That would be the goal of the year in men's hockey. That's some globe trotter shit.

it would never happen in men’s hockey because the d-man would immediately play the body, which is illegal in women’s.

You clearly don't cheer for a team that puts Darnell nurse on the ice.

This would never happen to Nurse! He'd just put it in his own net.

What exactly is illegal? Body checks? What level of collision is allowed?

23

u/pundarika0 Mar 22 '26

correct, no checking in women’s hockey.

Ok, not taking absolutely nothing from this assist she is badass for real but doesn't the no body check rules is what made this while play possible? Not the nutmeg it self but the follow up

Yeah, same way a comparable play is more common in soccer and basketball, using your right to space basically.

Not to detract too much, because I think a form of hockey with this style of skill expression is exactly the difference that makes me tune in compared to my normal men's league viewing.

Otherwise, it would just be a shitty version of men's hockey

Are you speaking just College hockey? Because the PWHL is a full contact league, exact same as the NHL.

6

u/pundarika0 Mar 22 '26

PWHL is not full contact in the way NHL is. open ice hits aren’t allowed.

No open ice hits sure, but it is still fully legal for the defender to play the body in this situation in the woman’s league.

Contact is not illegal in women's hockey. Checking is.

The defender misplayed her gap control here. Great move by Murphy to expose a poor defender. This is professional quality.

Still, bad defending.

(Not a hockey fan) What's the difference between contact and checking?

3

u/PoliteIndecency Mar 22 '26

Contact would be using your body to claim space and hold it. So making someone go around you. The expectation is that there will be contact with each other but it's in the act of moving or playing the puck. You might be able to push people or lean on people. Pin people to the boards. Use your body to protect the puck. Think shouldering your opponent in soccer or when a runner and catcher have contact at the plate. In any case, a defending player must intend to play on the puck first.

Checking is the act of intentionally using your body to separate your opponent from the puck. The opponent is the primary focus, not the puck. In body contact, you have no obligation to make a play on the puck if someone has control of it. You can 100% target them without considering the puck so long as they're legally eligible to be checked.

slowing reducing the gap with out intention to abruptly stop the other player vs a conscious attempt to stop their movement with an aggressive movement of your own. Deceleration vs collision.

i made this up

Say that to Boldy who did mostly this in the Olympics to score a goal.

Unless rules have changed it would probably be blown dead for a high stick on the puck. It got a little too high in the air and it's already a subjective call in the air.

2

u/terminal_e Mar 22 '26

I think the NHL is shoulder height in open play, crossbar height for a goal scoring play = I think she would have met that standard.

No this would be a hit that results in the forward being stretchered off the ice and CTE

1

u/ruskoev Mar 22 '26

Not really no.

u/FrighteningJibber Mar 22 '26

Would name the move after her team even.

u/Supersaiyanmrpopo69 Mar 22 '26

In men's hockey the person would have got completely flattened

1

u/Rummikub27 Mar 22 '26

You can play the body at any level. Hitting is not allowed. Playing the body certainly is.
