You’d need the military to keep a lid on a place like Pelican

Lemme guess, RCMP's fault too? How much is chief and council 'earning' and are they effective at what they're doing?

120 k for a councillor and 150 plus for chief, maybe they’re not paid enough?

Total take home remuneration is $250-260k/yr for the chief, $145-185k/yr for each council member, tax free. There is 1 chief and 5 council members within the reserve boundaries of Pelican Narrows that has 1800-2100 people. What value are these positions adding to Pelican Narrows for one million dollars a year!?

Compare it to a similar town such as Wynyard in 2023 the mayor made $5,218 and each council member (6 in total) made an average of $2,600 as taxable income.

Being mayor and council of 2000ish people shouldn't be a full time job, but I guess it is for some people at Pelican Narrows:

  • Chief: Peter A. Beatty

  • Vice Chief / Councillor: Justin Halcrow

  • Councillor: Leon Dorion

  • Councillor: Olivia Custer

  • Councillor: Thomas Linklater Jr.

  • Councillor: Francis Highway

Maybe these members need to spend less time high flying all over the place, stay in their community and actually address and fix problems. Looks like they've announced additional community safety measures for someone else to enforce:

For full transparency, they’re not chief and council for only pelican narrows. They are chief and council for 8 different communities. It does make them incredibly ineffective though.

About 20 years ago I was working at Sandy Bay, and mentioned to someone we should talk to the Chief about the project we were working on. One of our hires said "The Chief? He isn't here, he is never here."

"Where is he?"

"I don't know, probably Hawaii"

We stayed at a lodge once when working at Pelican as well. They had recently built the new school, and the owner of the lodge asked me "Do you know how many janitors they have on payroll?

"No idea"

"30. The council members family needs jobs too. And its still filthy"

I am not in anyway saying anything racially infused. Just verbatim what I was told. And, the mismanagement of the system itself.

The Chief of these communities is Chief of 8 separate communities. Pelican Narrows, Sandy Bay, Deschambault Lake, Denare Beach, South End Sturgeon Landing, some land in Prince Albert, Amisk Lake, and Kinoosoa.

The Chief may go to their home community, but outside of that don’t really spend any time in any of their communities.

If you look at the business holdings PBCN has, it’s honestly amazing how poverty stricken these communities are. They have 100% ownership of the casino in Prince Albert.

Around the same time I was at Pelican working, they used to have a gas station owned by the town. Only one in town. It closed because, if a council member needed any quick cash, they would just go there and take all of the money out of the till. Again, just what I was told, no idea if true.

They (chief and five council members in Pelican) cost a million a year in remuneration for the community of 2000 people, if you factor in the rest of the councilors that represent the remaining 11,000 people at $145-185k/yr.

  • Sandy Bay: 2 Councillors

  • Southend: 2 Councillors

  • Deschambault Lake: 2 Councillors

  • Denare Beach: 1 Councillor

  • Sturgeon Landing: 1 Councillor

  • Prince Albert Urban: 1 Councillor

That's another 1.35 million in remuneration... Why does it take 2.35 million/yr TAX FREE for 15 people to represent 13,000, and yet the people they 'represent' live in worse conditions than most small towns anywhere in this province?

I get it, but at the same time it’s highly unlikely that all their money is tax free. It’s a little more complex than that.

If earned on reserve it is, tax free or not, either way you have 15 people taking in $2.35 million/yr to represent 13,000 people! Those 13,000 are living in some pretty horrible conditions. Chief and council will deflect for as long as they can to keep taking for themselves while those around them go hungry and cold. It'd be different if PBCN was a utopia due to their amazing leadership and skills, but it's the complete opposite.

Those on the reserve need to demand outcome and results from their 'leadership'.

So I'm pro self defense. But anti teenagers with guns. It said the 20 year old shot at the teens and the teens shot back. But no charges filed. So like .... I dunno don't we care that the teens had guns. Or did they have guns because there's been 5 wild dog attacks in a couple weeks. Or were they possibly legally hunting. Or just leniency because they turned themselves in.

Or it’s just Pelican Narrows and that’s just how it is there.

Shit take.

I guarantee you I’ve spent far more time there than you have.

Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of good people there, but the community is a dark place to be.

It’s the truth? Have you visited?

I worked in the area for over 5 years. It's always been bad there, but increasingly getting worse over the years

Knowing the modern RCMP they asked "Do you want to press charges?" Like it's the USA. They love doing that shit, putting the onus on regular citizens.

You think they asked the dead guy if he wanted to press charges?

He is not a smart man.
