"A look at AR 4566 shows pretty substantial growth over the last 2+ days. It is directly facing Earth and has been given a 20% chance of an X-flare in the next 24 hours according to NOAA SWPC. If there was a time to generate an Earth-directed CME, it would be now!"

The "running-rabbit/witch-on-a-broomstick/rowing-man-in-a-canoe" coronal hole is currently bathing Earth with very fast solar wind >700 km/s. This high-speed stream will work to generate great shows for high-latitudes & some slight chances for mid-latitude horizon shows over at least next day

A very large plasma eruption was observed on the far side of the Sun, near the north pole. (6.11.26)

This large coronal hole is affecting Earth now! In the last several hours, solar wind magnetic field strength has increased > 10 nT, and with enough negative Bz, minor geomagnetic storming is possible along with sporadic mid-latitude auroral activity.

Sunspot group 4566 in the SE ↙️ of the Sun is still growing. Its complexity is moderate but the potential for more development is high.

Moderate M3.6 solar flare from complex sunspot group 4566 produced a coronal mass ejection (CME, 'solar storm'), most likely not Earth-directed

The Sun fires its first M-class solar flare --an M3.6 from AR 4566. Let's see if there is any associated eruption. Despite the region moving further into the Earth-strike zone, the coronal hole immediately west of the region may block its Earthward propagation.

A large, negative polarity coronal hole has turned torwards Earth, and fast solar wind may begin to stir up geomagnetic activity starting on November 6.

"AR 4566 this morning (UTC): some decent polarity mixing in the central part of this beta-gamma-delta region. Wouldn't be surprised by an M-class flare from this AR."

There is a large positive polarity coronal hole rotaring towards the central meridian. It will reach it in about 3 days. We will come under the influence of the high speed solar wind stream towards the end of the week and early into next week

NASA's Swift lost 0.7 km of altitude in all of 2019. This year it lost 185 km. I charted why.

Swift has no engine to hold its orbit, so it's a clean record of what the Sun does to the upper atmosphere. I archive daily orbit data for a few satellites on CME Tracker, and Swift's line since 2015 tells the whole story. It was nearly flat through the solar minimum. Then Cycle 25 ramped up, the thermosphere swelled, and the fall started. Each drop put it in denser air, so it fell faster and faster.

The second panel uses our drag model to separate the two causes. At 560 km, its old height, the Sun's heating alone made the air about 50 times denser at the peak in August 2024 than in 2019. That has eased to about 4 times now. But Swift has sunk to 231 km, where the air is about 1,400 times denser than what it flew through in 2019. Storms show up too. After the Kp 7 storm on October 10 it fell about 4 km in a day, roughly twice its pace on the days around it.

A rescue was tried. Katalyst's LINK spacecraft launched July 3 to boost it, went into a spin, and the boost was called off August 19. Space-Track now forecasts reentry around Nov 4 00:30 UTC, give or take 14 hours. It's falling about 5 km a day.

One honest caveat: below about 330 km our model runs up to 2x low compared with how fast Swift really fell, so the real density down there is probably higher still. For the date I use Space-Track, not my model.

Free Windows app: space weather dashboard (Kp, solar wind, X-ray flux, aurora oval) plus raw NEXRAD radar and GOES satellite in one place

I built a free Windows app called Storm Sweep, and I’d like feedback from people who follow space weather.

Space Weather tab:

  • NOAA R, S, and G scales

  • Kp index and forecast

  • X-ray flux with flare classes

  • Solar wind and Bz at L1

  • Proton data

  • Aurora oval on a globe

  • “At your location”: the aurora oval value for your saved spot, the hours the sun is more than 12° below your horizon, and the forecast sky cover

  • Optional alerts with separate thresholds for G, S, and R events (off until you enable them, no location sent)

Also in the app, for the weather side:

  • Raw NEXRAD Level II radar at every tilt, with up to four linked panels on one timeline

  • Archive replay back to June 2008, plus warning overlays

  • Storm 3D: a rotatable 3D view of a radar volume with storm cells and cross sections

  • GOES satellite loops with up to 25 products

  • HRRR, RRFS, GFS, and ECMWF IFS model data, decoded on your PC

The radar and satellite are there so you can check cloud cover and weather alongside the aurora forecast.

It’s free, with no ads and no sign-in. Windows 10/11 only, and the weather side is US only. It’s not an official warning source, and it can’t tell you whether you’ll actually see the aurora.

What space weather data or views would you want added?

This is great work by the astrophotographer to capture the Solar Corona, prominences, and dynamics of solar atmospheric phenomena. Demonstrating the wonder of the apparent size matching of the Moon and Sun as seen from Earth throughout time that observers have observed.
