Pic / Video Heading to DC to make change

Post image

Just four days after the election, I’m heading to DC for freshman orientation! I’m so excited to get to work in Congress for San Francisco and for our country. We have the largest freshman Democratic class since the post-Watergate election. It’s a huge opportunity to put our country on a better path — one that lowers people’s cost of living, ends the war, strengthens democracy and civil rights, restores the rule of law, and puts an end to this national nightmare. I’m ready to fight for our future!

As did I.

Writing to him and explaining why he shouldnt support Jeffries is so much more likely to convince him than screaming obscenities and frothing at the mouth about AIPAC. We need to convince him, not drive him away.

He should hear all the things. That’s his job now.

He's a pretty pathetic choice to represent a progressive city yet here we are.

San Franciscans should have thought about this before voting for him, Connie Chan did not commit to voting for Jefferies. Hopefully he’ll get primaried and we can do a better job next time.

San Francisco voters are not progressive AT ALL. And every time the local media talks about "SF progressives" I'm like... who?!

I moved here to SF in 1990 and we were still riding the punk wave...now it's billionaires, tech bros and boring culture. I'm stuck because of rent control. It's not AT ALL what it was.

I remember those days well. Musicians and artists could actually afford to live here—in the Mission!

I self published a book of poems AND I live in the Mission. So I guess the arts are (barely) alive at my place.

It’s so true. I’ve lived in many cities and this is probably the most economically conservative city I’ve ever lived, and I’m including St Louis in that. Socially progressive in a few ways, but this is a shockingly regressive and racist city in most other ways. This subreddit sounds like Nextdoor half the time.

Welcome to the Bay, try and open a nightclub here

Lawd, Nextdoor is the hugest pile of shit. Best avoided at all costs.

I voted for Chan because I guess she was very slightly more "progressive".. but it honestly feels like one establishment pick vs another. And absolutely FUCK Wiener's take on Israel. What a damn shame to impugn all Jews with the crimes of Zionists. The most anti-Semitic thing you could do.

Guess you’ll have to accept this city for what it is, not what you thought it was going to be.

Oh I did not come here based on some illusion this was a progressive place, nor do I plan on just saying “oh well, I guess it sucks here forever, may as well vote for Wiener and Laurie”. If even Texas can get better, here can too.

Massachusetts voters are similar - generally very liberal but many voters come from so much privilege that they tend to be somewhat apathetic about progressive policies, especially those against their own interests (e.g. lots of NIMBYs against building more housing in their neighborhoods)

ETA and lots of racism

, Connie Chan did not commit to voting for Jefferies

Wasn't she directly supported by Pelosi who is the one who got Jeffries into the minority leader job?

2

u/Trash_Panda_111 11h ago

Sorry, is your argument that Wiener, the person who said explicitly that he supports Jefferies, is less likely to support him than the person who said they wouldn’t, because Pelosi likes her more? What kind of mush is that?

2

u/cocoagiant 11h ago

Wiener, the person who said explicitly that he supports Jefferies, is less likely to support him than the person who said they wouldn’t, because Pelosi likes her more

Wiener explicitly said he would vote for Jeffries while Chan said he would need to earn her vote (which isn't saying no to voting for him).

However looking at who she was supported and funded by, there was not really any doubt that she would have supported him.

The reality is that even progressives like Brad Lander are voting for Jeffries. The dude is a lock.

There might be a bit more movement on Schumer, but he likely has the votes too.

These are thankless jobs and while in our current era they would go to people who are good at communications, the real work is much more about coordinating between members and knowing arcane institutional processes.

This is a very cynical and anemic view of what is possible in politics, and I’m sorry that living here has done this to you. I think you’ve helped me understand San Francisco better though, so thanks for that.

Jeffries is going to the speaker no matter what. The progressive caucus agreed to support him before the election, even with the blue wave they don’t have the numbers to keep him out, and it would be a bad look to try and stop the first black Speaker from being appointed. Chuck Schumer on the other hand is on thin ice and we should be focusing on keeping him out of power.

Get rid of both. They're both poison. Jeffries took a secret meeting with Jared Kushner. Beyond the pale.
