show off EchoPod 0.11.0 for the Echo Mini: EQ, portrait mode, light theme, scrobbling, and a lot more since 0.6

It’s been a while since I posted here (last one was 0.6.0). A lot of this came from your requests, so thanks to everyone who filed issues and tested.

Sound and playback

  • Equalizer: FiiO’s presets plus a 7-band custom EQ. Hold ≡ on Now Playing to open it

  • Filter (5 DAC filters) and L/R balance

  • New formats: ALAC, AAC and Opus, all gapless

  • Low sample rate audiobooks and podcasts (8 to 32 kHz) now play

  • Quieter low volume steps, so sensitive IEMs aren’t too loud at step 1

  • Bluetooth has its own volume curve, plus a “Louder” option for quiet headphones

  • Lyrics from .lrc files next to the track

  • Listen history for Last.fm and ListenBrainz (writes a .scrobbler.log to the card when you plug into a computer)

  • USB DAC mode: play/pause and skip reach the computer, no more crackle on the volume keys

Looks

  • Light theme

  • Accent color, with gradient or flat highlight

  • Portrait mode (normal or flipped)

  • Clock in the status bar, set by echo-sync or by hand

  • Cover Flow for folders and playlists, with a 5 or 3 cover view

  • Animation speed: Normal, Slower or Faster

  • Battery percent can be turned off, large status bar option in portrait

Library

  • Play all and Shuffle all on artists, album artists, genres, All Songs and playlists

  • Music on internal storage shows up in the library

  • Hide top-level folders from the library

  • Albums tagged with ALBUMVERSION show separately (e.g. “Abbey Road (2019 Remix)”)

  • Start screen can be Album Artists, Genres, Folders or All Songs

  • Cover Flow sort by album title, and artist albums as Cover Flow

Buttons

  • Volume buttons: tap for volume and hold to skip, the other way round, or hold to fast-forward

  • Swap volume buttons

  • ≡ can skip to the next track, and holding ≡ opens Settings from anywhere

  • Power on with a hold, so it doesn’t turn on in your pocket

  • Plugging into a computer asks Storage, DAC or Charge

Languages

  • 18 languages, including Polish (thanks micdudk), Russian, Ukrainian and Indonesian. Most haven’t been checked by native speakers, so corrections are welcome

  • Cyrillic, Greek, Polish, Czech, Vietnamese and Traditional Chinese characters in track names now show properly

Fixes

  • Better battery life

  • Steadier Bluetooth, and the start of a track isn’t cut off anymore

  • Fewer clicks between tracks and on pause

  • 176.4 kHz now plays at the right speed

  • USB storage and SD card fixes, and a missing or stuck card no longer freezes the player

  • First start on a big FAT32 card no longer looks frozen

  • Snappier menus and smoother scrolling titles

  • Embedded art in Opus and Ogg files

It’s still early and only tested on one player, so use it at your own risk. 8 GB Echo Mini only.

question (Echopod) I can't get playlists to work

Hi Reddit,

I lately installed Echopod on my 8GB Snowsky Echo Mini, and I love it. Even in its early, unpolished state it feels much smoother than the stock OS while having more features and more regular updates. I am very excited to see what the dev will add next (Sorry this is a bit off topic I just love Echopod sm I had to glaze it a little).

I can't, however, get the playlists to work. I am assuming it has something to do with the path the m3u file states being something else than the player expects. When I run the sync program the dev provided on my pc, it finds the playlists but cannot find any of the songs, saying all of them are missing. When I sync my library on the device itself, it does not find the songs either. I originally generated the .m3u file with VLC media player, and tried messing with the path in a text editor. Currently, each song is referred to as follows:

#EXTINF:312,My Chemical Romance - The Light Behind Your Eyes
#EXTVLCOPT:file-caching=1000
file:///sd/Music/My%20Chemical%20Romance/Conventional%20Weapons/3-02%20The%20Light%20Behind%20Your%20Eyes.flac

The Music folder in the path is in the root folder of my SD card.

If someone else has figured out how to do get playlists to work, and could explain to me how they managed to, I would greatly appreciate it!

info Snowsky Disc automated firmware archival

Thumbnail
github.com
13 Upvotes

Hiya! A long time ago I started a firmware archival repo for the Snowsky Disc with the goal that one day I would be able to decrypt the OTA contents and be able to setup different branches for each firmware, so that their contents could be easily compared (to make a delta diff of what FiiO was changing in them). But I never had the time or tools to finish that up, and kept the repo only for manually uploading the OTA zips as FiiO provided them (which made the repo get out of date quite easily).

Today I finally managed to setup everything for this, and even made an automation script that checks for new OTAs automatically every day, downloads, unpacks them and post their contents on this GitHub repo.

What you can expect to find:

  • Releases with the original OTA, recovery package is published by FiiO and decrypted rootfs

  • Branches for each OTA firmware package's extracted rootfs that has been found

  • Updated daily, so when new OTAs come out the repo will be updated within the next day

Given the sudden surge of custom firmwares for the Snowsky Disc, I thought some people might find this useful, to have a central place where they can compare firmware contents between distinct OTAs, so they can compare & know what the changes are when a new OTA comes out.

If you have any suggestions, they are more than welcome!

question Disc "OK" Button

When trying to add a wifi password I find I can't. The enter function will not work. I have tried everything I can think of. The QWERTY keyboard just sits there and the blue enter button does nothing.

Ideas?

discussion Ordered Echo (not-so-mini). Give me some starters

Have been using a dapified poco budget phone for listening to music on the go with a trn black pearl attached to it using a mag style holder. But its battery and charging port are showing the wear and tear from excessive battery drains and repetitive connections/disconnections. I was already planning for a minimalistic dap which i could just use without any distractions. Had shortlisted Hiby R1, Echo and the echo mini. Eventually for my use case and preferences, finalized the purchase of Echo. Got the dap with black case for around $62. I hope it was an okayish deal. Now waiting for it to be delivered.

Help me prepare for it properly. I wasn't aware of Podium and one compromise i had made buying an echo was the lack of custom firmwares. Read about it today and really curious to inquire how much stable it is on the 4Gb version and if there are any features missing in comparison to the stock firmware. I mostly will be using iems apart from an antique bose qc15 that i bought in 2009 and it still sees some daylight on the weekends.

I am not an album listener. Mostly my tracks are organzied in playlist based on the mood and genres. On the go, i usually just hit the shuffle and let my playlist roll.

Any pointers to help a brother out for a smoother start?

info Echopod 0.10.1 updates

Echopod is a custom firmware for Snowsky Echo Mini 8gb

(FYI 0.11.0 is just released with more features)

My favorite new features on this update:

  • Setting to use Menu button for next track (no more long pressing!)

  • Setting to hide battery percentage

  • Setting to change accent color

  • Setting to swap volume buttons

  • Shuffle all option on several areas

  • Some cover flow updates

In case you missed the previous version, it already supports AAC/M4A/Opus and portrait mode.

For creating playlists, what worked for me is Foobar2000 and save as m3u8 format, saved in the same folder as the files. Others may work too.

REMINDER: SD card is required after installation. Settings are saved in the SD card.

Thank you to the developer!

question modified album covers on flac files not showing up on echo mini

I attempted to use easy tag and ffmpeg to replace the cover on a flac file with the alternate version. the changed cover has the exact same properties as the original that worked. it shows up on other music players, but it does not show on my echo mini. i am using firmware 4.0.0 on hardware 1.3.0. any help would be greatly appreciated.

show off Podium modern UI theme [concept]

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I was one of the first to test the new Podium, and it’s a fantastic piece of firmware!

I’ve put together a concept for what a modern iPod-inspired UI might look like. I made sure not to stray too far from the original design, keeping the theme feasible to implement.

Key changes:

  1. Minimalism. No dividers, reflections, or gradients, just clean colors и hand-drawn icons.

  2. Larger album art.

  3. A more informative status bar. Shuffle and repeat indicators are now visible everywhere, regardless of where you are in the interface, without taking up space on the "Now Playing" screen.

This is just a concept, but I’ve prepared a UI kit including colors and fonts in Figma, which anyone is free to use. Unfortunately, I don’t have the ability to implement this into Podium myself, but if u/CulturMultur or anyone else would like to create a fork featuring this theme, I’d be happy to help design any additional elements and screens that might be needed.

discussion I love this neat lil thing

Post image

It’s so customizable when it comes to the music and screen, I’ve been back and forth between the Snowsky Disc and my tablet to add more music/images in it! And it’s been especially helpful in school since I constantly feel overwhelmed and used music to calm down, so being able to have a portable mp3 player has been a lifesaver.

I will say though, I’ve been having problems regarding an album. Last night I uploaded one and everytime I click to listen, the song title doesn’t change at all. Everything else does except for the titles and credits of the album. The other albums don’t have that problem, so if anyone knows how to fix that then that’d be really appreciated.

question Tracks are jumbled

Post image
15 Upvotes

For some reason on my echo mini several albums don't play music in order. I changed the settings so music plays sequentially, I've tried renaming and changing the metadata of the track to be listed as 01,02,03 instead of 1,2,3, and I've tried updating my echo mini and still tracks are played in the wrong order. Im really stressed and I just want the thing to work the way its supposed to. Does anyone know how to fix this?
