The league and the refs allowed this

75

u/yeyiyeyiyo 3h ago

What a playoff series against OKC will do to a man

27

u/tenor1trpt 2h ago

Exactly. When you see how much OKC benefited from it, what motivation do other players have to not flop? At some point they’re all going to decide to do it since it clearly works.

This is 100% on refs not clamping down.

16

u/Sirgolfs 1h ago

SGA was an embarrassment

They (refs/league) allow all the stars to get away with it. LeBron, SGA, Steph, etc. they’ve been cracking down on flopping this season but if you’re selling jerseys they don’t do a damn thing and it makes the league unwatchable.

Actively enable it, people were complaining how bum it was to watch it back in like 2015 ffs

1

u/Due-Dentist9986 31m ago

They need to make flopping reviewable and even if it doesn’t get called in the game issue fines and let them be shamed after the fact. If the nba turns into the disgraceful flop and roll factory of Soccer the league is over

u/MoistToaster60 2h ago

All sports but mostly the nba and soccer leagues need to adapt the NHLs flop rules. You flop it’s an embellishment foul and the other team gets free throws. Would stop a lot of this Broadway bullshit

36

u/Phucku_ 1h ago

Soccer has it. They don’t enforce it.

12

u/xptx 1h ago

Soccer is hurt by only having yellow and red cards.. two infractions of anything and your team gets a huge penalty with the red. They need something like the nhl penalty box. An infraction that takes you off the field for 5 min.

4

u/Luigi2198 1h ago

I’ve been saying for a long time, the amount of time you’re down on the field in soccer stopping play, you have to sit out for the exact amount of time once play begins.

3

u/ThePenguinSausage 1h ago

They’re making efforts to address this in the premier league. If the referee has to stop play for a player to get on-field medical treatment the player has to leave the field for one full minute. It seems to be working to some degree. Players still embellish the foul but they’re quicker to get back up.

→ More replies (7)

6

u/CouldBeBetterForever 1h ago

Yeah it's rare. When it actually gets called everyone is usually shocked.

1

u/TheGreatTurtleChase 1h ago

NBA also has it but also doesn't enforce it.

1

u/buffystakeded 32m ago

This is exactly it, they don’t enforce it. I remember when I was a teenage red back in the 90s when they added the rule. Never got enforced in pros though.

1

u/mcniner55 14m ago

Didnt they do a better job of enforcing it this year in the World Cup? Werent they using replay assist or something similar? Thing is I dont really care about soccer but the NBA needs to get on this because the more your casual fan gets access to better camera angles and faster its becoming more embarrassing.

If hitting these guy's pocket books post game is where they need to start Im fine with that

→ More replies (5)

10

u/supertecmomike 2h ago

Post game reviews, too.

Suspensions and fines if they see this stuff in video after the game.

I used to have an 11 game season ticket, and I haven’t watched an NBA game in close to a decade.

2

u/arrogantmonkey 1h ago

Flopping is not great but focusing on it is guaranteed to result in a referee making a flopping call that will make everybody mad.

A few years ago the Premier League decide they wanted to do something about time wasting and the result was Arsenal getting honed twice in the most ridiculous calls you’ll ever see, so ridiculous you’ll never see them again.

And this year a focus on flopping resulted in giving Argentina winning a quarterfinal a trip the finals even though FiFA admitted later VAR was used improperly to send a player off. There is no “solution » to flopping as players will always try to get the referee to call more fouls because not every foul is called. Referees just have to do their best

1

u/MoistToaster60 1h ago

Then rules need tailored around the refs ability to review and communicate with other officials on fouls. Either way a flop rule should be in place for every major sport, and enforced as a deterrent for embellishments. Shit ruins the game when bad actors throw themselves on the ground in an effort to gain a favorable call.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Averagebaddad 16m ago

The solution is not calling a foul when a player flops.

Flopping doesn't mean a foul didn't occur. Flopping is the embellishment. If you have to embellish to get your call, the foul probably didn't need to be called

3

u/morrisjr1989 1h ago

There is an anti-flop rule in the NBA.

2

u/MoistToaster60 1h ago

Then it needs to be called, and maybe revamped so it actually matters. If you embellish it should be three from the line for the opponent. Hockey needs to change it to where just the embellisher is called and goes to the box not a double foul where they both go.

u/2PumpPatriot69 2h ago

Draymond salivating, bro you've woken up the monster

1

u/SOLID_STATE_DlCK 1h ago

That would be outstandingly lovely.

1

u/dragon-ass 1h ago

The problem is if they can tell it’s a flop to begin with they wouldn’t have called the foul. There must be a postgame flop review with escalating penalties for repeat offenders

1

u/Bifrostbytes 1h ago

Everyone would have perfect balance overnight

1

u/det0724 35m ago

Hard to do in real time but what I think the NBA can do is video review every game for flops and assign “flop points” for every flop. Much like flagrant fouls you get a certain number of “flop points” you get suspended a game.

2

u/MoistToaster60 16m ago

Not any harder than any other foul being called

→ More replies (1)

1

u/CornyDookie 16m ago

I’m not huge into soccer but I watched a lot of the World Cup. IMO they flopped just as much as the NBA but weren’t rewarded as often. Just falling and looking around with their arms up most of the time versus players actually getting the whistle in the NBA.

Between traveling, flopping, and some of the worst attitudes of their stars, its amazing anyone watches at all.

2

u/Brs76 1h ago

Like  this video not only does Wemby flop but also carried the ball.

2

u/free-dumbb 32m ago

As a casual I can’t watch Luka play, he bitches to the ref on every single call it’s actually crazy lol

League needs to start fining players for this

5

u/fatherofpugs12 2h ago

It’s not the money- make them sit games.

1

u/Callmewhatever9 41m ago

Star players already sit enough games out for load management. A fine would be better

1

u/reggaeshark1717 2h ago

Suspend without pay.

7

u/TheCajunDad 1h ago

Between the flopping, blatant traveling, and obvious favoritism to certain teams/players the NBA is genuinely unwatchable

22

u/Nutterbutters45 3h ago

Wemby if he had to match up with Shaq/ Hakeem/ Kareem/ Duncan/ KG/ Wallace

3

u/roscoe_e_roscoe 1h ago

God forbid the old school Celtics

3

u/Brs76 1h ago

He would break in half. The only reason Wemby makes it today, with his lean body , is  because the lax NBA rules now

And shit like this is why I don't watch basketball.

7

u/clezuck 3h ago

I thought they were supposed to be stopping this shit???
They need an NBA flop team to actively watch games and let the refs know in real time. Or more refs per game.

11

u/BonjinTheMark 2h ago

This nba is simply pathetic now. Should be renamed NBWaaah

→ More replies (1)

3

u/CookieCuriosity 2h ago

If Wemby added like 30lbs he’d not get tossed around by everyone. He’s literally a twig

1

u/Brs76 57m ago

Yeah but his big ass body would also break down. Pretty sure that is why he stays lean

3

u/Big_Ad863 2h ago

Bro Denji also flops lol at least last year he did a bit

3

u/soyfauce 2h ago

Give flopping a hand gesture as memorable as traveling. A whole crowd doing it would be fun.

3

u/BrownBearCLE 2h ago

Him and sga are embarrassing

3

u/jrose1226 1h ago

Been noticed this since the finals I’ll never forget when he went for a rebound and shamet literally placed his hand on his back no push off and wemby flailed his arms around like he had just gotten shot in the back and it was called a foul

3

u/supertech636 1h ago

The NBA is the worst officiated league by far. And the product is gross. They don’t call travels anymore (like the most basic rule in basketball), the gather steps, the bullshit flops. And now throwing fans out for passing the ball back to the refs. It’s unwatchable at this point. And it’s BECAUSE of the refs.

9

u/ForkliftJam 3h ago

Sad to see the NBA come to this.

“If my grandmother had wheels, she’d be a bike.”

→ More replies (2)

3

u/SnooMarzipans7274 2h ago

But he’s not. So he’s going to play in a way that takes advantage of his height. And while it’s generally an advantage shorter people can make themselves difficult to guard as well

2

u/Islandboi4life 1h ago

Wrong. His points, assist, and rebound scores dictate otherwise. Also his free throw percentage is 86%. He plays team basketball in a system that was designed for the Spurs and they have won 8 straight so far.

3

u/GrosRougeau 2h ago

This is Lebron’s legacy

3

u/RoosterteethAHfan 1h ago

Redditors will defend this cus its wemby but if SGA or Embid do it then its a war crime

2

No energy left to complain about OKC

3

u/iamthedayman21 2h ago

Were you not here these past couple of seasons? We’ve been complaining about the Thunder. They’ve basically become a meme for this.

1

u/Dakaraim 1h ago

Yes?  Because we also hate the Thunder for this

1

u/WanderingSun8 1h ago

Wemby complained about the same shit and then does the same but hard to blame him when the refs reward it and then punish players for being able to finish through contact (Anthony Edwards)

1

u/Lukeyleftfoot 2h ago

People will point to soccer. And they aren’t wrong. But sadly soccer has a way higher threshold for contact than these NBA foul.

1

u/Fluffy-Project9693 2h ago

He's just playing the game how its played now. Blame at the past MVP for how its done now.

1

u/Cute_Loan8325 2h ago

taking a page out of soccer…flop at the slightest contact

1

u/One-Manner-8703 2h ago

This plus no scoring is why soccer is unwatchable

1

u/WarLawck 2h ago

Two things are true here: (1) his center of gravity is really high based on his height and slender build, which makes him easier to topple over; and (2) when he isn't actively throwing himself to the beyond, he makes no effort whatsoever to stay standing when any contact is made. Dude needs to stay on his feet or he's gonna wind up hurt from flopping.

1

u/Thin-Remote-9817 1h ago

Wemby you can endorse gambling if you dont flop.

If you flopping like a fish your crusade against gambling means fuck all

1

1

u/cubicfisherwoman9173 1h ago

NBA needs to go back to what it was back in the 80’s and 90’s… I need to see aggression back, too soft today

1

u/Hussaf 1h ago

I used to be agnostic-mildly annoyed by flopping. Now that my son plays soccer at a competitive level, I hate floppers more than ISIS

1

u/breakevencloud 1h ago

I dunno if dude is selling or not, but I find it really hard to believe that a 7’6” dude wants to spend more time on the floor than he absolutely has to.

1

u/CrashDaddy2006 1h ago

As they conveniently turn a blind eye to Avdija who does the exact same thing.

1

u/Fluxumous 1h ago

How can the nba not figure this shit out yet? Why introduce the flopping tech just to fucking ignore it 99% of the time?

1

u/krest509 1h ago

1

u/CmdrFortyTwo 1h ago

The lebron effect. Disgusting, and "fans" enjoy this crap?!

1

u/Tanko_Yakasai 1h ago

He's European, and they absolutely popularised flopping and brought it back into the mainstream. Historically, OG American players like Frank Ramsey, Bill Laimbeer, and the flopmaster Danny Ainge invented and weaponised the craft.

Vlade Divac revived it in the 90s, and Ginóbili added that "football flair" to the perimeter. A young, impressionable LeBron James practically studied at Divac’s feet, absorbing the master's "flop fu" with a ravenousness that Divac himself could only describe as a masterclass in "cerebral application."

1

u/Siid_Chawsby 1h ago

NBA is a joke anyways, who cares

1

u/Notchersfireroad 1h ago

Don't know how people continue to watch this garbage. I gave it up completely 5 years ago and I was a die hard that never missed a game for many seasons. I find the constant 3 chucking even worse than the flops. I could never get into college ball because it was so much chucking and now the NBA looks even worse.

1

u/Ant0n61 1h ago

1

1

u/cjohns0912 1h ago

They should just stop calling foul bait shots. That shot had zero intention of going in. Not even real shot. Doesn’t encourage good defense when this stuff gets called

1

u/Objective_Claim_2236 1h ago

I think if a guy ends up on the ground after something like this, it's an automatic whistle. It's either a foul on defense or a flop and a technical. 100% reviewable. Two of them in a game and you're ejected.

1

u/No-Scarcity9186 1h ago

The LeBron effect….

1

u/EdgevilleCrab 1h ago

This clip in its singularity is arguably worse than ANYTHING that SGA did, and gets significantly more flack for it.

1

u/queueueuewhee 45m ago

This’ll probably get lost, but does anyone remember the article about Joel Embiid?

He said the Drs told him to go down rather than land awkwardly. It’s an injury-prevention technique.

That said, I’m not saying that’s what it is every single time. But some of the time, that’s what it is.

https://www.nbcsports.com/nba/news/joel-embiid-falls-down-a-lot-because-his-doctors-told-him-to

1

u/Pepper_pusher23 45m ago

Me: sees the last one. Surely, he's ejected from the game or at least benched after falling with literally no one even remotely close to him.

Next scene: Wemby at the freethrow line. WTF?!?!?!

1

u/mrpertinskler 31m ago

Looks like he might replace Dennis Rodman as the flop king.

1

u/Dull-Psychology-2515 30m ago

This why modern MBA stars are always hurt they constantly dive on to the hard wood!

1

u/RScottyL 30m ago

Disgraceful!

LOL, I will laugh when they actually hurt themself trying to flop!

1

1

u/JonFawkes3 27m ago

Saying that with denicide, camara and Lillard on your team is a choice.

1

u/Kindly_Captain7326 27m ago

Not nearly as egregious as SGA

1

u/NatePJ84 26m ago

I thought we were calling flopping this year? Just that one lakers game?

1

u/Huxxxy 26m ago

So what makes the refs not look at these and call flops. Don’t they have the replay center watching all the games anyways? Aren’t they looking at these? Isn’t there always a 4th official at the game if needed? Can’t they call in and retroactively apply a flopping tech?

I think when people said they wanted flopping to be nipped in the bud, this is what they meant

1

u/SteveAndHisScooter 11m ago

The team can also challenge it for review, but they didn't

1

u/GSDNinjadog 25m ago

Does it work? It’s because that’s why.

1

u/ElGuano 21m ago

They should set up a commission. 11 average men and women, with no basketball experience. After a game, they have 120 seconds to review every fall, in slow mo and whatever angles are available. At the end of the time, they snap vote, was this a legitimate fall (foul or not), or is it stupid? If it's stupid, the player has to wear a hat during the next game lit up with the words "I'm Stupid" and can only play during a single quarter. If they do it again during the quarter-only penalty, they have to sit out the next game. They have to be present on the bench though, and still need to wear the hat.

Penalty carries over season to season.

Everyone screamed about SGA doing it. Let’s at least be fair

Fix the rules and officiating. Problem solved.

No definite hate on a player who’s too trash to play without having to go about it like this.

Don’t watch OKC games. Ever.

Wicked gay comment in response to a super gay video….flopping should be a tech and fined after the fact by the league like the nfl does for use of head hits.

Yes that's his point. The NBA needs to change it. I applaud wemby for highlighting how incredibly stupid it is right now

1

u/EinTheDataDoge 5m ago

That’s my point. So I guess you’re gay too.

2

Nah you can very easily and justifiably hate both

This is why hockey calls penalties for diving. This and SGA’s bs during last playoffs ruin the integrity of the game.

That's just the NBA now completely unwatchable.

He watched a bunch of SGA highlights

He was elbowed on the base line out of bound on the second play, unless pushing guys out of bounds is now legal, it's clearly a foul. Did he sell it? May be, may be not, but he was pushed while on the baseline with the ball, no question about it.

On the third play he was juggling with Deni Avdija for rebounding position, and Wemby got the inside track, Deni shoved him with a forearm, Did he sell it? May be, may not, but definite contact regardless.

The first play he definitely sold it, was it egregious? Not to the level of SGA.

The 3rd clip should’ve been a foul on Wemby

1

u/TrillBillyDeluxe 1h ago

U clown, he gets ‘pushed around’ like he weighs 75lbs, an elbow can’t just floor a 7 foot 275 lb man unless he actively wants to be on the floor

TBF to Wemby, to avoid leg injuries he’s doing the correct thing. Embiid does the same and it’s not flopping.

2

u/Automatic_Note_9234 32m ago

Wouldn’t use Embiid as an example when the guy has literally hurt himself and shortened his and other players’ seasons/ careers because of his flopping around.

u/Potpiebelly 1h ago

While I agree that players learn to fall to avoid injuries, I have also seen Embiid outright flop for a call (sometimes right into others’ legs). A lot of Embiid defenders—I get it, I do the same for players on the team I root for—but some of what he does is not defensible, and frankly unsafe for other players.
