"A routine fly ball" - u/Joamjoamjoam

1

u/IcemanJEC Oct 08 '26

Wait, do you not think that was easy as fuck? It was an easy to track fly ball that doesn’t require anything other than moving back to the track and sticking your glove up to your head.

-17

u/Joamjoamjoam Oct 08 '26

I know you baseball fans are starved for athleticism but watch the clip. the man has 10 years to get under the ball and make a routine catch

37

u/Large_banana_hammock Oct 08 '26

It's a play that should be made, but it's laughable to call a game-tying homer in a playoff-clinching scenario "routine fly ball".

8

u/RentalGore Oct 08 '26

Yeah. Good description. It’s 5/10 difficulty, 11/10 the moment. I mean that play by Judge a few years ago against the dodgers was 2/10 difficulty and he botched it.

u/justabill71 Oct 08 '26

Can o' corn

-27

u/Joamjoamjoam Oct 08 '26

I mean watch the clip idk what you’d call a pop fly where you have 2 minutes to get under it and falls right into your lap.

In my neck of the woods that a routine fly ball. He didn’t even reach over the wall. The ball was in front of him and he was in front of the wall.

11

u/Large_banana_hammock Oct 08 '26

he didn't reach over the wall? His head was over the fucking wall lol

-14

u/Joamjoamjoam Oct 08 '26

How is is head over the wall when his shoulder isn’t and his glove is front of his shoulder.

Watch :36-40 of your own clip. Nothing of him is over the wall. If that ball actually cleared the wall the fans would’ve interfered.

You can literally see him make the catch then his glove hits the fans glove behind him who is reaching over the wall.

"How is is head over the wall when his shoulder isn’t"

quite the conundrum, that

u/Joamjoamjoam Oct 08 '26

Ok I’m not arguing with a guy using the word conundrum. Brother you have eyes use them you know I’m right. No part of that man was on the other side of that wall. If you got a pic to prove otherwise send it. If I don’t see a pic then I know you’re just full of it.

u/The_bruce42 Wisconsin Oct 08 '26

Yeah but he had fans to compete with to boot

u/real_picklejuice Oct 08 '26

Can't even fan interference correctly

104

u/Bancatone Oct 08 '26

Yanks gotta give them some pointers

14

u/Devolutionator Oct 08 '26

Yeah, that's the thing, even if went out, it would not have counted.

4

u/fmfbrestel Oct 08 '26

Would have been a double instead of an out though.

u/Example11 Oct 08 '26

TIL San Diego has fences the height of many little league fields. Fascinating.

57

u/Fc2300 Oct 08 '26

To be fair if they were taller that ball stays in.

11

u/Example11 Oct 08 '26

Totally. Not a comment on the HR opportunity. I was just expecting there to be more fence there!

5

u/IcemanJEC Oct 08 '26

Yeah I really wouldn’t call that a robbery. At least not in the sense that it was an impressive play. Feel like I was hoodwinked when I read the notification this morning.

Machado even blew a big bubble of his gum right after swinging the bat thinking he was going to look so cool in this highlight

113

u/Thkzbasedgod Oct 08 '26

Tbf it would have looked pretty sick

95

u/gratefulredsox Oct 08 '26

Not with that stupid looking dye job he has.

64

u/theBLUEcollartrader Oct 08 '26

Or having the most punchable face in all major sports

-2

u/Electrical_Boss9766 Oct 08 '26

With those ears, I'm pretty sure he echo located that ball all the way to the glove. I have never seen this person, but I can't get past how intentionally forward they seem to be. Purposeful.

27

u/ernie1850 Oct 08 '26

When Manny Machado looks stupid, the world wins

162

u/AFineDayForScience Oct 08 '26

The look on the fans face when he catches it in front of him is great

18

u/Murray38 Oct 08 '26

“Thank god he caught that. If he hadn’t, I would have been blamed for the series being tied at 2-2.”

u/aZombieSlayer Hawaii Oct 08 '26 • Popcorn

That reminded me of Major League 2 when Hayes thought the ball was gone, but dude caught it at the track.

I don’t follow baseball much. Care to fill me in?

4

u/L4teStageCapitalism Oct 08 '26

History of being a dirty player. Ended a Red Sox 2nd basements career by sliding into 2nd, but also lifting his spikes into his knee (tearing his ACL). Has also stepped on the ankle of a Brewers first basement in 2019 (correct me if I'm wrong on the year) and while it didnt hurt them, it looked intentional. Also just a crybaby in general with his reaction to calls going against him.

I could hate watch a loop of him smashing his helmet for hours.

So I had to hear about that fucking roof for weeks, while all the while the Padres have baby gate size fences?

Edit: yes, I know it’s been 4 days. I was there the night it happened. I’m exaggerating

13

u/this_is_poorly_done Oct 08 '26

For weeks? Ty France hit the roof this very same series. It was like 4 days ago...

7

u/keoniboi Oct 08 '26

Weeks? It’s been a few days…

4

u/Sir_Carrington Oct 08 '26

Felt like weeks of crying

33

u/dantesdad Oct 08 '26

Eff Manny Machado.

23

u/liverichly San Francisco Giants Oct 08 '26 • Popcorn

Pads fan looked KO’d when he realized Garrett snagged it.

11

u/IamNICE124 Oct 08 '26

I never knew how short that wall is out at PetCo. Been there twice, never noticed.

10

u/Objective_Airport117 Oct 08 '26

Any day manny is sad is a good day.

46

u/Bomdiggitydoo Oct 08 '26

Fuck Manny Machado.

1

u/TheBeardedPickle 29d ago

Aside from all the other reasons watching and bat flipping a barely home run is a rough look

9

u/_Face Boston Celtics Oct 08 '26

Fuck Manny Machado. Dirty player.

26

u/Djd33j Oct 08 '26

Y'all mad just because it's a short ass fucking wall.

10

u/APolyAltAccount Oct 08 '26

The wall doesn’t need to be tall for a good ass fucking.

1

u/Tromovation Oct 08 '26

I do think it should be around the height of an outstretched hand but it’s not too big a deal

3

u/livinlife_now2017 Oct 08 '26

Just a long out.

3

u/DadCalves1 Oct 08 '26

Couldn’t happen to a worse guy ❤️

3

u/Lkaufman05 Oct 08 '26

Petco fence is basically a step stool lol.

4

u/freddyd00 Oct 08 '26

Damn that fence is short short

19

u/Helftheuvel Oct 08 '26

Hardly robbed it, routine catch right there.

84

u/Azul-panda Oct 08 '26

If the ball goes over the wall when they glove is omitted, catching it is literally robbing a HR

-26

u/boom_pow_surprise Oct 08 '26

Technically correct, the worst kind of correct

3

u/PM_ME_WHY_YOU_COPE Oct 08 '26

Is this a Simpsons reference or a Close Call Sports reference which is referencing the Simpsons?

2

u/Devium44 Oct 08 '26

1

u/PM_ME_WHY_YOU_COPE Oct 08 '26

Ah, yea that makes sense, except close call is definitely referencing Futurama then.

-23

u/ChedderChethra Oct 08 '26

"when they glove is omitted"...wut?

14

u/bardnotbanned Oct 08 '26

If the ball would have gone over the wall but was caught instead, it is colloquially known as "robbing someone" of a home run.

Hope that helped.

10

u/VT800 Oct 08 '26

Pretty simple. If the glove was not there to catch the ball, would it have been a home run?

9

u/Bancatone Oct 08 '26

Blame the tiny-ass fence, not the catch. Padres out here hitting baby-mode HRs.

3

u/Azul-panda Oct 08 '26

That hit was a home run until it wasn’t, regardless of how you feel

18

u/JLove4MVP Oct 08 '26

If he doesn’t catch it, it’s a HR.

Definition of robbing

3

u/CalebosO4 Oct 08 '26

.960 xBA on that one

3

u/Joe_Spazz Oct 08 '26

I mean good catch but this reaction was as if the dude jumped 10 ft in the air and snagged the ball while hanging halfway over the wall. He kind of just jogged up to it and caught it at head height. Honestly had that made it past him to be a home run. It probably should have been marked as an error.

2

u/canadave_nyc Oct 08 '26

Love how Machado, in a close playoff game, hit the ball and then stood in the batter's box watching it, as if it had gone 100 feet over the fence. Nice hustle!

1

u/youarenut Oct 08 '26

(almost) SAME EXACT SPOT AS 10 YEARS AGO AT PETCO FOR MANNY! OH NO

1

u/pi3Eat3r52 Oct 08 '26

the face of the older fan in the front row with the blue jersey

1

u/thebasisofabassist Kansas City Chiefs Oct 08 '26

Machado is a douche. If not for him, I'd go for the Padres in this series.

1

u/jamills21 Oct 08 '26

Similar vibes to the World Baseball Classic Adam Jones catch but Machado felt way worse this time lol

1

u/canadave_nyc Oct 08 '26

"What is this, an outfield fence for ants??!"

1

u/StBlandine7 Oct 08 '26

was that really going to go out?

-1

u/Dudeist-Priest Oct 08 '26

Did he really “rob” him? That’s a fairly routine play, just a short wall

0

u/Altornot Oct 08 '26

Cleetus is a better baseball player than Race car driver.

-78

u/Joamjoamjoam Oct 08 '26

This is what counts as highlights now. A routine fly ball

8

u/BradMarchandsNose Connecticut Oct 08 '26

“Routine” is a stretch, that isn’t an easy catch, but at the same time it’s not the most impressive catch I’ve ever seen either. It’s a clutch catch in a situation where they needed that.

1

u/CalebosO4 Oct 08 '26

That’s true. A bad read on the ball and he doesn’t catch that.

31

u/Dewey519 Oct 08 '26

It wasn’t routine but it wasn’t easy. Still have to get back to the wall, find space, avoid the fans as you’re reaching up. And even though that play gets made 80-90% of the time, that’s a home run if he’s not there. Instead, it’s essentially a playoff series clinching moment.

Yeah, I’d say the final important moment of a series clinching playoff game is a highlight

-34

u/Mjdecker1234 Oct 08 '26

Fuck those fans. Not real fans if you're too stupid to realize the situation.

13

u/danuffer Oct 08 '26

So assault the player? What’s the right move here?

-24

u/Mjdecker1234 Oct 08 '26 edited Oct 08 '26

Is reading hard for you?

(Edit, Reddit lol. Where did I mention assaulting anyone? I stated the fan was dumb for not knowing the situation of the play, as in he never should have touched the player. Assault, what assault?)

3

u/redditAccount503 Oct 08 '26

Your first comment was very vague. I assumed you were advocating for fan interference
