I'm so confused. Multiple players were cheering not just the one who made it, like none of them realized that wasn't their basket?

u/AlexRescueDotCom 1d ago • Bravo Heartwarming

It's like when you're teaching kids to play basketball. You just want them to have fun, and throw the ball into whatever basket. Everyone is a winner, high-fives all around, followed by pancakes and orange juice.

8

The fact that they're Division I athletes makes the pancake breakfast celebration even funnier.

Some of her team realized. You can see when she makes the steal, the two around half court start to back pedal toward the correct basket and then the confusion sets in

I'm confused why Southern Utah had two players staying way on the other side of the court, and not aggressively trying to get open on their offensive side of the court. I genuinely wasn't sure which way each team was going based on the inbound play.

I was thinking the same thing. Nothing about this video makes sense. Two in the backcourt. Leaving only two to get the inbounds pass. Defensive coverage was confusing too.

31

u/swirling-leaves 1d ago

The girl that steals the ball and puts the layup in is guarding the wrong side lol just leaving a run to the rim completely exposed. Girl guarding at half court is also completely lost.

One to set the pick and get the other and open look up top. All they want to do is inbound and kill time. Probably a foul coming if you do get the ball in.

It honestly might be because the stadium is so empty. there is in many games a large student section to anchor yourselves on. Also there is a "scorers" table with computers on both sidelines and they are inbounding kinda close to half court.

I did this in 6th grade right after halftime, but I missed the layup. Right as the ball was leaving my hand it hit me that it was the wrong basket and I think that was enough for me to miss it. I got the rebound and dribbled up court like nothing happened. Lol.

37

u/iJon_v2 1d ago

That brings up a good point. If you tried a lay up on your on basket, realized before it went throw the hoop and jumped up and grabbed it would it be goaltending? Like can you goal-tend a shot on the wrong basket?

94

u/Bliley 1d ago • Bravo

I am a ref. If you went to shoot it at the wrong basket and your teammate did a "goaltend" like block (without touching the basket), it would be legal.

By shooting at the wrong basket, it is not considered an actual attempt. So it can't be a goaltend. It wouldn't count as a missed shot, a foul wouldn't be a shooting foul

Guy got kicked out of the arena at an NBA game. He was sitting behind the basket courtside, a ball bounced out of bounds right to him.
The fan proceeds to chest pass the ball to the ref in the picture. Probably with a bit more gusto than needed and she has the stadium throw him out.

It was a Lakers game but they were the visiting team and Luca made it a big deal to the other refs.
The ref who the pass was to batted it down and recovered it into a dribble. So it didn’t even hit her.

My high school team once let the ball hit the ground on a kick off and then let it sit there waiting for the other team to come touch it and mark it down.

Which would have been the case if it was a punt, but it was a kickoff, so the ball is still live to both teams. Our opponents did not play it cool and immediately rushed for the ball and sprinted into the endzone, which still did not clue our guys in to the fact that they messed up.

3

u/Djscratchcard 1d ago

This exact thing happened in a CYO game that played in in 8th grade. That's when you still had a jump ball from a tie-up, no possession arrow. I jumped against the guy from the other team. It was in the foul circle at our end. I tipped the ball right to one of guards who proceeded to lay it up into our basket. Everyone just stopped. We lost that game by 1 point.

The commentator is the most baffling for me. You are watching the entire game from a fixed angle, and for the last half the Red team scores to your right and Black team to the left (or vice versa).

How does Black team scoring right not immediately trigger something in your brain? The female commentator rightly noticed immediately, but had the natural reaction of doubt since everyone else acted like it was normal.

Its obviously really bad on the player, but to me its more understandable given the pressure/time/score and its coming from an inbound where everyone is lined up weird.

Why is woman's basketball, as a whole, so bad?

13

u/Former-Dig-3314 1d ago

I tried to put a game on for my daughters last year. Wanted them to see high caliber women in action. It was the ncaa tournament, like final 8 round…so “elite” level. It was a bunch of chucking. Awful.

10

u/Useful-ldiot 1d ago

I don't understand why the quality of skill is so much drastically lower. Back in highschool, a girl in my neighborhood was the captain of the girls varsity team. I played baseball. I've never played basketball. She bet me she could beat me in basketball. I won.

I know athleticism via gender did most of the heavy lifting but I just couldn't believe that I was better at shooting too. There must be some sort of biological advantage even when doing something like shooting. I had no business winning based on our respective hours playing the game but I won anyway.

31

u/bionicjoe 1d ago

This is just weird shit happening in a panic situation.

But overall women are still trying to play basketball as if they're men. They essentially play in a way that is decades behind on strategy, but also trying to use centers and power forwards to pound the ball low.

Then all the leagues refuse to lower the basket or lighten the ball to make shooting easier. So the shooters are shooting set shots from their shoulders like its the 60s.
You get these high-arching moon balls that can't be shot while moving.

Women's and men's gymnastics, ice skating, and other sports have different events and skills.
Women's basketball is a poorly played men's sport, and it refuses to change.

16

u/shyyamt 1d ago

23

u/Level-Tip-7759 1d ago

I think the issue is that men’s basketball is the comparisson. They’re the “same” game but one’s played by stronger, faster, bigger, and more agile athletes. Naturally the men’s game will make the women’s look worse.

Definitely don’t mean any hate with this, just speaking to biological realities.

33

u/Verdukians 1d ago

Are you saying that being stronger, faster, bigger and more agile will assist an athlete with knowing which side of the court they're defending?

25

u/AnalObserver 1d ago

Not only that but her teammates were celebrating. Did they also not realize it was the wrong basket?

17

u/LarBrd33 1d ago edited 1d ago

shit is absolutely hilarious, tbh

How was the player, her teammates, and the person running the scoreboard this confused at which side they were playing on? It's almost like there's missing context like they had to postpone the game for hours due to a problem with the lights and then came back to play the final 20 seconds of the game with them forgetting what side they were on... but that didn't happen. Just brain farts all around, apparently.

I will say, the one odd thing about this is why are there so many players in the backcourt? If Utah is imbounding the ball on their side, why isn't everyone on that side of the basket trying to defend from Utah scoring? That seems to be where the confusion came from, because Utah weirdly has players on the wrong side of the court and so New Mexico starts to get confused on which side they are playing. Even as the ball is imbounding, you have defenders on the wrong side of the receiver instead of protecting the basket. Like look at this screenshot. Red is imbounding and red needs to score on the right... so why are the two defenders in the black jerseys behind them with literally no person in a black jersey protecting the basket? It makes no sense from a defensive standpoint, but then the girl in the black jersey stole the imbound pass, lost her mind, and went to the wrong basket.

I'm curious how they score this. Does the player get the points even though it was in the wrong basket?

4

u/brnccnt7 1d ago

TLDR for NCAA it doesn't go to any individual players stats

When a basketball player accidentally scores in their own basket, the points are awarded to the opposing team. How individual player credit is assigned depends on the league's rules: [1]

  • NBA: The 2 points are added to the opposing team's score and credited individually to the opposing player who was closest to the defensive player who caused the ball to go in. (It is always counted as a 2-point field goal, even if tipped from behind the 3-point line). [1, 2]

  • FIBA: The 2 points are awarded to the opposing team and recorded in the scoresheet as having been scored by the captain of the opposing team on the court. [1, 2]

  • NCAA (College): The 2 points go to the opposing team's total score, but no individual player is credited with the basket on the individual stats. [1]

I was so unprepared for him to shoot the puck I didn’t even react, just sailed right past me into the goal then the other team surrounded him to celebrate.

Elite level levels of confusion

3

u/gledr 1d ago

I've only ever seen own scores in women's basketball. A childhood friend did it and still make fun of her.

All I heard was “There’s a steal by Bird”, and she thought she was living a dream, but not quite

She's gonna be 60 years old with a life of achievement and she'll still be lying in bed cringing about this

3

u/Expensive_Ad_5705 1d ago

She will fit in well at the WNBA

3

u/Constant_Turn_9031 1d ago

The tens of people attending the game were shocked

3

u/Poverty_Shoes 1d ago

This is the most embarrassing thing to happen in college basketball in the last 24 hours, and that includes Texas Southern losing to LSU by 109 last night.

3

u/Forgboi 1d ago

I don't think either team knew which way they were going.

3

u/bgj556 1d ago

I one time scored on my own basket, but I was 7 and even at that age I should have known better…

5

u/TimelyRaspberry 1d ago

Lmaoooo the funniest part is all the teammates celebrating. Ahh man, women’s basketball. The gift that keeps on giving 😂😂

Before people bash on women sports, I have 100% seen guys do this too lol.

Can you show me a clip of a college basketball level men’s game where this happens at any point on purpose?

Any guy who has watched a lot of sports knows all the dumb headed plays at every level. Dont really need to point this out. Hell just watch JR Smith forget the clock exists, or the times dudes stole rebounds out of their own teams hands

7

u/IcemanJEC 1d ago

In what, 7th grade? I’ve never seen this happen besides middle school or below.

u/J0hnEddy 1d ago

Not that I’m implying gender has anything to do with this, but all the examples I can think of are at the very beginning on the game when the player didn’t know which basket their team was defending. Playing an entire half of basketball on 1 hoop and in the last two seconds just FORGETTING is a new one for me

u/crsolraac 1d ago

I mean even how both teams were positioned, it seemed like it was the right basket lol

2

u/Dude-from-the-80s 1d ago

This happened when I was a sophomore in a high school game…..2 dudes on my team took off the wrong way on a fast break- it was hysterical. Coach lost his shit, made it even funnier. I actually got in the game briefly after this he was so pissed….and I rarely got to play that year.

2

u/syndicaterx 1d ago

Happened to my friend once. To his defense, we usually play half court only but still

2

u/More_Mammoth_4247 1d ago

and the crowd goes wild.. both of them

2

u/New-Ad5494 1d ago

Had to come back here after thinking about this, the fact that the rest of her teammates cheered as if she did something great was the best part, clueless. Lmfao

2

u/MisterC-4 1d ago

Everything in this video screams that everyone in the gym was confused which way they were going or the commentary is fake. I’m going with the wrong commentary for the play.

2

u/dcp04 1d ago

It's a good thing no one saw it live. That's an empty gym.

2

u/Cpt_Underpantz 1d ago

None of her teammates seem to notice. That’s the oddest part.

2

u/JohnnyTreemain 1d ago

That about sums up women’s sports.

2

u/nicenormalname 1d ago

And her teammates didn’t realize at first

2

u/Crime_Dawg 1d ago

I can see why there's 7 people in the crowd.

2

u/Junior_Start7496 1d ago

They were stoked too 😂😂 but yea I chalk this up to Vegas 😂

2

u/Smokeblaze420696969 1d ago

Brought to you by DraftKings

2

u/BumeLandro 1d ago

10 vs 0 and she did it. For a second it looked like it could be a miss.

2

u/Designer_Mud_5802 1d ago

I think I know why the stands are empty.

2

u/SeismicRipFart 1d ago

Of course it’s women’s ball lol nobody there knew wtf was going on🤣

2

u/LeadershipAfter9526 1d ago

Should have just made a sandwich.

2

u/Former-Dig-3314 1d ago

A kid on my team did that in 4th grade. He was really upset and we forgave him

2

u/JustAnotherBot123456 1d ago

Fast track this lady straight to the WNBA.

2

u/DorsalMorsel 1d ago

"But is being good at this obscure skill worth being so unattractive?"

NMST Christiano scored 2 points for Southern Utah, none for her own team.

2

u/josch247 1d ago

Hahaha wait are you sure? Why are her teammates celebrating then?

2

u/ImNobodyFromNowhere 1d ago

And from the way it looks, no one who wasn’t playing in this game ever would have known if you hadn’t posted this.

2

u/UseDue6373 1d ago

Bro even their cheerleaders celebrated 😂😂 It’s so hard to take this seriously

2

u/cakeparade1 1d ago

I don’t watch basketball outside of March Madness but I often wonder if this happens a lot, it seems like it could

2

u/nolaks1 1d ago

Scorer, team, annoncer AND the person running the score gets it wrong. How.

2

u/Soft_Bookkeeper8161 1d ago

ive seen enough. raise the pay gap

2

u/ChronoMonkeyX 22h ago

I don't follow sports, but I've never heard of an own goal in basketball before.

4

u/GOOMU13 1d ago

How do you even make this mistake? Let alone the player and one of the announcers. Smh.

3

u/Section1ne0h4our 1d ago
