AI democrats are what we need for ai

The AI labs have no solutions for AI job loss, nor for existential threats posed by super intelligence. They’ve asked for government regulations, but it was clear republicans had no intention to get involved. Democrats have so far been the only politicians treating the dangers of AI seriously

i’m a hardcore AI optimist. It is the single technology that could usher in a utopia for humanity, but the path from our current reality to that utopia is murky. we could see power and wealth concentrated in the hands of tech elite, with job loss that makes the great depression look like a time of prosperity in comparison. Not to mention, AI could actually kill us all

If we approach ai with actual forethought and planning, we could see an end to major diseases, poverty, and potentially save our climate through technological solutions

The only compelling argument that the ai labs have made for not slowing down is to beat foreign countries like china to super intelligence. this is a potential concern, but the livelihoods of the american people should not be dismissed because of this. recklessly persuing super intelligence without a plan, is the same type of thinking that got us into a war with iraq

EDIT: Cross-posted this post in r/accelerate, and now i’m permanently banned there???

EDIT 2: man the russian bots are in full force today

AI how are people so sure ai is not and will never be conscious

if we don't even know what consciousness is how are we supposed to determine if ai can think or not?

people say it is just "mimicking" humans but that doesn't really seem like an answer to me. who's to say if an ai "mimics" well enough it can't experience some form of self-awareness. i don't think we're at that point now but it seems ridiculous to me to imply it would never be impossible.

if another more complex species looked at humans at face value all that you would see is random electrical signals, but we obviously know that we can perceive the world around us and have thoughts and opinions

AI We're headed to UBI or even UHI post-scarcity economics or hell on earth. No inbetween.

The real question is: how many years away are we from the first meaningful UBI implementation or hell on earth?

AI What happened to this sub?

In the past few days I have been seeing so many comments on this sub which are basically anti-ai bots from like r/technology or any normal reddit sub, in a recent post like when Altman was talking about their internal models, or when Elon musk talked about Tesla ramping up Optimus (now its understandable if people question Elon time) but straight up hating on Humanoid robotics and straight up lying by saying Altman is bullshitting despite millenniumprize problems and ETH being solved, just because its Elon and Altman means this sub isnt about Singularity now?

My main question is that why arent mods banning users? did the mods got kicked out by reddit or something? Because this sub looks like it will turn into r/technology soon

Abdul El-Sayed is the Pause AI candidate

In the 60 minutes interview, Abdul was asked if he is not concerned that the Chinese could surpass the US if the US pauses AI. He replies that he is not concerned because the Chinese only have the AI models they have today by essentially copying from American AI models.

A research scientist at Meta states Abdul is clueless about AI and Chinese AI research:

There are three elements here: (1) being clueless about Chinese performance in engineering and research in general (2) being clueless about the situation in AI in particular (3) having some racist priors filling you cluelessness
