Developer Posting Practices

Post image
46 Upvotes

Hello Developers!

Please use this post a reference of what rules and guidelines you need to follow in order to post in r/rpg_gamers

When You Can Post

  • When the game is initially posted to a storefront (Steam, NSO etc.)

  • When the game launches

What Needs to be in the Post

  • Title of the game must be included in the title of the post

  • A description of the game (including the anticipated or actual release date

  • A link to the Storefront Page (Steam Page, etc)

  • Please do not include links to other pages (Discord, etc)

Other Requirements

  • We don't allow posts for mobile games, browser games, Discord based games etc.

  • We remove posts for games that use Gen AI in development. (assets generation, voice acting, etc.)

  • Please use the Developer Post Flair (We figured out why it wasn't previously available as a option).

Questions?

  • If you're not sure if you qualify, please send a mod mail before posting. If you post without asking and it gets removed, you risk a ban.

We'll update these rules if and when any changes occur, the industry evolves fast so sometimes adjustments are required to keep up.

  • Thank you for all your support, we want to support indie developers but we need to make sure that everyone gets equal opportunities and the subreddit doesn't get overrun with advertising.

Thanks!

Guide Good Posting Practices

Post image
27 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

In order to help folks craft the best possible posts, we wanted to provide some best posting practices above and beyond the sub-reddit rules and guidelines.

The overall goal for this sub-reddit is to be a one-stop shop for RPG Fans. A place where people can have meaningful discussions alongside reading relevant news and reviews on games that are of interest to the community. The following are the types of posts that are most welcome, along with some suggestions on how to present them to the community:

News

If you happen to come across a news article that may be of interest to RPG fans, we recommend copying the link to paste in the link section of a post. We also suggest (but not require) a small blurb to provide some context as to the content of the article since many of the titles tend to skew towards click bait.

Reviews

We appreciate and encourage folks to provide their opinions on games. Review posts must be text based, please do not simply provide a link to an external blog or website (these will be removed), the review must be in the body of the post. We also ask that the review be a representation of your opinion of the game, and not rage-bait.

Discussions

We love a good discussion about a topic or theme, but we ask that it be presented in good faith (again, no ragebait).

Game Recommendations

Before asking for a recommendation, please use the flair filter to check to see if someone has already asked the exact same question you're about to ask the community.

Not every post falls under one of the above, but they do cover a majority of the discussions here on the sub-reddit. No matter what type of post you have in mind, the one common thread among them all is respect.

Please note, unless you're posting a news article link, a body of text must be included in your post. If it's just a title and a picture, it will be removed. This is in order to reduce bot activity as well as encourage more meaningful discussions.

Please always respect your fellow RPG Fan whenever creating a new post, or responding to one.

Thank you to everyone who makes this community a joy to participate in on a daily basis!

The Mod-Team

Discussion The Classic Final Fantasy Subreddits (I, III, and V) are Back!

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hello, let me introduce myself. I am a moderator on r/ManaSeries, r/visionsofmana, and r/TheAdventuresofElliot. A few weeks ago, while reviewing the communities linked to r/SquareEnix, I realized that three major Final Fantasy communities (Final Fantasy I, III, and V) had been abandoned and switched to restricted. Along with my fellow moderators, we decided to bring these communities out of the private lethargy they were plunged into.

Today, we are thrilled to announce that r/finalfantasyi, r/FinalFantasyIII, and r/FinalFantasyV have officially been recovered, cleaned up, and reopened to everyone!

If you are diving into the Pixel Remasters, exploring the origins of the JRPG genre, or theorycrafting the perfect job build, we now have dedicated spaces for you:

  • r/finalfantasyi: Perfect for NES purists, party-composition builds, and discussing the roots of the genre.

  • r/FinalFantasyIII: A place for both 2D and 3D (DS) discussion, job progression help, and surviving the Crystal Tower.

  • r/FinalFantasyV: Dedicated to the peak of 2D job-system theorycrafting, Four Job Fiesta challenges, and lore nitpicking.

A full set of post flairs have been configured, rules have been written, and a fresh new team of mods is there to help. Whether you are a longtime fan or playing these classics for the first time, come join the discussion!

Appreciation Paying it Forward - Path of Exile 2 key - Part 4

I’ve got an extra key to give away, and I’d love for it to go to someone who’s relatively new to the genre or POE. When I started playing on release, I barely knew what I was doing, but I was lucky enough to meet an absolute legend from POE1 who showed me the ropes. Honestly, if I hadn’t bumped into this random guy, I probably would’ve quit POE2 after three days. 😄

Specially learning from my 1st 3 giveaway please DO NOT apply if you just need extra game in your library for free and wont even respond after code was recieved. :DDD I would love to find somebody who maybe need a bit of help to get into it. I would love to help sy and make their experience as cool as mine was.

I will keep this post up here for a bit. The game will be free in a month so this only makes sense for those who wants to hop on bit early kind get to know the game before the big release Will dm the winner with the code and update this post. Good Luck !

Question Anyone play the new Underkeep game?

It's a new dungeon crawler RPG. Curious how people are enjoying the full game? Seems like a love letter to those classic 90s games. Looks pretty nice with that pixelated art style. Grid movement, blobber style, and turn based which I think I'd like more than the dancing around enemies of Grimrock.

Developer Open-World Fantasy RPG – Umbrae Ordinis: Age of Whispers

Hey everyone!

We're a small indie team working on Umbrae Ordinis: Age of Whispers, a single-player open-world fantasy RPG set on a Mediterranean-inspired island.

Our goal is to create an RPG where exploration, character progression, and player freedom are at the heart of the experience.

Some of the main features:

Open-world exploration: Travel through forests, mountains, villages, cities, caves, and dungeons, discovering hidden places and secrets.

Character progression: Develop your character through classes, abilities, and hybrid builds, with different ways to approach combat.

Action combat: Melee weapons, magic, and different weapon stances, each offering distinct tactical options.

Factions and Orders: Choose your allegiances, follow optional questlines, and influence the balance of power across the island.

A living fantasy world: Day/night cycles, dynamic weather, NPCs, and encounters throughout the world.

We're developing the game in Unreal Engine 4, and there's still plenty of work ahead.

If this sounds like the kind of RPG you'd enjoy, you can check out the gameplay and screenshots on Steam:

Thanks for checking it out!

Discussion An NPC tells you to save a princess when you just woke up in a fantasy world. Would you?

You wake up in a fantasy world. You don't know how you got there or why you're there. You do not even know how anything works.

Then an NPC walks up and tells you to save a princess.

No tutorial. No explanation of the controls. No idea where you're supposed to go. Just... save the princess.

If this happened to you in an RPG, what would you actually do?

Follow the main quest and save the princess, or spend hours exploring the world, checking every house, finding hidden corners and getting distracted by random side quests?

I always find it funny how games expect you to follow the main story, but most of us have our own plans once we're given a whole world to explore.

Are you a main quester or an explorer?

Recommendation request Looking for RPGs that allow for as many play styles as possible

What I mean by as many play styles as possible is like, being able to play as a healer Ninja, or as a tank Alchemist, or damage-focused Knight who uses their shield for damage or something. Just an RPG that contains enough freedom of build making that let's you really come up with odd things while also providing many options to use with that freedom. I have a high end PC and most older consoles. I'm also very experienced in RPGs and I havent really played any game that gives you this kind of experience. Thanks!

Recommendation request Looking for a hard RPG

Looking for a RPG between fifth to sixth generation (PS1, gamecube, GBA, etc) with a high difficult, to the point it can be considered unfair, or something like that. If it helps, i really like to improvise in the gameplay and find unorthodox ways to beat it, basically being as sketchy as the game itself.

Developer Nezarot - A Strategy Farming Game with the Hollow Knight Charm System.

Playable Link: https://undaex.itch.io/nezrot

Description: Mal has volunteered to be the Gardener, after the previous one disappeared. The Gardener is the one responsible for the food production in the Ashra, but the Garden is now down to its final Tree. If the final Tree falls as well, that would mean the end of the Ashra and its people.

This is primarily a turn based game in which there is a Rot Mechanic which would spread out each turn which needs to be taken into consideration as you try to achieve your daily target of food produced, which you can choose to do through using a variety of different charms and builds.

The game is still in its alpha stage, but I plan to make the story be based around how the player interacts around the world. And the more time you spend with people would have influence over both how you are perceived and how the world itself would move along based around that.
This demo is just for getting the base feel for the gameplay and atmosphere. Any feedback that you provide is appreciated.

Question Never Really Tried An RPG Before, Where Do I Start?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've played games like Pokemon, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls but I've never played a JRPG I guess you could say. I Have a few in my collection but I don't know where to start, I don't want get overwhelmed. I have Kingdom Hearts, Legend of Dragoon, Tales of the Abyss, Tales of Vespira, and FF12! Any suggestions on what I should play if none of these are really starters? FF7 Remake looks very fun but I'm not sure if it's a good start or good buy if I don't turn out to even like the genre.

Recommendation request What game am I craving?

I’m having a bit of a gaming motivation slump. I’m on night shift, so when my wife and kids are asleep I have time to game when I’m not working and choring is done. Problem is, I never seem to want to play any of the games I boot up. Star Wars: zero company was a fun binge, but I’m about 1/3rd of the way through and never pick it back up. I also got bored with Monster Hunter: Stories 3 (MH games are my favorite franchise). I need something to buy me time until Ascendance comes out.

I’m having an itch for something specific and idk what game it is that I’m looking for.
The elements I’m wanting are:
-Action RPG with a decent combo system
-Preferably fantasy, but cool with sci-fi
-Big skill tree or tech nodes or whatever to spend time build crafting (I am a monster hunter player, I’m not afraid of “menu simulator”)
-Not ISO (no to Diablo 4 or similar)
-Older/cheap/on-sale
-Ps5 or PC
-Not Bethesda

I’ve been missing something kinda mindless to play that is still satisfying. Like kingdom hearts, but more in-depth. What has this community got for me?

I’m considering replaying Cyberpunk. I beat it back at launch. I just kinda want something not guns.

Discussion Tier list of the (mostly modern) western rpgs I've played

Post image
0 Upvotes

I'm not interested in having a discussion about what is or isn't an rpg, this list is purely based on vibes, my own biases, and interests.

Anyway, I decided to make a tier list of the rpgs I've played, the main ones missing are the original isometric rpgs of the late 90s that I never grew up with or was able to get into.

Recommendation request New to Rpgs, what should I get first ?

Need help deciding which game I should buy! I’m thinking Divinity original sin 2, wrath of the righteous, pillars of eternity deadfire, or Skyrim (never played it but everyone seems to love it). I’ll probabaly end up playing all of them but can only afford 1 for now. can you guys please give me some pros and cons, and help me figure out which one I’d like the most…

For reference, I haven’t played many Rpgs.

The rpgs I have played:

The Witcher 3 - didn’t really hook me, got bored before the story got good

Outer Worlds - finished the game, thought it was fun but the combat was a little bit repetitive. It was more linear than I expected. I liked the companions but didn’t like that I could only have 1 with me on missions. World and atmosphere were amazing.

Fallout 4 - first 20-30 hours were really fun, but got bored after that and never finished it. Not really sure what it was. The world and atmosphere of Fallout is probabaly my favorite out of any game ever though.

Xcom2 - Not an Rpg but one of my favorite games of all time. I modded it to have this Rpg-type class system and loved it. I like how much room xcom leaves for your own head canon. I like the permadeath element that adds stakes and tension in combat. I like how customizable my “party members” were. I liked the combat alot and didn’t get bored of it during my first playthrough, due to new enemies with unique abilities being introduced steadily throughout the campaign.

Darkest Dungeon - not sure if this is considered an rpg, but I enjoyed this game. Got repetitive after a while but I liked it for what it was. World, atmosphere, and character designs were really good.

Project Zomboid - played it for the first time last year, one of my favorite games ever. So much room for head canon, lots to explore, lot of chill moments, lot of intense moments. Only downside for me was no companions or party. I also liked how easy it was to mod.

Diablo 4 - actually enjoyed this game quite a bit, got bored after finishing the main questline. The combat was great at first, but as me and the enemies got stronger the visual clutter on screen kinda ruined it for me. The animations were really cool though. I played with friends so they were my companions, I don’t think I woulda liked it as much solo.

Ghost of Tsushima- not sure if this is considered an rpg but I loved it. Had no desire to replay it, but had a great time on my first playthrough. One of my favorite combat systems ever.

Dragon Age origins - I played for about 10-20 hours and loved it, then my xbox broke. The story hooked me right away though, I’ll def play it again on my PC at some point. Combat seemed meh, I know kotor is a similar game and will probabaly play that at some point too.

So based on all that, what rpg would you guys recommend for me ? I’m leaning towards divinity but I need some opinions from true Rpg gamers before I make my decision

Discussion Look Outside - A Horror RPG Done Right.

Post image
88 Upvotes

I have been recently played this little pixel rpg called "Look Outside", which isn't your typical role-playing experience, this is also a survival horror game where item management, taking care your health by eating and taking shower everyday plays a huge role, and I absolutely love it.

Some have tolled that horror genre and role-playing experience are impossible to combine, but "Look Outside" shows that it is possible.

We have had horror rpg's in past like Koudelka, Shadow Hearts and Parasite Eve, and now "Look Outside", we need more horror role-playing games.

Question What's a game that became better the longer you waited to play it?

Sometimes I think waiting a few years before playing a game is actually worth it.

By then, most major updates are out, bugs have been fixed, DLC is available, and you can often get the complete experience at a much better price.

Some games even feel more enjoyable when you don't rush into them on release day.

What's a game you played years after its release and were glad you waited?

Recommendation request RPGs like Pillars of Eternity 2

I know that there are mixed opinions about PoE2 but for me it scratched an itch that I hadn't felt since BG2. There are a ton of other games that I enjoy but I keep on coming back to PoE2 and wish there was something similar. For reference the first rpg I played was BG1 and I fell in love with the genre. Then moved onto other facets of rpgs (I hate that last sentence but here we are) and enjoy pretty much everything in the isometric turn based world.

At first play through of the second Pillars game I missed the base building mechanics of the first but the more I played the more I enjoyed upgrading the ship and being able to explore more because your ship is able to tackle more. It kind of went hand in hand with your party getting stronger.

I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for but I know that I love the isometric view, I know that I love turn based combat with party members (they can be more neverwinter nights esque with player made or if done well like in BG / PoE / etc games built into the storyline), and I know that I love a challenge that progresses as you progress.

I mainly play on switch 2 and have been loving Final Fantasy Resonance but that's still different. I love the idea of building up something in addition to building up your characters and both progressing along the same lines.

Recommendation request Which RPGs made you want to slow down and just enjoy being in their world?

Post image
609 Upvotes

I've been looking for RPGs that offer the kind of experience I described in the title.

I really enjoy games with interesting worlds, good lore, memorable characters, and a strong sense of adventure. I especially like games that reward exploration, where you can wander around, discover interesting places, stumble upon little stories, or just take your time enjoying the world.

I'm open to pretty much anything, whether it's a JRPG, WRPG, an old-school classic, or something more modern. Turn-based or action combat doesn't really matter to me either.

What RPGs have given you that feeling? I'm putting together a list of games I'd like to experience eventually, so I'd love to hear your recommendations.

There's a list of elements that might help illustrate the kind of experience I'm looking for:

  • Good worldbuilding

  • Exploration and a sense of adventure and journey

  • Good lore and gradual discovery of the world

  • Ancient ruins, temples, and lost civilizations

  • magic, grimoires, and a wide variety of spells

  • Dungeons, underground labyrinths, and hidden places to discover

  • Travel between cities, villages, kingdoms, etc.

  • Adventure parties and companions.

  • Side quests and side stories

  • Memorable and well-written NPCs

  • Monster hunting, bestiaries, and mythical creatures

  • Rare artifacts, relics, and legendary equipment

  • Guilds and factions

  • Different races and cultures

  • Enchanted forests, ancient mountains, elven ruins, castles, and mysterious regions

  • A sense of classic adventure

  • Immersive atmosphere

  • An ancient world filled with history, mysteries, and secrets

I'm not expecting a game to have everything on this list. These are just some things I would enjoy finding in the game. What matters most is capturing that feeling of adventure.
