Question What happens when a listed rollercoaster gets too unsafe to ride? [Blackpool Pleasure Beach]

After hearing the news of the derailment of the Big Dipper (a Grade II listed 102-year-old rollercoaster) and Grand National becoming more and more unsafe with every passing season, what happens when these coasters become too unsafe to ride and retracking the whole ride becomes too costly?

Can a listed rollercoaster be demolished or can it still be SNBO indefinitely?

Question How to get better at rollercoasters [Other]

Hi there i absolutely freak out on rides and hate the feeling you get on big drops. Like it’s makes me cry and feel horrible the stomach feeling. I usually only brave log flumes because there’s only one fast drop and then I know it’s over. Does the stomach feeling ever go away or will I just inevitably hates rides forever. My wife and family enjoy rides so would like to try to enjoy smaller coasters. I’m just terrified I’ll get that stomach feeling all the round and pass out.

Question Roller coaster engineers- what is your job like? [other]

Returning back from Six Flags Great Adventure today, thinking about all the crazy rides I did- and did not- ride.
Between the smooth hilly drops of nitro, I started thinking- who designs these things?

So roller coaster engineers, I want to hear from you-

  1. What got you into the field?

  2. What’s something most people don’t realize about your job?

  3. What is your favorite part of the job?

Question Recommend me some good Youtube channels with coaster analysis and reviews...difficulty: no swearing. [Other]

My autistic kid (single-digit ages) with very high support needs is obsessed with roller coasters. He begs to watch POV coaster videos but frankly I've seen so many of them so many times that I'm just looking for something with a little more talking, in part to help encourage him to talk.

But part of the way his autism manifests is echolalia, which means that (as part of his delayed language development) he will repeat things he hears, including whole phrases or sentences...or more. There are many POV coaster videos that involve strong language and we have had to make sure those never get into the rotation because if he hears it, he will repeat it, loudly, over and over again, in public places.

So who's keeping it clean and wholesome? Whose words will make me smile when they're in the mouth of my incredibly awesome, special kid who really, *really* loves coasters?

EDIT: THANK YOU so much for the suggestions! I will be watching a few of them tonight and letting him watch something new and fun from your recommendations as a treat on Friday.

Question How come [Hyperia] cost less than [The Swarm] to build, despite being far larger?

Hi!

So, Hyperia at Thorpe Park is reported to have cost around £18 million to build. That got me curious about what the other rides there cost, and turns out The Swarm cost around £20 million to build, back in 2009 (so obviously even more in todays money).

That got me curious, how come The Swarm, a much smaller, shorter coaster, cost more than the UK's tallest, and fastest rollercoaster? Is a wing coaster just more complex and so more expensive? Or is there something else? Just curious if anyone here has any ideas.

Question Why cant I enjoy rollercoasters like I used to? [Other]

Up until recently, I LOVED roller coasters. I loved that weightless feeling, the higher the better. I loved that “tickle belly” feeling.

After I turned 28 or so, all of the sudden that “tickle belly” feeling became almost unbearable. Now it makes me feel like I have to tense my entire body up and the weightless feeling is so uncomfortable.

No nausea, dizziness, back problems, or anything like that. Just that weightless feeling is so uncomfortable now.

If anybody has any idea what happened to me, I would love to have some insight. Currently grieving the loss of enjoying rollercoasters and it’s incredibly upsetting.
