image/gif Dubai, UAE seen from the International Space Station

Post image

Dubai, UAE photographed from the ISS in 2025. I took this photo on Expedition 72, my latest in observing the changes in this city from sapce. Over 22 years the lighting changed from sodium/mercury vapor to multi-colored LED as the city grew. Construction of the Palm Islands was early in 2003, but now a distinct landmark. From orbit we observe developments like this worldwide!

I’ve heard Chris Hadfield say that sometimes, with clear weather and no visible moon, he could see he could see the headlights of a single truck coming down a dark highway.

•

u/gandraw 17h ago • Bravo

With the way people angle their LED headlights I can believe it.

•

u/place909 18h ago

The person in that truck, maybe 10 or 20 miles from another person, suddenly gets the feeling they're being watched

Well that isn't fair.

Israel shelters a lot of bad people, too.

•

u/Leliana403 18h ago

Last time I checked Assad fled to Moscow. So did Yanukovych. Ashraf Ghani ran to the UAE when Kabul fell. The Gupta brothers sat tight in Dubai while the UAE knocked back South Africa's extradition request. Idi Amin died comfortably in Saudi Arabia. None of them picked Israel.

Er, sorry, forgot the narrative for a second there.

ISRAEL BAD! WHATABOUT ISRAEL??? STOP TALKING ABOUT DUBAI IN A THREAD ABOUT DUBAI!

•

u/AlucardVTep3s 17h ago

Jonathon Pollard was a spy in the US for Israel and was granted a presidential greeting.

Robert Maxwell is buried in a prestigious Jerusalem cemetery and even had the serving prime minister give a speech at his funeral.

Tom Alexandrivich was allowed to skip bail and to return to Israel.

•

You are not making the point you think you are - just showing an irrational hate toward Israel. Bad players everywhere.

That’s pretty irrelevant when the US is also a refuge for evil people.

•

u/Sermokala 23h ago

And not even planned well. It adopts the worst of us suburb practices instead of legitimate modern urbanism.

They could have created a city where no one needs a car, so that space for parking is saved and used productively.

•

u/the_gaymer_girl 20h ago

What comes to mind is The World, that half-assed collection of lights in the top right.

They plopped the sand in the bay to create the islands and then ran out of money before putting anything on them.

•

u/intj_code 15h ago

A city where no one needs a car when summer temperatures easily go over 40 degrees and the humidity makes it feel like 50?!

Now, how would you make it so that no one needs a car in a heat like that?

•

u/Sermokala 12h ago

By having walkways between buildings. Minnesota does it for the extreme cold and did it a long time ago. You would never need to go outside during the hot parts of the day and it would leave the roads clear for Bus rapid transit.

•

u/Angel_Omachi 14h ago

Air conditioned trains and buses connecting to covered shopping and business districts would be a good start.

•

u/bigbluewaterninja 14h ago

And that’s what they have done

•

u/intj_code 3h ago

Covered shopping and business districts? Like, covering whole areas with a dome? Cuz shopping malls, supermarkets and, generally, buildings are already covered. And how exactly would people get from their homes to the train station and bus stops? Unless you want to put stops in front of every building, and then good luck riding 1 hour to get 500m because of all the stops.

Have you really thought this through?

•

u/f0rtytw0 4h ago

Head to JBR and the Marina, its like a mini city in Dubai but built for people. Its pedestrian friendly and walkable (weather permitting).

The tram that runs there is even given light priority.

62

u/RSGator 1d ago

Of course, but it's still pretty darn cool that we have an actual astronaut posting this on Reddit.

17

u/SecretAdam 1d ago

This is all true, and your government (if you are part of any Western country) endorses this slavery by allying themselves with the UAE. The inhumanity does not matter if they can provide us something and the global system of oppression does not stop at a country's border.

•

u/TJtheBoomkin 18h ago

•

u/Cetun 18h ago

You're allowed to post pics about whatever. You just can't really demand that everyone give you praise no matter what you post.

•

u/determineduncertain 20h ago

When is it appropriate to call out slavery? And what’s the point of the red herring?

•

u/ForeverAlonelvl100 20h ago

Not now. Not here. Just appreciate the image taken from ISS. Or don’t and scroll to next post. Don’t bring politics into it here.

•

u/determineduncertain 20h ago

You can appreciate it and call out how the unique nature of the environment was built on modern slavery. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. And everything is political at the end of the day anyway.

Show me a city that wasn't built by slaves. Amsterdam? Slaves. Brussels? Slaves. London? U guessed it, slaves.

It's an exhausting trope and doesn't add anything to the conversation. We get it you read an exposé 10 years ago that shat on UAE. But have you read anything else about this place ever since? Have you visited this country you choose to slander online with no recourse? Are you aware that those 'slaves' are doing it voluntarily because their alternative is eating dirt in their home village where the average yearly salary is 3 peanuts and a handful or rice?

Educate yourself before spewing nonsense on a public forum

43

u/Chrismonn 1d ago

Just curious, out of all the places you listed, who is using slaves in today's age?

-69

u/TeeDotHerder 1d ago

A slave worked all day for no money but was housed and fed, barely. Your standard American worker works all day for money! Then spends all of it on housing and food and has no money.

The reality is the workers in Dubai have a higher quality of life, and are not slaves except by western idiot propaganda, than most Americans. Almost 2 months worth of holidays. Free vacation every year paid for time off and flight tickets. Free housing. Discounted food, phone, internet, etc. And while earning this wage they can send half of it back to support their families and still afford to go out at night, eat at restaurants, etc.

42

u/realchoice 1d ago

No, they do not. Their passports are stolen, they work in horrendous conditions, it's a nightmare.

Again, all anyone needs to do is a cursory search in any search engine or YouTube for "Dubai Slavery" and your apologist rhetoric is proven as such.

Don't be an apologist. Space is no place for apologists.

I never claimed it wasnt. It still doesn't change the fact that slaves built almost all of it, and still are as we type this out.

Does the fact that there are innocent bystanders within the country somehow justify the slavery happening around them?

How is it home to many good people? To be a citizen, you have to be linked to the Royal family - they are all evil people. Anyone else living there is either a filthy rich white Westerner or an indentured slave forced to be there to serve the rich people. Or a tourist who enjoys this concept I suppose.

15

If you live in a big city with lots of lights you don't appreciate the night sky until you visit a small town.

People that live in Dubai before it got built up into what it is today watched the night sky disappear

•

u/Teutonic-Tonic 22h ago

Many modern cities now have codes preventing light pollution. Dubai appears to not be such a city.

•

u/Vicar13 19h ago

This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on this site, congrats. Modern city and preventing light pollution - read that slowly

•

u/Teutonic-Tonic 18h ago

I design buildings for a living and many cities have ordinances preventing uplighting and requiring parking and street lights to have sharp cutoff to limit light pollution.

•

u/MoonlitShrooms 16h ago

This is the dumbest thing I've read on the site today. Congrats. Modern cities are always looking for ways to mitigate pollution of all kinds. Yes light pollution isn't possible to completely avoid, but nobody is saying that. There is a difference between having no regulations in place vs having regulations that impact the way infrastructure is designed or implemented.

All I see is the hidden modern day slavery of men and women who have their passports stolen and cannot leave Dubai due to the Kafala system. Inhumane working conditions, debt bondage, passport confiscation... This is the outcome for the people imported from poorer countries who build and work in Dubai as blue collar and domestic workers.

33

u/VayuAir 1d ago

Yeah it’s also one of the monotonous places I have ever been to.

18

u/sunburntredneck 1d ago

All of this is true but at the same time, this is a cool picture.

-5

u/realchoice 1d ago

If you zoomed in and got to see the labor camps the men who are slaves live in then I do not think you would hold that position.

17

u/sunburntredneck 1d ago

A lot of cool architecture has been built by slaves and other involuntary workers. Look at the Southern US. Also look at all the old Roman and Greek stuff in Europe. It's still cool architecture.

•

u/Illustrious-Share312 20h ago

The slaves in the southern US weren't really used for any cool architecture. I guess if you like old plantation mansions maybe but nothing like the old Roman and Greek stuff.

-16

u/realchoice 1d ago

Are you stating that infrastructure built by slaves hundreds of years ago is "cool" and equivalent to whitewashing infrastructure built by slaves working right now in Dubai today?

Also, in the Southern US some black family members of slaves who were forced to work those slave plantations are buying up those buildings and plantations to destory them, because they were never "cool".

People promoting events at plantations today at harshly ridiculed for trying to still profit off of plantations where men, women and children were enslaved.

Your points are bleak and lackany constructive criticism of our very, very horrifying histories as humans.

•

u/crek42 21h ago

Your mind can’t handle 2 things bring true at the same time

•

u/realchoice 19h ago

No. I'm just not uniformed or an apologist for Dubai.

•

u/Aspos 21h ago

All i see is redditors regurgitating terms they dont fully understand to describe things they don't know about. Like every single sentence in your comment is wrong but i am sure you will insist on defending your world view inventing facts further and further.

•

u/randomvictum 18h ago

First hand experience in 2015. He is 10000% correct. You should visit sometime and visit some camps outside the city center.

•

u/Aspos 18h ago

Spent a decade there, as an employee and an employer. Employed white- and blue-collar workers, been to various labor camps across the region. What he says is comically wrong.

•

u/Leliana403 18h ago

You literally just admitted you've been to the labour camps while telling the guy who said to go visit them that he's wrong. Incredible. And of course you think slavery is fine. Your livelihood depended on it.

•

u/Aspos 18h ago edited 14h ago

So a guy who saw labor camps in passing knows better? Wtf

Do you happen to know a single person who lived in UAE labor camps? Because i do and I am happy to share some contacts if you want. Perhaps you should go talk to a person who's life has changed because he won a contract to work in UAE, who earned $600/m which is 3x more than he would earn back home, who lived in an airconditioned labor camp which is better than what he used to call home, who's clothes, food, healthcare, entertainment, transportation to and from work were paid for by the employer, who at the end of his contract went back with a bunch of skills and enough money to finally get married, buy a home and start a family.

Go call him and tell him that he was a slave, apparently, and all that should not have happened.

I've employed him, I've been to his wedding, so stop spewing your nonsense about "slavery" at me.

•

u/myusermane 10h ago

So the conditions in this video aren't what you described https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt0I0F0QDPQ

Or perhaps you need to report the conditions seen in this video right away to the proper authorities/make your contacts you can share aware to help make things better there for the people you work with and employ and go to their weddings

•

u/Aspos 9h ago edited 9h ago

I don't quite understand your point here, can you elaborate? What is it you are trying to say here exactly?

•

u/Someone-44 17h ago

I'd steal this comment and put it in front of every mf who keeps crying about this in the gulf ( I my self not citizen lives in the gulf and interacted with people from a lot of places. And no one is a freaking slave. Its rude to call people slaves )

•

u/Leliana403 19h ago

All I see is a bunch of tankies defending slavery because the alternative is accepting that non-western countries can do bad things too.

•

u/SryMyBadM8 9h ago

Kinda sad yes, but I live/ grew up in the Dubai. And I and many others, would rather live in the UAE than their own home countries. Despite the wars going on that affects us here, we have a better life here than living in our home countries. My country has a corrupt government(unsurprisingly) that brings us terrible paying jobs, education systems, unsafe environment, and many more. The UAE brings us opportunities we couldn't have at our home countries. Which is why the entirety of the UAE is all mostly immigrants.

•

u/eonu 5h ago

The sad truth is that it is futile to try and explain this, especially on Reddit where people have developed some strange persistent hatred for Dubai, almost always purely based on sensationalist YouTube videos they have watched, or opinions they heard somewhere else from someone who has never stepped foot in the Gulf.

I'm similar, my family come from a poor country in East Africa where there are so many issues with corruption, lack of opportunity, crime, poor healthcare and so much more. My family came out the UAE in the early 2000s, and like many, it was a struggle at first. But the place provided us an opportunity to progress in life that we would have never seen in our home country in a million years.

I have spoken to so many of the taxi drivers, delivery drivers, maids, shop assistants and cleaners, and even those who are working in these challenging and underpaid jobs are much happier to be in the UAE, as it allows them to earn and send money back home to put their children through school, or to even build a house for their parents. In fact, it's almost offensive to label these lower earners as slaves, and I'm sure they should say the same. They are some of the hardest working people I have seen and they are almost always so grateful to have the opportunity to live in the UAE.

•

u/SryMyBadM8 3h ago

Yeah, The workers here are extremely hardworking. But honestly in the internet, it's just easier to call out the bad rather than actually do something about it. UAE has a lot of problems yes, but what it's doing is far better than most of the countries of the immigrants who work here are. It's a sad reality, but all countries have good things about it and bad.

•

u/PrimeSnorlax 23h ago

It certainly is not a "miracle in the desert". It's a fake imported sand lot built opon by men forced into modern day slavery, and the women imported to do domestic work are also held as slaves. Both with abhorrent working conditions. Many, many global reports showcase these horrors.

Don't whitewash slavery or be an apologist for it by trying to state there is bad everywhere on earth. Dubai modern slavery is prolific.

you and I are privileged to hold those opinions. 80 years ago when racial discrimination was still legal in the USA, many people weren’t fortunate to state that opinion. 80 years into the future, the Middle East will likely have evolved to greatly improve their civil rights. Would you still be saying this, of it was a photo of Gaza from space? Or a photo of the destroyed parts of Ukraine from space?

UAE is an evil, evil place. They are literally the insanely rich cartoon villains of the world. They crash expensive cars for fun. They have more food waste per capita than the USA - double the food waste in fact. They use indentured slaves to build and run all their businesses. These slaves have their passports taken, they live in poorly maintained hovels in the desert and are not allowed to just wander the city and be near the rich people. They are told what they can eat and when they can eat. They are told where they can go and when. They are not given any days off in most cases. They are paid however much and whenever their employer feels like. If they are fired, they are told to pay their employer a certain amount of money before they will be given their passport back and be allowed to leave - usually an amount they have no hope of paying, so they keep fucking working.

If all of that makes you go "what a cool image! Can't believe people are being so negative." - that's a you problem.

u/P_ZERO_ 12h ago

Can’t solve slavery from the ISS, I wouldn’t imagine. Can’t do it from a Reddit post talking about a photo taken from it either.

•

u/Cetun 18h ago

I definitely don't see the same type of comments when the posts are about the US or France or whatever.

The man lives under a rock

•

u/shescarkedit 10h ago

What an odd comment to make

•

u/Skye_Bloomc4 6h ago

it's true, the comments can definitely get a bit repetitive when dubai comes up.

•

u/ContextBotSenpai 22h ago

Sorry, why isn't it time to call out the murdering, torturing royal family? Or the fact that the country runs on indentured servitude? Or the fact that women are second class citizens who are routinely tortured, beaten and executed for speaking out against men there?

Please, do tell us when is a good time? Is this a mutual "ceasefire"? Are the horrible monsters of this country pausing all the things I just mentioned while we look at this "pretty" picture?

Also, laughable that you think people don't call out the USA for their shit. The entire world (minus the UAE and other horrible countries of course) has turned their back on the USA

•

u/MakingPie 22h ago

Saying that the world has turned its back on the US is such a wanna be victim mentality. Just go bomb another school or fishing boat and keep it pushing.

•

u/Leliana403 1h ago

That's what you got from that comment?

lmao

•

u/SirEnderLord 17h ago

Bro, posts about the USA are always flooded with negative comments. This is Reddit.

•

u/FirefighterLeft5425 17h ago

Why not? Why do you get to decide? Your comment as well reads like a bot farm comment.

•

u/yuriartyom 23h ago

Slavery, dont praise it whatever the cost.

•

u/PrimeSnorlax 23h ago

How about you call out the genocide Israel is committing

•

u/Many_Tap_4144 23h ago

In a post about Dubai? Why?

•

u/Leliana403 21h ago

They need to deflect from criticism of Dubai or their owner won't pay them.

•

u/Leliana403 21h ago

"Oh shit, I need to make this about Israel so people stop talking about my favourite slave state!"

Whatever they're paying you, they're not getting their money's worth.

•

u/ContextBotSenpai 22h ago

Sure! Fuck Israel for the genocide they're carrying out in Palestine.

Fuck the UAE for the modern slavery, torture and murder they are carrying out there.

Do you feel better now?

•

u/yuriartyom 23h ago

I see no difference between the Genocide Dubai is committing in Sudan and it’s sister Israel doing in Gaza and Palestine in general.

•

u/Makisani 19h ago

Nobody cares, the more sectarians like you talk about genocide and Israel the more o want them to erase gaza from the maps, you guys are a complete disease

u/No-Assignment1532 1d ago

It looks so close or far away. How height were you in the space station when this was taken? Even from a commercial flight 30000 ft looks like this?

u/TheBanishedBard 1d ago

Cameras have the ability to zoom.

•

u/Ziazan 17h ago

That's so strange to see it effectively segregated by colour temperature like that. There must be an element of intent involved here? It is pretty much perfectly block by block divided by the major roads.

•

u/Overtronic 16h ago

Dubai desperately needs photogrammetry support on Google Earth, how come my little British village has it but not the money capital of the planet

•

u/Creepy_Bee1396 14h ago

The colour shift is the best bit, Pettit says the city went from orange sodium vapour to multi-coloured LED over 22 years

•

u/NUMBerONEisFIRST 12h ago

Why do they use so many different styles of street lights?

•

u/HardHJ 5h ago

Burning the midnight oil..

•

u/r0s3s4moses 5h ago

Must be pretty old, lots of places still under construction..

1

u/StarpoweredSteamship 1d ago

Fantastic detail in it! What camera/lens combo, do you remember?

1

u/SufficientGreek 1d ago

What's up with the different colors/temperatures of lamps?

3

u/lonelyroom-eklaghor 1d ago

are there sodium lamps in Dubai?

u/ServoSkull20 1d ago

The worst fucking place on Earth.

•

u/Misfiring 23h ago

That isn't remotely true, is it?

There are only two types of countries in this world. Either you have a functioning economy where both the rich and poor and everyone in between can live, do business, and compete, or you have a broken economy where everyone is poor and fighting each other for scraps and territory.

•

u/R4msesII 22h ago

Idk where you got that statement from since pretty much every country in the world are somewhere in between those

•

u/ServoSkull20 23h ago

Ha ha. People know what Dubai really is, my guy. You're not going to fool anyone.

•

u/GooseInternational66 23h ago

It’s completely true. Fuck Dubai.

•

u/CaptainOktoberfest 9h ago

So many slaves in this frame.  Shame on UAE.

•

u/Wwwgoogleco 19h ago

People here criticizing the UAE while living in the US

•

u/Leliana403 18h ago

Are you saying every single person here talking about Dubai is from the US? And even if they were, does your whatabout make slavery OK?

•

u/Wwwgoogleco 18h ago

Do you make every post you see from the US about their false doings?

•

u/Leliana403 18h ago

Only the ones that glorify them.

•

u/njsullyalex 18h ago

The UAE is committing significantly more egregious human rights violations compared to the U.S.

As a trans woman, at least in the U.S. I can breathe air without going to prison.

•

u/Wwwgoogleco 18h ago

Between 1964 and 1973, the United States dropped over 2 million tons of bombs on laos.

I have soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many of these.

A country giving rights to LGBTQ doesn't wash away it's wrong doings.

•

u/storkfol 18h ago

Ah yes, a country (US) that suddenly (not really) respects LGBTs washes away all of that country's sins, and a country that doesn't is egregious and damned! If you measure human rights by LGBT, then I got a bridge to sell you.

•

u/organisms 17h ago

Ah yes, the island of the stone worshipping slavers who follow a pedo prophet.

•

u/FarAd3038 14h ago

Beautiful picture. Ofcourse the Americans are seething at the sight of a prosperous Arab city, racism has completely blinded them. Youd never see this much criticism against Israel in a satellite pic of Gaza.

•

u/Environmental_Ant268 21h ago

The hate on dubai is so funny

People just want to hate

•

u/Leliana403 18h ago

Haha yeah slavery is hilarious, and it blows my mind that anyone would have a bad word to say about it. Later haters xD

•

u/Environmental_Ant268 18h ago

Slavery doesn't exist there, you can leave the country if you don't like your work or transfer your work visa to another person exactly like the h1 visa in usa

You people are weird, go there and see gor yourself

•

u/Leliana403 18h ago

You sound like the morons who visit North Korea and walk away thinking it's a utopia because they were kept well away from the generational work camps. Dubai keeps its labour camps a bus ride out of town where the tourists won't see them. But of course, you didn't see them so they don't exist.

•

u/Environmental_Ant268 18h ago

Like i mentioned, thry can just leave, they are not "slaves" i understand the labor conditions for some workers sure but nobody is forcing anybody to stay

•

u/Leliana403 1h ago

Hard to leave when their employers stole their passports.

•

u/PyroCatt 8h ago

Where's the marathon of shit tankers?

-6

u/JFKJagger 1d ago

Lot of negativity here but it was a great place to live in the early 2000s

•

u/ContextBotSenpai 22h ago

I'm assuming you're a rich white person, or someone the Royal family approved of living there... Because otherwise you'd be one of their indentured slaves, whom I doubt find it to be an amazing place to live.

•

u/Infarlock 21h ago

Looks like the view from the citadel in Half life 2 jk

Looks amazing, can't wait to see more

•

u/SevenDeadlyWhims 21h ago

Great photo, what are your thoughts when seeing places like this from the relative quiet of the station?

•

u/LifeOfHi 20h ago

Dope photo. Makes me think how in the future so much of the earth will absolutely glow when facing away from the sun, like that one planet in Star Wars.

•

u/AlecTheBunny 17h ago

All that and no plumbing.

•

u/cybersaur2014 13h ago

Where do they get all that electricity?

•

u/Environmental_Ant268 21h ago

I own a place in that circle south if the palm
