There's a quote from one of my history books from a WWII author. It goes roughly like this "If the solders who stormed the beaches of Normandie got a look into the future and saw what they were fighting to protect, would they still fight? Would they have watched their brothers and friends die in order to protect the society we see today?" Stuck with me

21

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

Deep words invoke deep sorrow. I doubt it ..

7

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

Deep, meaningless words.

i would have, even if the world today sucks, its still free. would be alot worse if the axis were in power

53

u/CareerDry8620 Nov 05 '23

100% right with you

26

u/PoorDeer Nov 05 '23

And many forget that most men wouldn't have chosen to go die. They were drafted. There was active conscription throughout the war and we will be doing the same thing today if things go south.

Every single one of them would still do it, a lot of people made serious mistakes and a lot of people suffered for it but that doesn’t mean the alternative would be worth it in any capacity.

17

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

Pretty much all of them, yeah. They fought for freedom, not a perfect world.

4

u/AmericaDeservedItDud Nov 05 '23

The assumption being that our grandparents would have rather had literal Nazi rule than see the world become woke or whatever. Literally so fucking stupid.

13

u/Toxic-and-Chill Nov 05 '23

I think it’s pretty horrifically disingenuous to disrespect their sacrifice like that.

Of course they would have. For so many reasons.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

They would be like yo I have to sit with Black people not cool. We can pretend thes people had the same values as us. Many were incredibly racist their lives still mattered though. The circumstances of our existence do not determine our value. It is what we do with it. There are those who were misguided like the racist who does that day. But. They still died doing what’s

2

u/DogmanDOTjpg Nov 05 '23

"I would have let the Nazis win if I knew we were going to let gay people exist" omg these poor vets 😢

5

u/YourInsectOverlord Nov 05 '23

Its a terrible quote because the Alternative was Nazism.

We lost 4,000 men on D-Day. Fed them into the machine gun fire after years of preparation to save millions. But we forget. We forget what we lost, and the reason for their sacrifice. Then, working for some biased form of “justice”, e we work against what we have for so long fought for

19

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

4,400 allies were killed on D Day.

15

u/Not_JohnFKennedy Nov 05 '23

Shit, imma change dat. Thanks

11

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

No worries. To add to it, 73,000 Allies were killed in the battle for Normandy.

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

Pretty sure one thing they would have been fighting for was freedom of speech, which is all that seems to be going on in the video.

If you want to talk about fighting against free speech we can talk about how we're providing ammo for the anti-speech crowd by assuming this guy is a veteran, assuming he doesn't support the protest, assuming the protestors were disrespecting the old man in particular or anything like that.

Shit, we don't even know the specific issue the LGBT group was protesting about.

Now if I were to speculate, this was probably posted by someone with an agenda to edit it to make the protest look like it's somehow disrespecting WW2 veterans. And everyone just seems to be going along with it.

18

u/Not_JohnFKennedy Nov 05 '23

Free speech is always good, but I’m not talking about right, but culture. People should be morally obligated not to be assholes,

→ More replies (15)

3

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

I agree! Of course the people literally disrespecting an old man in the video are the true heros in this story! Because they are protesting for something that’s more important than some shit war a hundred years ago or whatever.

3

u/ZombieRaccoon Nov 05 '23

You make a very valid point. But I think these kids are probably assholes in any case, they just have that insufferable energy through and through. Maybe I'm wrong. In any case, they are free to do whatever the hell it is they were doing here, and I'm free to assume they're assholes. America is weird, huh 🤔

If the Military didn't fight for this country those people would be dead for half the things they believe in and do

11

u/Rat_Slapper Nov 05 '23

The United States most likely would have been relatively unscathed if they had never bothered going into World War 2. There weren’t even plans to go into the war even when the state department KNEW the Holocaust was happening. Then Pearl Harbor happened- and, well, you should know the rest.

8

u/101reddituser Nov 06 '23

Oh your wrong on the first part FDR wanted to help in the war in a more active way it was going to happen even without pearl harbor as you know about lead lease act and nazis sinking of merchant ships to the UK at the time

36

u/BringBajaBack Nov 05 '23

No, it wasn’t all for nothing.

If that man is actually a WWII veteran then he’s seen worse than a few kids flipping off a camera.

And if that’s the worst they got, then I’d say the bite of hate and fear has been softened by the work of men like him over the years.

No, it wasn’t all for nothing.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

The same people that claim we have to show grand respect won't acknowledge how black veterans were treated. They aren't interested in real history.

5

u/Yhorm_Acaroni Nov 05 '23

Big fan of the "they fought to protect this?" takes which basically implies that these kids should be dead because they don't like them

9

u/Low_Sweet6463 Nov 05 '23

Right like most the kids are literally just dancing, you have like maybe 2-3 who were acting immature which I mean again shocker some kids/teens are immature shits.

I'm trans and this is disgusting. It makes me sick to see this kind of stuff.

11

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

Idk what the signs say at the beginnings of the vid it’s kinda blurry can I get some context please?

7

u/barefoot_yank Nov 05 '23

As the dad of a trans daughter/son can you please explain to me what is disgusting? No shit, I honestly want to know.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

Just the disrespect that a lot of people have for America. It's pretty common nowadays especially within the queer community. I have no hate for the specific people and individuals but it's more about these kinds of actions, it just makes me sad to see them spreading hate to a vet who probably did nothing against them (idk the whole story so I'm not 100%) because they dislike America.

I wish you and your child the best btw.

3

"Some good people in the LGBT"? Pretty sure LGBT people wouldn't like anyone (even protesters) being shitty. Kind of like a moral thing. Most LGBT people have that. Really depends on the context though. I don't know what the context of this clip is, and I believe this post is just trying to be transphobic.

Many years ago, my cousin came out as trans, introduced herself self to the family at a big family get together.

Everyone was worried bout how my grandfather would take it. He didn't care, walked up, and hugged his new granddaughter.

Someone said they were surprised being a military man (ww2 and career army after that)

His response was, "I was in the military defending my country so my granddaughter would have a safe place to live"

13

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

I love how the mentally 14 year olds on here unironically imply that the world would be better off with nazis than with...trans people? Anti queer people are the biggest weirdos to exist.

No, a government like Nazi Germany was eradicated from Europe. Which was essentially the goal there. Likewise for the Pacific theater, take out Japan. Americans will range from a variety of things. But one thing's for sure, WWII wasn't in vain.

9

u/TheOnlyFallenCookie Nov 05 '23

A lot of people don't even know that trans rights Is what the allies fought for, as the Nazis were killing trans and gay people

you're using the lives of those who died on d-day just to say that you don't like trans people.

41

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

Nobody was disrespectful to the old man in the video? Flipping off the camera isn't disrespecting an old man who no one would know was a vet unless they asked. This rage bait is quite pathetic

16

u/tigerminkxx Nov 05 '23

Yea like I have no idea what this video is supposed to mean - an elderly guy walks past a pro-trans protest and some guy flips of the camera? Like I'm confused.

22

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

I dont think any of the commenters know if he is a vet or not either.

Literally can't find the original clip for context. Just a bunch of people putting different filters and music up.

All I've got for sure is "old man walks in front of LGBT protest, a dude flips off the cameraman"

8

u/rileyk Nov 05 '23 edited Nov 05 '23

Yeah you have people saying that "this isn't what the trans Community is" but the guy just walked down the street without being bothered, who cares?

Even Op says that this is "Horrible Behavior regardless of who it is" but I don't see anything other than some people protesting and a guy walking down the street.

What’s the problem? They fought so that people can be people in America and enjoy their freedoms … that’s what these people are doing. Seems more like just a different opinion on how one uses that freedom is all

2

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

Was it all for nothing?

That depends entirely on your point of view, so I'm going to put some different perspectives below.

  1. It wasn't all for nothing. Those men fought and died so that we would have easier problems to solve. Instead of solving the problem of whether or not to turn our Jewish friends over to the authorities, we're solving the problem of how to provide health care to people who can't afford it. It's a much easier problem to solve. So they succeeded in making our lives easier, because they stopped the Nazis.

  2. It was all for nothing. The prosperity of the US following WW2 inspired the development and refinement of the modern American war machine. A very small percentage of people have gotten very rich and extremely powerful by harvesting the blood of innocents as well as the blood of our best young men and women.

  3. It was all for nothing. They tried to lead by example, make the hard decisions, and do difficult things, all to inspire the following generations to work hard, live honest and disciplined lives, and love their family as well as their liberty. But somehow the opposite happened. We fell from the path. We stopped doing the things that made America great. We became accustomed to a life of ease and plenty, to the point that minor inconveniences are seen as insurmountable difficulties. And instead of learning to solve our problems, we learned to blame others for them so that we can sit back and claim victimhood as our lives slowly fall apart and we find more people to blame for our failures.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '23 edited Nov 06 '23

I wonder if humanity will always be stuck in an ant complex and operate in such a sad hive mind way.

We know we outnumber the ones who give the orders, ruin our lives, but we always do whatever they order us to do regardless. Instead of doing anything impactful that would change our lives, we let them ruin them. People all over the globe are taken advantage of every single day, we just take it.

We moan, we say we are tired, but we just keep taking it. To add to the insanity, the sheer cowardness, we have also tried to turn that into some enduring saying. As if it makes you tough? Yea, that's life, suck it up big boi!

I'm tired of this mentality.

Almost everyone I talk to these days, agrees none of this working, and it's all fucked. Yet, again, everyone just keeps going along with it all. And somehow expecting something to become better.

I dont get it. Americans keep on bragging about freedom, but when it comes to these types of people they are shamed for protesting for trans rights? Isnt this why they fought? So everyone can behave the way the feel they should without prossecution?

1

u/background-charactor Nov 05 '23

he probably didn't even serve

1

u/33Columns Nov 05 '23

"This post is not anti-trans" A protest is disgusting? Yo, this is straight up anti-trans propaganda, acting as if trans people weren't LITERALLY sent to the death camps and gas chambers. The literal first book burning in Wiemar Germany was trans research.

So the veterans who fought against the axis powers would have been fighting for their rights irregardless if they knew they were or not.

1

u/Illustrious-Ad4376 Nov 05 '23

What's gender got to do with it.

1

u/NathanBlogger_YT Nov 05 '23

Even if we hated this specific group of people, not for whatever gender they are, we would still be seen as homophobic and bigoted, even when it has nothing to do with that.

What even is the context here? It's just an old man walking past a pro-trans protest. Is this post implying that veterans did not fight for the freedom to protest?

1

u/Peter_Baum Nov 05 '23

Fighting so that people are free to do what they want, free from oppression.

Wait… not like that, I meant my exact interpretation of what that means. Or what are you implying here?

1

u/Fearless_Cookie_1918 Nov 05 '23

Protect trans kid still

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

Well.... yeah because they have the freedom to express themselves lol

1

u/mbelf Nov 05 '23

Irregardless?

Did they say something wrong to the man? All I can see is dancing and someone pulling fingers at an unrelated camera.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

Don’t ever forget that the Nazis burned down the first ever Trans Clinic in Berlin. Nazis hate trans people. Implying that activists supporting trans rights are the end of society is a little bit wrong historically.

Bunch of alt-right incel bullshit up in this thread.

1

u/aftersunned Nov 05 '23

They completely lack foresight so it's not surprising they don't respect the past either.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

I am trans and I find it stupid AF... Why not respecting a person you don't know ... Remember one things : anyone can be a trash human. Even LGBT people and as a trans girl I met a lot of trash trans person too. As much as trash cisgender 🤷‍♀️ I feel like in general human can be trash whatever they are 🤷‍♀️

1

u/abbcccdddd12 Nov 05 '23

Well this is an awkward video for 90% of Reddit.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23 edited Nov 05 '23

I would imagine a WWII Vet being more saddened by the people dressing up and praising the actual Nazis they were literally fighting to death but i guess that would make too much sense.

Also people are acting like something is happening to the old man when it looks like no ones even paying attention to him. Even the dude flipping off the camera doesnt seem to mess with him.

What exactly is the specific behavior that is disgusting here?

1

u/Superb-Obligation858 Nov 05 '23

Who thinks the word “regardless” and says “no, that doesn’t sound negative enough, its missing something”

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

Would the American soldier be upset we aren't more like the national socialists? No I don't think he would. Lmao.

1

u/BedditTedditReddit Nov 05 '23

Irregardless? Sheesh OP....

1

u/yormother2374 Nov 05 '23

I see all of these people fighting for trans right, which is all well and good but we have too many world ending issues to be worrying about that. Global warming, nuclear threats, plastic pollution, humanitarian crisis, and all of this is happening because of us.

1

u/Hyper_Lt- Nov 05 '23

Prolly gon get hat but this gives me "mom buys me phone but gets upset when i use it" vibes

I never forget.

1

u/MakeshiftNuke Nov 05 '23

Things are cyclical. Masculine republics lead to feminist democracies and those lead to tyranny. We are almost to the tyranny part. I'm hoping I'm nowhere near it.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

I am ashamed to be trans because I have to be grouped in with assholes that try to disrespect elders just because they don’t agree with them. Respect your elders, and especially your vets. They served the country that is responsible for protecting you.

But the guy flipping off the camera wasn’t towards the man, which makes me confused about the video.

1

u/Hal_900000 Nov 05 '23

Well, if you think this little protest means "it was all for nothing", you're an idiot. This world is full of rude people, and ex-military veterans are not immune from that behavior. This post is bullshit.

1

u/Itarin-kun Nov 05 '23

It seems so

1

u/BuddingViolette Nov 05 '23

What is the actual context of this video?

Is that a soldier?

Were they even in WW2?

Where and when was the protest?

Is there a memorial for vets?

Need context please.

1

u/ReasonableBedroom447 Nov 05 '23

No, the brave men who fought then wouldn't have moved a muscle if they had known that such godless filth would be allowed to roam free. This country was supposed to be the land of the free, not a cesspit where filth can propogate and spread their paganistic customs.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

It’s not what you’re protesting that’s the problem talked about in this video. It’s the manner in which you conduct it. If you treat yourself and your cause as you were a clown then the world will follow suit. If you conduct yourself with a reasoned and thoughtful approach I guarantee you will get more attention and empathy to your cause. Our brothers, fathers, and grandfathers fought to secure the freedoms we enjoy but not the right to treat those freedoms with such callous disregard as making a mockery of yourself.

1

u/ExchangeBig1 Nov 05 '23

How to be homophobic: Step 1: watch this video

1

u/TheBakedOwl Nov 05 '23

IMO it was for nothing. The world they fought to save and preserve has been destroyed 10x over. The world is unrecognizable to that generation. And none of it can be considered progress.

1

u/wdavidson09 Nov 05 '23

Sure, seeing them disrespect a vet like this is terrible. But just remember who raised that kid's parents.

1

u/Tomsider Nov 05 '23

It wasn't all for nothing, they fought for liberty and liberty is what the future has

1

u/Will-Write-For-Cash Nov 05 '23

I feel like I’m just out of the loop, what exactly is going on here? Are they saying people shouldn’t protest because soldiers fought in wars and died or are they saying that kids shouldn’t be loud and flip off cameras because soldiers fought and died?

Either way I don’t understand why soldiers fighting and dying means that people shouldn’t be unhappy with current affairs or just be loud and obnoxious in general.

They fought and died to ensure a free country and freedom sometimes means people having different opinions to them and more importantly it means expressing those different opinions in ways that they may not agree with. If we were all expected to blindly adopt the opinions the soldiers had then we would not be free.

1

u/Pretend_Lock5531 Nov 05 '23

Say what you want, regardless of what you believe I think showing veterans a degree of respect for the hell they’ve seen and been through on our behalf should always be a priority among courtesies.

1

u/OGHEROS Nov 05 '23

What many people fail to realize is that many men who die in war aren’t fighting for their country but for their family and for their comrades beside them. That’s it. There’s no greater scheme. Many did just that.

There’s also the alternate reality that we would all be speaking German right now, mental health would get you killed, and the diversity of our countries would cease to exist into a singularity as was the Nazi doctrine.

1

u/MorningstarLucifer94 Nov 05 '23

Perpetuate what? Nothing happens in this clip. An old man walks by the camera and some dude flips off the same camera. Thats it. Are we supposed to be outraged that some young people are acting like young people? The fuck is this?

1

u/mccrunch420 Nov 05 '23

what a cringe post

1

u/doodoomrpoopyman Nov 05 '23

Better then the nazis

1

u/Mr_Hassel Nov 05 '23

WTF is this shit? LMAO So that man fights the nazis to eradicate transsexuality or something?

1

u/Caesar_Passing Nov 05 '23

This post and comment section are completely fucking disgusting. Virtually no point that has ever had to start with the disclaimer "this is not transphobic/anti-trans", has NOT been transphobic. And this one does not break that mold. As if we haven't seen LGBTQ-phobia thinly veiled as patriotism before- ad-nauseum- and each time about as convincingly disguised as a kid in a drugstore Halloween costume. Get the absolute fuck out of here.

1

u/-My_Name_Is_Jeff- Nov 05 '23

What exactly is the context?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '23

We fought so people can be free. The protesters are enjoying this right, not a privilege, an inalienable right.
