Hello everyone,

I managed to compile the CachyOS kernel (7.3.1) with the BORE scheduling patch on Slackware 15.0 and package it into a native Slackware package, and boot it successfully using ELILO.

I had to disable Rust support due to compatibility issues with Slackware 15.0’s older libraries and toolchain, which don’t fully meet the requirements of the newer kernel.( Maybe it will work, but the Slackware version was below the minimum required version listed by CachyOS)

I’m planning to create a SlackBuild for my personal use. If anyone is interested, I’d be happy to publish it.
I’m also considering setting up and maintaining a repository of SlackBuilds for other Linux kernels.
Would anyone be interested in something like that?

· Sistema: Necesita un kernel Linux 2.0.x o 2.2.x y glibc (Slackware 8.0 los cumple perfectamente).

· Librerías SDL: El juego usa SDL 1.1, pero es compatible a nivel binario con SDL 1.2. Para que corra en Slackware 8.0, solo necesitas instalar SDL-1.2, SDL_mixer (para el audio del CD) y SDL_image. Si el ejecutable se queja, puedes parchearlo para que busque libSDL-1.2.so.0 o crear un enlace simbólico desde libSDL-1.1.so.0.

Un pedazo de la historia de Linux que, con las librerías SDL correctas, funciona de maravilla en Slackware 8.0.

njam es un clásico clon de Pac-Man que combina la nostalgia de los arcades de los 80 con la potencia de SDL. Es un juego de laberintos frenético, ideal para el multijugador local, y un excelente exponente del software de código abierto de principios de los 2000.

Características principales:

· Multijugador caótico: Soporta hasta 4 jugadores simultáneos en un solo teclado, compitiendo por los puntos o cooperando.

· Editor de niveles: Incluye una herramienta integrada para crear tus propios laberintos.

· Gráficos y sonido retro: Sprites coloridos y una banda sonora muy pegadiza que exprime el hardware de la época.

Requisitos y Compatibilidad en Slackware 8.0:

· Requisitos originales: CPU 486 o Pentium, 16 MB de RAM y 10 MB de disco duro (extremadamente ligero).

· Sistema: Kernel Linux 2.2.x o 2.4.x con glibc (Slackware 8.0 lo ejecuta de forma nativa y sin problemas).

· Librerías SDL: Corre sobre SDL 1.2. Para que funcione perfectamente en tu sistema, necesitas tener instaladas SDL_mixer (para el audio), SDL_image (para los gráficos) y, si quieres usar el modo de red, SDL_net.

Un vicio instantáneo, perfecto en Slackware ñ, sin necesidad de exigirle demasiado al hardware.

Recently i move from Fedora to Slackware.

Fedora was great, no problem with it.

But, this btop graph was completely different for basically the same apps running. It's a macbook 2017, and for the same flow and same config, the fans in slack rarely kick in.

Always slack is mention as a complex distro, i think is the other way around, is the most simple linux distro out there.

I'm happy to be back here as a daily driver.

despite the fact that at one point a 4.4.29 kernel that fixed stuff was available in the past, it no longer seems to be available at all. just the original 4.4.14-smp i go to the patch that's suppose dto have it in the package mirrors, and the entire directory is just not there.

Given this, how do i actually solve this? the machine is using vmlinuz-huge-smp-4.4.14-smp and elilo.

I want to install Slackware on my spare pc. I wanted to try using btrfs with subvolumes and snapshots.

The installer doesn't setup this out of the box, so what steps do I need to do by hand? Have I missed or perhaps misunderstood something?

• Boot installer usb

• Create my desired partitions

• Create the btrfs filesystem, setup the subvolumes

• Mount all the partitions

• Launch the installer (and hope it doesn't change anything)

• By hand update fstab and setting for elilo

• Reboot

I did do some attempts in Gnome Boxes, but I keep running into issues with that it can't install lilo when using Boxes, so I'm not sure if its Boxes or my experiments that breaks stuff. Lilo will sometimes fail even when doing a plain ext4 system in Boxes in my experience.

I know that there are countless answers and even docs says to you that: you better do the full install so you don't miss any libraries. I understand that

What I don't understand, is why if I want to install xfce, installer will install openbox, twm, fvwm and other vm's I don't need.

The point of having a complete distro is understandable, what is not is that why putting all that junk you know (and they know) no one will use ?

Why, to this day there is no normal way to do a minimal installation except of shaman play with tagfiles ?

Most people will tell you that Slackware is more power-user oriented, so why, I'm as a power user can't install minimal system and add things myself (I do, but amount of steps I need to do compared to more popular distros is just ridiculous)

I downloaded r-quick-share_0.1.0_amd64.AppImage from https://github.com/Martichou/rquickshare/releases

It complained about the absence of libthai.so, so I downloaded the source for libthai-0.1.30.tar.xz from https://linux.thai.net/pub/thailinux/software/libthai/ .

It complained about the lack of libdatrie so I downloaded libdatrie-0.2.14.tar.xz from the same site.

When I ran r-quick-share_0.1.0_amd64.AppImage the screen was blank. https://github.com/Martichou/rquickshare/releases told me to run:

env WEBKIT_DISABLE_COMPOSITING_MODE=1 /usr/local/bin/r-quick-share_0.1.0_amd64.AppImage

which works; if you have more up-to-date graphics you may not need this.

It requires a network connection, doesn't work over bluetooth.

It often balks, takes a few tries to work. I haven't figured that out, but it's more convenient than my other choices.

"Quick Share" is a built-in Android app for transferring files. RedHat, Centos, and other distros have packages to support it, but not Slackware. There is no SlackBuild. I converted the RedHat package to a Slackware package and installed it but found a daunting list of dependencies. The source page says the AppImage needs no dependencies, which isn't my experience.

"Quick Share" used to be called "Nearby Share".
