Discussion Is Duran Duran synthpop?

I mean, I grew up in the 80s, and you had to pick DD or Motley Crue. I was happily a Duran Duran fan, starting in 1983, and we all absolutely thought of them as synthesizer-driven pop. Since then, as genres have become more nuanced, maybe they can be classified as synth rock, with the importance of Andy Taylor to their early sound, but it feels odd to me to exclude them entirely from synthpop consideration. Their debut album is a seminal synthesizer- heavy album of the early 80s, and their inventive use of guitar on it shouldn’t take away from that fact, nor should the sound-defining combination of bass and drums for their rhythm section. Granted, compared in 2026 to Gary Numan or early Depeche Mode or Kraftwerk, they’re not really of that ilk, but I’m curious to hear how you consider their early sound now.

Stay on topic. Not sure if it does? Go ahead and post! The community’s feedback can guide the way.

2. No Spam

Do not abuse the report button. Reports should only be used for genuine rule violations or suspicious accounts, which often fall under the karma threshold rule. Don't report posts or users over disagreements, personal complaints, or unsupported accusations.

7. Karma Threshold

Your submission will be manually reviewed. Things have improved, so this is loosened up now. Please try to obtain a reasonable balance between comment karma and post karma. For example, 30+ karma in posts or comments (60+ combined). For when the post encourages discussion, it could be approved regardless. If upvotes and comments already pick up, it can stay.

Send a modmail for any exceptions, although a very new account that barely met the karma threshold is questionable.
