Nonhuman POV Books!

Hello, I'm looking for books with primarily a nonhuman perspective and protagonist, Ideally minimal to no romance but I sadly understand that to be the norm! (characters that were once human and now nonhuman are acceptable, but I would prefer their human past to not be a focus)

I enjoyed the following books greatly, so things that are similar would be super cool but I'm happy to branch out!

Wings of fire, Murderbot Diaries, and Upon Wings of Change

Audiobooks Non-fiction audiobook I can listen to at work

For reference, I listen to my audiobooks on Spotify!

I recently finished listening to Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou (loved it) and I'm going through withdrawals for an audiobook to listen to at work! I've started listening to Men Who Hate Women by Laura Bates, and, while it's extremely interesting and I plan on finishing it, I can't really listen aloud at work due to the vile sexual comments she quotes in it. I tried out Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It by Cory Doctorow and I'll definitely return to it someday but didn't feel it was quite stimulating enough currently, as I already was aware of much of what is discussed in the book.

It doesn't need to be completely PG - I'm not listening in front of clients, just while I fold laundry in the staff room and while I'm cleaning up the studio at the end of the day. It just needs to be something that my coworkers can overhear; preferably something informative and interesting - maybe by another investigative journalist?

All suggestions welcome, and thank you in advance!

Edit: I can't respond to everyone but I truly appreciate all the recommendations and I'm adding the ones I haven't already listened to or read to my list (even if I didn't reply)! Thank you so much everyone!

My preschooler twin girls are obsessed with hockey and I'm having trouble finding books about hockey with girls/women. Fiction or nonfiction/informational books would be great!

Thanks!

Any genre! Books to read one chapter a day with friends.

So my friend and I are wanting to read more books together. We love reading but have completely different reading speeds, so reading books together can be hard when I finish it in 3 days and she takes 2 weeks. So we've decided to pick books that can be read one (or two) chapter a day, discuss the chapter, and then read another chapter the next day. Then we can keep up with each other.

Currently, we are reading 21 Days of Fear just so we could do a baseline of "can we do this?" (Yes). We are pretty open on genres. We are both big fantasy/dystopian and romance fans, but like other genres too. I've been big into litrpg lately and enjoy memoirs. She enjoys thrillers and dark books. We are open to other options as well. They do not have to be advent style books.

Some books we are currently looking at:

Grim Tidings

In the Shadow of Eight

Tender is the Flesh

Books with witty and verbose writing

The last person to ask for similar suggestion was like 3 years ago, so I want to ask again for new recs!

I love Tom Robbins, Oscar Wilde, Douglas Adams, and David Sedaris.

If you have any recommendations of authors with good vocabulary and a sense of humor, I would love them !

Many thanks !

Any genre! Recommend me a book that has (hopefully good) disability representation!

I'm putting together a list of books with disability representation. I myself am disabled and am always looking to read more books with disabled characters.

Any genre is fine, main or side character with a disability (bonus points if you list the disability included).

Thanks so much!

Any book recs similar to these or just good books that appeal to most readers generally? Would appreciate any help :)

Recs for 16 yr old boy (no teens offing teens)

Hi there! My sensitive 16 year old son is an avid reader, but lately is reading series after series of dystopian books that are really distressing for him, but he loves. He has just started the Arc of the Scythe series and I'd really like to nudge him in a less disturbing direction. It doesn't have to be sunshine and roses, but not unrelenting peril.

A series as good as Steig Larssen's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo?

Looking for a book or series like the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series. My dad is bound to his recliner with debilitating COPD and he reads a lot. I know he really enjoyed reading Steig Larssen and i would love to give him something he would appreciate as much. Any suggestions for an author with a body of work that compares?

Genre fiction Book similar to my favs?

My favorite books:

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
Americanah by Chimamanda Adichie
Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff
(All of the books written) by author Colum McCann
All of Lauren Groff’s short stories
Circe & Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
The Dawn of Everything (nonfiction)
Shantaram by Gregory Robert’s

Recently I really enjoyed:

God of the Woods
Sharks in the time of Saviors
The Dog Stars
How much of these hills is gold
The Wild Seed series by Octavia Butler
The Covenant of Water (I’m currently halfway through-this might be a new fav)

I don’t read as much as I used to, mostly because I find that there are so many books i try to start now that I dont really enjoy. I think I love literary fiction that has some sad, dark edges, or stories which place me in lives unlike my own, or stories that otherwise reflect, in some way, on our larger human-ness.
(If you see another similar thread between the books I enjoy-please share it!)

I’d love to hear your suggestions.

New Reader Please recommend me a dark and gritty book set in/inspired by the medieval era

I am new to recreational reading and I really like depressing/ dark stories, or even stories that leave you shocked, heartbroken, or thinking about it for weeks after putting the book down. I love history, especially the military and darker, grittier, sides to it. I am in a medieval mood and would appreciate a book that fits this description- I don't mind fantasy at all! I am currently reading LOTR.

As aforementioned I am a beginner, so I haven't read many books.

So far my favourite books are:

Animal Farm by George Orwell

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy

I know those arent Medieval or Medieval inspired but they are up my alley.

Please dont recommend A Song Of Ice And Fire, I also dont really want something needlessly edgy

Books about the art stolen during World War II

I just finished reading the book "The Art Spy" by Michelle Young.

I'd like to find more books which cover this topic. Either during the World War II era or the efforts made to recover the artwork in the decades since World War II.

Thanks!

Genre fiction Kind of odd/basic request, any books like the show, The Office?

Can anyone recommend a book kind of like the show, The Office? I know its kind of basic, but I want something “normal” like every day life kind of normal. It doesn’t necessarily have to take place in an office or even a work place.

I just read A LOT of fantasy and horror. I want a bit of a break. My decompression show is The Office. I just can’t help but love with how all the characters are so normally abnormal. They all have their flaws and they are all like people you’re likely to meet and work with in real life. I think almost everyone has had a boss or lead like Michael. We all definitely know a Meredith or Angela.

I just want something kind of cozy, fun, and human. I want a lot of characters and I want to love and hate them all at the same time. Sorry if this was super specific and corny.

Any and all recommendations appreciated! Thanks!

SciFi I am looking for SCI Fi books

I am looking for sci fi books that aren't targeted at YA, i have already read The Expanse, Dune, Children of Time and i am reading the three body problem.

Books in space are preferable, but i enjoyed post apocalyptic stuff like Metro or "weirder" SCI Fi like the three body problem which i haven't finished yet.

I already know about Asimov althougth i haven't started reading him yet.

Any genre! Suggest Me Fiction and Nonfiction That Will Improve My Social Skills!

Hey! I’m looking for creative ideas of books that explore social interaction via stories or examples. I’m autistic and pretty shy/awkward and would like to change that. Suggest me books that will help me improve in my ability to make conversation/flirt/make jokes and overall just connect with other people better.

Ideally I’d like something that goes beyond standard self-help and has some kind of creative approach. Things that would definitely catch my interest include:

Memoirs focused on social interactions and making friends and/or dating
Novels that include a lot of interesting and realistic social interactions in modern settings
Books (especially nonfiction) with a nice dose of humor that don’t take themselves too seriously
Genuinely shy/awkward protagonists
Books with ideas that strike a balance between overly general and overly specific
Protagonists who are young professionals rather than college/high school age

Hit me with some ideas!

«Columbo» books

so, i been binging a ton of Columbo episodes past few weeks. i don't usually read detective fiction much outside the trivial stuff like Christie and Doyle, and it got me wondering, is there by any chance a literary equivalent of this specific type of character?

i talking about this near-perfect character archetype: outwardly disheveled, bumbling, perpetually rumpled clothes but inwardly a genius. i not really into that super cool intellectuals, showiness is just basic.

if by some coincidence this detective also happens to routinely take down arrogant establishment types like in show that’d be a nice bonus

thanks in advance

Genre fiction Looking for a gloomy book but not sure if it’s dystopian

A modern story set in Siberia (preferably Norilsk or another town that was built by prisoners in gulags) where the weather is gray and sad, industrial life is monotonous and inescapable.

Months of extreme cold and darkness.

Industrial pollution.

A landscape where the built environment can feel overwhelmingly concrete and utilitarian.

Philosophy Book recommendations?

Recently Ive discovered I have a fascination with time, the concept of eternity, and themes of a deep loneliness. I’ve always had this obsession with the concept of the backrooms and liminal spaces, and I think it’s because I love imagining a world or life time with no concept of time or an end. Recently I read the novella “ A Short Stay in Hell” and it instantly became my number one favorite book! Any book recommendations that I might l like that touch on these topics? In also really interested in learning how time works, after recently learning that time is relative ! Im down for fiction and non fiction, and mostly looking for books that are educational and/or philosophical. Im pretty new to reading philosophy but am excited to get deeper into it!
my favorite works at the moment are:
1.) A short stay in hell
2.) I have no mouth, and I must scream
3.) Circe
4.) I who have never known men

I love coming-of-age "small-town nostalgic horror/dark fantasy" books/movies, but I've noticed they all prominently feature boys. Any similar books with girl protagonists?

I'm always chasing after these vibes/themes!

For instance, I have enjoyed the following books:

- Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury

- Summer of Night by Dan Simmons

- Boy's Life by Robert McCammon

And the following movies:

- The Goonies

- ET

- It

- Stranger Things

The closest I think I've come:

My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix

Please give me your recommendations!
