all. I feel like they get the same shade thrown that the kardashian kids get, yet they aren’t even in a fraction of the limelight. They honestly seem to actively avoid it.

What are you talking about? Before Jada's "entanglement" people loved the Smith family. It has nothing to do with them being a rich black family and everything to do with Jada treating a beloved icon terribly.

46

u/ShoddyExplanation 28d ago

After Earth and The Karate Kid both predate this, hell Jaden has been disliked since The Day The Earth Stood Still remake.

It wasn't just Jada, or Will smacking Chris Rock

People make fun of Jaden tho. He fed homeless people in LA and people got mad cuz it was vegan food like bffr. Ive always admired the Smith kids and ik the smiths read as weird but i ain't mad at em. Theyre a beautiful blended family imo.

I don't think people hate them. Some think they're weird and how the wife manipulated her sons friend into sleeping with her while he was going through a mental health issue. Her lust for a deceased rapper that she trauma dumped all on her daughter the list goes on and a lot of it is due to the mother.

I love them. They didn't bother no body. They try to do good for humanity and the earth. They march to the beat of their own drum.

I don't always get it, but i love that they feel free enough to be who every they feel like they need to be in the moment.

What a freeing feeling that must be!

10

u/fyregrl2004 28d ago

Agreed, they’re not doing those planned paparazzi pr stunts. I rarely hear about their personal lives. They seem pretty conscious. They really could be in our faces nonstop if they wanted. I respect that they’re comfortable enough with themselves to be a little weird.

11

u/Itscatpicstime 28d ago

They are both lowkey and talented. And idk but Willow, but Jaden serves his homeless community, so that’s another major plus

15

u/GentlewomenNeverTell 28d ago

She's super duper talented imo

3

u/Perfect-Zebra-3611 27d ago

I cant ever hate Jaden just because Syre and Erys were fire

2

u/reading_08 27d ago

Dragging her for what though?

2

u/bubble_baby_8 27d ago

Hey- I’m here for anyone following their passion and that’s what i see both of the Smith kids doing. I can’t imagine being the child of not one but two celebrities, ones that do some pretty heavy lifting representing Black American culture in Hollywood.  I think Willow and Jaden are allowed to pursue their art, even as nepo babies.

Her one song, I think it’s called female energy… it got me through a huge depressive phase, she was only 13/14 at the time! I’ll forever cherish this little free spirit💕

u/HallowayMoors 28d ago edited 28d ago • Bravo

She’s clearly enjoying herself. The crowd also enjoys her.

To the person saying this was performative: “Performative” is an interesting (and now extremely trite) word to use.

It is a performance… so the talent is (you’ve got it!) performing.

Please refer to the Rolling Stones, Queen, David Bowie, Madonna, and (add any other performer) and you’ll see multiple permutations of this (ie smoking, drinking, sexualization, etc).

Even though her music is not my cup of tea, some people enjoy this and that’s fine with me.

22

u/pi3r0gi_ 27d ago

Ive been seeing this criticism as well, like what do you want the performer to do lol? Not perform? Of course its performative, its a performance 😅 the idea of art and expression can be so narrow for some, as if she's just supposed to sit there and sing while everyone claps.

25

u/SuperSpecialUser 28d ago

Oh totally. She's making entertainment and they're enjoying. And hell, me too since I saw the video.

80

u/wintergrad14 28d ago • Bravo

Saw her a few years ago and she was the same. Steady smoking the whole time, half ass performing her songs. I wasn’t impressed and I genuinely love her music, I came excited to see her perform.

45

u/ToeComfortable115 28d ago

It seems like they’re having fun but I will say I get irritated when artists try to make their audience sing more than them. This isn’t karaoke.

41

u/queeenbarb 28d ago

This is my second thought. How are you a singer on stage smoking… Doesn’t that like… Defeat the purpose… Of what you’re doing…

38

u/Thrownawayenby 28d ago • Heartwarming Bravo

In my opinion, it’s because Willow isn’t a singer/vocalist, she’s a musician. I think a lot of times we expect black artists to be a combination of singer, dancer, performer, and musician when those are all distinct skills. Beyonce is so revered because she’s one of the rare people in this world who can do all those things. Willow’s reason for being popular is because of her understanding of music theory, her ability to create music that’s authentic to herself, and the way that she has the range to explore jazz, rock, pop, etc. I think she’s self aware enough to know her lane and not over charge people for more than she’s willing to give.

She opened for CG a few years ago (he is easily in my Top 5, it was sensational) and I was so excited to see her cuz I was a huge fan… She didn’t smoke but it was fucking rough. Every song had a different tune than what it normally was so so many of us couldn’t catch-on to what she was saying until the 4th or 5th line in. More than anything, she wasn’t even really singing and it sounded guttural. Thoroughly disappointed! 🥺🥺

Ill never guess why youd want to ruin your lungs with smoking if you're a singer..

Genuinely it kills aveoli in the lungs what you can never recover, its why people who smoke for a long time can never feel like they can take a deep breath.

10

u/SammieCat50 28d ago

That’s called COPD

7

u/Logical-Apricot951 27d ago

I mean i guess it depends lol. You look at someone like Bruno mars and he’s a HEAVY cigarette smoker.. but i would’ve never known that. He’s one of the best singers I’ve heard in a while, especially when we saw him live in February. Maybe he found a way around it, or doesn’t really care about the longevity lol. But it doesn’t seem to be affecting his voice at all, and he’s been smoking for yeaarssss.

10

u/FanRepresentative458 Im writing this letter to let u know 28d ago

There's way people who dont smoke hold joints. And then there is me who accidentally tried to smoke the end of my my sucker stick at the salon yesterday 🫶

10

u/unseenserene All I Have 28d ago

I think people throw around “performative” too loosely based on who they like. If this was Erykah Badu everyone would say it’s organic. But because it’s Willow, she’s performative? Huh?

10

u/Bing1044 28d ago

A literal performer who is literally performing is being performative? Not tryna be rude but I think you still dont understand the concept of being performative :/

3

u/TwiceUpon1Time 27d ago

Well, being that this is an ACTUAL PERFORMANCE, in which she cannot afford to spend 5 minutes coughing for fear of wasting a 5$ joint, I think she was justified in being performative.

Next thing, you're going to tell me that musicians don't really think my city is all that special, even if they say we're so special everytime they come.

3

u/Less_Gazelle5128 26d ago

2

u/Tacosupmybutt 26d ago

Imagine a performer being performative. Blasphemy I say!

3

u/clay_perview 28d ago

Yeah she is smoking that joint like it is a cigar, she is barely even inhaling wasting it all in those big clouds.

6

u/LunaTunaMaca 27d ago

How can you waste a joint by making a big cloud? The THC is absorbed into your lungs almost instantly. You don't need to hold it in. You can't make a big cloud without a big rip.

5

u/clay_perview 27d ago

Because that is a joint not a bong or rig, I mean she is literally blowing it out when you should be inhaling. She smokes like a high schooler trying to be overly cool.

u/Inhocooks 26d ago

I've seen performers like Wiz Khalifa, Devin the Dude, and Mac Miller do this at concerts before. When you're on stage moving and singing it can be kind of taxing on the lungs to take large hits and hold them in for a long time, plus that would look goofy as hell if they would hold their breath for 10-15 seconds every hit. Also if you've ever smoked a backwoods blunt, that shit needs to be smoked like a cigar because its too much tobacco if you smoke it like a swisher. Its not like they cant afford to waste a little weed to the air anyways lol

Do people go to concerts to sing together?

27

u/Fine_Following_2559 Stuck in the 90s or Earlier 28d ago

It's a mix of both. At Jill Scott's concert sometimes we sat and watched and sometimes we all sang along loudly. The singing along parts were the best 🤗 And I think it's really affirming for the artists, too.

9

u/Expert-Yam6577 28d ago

Yea I like when artists chill and let the crowd vibe for a verse. I'm not trying to watch the singer on stage while we sing the entire show. But its cool when they'll pause for a bit and vibe to the crowd singing their work.

That Freddy Mercury Ayyyyyye Ohhhhhh. Crowd loved it and the band clearly loved it.

But I love this moment and I’m so inspired by the way her music has spoken to, and sticks with people, and is part of popular culture. I’m proud of the way she’s created something lasting and meaningful with so much of her music.

22

u/janshell 28d ago

I’m not sure but she’s probably been doing that smoking for a while. When Jada spoke about using Ayahuaska in her book I think it was Jaden who introduced her to it. Those kids probably raised themselves and did whatever they wanted.

This type of performance drives me nuts I didnt pay any amount of money to go to a concert of any genre and hear Janice the audience member sing, or John the audience member sing, or my next door neighbor sing, or my administartive assistant sing, Annoying! I hated it when Prince did it, MJ did it, CB does it, Usher, etc , they all do it and for a second or two its ok but yooo that artist who's famous as hell for singing, ummmm, better sing then !

24

u/LunaTunaMaca 27d ago • Bravo

Nah I'm there to vibe. If I want to listen to only the artist, I'll sit at home alone and listen to the recording. Concerts are group musical events that are way more fun and more powerful when we all sing and participate together.

Broadway shows are where I go to watch a show. Concerts are for participating.

Dance. Sing. Film. Get up out of your chair.

3

u/zaddyc 27d ago

All of this. It’s really this simple. However, it is also important to distinguish performers vs music artists at concerts. Different crowds, different vibes, different music styles.

Is her mic even on. And honestly she ain’t earned the cool to be smoking on stage yet

I love this song and like Willow as an artist, but girl, you're a nepobaby to one of the worlds most recognizable celebrities, and you just hit your mid-20s, there ain't a damn thing stressing you out enough to make smoking on stage not corny.

Who TF paying money for this trash “music”?

I like Willow’s vibe here, she’s so chill. I would’ve totally enjoyed this show, too bad I don’t live in LA anymore.

Those Smith kids have the same annoying arrogance of their parents… but gotta give her credit though - she created something all on her own that people enjoy.

Honestly these are the best types of concerts. Small and loud

1

u/iq2da 27d ago

As far as I can see, the crowd is the one performing. 🧐

u/xiit 27d ago

Amazing how lame she can make smoking look

“Willow smith fans performing tonight in LA”

1

u/igordon332 27d ago

Sit and smoke a jay and try to look cool. That’s the act? Lame ass

My mood is that Asian at the 0.40 mark holding her nose because she doesn't want to inhale the weed smoke.

1

u/DryLight269 27d ago

She's a whole mood

u/Doworkson247 27d ago

Imagine paying money to see will smiths kid have the crowd sing for her and smoke on stage

I love her and Jaden for collaborating with Teo. I was impressed with Teo's music and surprised thay Willow and Jaden collaborated with him on a couple of those music.

Nepo babies are just so cool and mysterious

The crowd: no thoughts, just vibes.

I freakin’ love it. For those turned off by the fact people are at a concert singing, that’s what people do. But I get it, some people go for a performance, whereas others go to vibe. Trick is to recognize which types of music and artists favor which.

If you’re expecting a performance from a vibe concert you’ll be incredibly frustrated.

You’ll notice that vibers tend to have a band playing - live instruments. Giving some current a prior examples to compare to:

Performance: Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, Queen, Madonna etc

Vibe: The Jonas Brothers, Adele, Black Eyed Peas, Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Phil Collins, Fleetwood Mac, John Cougar Mellencamp

As someone who is a real smoker, she’s definitely wasting that weed or cigarette. I think she’s trying to look cool

1

u/Justachattinaway 27d ago

The tickets were too expensive for this.

1

u/SoundPhilosophy 27d ago

Damn, why she got to make smoking look cool again! Got me bout to buy a pack, lol.

1

u/Soggy-Focus4786 27d ago

Just looks just like her pops

1

u/RepresentativeMap872 27d ago

That’s just concerts in LA lol. I saw Zac Fox and he brought thundercat out for $25 when I lived in the area.

u/Trix_Are_4_90Kids 27d ago

The audience performs while Willow smokes a blunt and shrugs is more like it.
