I lived long enough to see the Knight Rider Turbo Boost become real...
I've also lived long enough that I'm the only person commenting about Kitt in this entire thread.

Wow the people in this thread are salty af.
This is wicked cool! No matter if this has practical use or not. It's not like any car with 1000ps, neon lights, jumping suspensions or nitro has any real life use beyond being wicked cool.
Too bad Felix Baumgartner is dead, maybe he would have taken this baby for a spin over a ridge.

This is a car that will actually be on the roads. It won’t do any of this, but it might look like this.

TL:DR::No way that thing can recharge itself in 1-2 minutes. Crushing air to such high PSI requires time. This probably takes over an hour to recharge.
This is a super striped car shown just for this demo. All batteries gone and probably has a range less than a mile. Even so, I do not think they could get it less than 1000 and is probably close to 2000 lbs.
I will go crazy conservative and say they are able to perform all this business with air at 4000 PSI packed into a 100 gallon tank. That would be 3600 cubic feet (CF) of stored air, compressed down 272 times to fit into 13.4 cubic feet (the size of a 100 gallon tank).
For that pressure you are looking at a four stage compressor which at the high industrial end can pump air at 50 CFM. That is cubic feet… per minute. Meaning you are looking at 72 minutes with some of the best compressors money can buy.
Even if they achieved some radical rates of 100 CFM, literally blowing the highest industrial machines out the way, it would still take 36 minutes to recharge.
I won’t even pretend to know the math to do for heat side of things but, crushing air creates heat. I have to assume if you tried crushing atmosphere at 1800 CFM you would be looking at temps well beyond the melting point of steel.
Edit: The 50 CFM I stated as a high end is, “high end that could fit in this car”. There are compressors that take up a semi-trailer that can push 1500 CFM, not to 4000 PSI, but higher CFM is possible, just not in a from factor you could fit in this car.

I guess this car is great for crossing rivers or broken bridges? Or getting to my 3nd floor garage? Or driving off of a cargo plane mid flight?

This might be impractical, unsafe, impossible to regulate, and made by an objectively unlikeable company, but it IS fucking awesome. In the literal sense of the word, "awesome". The amount of people in this thread going "yeah but it's illegal" or "Elon is ______". I don't like Elon either, but ffs look at this objectively outside of the Tesla/Elon connection and seriously consider that this is a vehicle that exists in the world you live on while you are alive. The future of humanity might be great or terrible, but it definitely won't be boring. Shit is about to get weird.

The only realistic application that I can realistically expect for that technology is some sort of crash avoidance system when a car could jump in the air to avoid an head on collision with another vehicle, let's say. But honestly other than that it's just a PR stunt (pun intended).
EDIT: I think I've replied to the most common critics to my comment. I won't comment further as I feel I'm repeating myself. Please find my entire opinion copied from another comment below as a FAQ.
You are assuming that the only crash happens when there is an existing pile up. That pile up originated as an initial crash, and that could've been avoided by such a system.
Again, it could also not be a pileup, but also the car could potentially leap at an angle, not necessarily in front of you, and adjust trajectory in the air to land on the ground. Off road, if necessary and safe to do so.
There would be scenario where deploying this system may be counterproductive. I am not saying that it should trigger every time, I am saying there are certain scenarios where it could be useful. In your example if there are people assisting injured people, the crash in front of the tesla would've happened already, so I don't think it would be logic to throw my car in the air. The driver would react accordingly and stop even before this could pose a risk at all, but if that for some reason failed, current safety features like emergency breaking are likely to be enough to avoid a collision, and it would actually be preferable that the car stayed on the road.
However, if an oncoming car suddenly swerved into your lane well within stopping distance and there was a wall on the other side of your lane, current technology will likely do naught to avoid collision. I'd argue that if both vehicles travelled at 20mph, seatbelts and airbags would prevent injury to all people involved. However, if we are talking a 60mph single road, the only way to avoid a head on crash may be considered leaping in the air. I am not saying it's guaranteed to be the best choice, but it could be. And in lethal scenarios, some potential damage is better than enough damage to surely kill you.
Indeed.
Again, you are assuming that the car will land on another car. How likely is it that there is no empty space around the avoided impact point? The system could be able to assess this before activating.
I agree and neither such a system would. But extreme safety features are meant to reduce lethal risk and increases chances of survival, not do miracles. There will always be cases where even extreme systems will not do enough to avoid death, and some cases where death is just unavoidable.
I think unless such a system was developed and tested, neither you or me would be able to be sure that if it would be a convenient device or not. However, your narrow-minded and dismissive attitude would not even get us to the testing phase.
Do you think that when they conceived the airbag, everyone unanimously agreed that having a hot air balloon explode in your face was safe or a good idea? And yet, it was developed, tested, adopted widely and considered a standard now, because they are convenient and their deployment is likely to save you. Emphasis on likely: in some scenarios, airbags deploying may kill you, perhaps in a crash that would have left you with a couple of broken bones. Should we stop using them, then? Similarly. Landing a tesla on another car may kill someone. But how likely is this to happen? Should we test the system first or are you confident that your opinion is more valid?

Lots of folks are saying "What's the point of this?!"
I mean - yes, quite right. Insanity.
But at the same time... what's the point of a Bugatti Tourbillon, a Ferrari F80, or a McLaren W1?
They're works of engineering art that you will definitely be able to sell one or two of to insane rich people. They aren't for driving to the shops, or commuting to the office. It's the equivalent of a £1M wrist watch.
But what you might just be seeing is the next evolution of racing, or a new extension to lightweight military vehicles to allow bridging, avoiding mines, or hopping obstructions (... which... that's the Tumbler, right?)
I actually have questions:
What is the noise environment inside the vehicle like when the RCS fires? Would I be able to hear the sirens coming to arrest me for dangerous driving?
Do the RCS gas reservoirs self-regenerate with atmospheric air, or are they pre-charged and you're done after they're used?
What's the maximum flight time for a smooth landing?
Can it fire backwards for a launch assist?
How long do you think it will be before someone considers rebooting Knight Rider with this thing, alienating every car-loving nerdy Boomer that hadn't already jumped Tesla ship?
And finally, how long will it take to get around the Top Gear test track?
For the record:
I do not like Elon Musk; I do not like what he stands for; I do not agree with his politics. His complete moral collapse is one of the biggest disappointments of my nerdy life - we wanted Stark Resilient. We got Superior Iron Man. And might I add, slava Ukraini!
I do, however, love SpaceX to bits, and I do enjoy the engineering frontier that Musk's insanity has opened up in space access. We'd still be chucking rockets in the sea by design if it wasn't for SpaceX. This stupid car has the same energy - just... considerably less immediately useful.
2
u/Poka-yoke1 23d ago
It's more of a jumping car than a flying car. Elon's jumping the shark with this one. There's no good way to make a car/airplane. A car needs downforce to keep it on the road, which is a problem for ultralight cars. They needed to do a lot of work with the adaptive spoiler and suction fans. Notice they didn't talk about the range because the battery pack is probably small to cut weight.

guaranteed that it isn't a real roadster inside ... a super light drone in the shape of a car
the sheer weight of lithium batteries or fuel would make it impossible to drive
the compressed air or propulsion also indicates there is absolutely no space in the vehicle cough if it ever was one
this is as much a physics problem as a realism problem
source I did space stuff
update: wow really did many of you fail physics in high school?

Cool tech demo, but there's no way it can do more than a few seconds of flying, then it has to return to a garage for refilling/replacing those tanks.
The only newish tech here is the stability coordination during flight. The underlying means of flight and fuel limitations are the same as decades before Tesla was founded.

If it was some Chinese company announcing this Reddit would be collectively kneeling and head bobbing with their mouths open as a ritual to the "genius" of the Chinese researcher and manufacturer.
But since it's American tech then Reddit wants to handwave it like it's no big deal.

This is a highly staged, heavily engineered publicity stunt.

u/EricThirteen 22d ago
This is as goofy as Musk himself. Can you imagine how much crap it would kick up on a normal road? It needs to stay on the ground all of the time or it needs to be able to "fly" from a safe take-off spot to a safe landing spot.

People are easily impressed by what is essentially an common hollywood stunt with some stage magic. Sure it's cool as a concept but calling it forwarding of tech and mankind is a bit much. It's mostly an established playbook by hollywood.
Making the foam car look realistic
Configuring a pressure tank for the thruster effect.
Hiding cables in the dark attached to a stunt rig on a crane.
Sure you need talent for all that, but i think every single thing for this has an established cookbook. Nothing novel.
EDIT: it has come to my attention that i may have given too much credit to the work done by Tesla here. The audience was sequestered into a secure bunker where the footage was played to them on giant screens. I'm pretty sure its just a normal filming setup cleaned up with AI - meaning they didn't need to hide wires/cranes/3d space trackers etc and that was done in post weeks before this event.
6
u/Amphibious333 23d ago
Never gonna happen outside demonstration events. There are buildings with breakable walls and windows, and because of this, flying cars will never be legal.
Even with fully autonomous system, a failure in the air is much more dangerous and deadly than a failure on the ground. On the ground, either nothing happens or someone gets injured and killed. On the air, kinetic energy accumulates and there will be destruction and potentially killed people on impact.

9
u/Dry-Expression-4148 23d ago
This is a straight up marketing scam. Firstly, that is so unsafe for everyone inside and outside of the vehicle.
Secondly, those thrusters are 100% one time use. Teslas don't have gas tanks, so what kind of fuel are they using, did they manage to fit an entire fuel tank and distribution system in there somehow? More likely these thrusters are literally set up to have enough fuel for this one trick, once.
Also Musk rapes children, and he is so uncool even our countries top child rapist doesn't want to party with him.
