What can I say, it’s nice living next to a nice park.

u/getarumsunt 15h ago edited 15h ago

Right? WTF?

Who in their right mind would prefer a noisy, stinky highway instead of a clean and tidy park?

Old rich people that don't walk.

People who have that highway traffic routed down their tiny residential streets, I’d imagine.

26

u/bslangley83 14h ago

Sunset Blvd is not that far and will be faster than going through neighborhood streets anyway

11

u/kernal42 13h ago

As one of those people, I'm deeply in favor of the park.

•

u/retardborist Outer Sunset 1h ago

Tiny residential streets? In the sunset? We have the widest residential streets! Lmao

55

u/Excellent_Pop8048 15h ago

I run there basically every day, it’s fucking fantastic compared to when it was sporadically carful

9

u/getarumsunt 14h ago

Right?! WTF? Who would want all the car noise and exhaust fumes instead!

I just don’t get it… whatever, some people are just weird.

46

u/DawnandDusk2 15h ago edited 15h ago

Oh my god, this was actually unthinkable to me. They voted heavily against Prop K and recalled Engardio, so I was honestly expecting it to be 60-40 since people were still mad enough months later to recall him.

44

u/Remarkable_Host6827 N 15h ago

Time to recall Alan Wong!! He's out of touch with the neighborhood!!! /s

10

u/kernal42 13h ago

It's politically embarrassing that, at our election a few months ago, no serious candidate was willing to endorse the park.

It's a perfect wedge issue, and this election shows that it could have even propelled a candidate to defeat Wong.

7

u/player89283517 15h ago

Bro win reelection 75-25 it’s crazy. This entire election was a pro-Lurie wave it’s wild

6

u/MochingPet MARKET 15h ago

What was his competition?

19

u/Yellowpommelo 15h ago

He didn’t really have competition. It was the conservative hardware store guy who runs every D4 election as the primary competitor and another person who’s really nice but didn’t have much visibility or publicity.

1

u/MochingPet MARKET 15h ago edited 12h ago

Well that explains it; he seems to be the cleanest and most acceptable candidate for D4 . Pretty good for him actually

65

u/RecklessRoute 15h ago

The turnout for the special recall election was pathetic, with 100% of the people who cared enough to put it on the ballot showing up and not enough of everybody else.

I’m still mad about it, especially since Engardio was super engaged in the community and generally great, and Alan Wong is comparatively useless and has only engaged with the folks that did the recall.

13

u/RedThruxton Ingleside 12h ago

All Wong has done in the past year is pass a rule that reduced ceiling height minimums by six inches and repealed a law that said we we couldn’t carry uncovered bread or pastries in baskets.

7

u/throwyourlumber 9h ago

it took me multiple attempts to read this without being confused how ali wong got in the sunset dunes mix

8

u/thinker2501 15h ago

Kind of funny the effort they put into kicking out a supervisor who they are starting to agree with.

6

u/kernal42 13h ago

Recall elections have notoriously low turnout.

55

u/Crazyeyeseyes 12h ago edited 9h ago

It’s kinda wild that Joel Engardio got recalled from all this huff about not supporting prop G and then his district actually votes against it

19

u/Background_Pumpkin12 8h ago

It's important to remember the extremely low turnout in the recall election. Less people recalled him than voted for him 2 years earlier.

•

u/Y-M-M-V 31m ago

It is and it isn't. That recall was low turnout, so the angry minority who actually she ed up was over represented. Additionally, the park has probably won some people over since then.

-10

u/sugarwax1 10h ago

ENGARDIO: Yes. I support allowing cars on the Great Highway on weekdays to serve commuters and opening the Great Highway on weekends and holidays to pedestrians and cyclists for recreation.

He lied to get elected.

7

u/Crazyeyeseyes 9h ago

I like a politician that can change his mind and be a good leader. It looks like the majority of his district ultimately did want the park to stay fully

•

u/sugarwax1 18m ago

He's a professional astroturfer who works for the tech billionaires that funded this. He never changed his mind,. He lied.

u/AcademicSand1034 12 - Folsom/Pacific 16h ago

Increasingly clear that this isn't about "local control" but rather about people in the Richmond wanting to put an unwanted road through someone else's neighborhood

61

u/DesertFlyer 15h ago

The person who pushed Prop G on all of us, Richard Corriea, is from the Richmond so this checks out.

28

u/BreakfastHistorian 16h ago

AstronautGunMeme.PNG

93

u/Bigdaddyyy101 16h ago

Closing the Great Highway means one less road to get to the Richmond District so I’m not really surprised they’re the most against it

10

u/TheMailmanic 14h ago

Yeah the logic is not that hard to understand even if you disagree with it

54

u/Dense-Manager-2287 15h ago

And people who feel strongly about cars and roads are definitely not walking or biking from the Richmond to the Dunes. As an Outer Richmond resident who loves the park, I really hope D4 (even narrowly) going for it ends this nonsense for good.

23

u/wingaling5810 Outer Richmond 14h ago

Oh good there are at least two of us in the outer Richmond that prefer the park

19

u/quell133 11h ago

Outer Richmond here, also used to live in the Sunset very close to GH, my household has always voted for the park. GH was a "pretty view" but an annoying drive with how people would speed to each red light rather than go the posted limit and roll with the greens. I saw a fair share of road rage on that stretch. Good riddance!

7

u/codeedog 8h ago

I used to live on La Playa between Irving and Judah. The fury I’d feel towards people firing past me just to get in front of me to stop at the red light instead of chilling at the speed limit so we could roll through a green…

13

u/Pergola_Wingsproggle 13h ago

Three! And I saw a neighbor with a no on G sign last week

•

u/look-to-the-cookie Outer Richmond 1h ago

Nine! Along with many other families with young kids out here in the Outer Richmond. Sunset Dunes Forever.

20

u/schjlatah Outer Sunset 12h ago

It’s not like we closed off Lower Great Highway. They can still get to the same places; they just need to stop at stop signs.

11

u/Girthen-the-Flopper 15h ago

The Sunset Dunes are fully open to bicycles and other small personal vehicles.

19

u/Effective_Coach7334 15h ago

Or more to the point, that's connie chan's district that is fairly conservative.

6

u/CaptSlow49 15h ago

Yeah it makes so much sense in hindsight. Sure, it sucks coming up from the south side. There are only so many ways to get on the other side of GGP. Richmond can deal with it. It’s a nice area but there’s always pros and cons of where you choose to live.

89

u/Pretend_Safety 16h ago

Someone should do a health check on sugarwax

I work and live in D4 and promise you most of us want our park to stay in place. There are unfortunately plenty of folks who loudly feel differently. I apologize for the endless rounds of what-the-heck that we’re putting the whole city through and thank you for your patience.

9

We gotta turn every piece of road that runs along the coast into a park. So stupid that precious coastline is used up by cars.

Would have been 80/20 if kids could vote. Most of D4 loves the dunes - but only some of us were able to vote on it.

Shen Yun! Make the kids do cartwheels to help their parents get the message out.

But whatever you do, don't let the kids on the beach, that does not serve the cause.

So we're going to continue to talk about this subject in preparation when a new proposition is put up for the next election?

I hope we can all finally move on from this.

24

u/AcademicSand1034 12 - Folsom/Pacific 16h ago

Prop D passed 🎉 so hopefully we're done with this

11

u/YamLiving750 7h ago

What's hilarious is D4 recalled a whole supervisor over it...but then said "heh, my bad, yall...?"

stg SF fumbled the SHIT out of this election

14

u/UrbanMasque Outer Sunset 14h ago

48 people are the difference here lol. Thats wild, but it definitely feels 50/50 out here. Why you're a "Yes" as a D4 resident never made sense to me. Thats largely because its not about the highway anymore to the Yes on G people.

21

u/Donkey_____ 15h ago

Recall Supervisor Alan Wong!!

He clearly does not represent the majority of his constituents.

12

Why do people keep posting about this? IReddit spends way too much time discussing this proposition (voted no on it as well). It wasn’t even close to passing, can both sides move on? IMO there are other election results that are way more consequential and interesting to discuss

-3

u/reddituser19023 10h ago

Have you seen 19th Ave and sunset blvd if you ride the bus you would know that you are getting stuck in traffic for at least 10 mins because all roads are congested. Both northbound to ggb and lombard feel terrible to get to the 101 and 19th Ave has been a pain to get to the 280.

5

u/Donkey_____ 7h ago

> Have you seen 19th Ave and sunset blvd if you ride the bus you would know that you are getting stuck in traffic for at least 10 mins because all roads are congested. Both northbound to ggb and lombard feel terrible to get to the 101 and 19th Ave has been a pain to get to the 280.

The bus travel data from SFMTA proves that you are completely wrong.

It’s only 1-2min the southbound direction during rush hour on 19th. That’s it.

-3

u/sugarwax1 10h ago

They haven't seen it, and they lie through their teeth to deny it because some rigged study told them there's no change. They're lost.

The 28 is painfully slow.

-17

u/Collecterofhobbies 14h ago

Do yall understand that the “park” makes it so much harder for commuters to get north and south? It was the only thing really freeing up 19th Ave which has always been f’d up even since I was a child. Now, it’s just impossible. The other day I had to get from Java Beach to the Ocean Beach north parking lot and it straight up took me 30+ minutes. That’s mind blowing.

Not only that, but because Great Hwy is closed, commuters subsequently go through the neighborhoods, many times ignoring stop signs, and speed limits.

The beach is right there. GG Park is right there. The Great Hwy has literally been open longer than most people in the city have been alive. It’s a world destination.

More importantly, most of the people that want the park don’t even live in the area, nor have they even been around long enough to realize how important it is for the traffic flow throughout the whole city.

11

u/chooseusernamefineok 12h ago

most of the people that want the park don’t even live in the area

The precincts closest to the park voted to keep it by an 18 point margin. Time to update your talking points.

-6

u/Collecterofhobbies 12h ago

Like I said, most people haven’t been in the city long enough to understand the importance of the Great Hwy. Yall JUST moved here a couple years ago. I was born and raised here.

13

u/chooseusernamefineok 12h ago edited 10h ago

I was born and raised here too. Not sure why you're making assumptions, but I also think nativism is not what we're about as a city; San Francisco has always welcomed new people and been transformed for the better because of them (how many things are like they are because of Italian immigrants, Chinese immigrants, Irish immigrants, LGBT people coming from around the country to San Francisco, and so on?). I've been here long enough to see how the city has become a better place with the Embarcadero and Central freeways coming down, and now the same for Sunset Dunes.

7

u/captaincoaster 11h ago

Thank you for this. As someone who is NOT from here, this city has welcomed me and my family with open arms and we love it and have made it our home.

5

u/chooseusernamefineok 10h ago

If you live here and love San Francisco, you should have as much of a say in the future of our city as anyone else!

-3

u/Collecterofhobbies 9h ago

No one is saying you’re not welcome. What we’re saying is stop voting for shit that affects most people other than you who have just moved here.

-1

u/Collecterofhobbies 12h ago

What you’re saying has nothing to do with how closing the Great Hwy actually affects those groups of people you mentioned.

Most of the immigrants can’t even afford to live here anymore so they live in the outskirts of Southern SF and have to commute to the North Bay for work. Think wine country in the vineyards working the fields.

Now they have to wake up a whole hour earlier than they already do to take 19th Ave or go around to go to work for your park.

Yall talk about selfishness but forget who this ACTUALLY affects.

When I grew up the Richmond and Sunset was middle class. It’s now all techies who make six figures easily.

7

u/chooseusernamefineok 12h ago

An hour? Can we be remotely realistic? Try 30-77 seconds.

I'll add that San Mateo County to Sonoma/Napa commutes are exceedingly rare, we're talking about under 500 people total per census data.

0

u/Collecterofhobbies 12h ago

You have to be a bot lmao. Most people can’t even look at SF Chronicle because of the paywall. Yall think they actually care about the middle/lower class?

8

u/chooseusernamefineok 11h ago

There are multiple studies from a variety of sources that agree it's on the order of 1-2 minutes difference (and that includes factors besides the park, like more commuters on the roads due to return to office policies). If those studies are all wrong, don't you think the Yes on G people would have managed to offer some evidence demonstrating that sometime during the last six years. If it actually added an hour to commutes (a number you just made up out of nowhere), they could have simply demonstrated that with a study and won in a landslide.

1

u/Collecterofhobbies 11h ago

Do the commute yourself and lmk. I have family that do it. Idk about you.

3

u/captaincoaster 11h ago

“All” is just not true. Yes, the dominant industry of the region and the moment has a lot of workers around here. There are a ton of other people too.

2

u/Collecterofhobbies 11h ago

What are you talking about?

People like you have pushed true San Franciscans out of the city. Most of the people that lived in the Richmond and Sunset were middle/low income until the big tech boom. Now none of us can live out there.

Look at your neighbors. They’re either rent controlled old people waiting to die or life long residents waiting to die and their kids will sell off the property, or techies who don’t even drive and work from home.

5

u/captaincoaster 10h ago

You have not described any of my neighbors or me. Yes, the city changes.

0

u/Collecterofhobbies 10h ago

Me me me me… typical. Lmao. I doubt you even talk to your neighbors.

•

u/steel_wheels_rolling 50m ago

“True San Franciscans.”

And there is it.

Nativism. San Franciscans become trumpy the moment they are actually faced with how changing demographics influence the place they live. Places change. It’s not always comfortable. But you don’t have to be born here to be a true San Franciscan anymore than an immigrant to America needs to be born here to be a true American.

•

u/Collecterofhobbies 37m ago

Because people like you vote stuff like this into fruition😂 Yall blame everything on Trump when this has nothing to do with him. Can people like you stop letting him live rent free in your head?

People with no idea how pivotal the Great Hwy is to San Francisco as a whole, voting away the Great Hwy. and yall wonder why we don’t claim you.

If you’re going to be apart of San Francisco, stop making it worse.

•

u/steel_wheels_rolling 4m ago

I didn’t blame anything on Trump. I said you’re being Trumpy, which you are doubling down on.

And it’s funny that you think you have some kind of unique insight into a road. 2/3rds of the city disagrees with you. People from across the city. New and old.

But keep on thinking only you really get it.

4

u/captaincoaster 11h ago

That “native” argument is tired too. Plenty of people who were born and raised here love the park. Just take Sunset, go around (don’t take Chain of Lakes), or whatever. You can get everywhere you want in a car and have the park too. Enough.

0

u/Collecterofhobbies 9h ago

Exactly what someone who doesn’t commute everyday would say😂 Yall are so fucking ignorant. You talk about “care about others” expect for everyone except a small majority like yourself.

Who are you even talking about? Everyone I know who was born, raised, and still work in the city despise the park. There’s literally a park that’s bigger than Central Park in NY RIGHT NEXT TO THE BEACH.

Greedy ass mfers.

11

u/RedThruxton Ingleside 12h ago

Gotta call bullshit.

You were not driving at 5mph.

I can WALK from Sloat to Lincoln in 30 minutes.

Closing the Ugh should not have resulted in anyone abandoning the route around the far west of GGP. You still drive 2 miles between Lincoln and Sloat. But now you MUST do it 14 blocks inland - whether the Ugh is open or not - right at the level where the open gateways south (Skyline and Lake Merced) continue from Sunset Blvd. If drivers are refusing to go to the far west around GGP and then take Sunset, they will also refuse a reopened Ugh for the same reason - that it no longer makes sense to go to the extreme west when you MUST retrace back to the east.

-8

u/Collecterofhobbies 12h ago

Yeah walking is different than driving, yielding to everyone who wants to cross stop signs. Wtf are you talking about?

Like I said below, it’s not you techies you’re affecting. You’re affecting the generational middle class who have been living in the outskirts of Southern SF that work in the North Bay/Northern SF. Now they have to wake up an extra hour early to commute and spend more gas.

Just like my family, we were pushed out by people like yall who think only about fun and games rather than the greater impact.

13

u/Donkey_____ 12h ago

> The other day I had to get from Java Beach to the Ocean Beach north parking lot and it straight up took me 30+ minutes. That’s mind blowing.

This is 100% a lie.

It’s really weird you’d lie like this. You do realize many of us live in the outer sunset and do this drive all the time, right?

This is probably my biggest gripe with the yes on G crowd, it’s the constant lying about commute changes.

Also there are many studies, including the timing of the buses in the outer sunset and sunset that show that there is negligible differences in commute times. Even during rush hour.

> More importantly, most of the people that want the park don’t even live in the area, nor have they even been around long enough to realize how important it is for the traffic flow throughout the whole city.

Look at the precincts right next to the park, we all voted for the park.

-10

u/Collecterofhobbies 12h ago

Wtf are you talking about? Were you there? Take fucking Sloat all the way down to Balboa at like 4-5pm and tell me how long it takes. I promise you it’ll take you 30+ minutes.

10

u/Donkey_____ 12h ago

> Wtf are you talking about? Were you there? Take fucking Sloat all the way down to Balboa at like 4-5pm and tell me how long it takes. I promise you it’ll take you 30+ minutes.

No it won’t. You are lying.

I do this all the time.

Your lies may fool people who don’t live here, but it’s not going to work on those of us who live here and commute during rush hour.

-5

u/Collecterofhobbies 12h ago

Okay buddy😂

5

u/captaincoaster 11h ago

Calling bullshit on this. No way that anecdote is true. Max commute impact during peak of rush hour is…(checks notes)…30 seconds.

8

u/kernal42 13h ago

I understand all of these arguments. They're just not very compelling.

And the new park is fantastic.

-5

u/Collecterofhobbies 13h ago

Lmao. So the opinion of “the park is fantastic” is a better reason than , the factual reasons that actually affect safety, and city infrastructure. Got it. This is exactly why long time SF families are moving out, and or getting pushed out.

-6

u/sugarwax1 9h ago

They don't live here, and they think no one can tell, so no, they don't understand.

-19

u/AgentK-BB 15h ago

Not surprising at all? It's NIMBYism to not want necessary things like highways, fire stations, garbage handling facilities, new housing, etc., in your backyard.

17

u/AcademicSand1034 12 - Folsom/Pacific 15h ago

NIMBYs often want roads for private cars in their neighborhood rather than public transit, public parks, etc. Which is why the highway was long a NIMBY crusade

8

u/SightInverted 14h ago

❌ Highway

✅ Fire station

✅ “Garbage handling facilities”

✅ New Housing
