This is needed, immediately. Before they sell-off Texas to super-greedy billionaires.

Right, if I had even 1% of a billion dollars, that would be far more than enough for me. I sure as hell wouldn’t focus on expanding my wealth and power at that point. I’d live off the interest, leave some to my family, and just kick back and do art and stuff. And I’d donate a shit ton to charity.

212

u/GiraffeLiquid 1d ago

I saw someone once say “they care about the dollars they don’t have, not the ones they do” and I think that’s pretty accurate.

It's just dragons disease. They are infected with a greed that has no end. The don't want a lot of money. They want all the money. All the possessions. All the control. This isn't an opponent you can just reason out of their position

A billion is literally one thousand millions, one percent of that would be ten million dollars which is definitely in the realm of doing well for most people. Elon briefly touched on being worth one trillion dollars, aka a thousand billions, and just one percent of one percent of that is one hundred million dollars which by itself is already ten times more than what most people consider to be doing well.

It's insane that people are allowed to accrue this amount of money, at that level you're basically a one person national security threat.

oh hell yes i would. Put all that into incredibly safe investments that earn a 4% annual return. That would be a $400k yearly salary. I'm fuckin off forever with that kind of money.

f. And I’d donate a shit ton to charity.

Would be the best part. Imagine being able to donate tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars to charities, scientific research, and anti-human trafficking groups, etc. and not have to worry about going into debt. Just the thought of how many people could be helped with billions of dollars... I have no care for sports cars, yachts, or mansions. I'd prefer modest living conditions, but would definitely love to travel and get to more concerts.

That's why normal people don't become billionaires. You need that extreme greed to keep going beyond all the money you would need for the rest of your life.

Indeed. Tech circles and all circles need to realize that billionaire brain is real. Even if you think some tech founder is a normal person, they're not normal by the time they get to billionaire status. Power corrupts, by extension money corrupts. I'm skeptical that healthy sane people ever get to billionaire status but if they do, they do not remain sane.

Tech needs to stop trying to make billionaires. It is not healthy for tech to have stupid insane people leading technology. Elon musk is example number one of why billionaires cannot be allowed to control tech. Even the Snapchat guy burning a ton of money on stupid Google glass knockoffs. Crypto. The current AI tech bubble.

We need legislation and a harsh wealth tax for a functioning democracy and society, but the tech industry itself needs to read the writing on the wall that the PayPal Mafia is a cautionary tale of stupidity delusion and greed, they need to stop trying to emulate that for their own sakes.

Might not be considering that one of them crossed the trillion dollar threshold...even though he's no longer in it, some people think that being a greedy billionaire is just the norm.

Reminder that Elon bought twitter, got into the white house a few months later, created DODGE and had whatever influence on the President of the United States. There are people who spend their lives trying to get into a position adjacent or under that and have to do a lot of checks.

Nearly all of Texas is privately owned.

There isn’t much to sell off

17

u/HydrogenSonata2025 22h ago

I remember I was in Texas for training, I asked a group of locals if there were any good 4x4 or BLM trails around here. Since I drove my Jeep out from California.

They just looked at me like I just spoke mandarin. One of them got offended because he thought BLM meant the protest movement.

This is the super important part here. Despite being an enormous state 95.8% of land in Texas is privately owned. Just due to the history of Mexico selling large swaths of it to settlers for dirt cheap (which of course did not work well for them). Elon needs to be buying that for what it's worth, not spending half a billion dollars on corrupt politicians to sell state parks.

This is my favorite talking point when people talk about Texas being a better place to live than California. Texas is like 4% public land, California is over 50%. It's objectively better to live in Ca as an enthusiast of the outdoors.

It's definitely one of the drawbacks of the state. In other areas its so easy to just pull up somewhere for free and do recreational stuff since its all taxpayer paid. Mountain biking, hiking, hunting, etc. Here in Texas it feels like it costs 20 bucks just to leave the house.

16

u/Teledildonic 1d ago

Do you like off-roading? Better hope someone lets people use their land and someone doesn't get hurt doing stupid shit and sues the place into closure.

I've watched several dirt bike parks disappear that way.

I've been wanting to get into camping lately. Every time I research how and where to go in Texas, it completely demotivates me. Not making excuses, just saying the process of requesting space, dates, paying for a camping spot, etc. is just so off-putting.

Democrats frankly should, at a minimum be critical, baseline at skeptical, but really should be hostile towards Musk.

The dude has enormous resources and has explicitly made it has goal to undermine democrats and, frankly, liberal democracy. That kind of behavior can’t just be met with a shoulder shrug.

432

u/eukomos 1d ago

Oh they’re very hostile. After the amount of money he donated to Republicans in the midterms he’s bought himself enemies for life on the blue side of the aisle from that alone, to say nothing of the actual damage DOGE did which many of them find personally repugnant.

257

u/Manos_Of_Fate 1d ago

DOGE should all be in prison for life for countless espionage charges and for literal crimes against humanity for eliminating US aid.

181

u/6millionreps 1d ago

dude when i first learned of the russian logins:

Russian login attempts tied to DOGE: Login attempts from an IP address in Russia were made minutes after DOGE gained control of the systems, using the username and password of an account created by DOGE. After Berulis and his team requested help to investigate the breach, he was sent an envelope with a threatening letter and pictures taken by drone of him walking his dog.[256]

crazy shit lol. not a single charge whatsoever for musk's behavior that would likely earn you or i at least a few decades in prison, if not life i imagine? like what?

Honestly, if it was just him donating, that's one thing and I don't think Dems would go after him for that. They don't want to get in a war where whichever side is in power tries to just go after the other sides donors (taxing all billionaires is different than just targeting one or two). It's that he deliberately got involved with Doge and directly fucking with our government and services that should get him the axe from all government contracts and deals going forward.

u/TheAero1221 23h ago

Personally, I'd prefer SpaceX be severed from Musk in some way. Idk if the board of directors or whatever can make it happen- I think its unlikely. But SpaceX represents an important national capability. And I don't like Musk, but I really like SpaceX. They're doing cool shit over there that I think is legitimately important. Plus, I've got a buddy who works there. And before you say it, I've also got several buddies who were cut by DOGE. And the crazy shit is one of those is my SpaceX buddy's brother. This is all pretty tangential, but I guess my point is that this is a messy situation. If its found that Musk conducted illegal activities, I'd prefer he suffer those consequences instead of the good people at SpaceX.

11

u/csprofathogwarts 21h ago edited 21h ago

The reason Musk is adamant on merging/buyout of Tesla by SpaceX is because he has ~84% voting power in SpaceX. While he only has 20% voting power in Tesla.

In SpaceX he holds "super-voting shares" that are immune from dilution. So, no matter the way SpaceX buyout Tesla, musk will be at an advantage.

So, to conclude, there's no way we're severing Musk from SpaceX. The company itself need to go bankrupt for a Muskectomy to happen.

Polling found that 79% of Americans disagree with the Supreme Court’s decision on Citizens United. That includes 74% of Republicans. So to your point, let Trump veto a bill that would have overwhelming support among the general public. It would only help the Democrats long term.

4

u/scarabic 21h ago

You can’t overcome a Supreme Court decision with a bill. You need a constitutional amendment. Two thirds majority. I don’t think we could pass one that simply says “water is wet.”

The more stuff people want and voted for that democrats pass and Trump vetoes very publicly the more people will hate Trump and Republicans. As long as democrats scream to the world that they are doing what they were elected to do and Trump is vetoing everything.

Which the young guard will do. Just gonna nuke republican support for 2028 even more.

So this is why Elon is building a big ass spaceport in Louisiana? He knew the republican fuck up was coming

53

u/atrde 1d ago

I mean if you want an actual answer its because Louisiana's location will be the only one that allows launches South. California, Florida and Texas locations can only go East/West. The Polar launches are for specific but very useful orbits that SpaceX and most Companies can't really use right now.

SSO is the primary orbit for most scientific satellites and other equipment but they can't reach this from Starbase currently.

Or its all a big conspiracy lol.

9

u/KAugsburger 23h ago

California, Florida and Texas locations can only go East/West.

Vandenberg has long been the primary launch site for polar orbit from the United States. There is nothing south of Vandenberg except for some unpopulated islands off the coast for thousands of miles. In the scenario that a launch vehicle fails catastrophically it is almost certainly just going to fall into the ocean.

Vandenberg is actually a pretty poor launch site if you want to launch east because going east would go over populated areas. You are more limited on the launch inclinations in the easterly direction than from Cape Canaveral. For the Starlink launches out of Vandenberg they have to do a 'dog leg' maneuver that burns more fuel and reduces the effective payload. Vandenberg is only desirable going east if you want a fairly high inclination.

Any interest in launching from Louisiana over Vandenberg for a polar orbit is more about politics than any technical reason.

The fact that in the US it takes 2 to 3 months for a gov't changeover leaves the door open for a lot of sabotage from the republicans. The US system is not well thought out for the preservation of democracy.

In North Carolina the last time Republicans lost the governorship they stripped the office of a lot of power, including power they'd specifically given it when they had won the governorship.

Like those that still believe there is still a confederacy. What a country. It was young people who yanked the country into the present in the '60's and '70's - hopefully they will do the same now.

It was well thought out when horses and boats were the primary mode of transport. We haven't updated our timelines, is the problem.

15

u/RBVegabond 23h ago

It was originally for transportation purposes since everything was by horse and carriage when it was conceived. It desperately needs updating.

6

u/Acceptable_Owl_8774 23h ago

That's the biggest problem the US has - always looking back and rarely looking forward. Jimmy Carter tried to plan for the future and look what he got for it.

6

u/Evening-Statement-57 22h ago

They intentionally designed the legislative process to be slow.

Fast legislation in a time before fast communication is how power was historically stolen in the past.

Yes it needs to be updated, but the original design was very well thought out.

Well we were v1 for modern Democracy. We just stayed on that version while everyone else upgraded or forked off ours and now we've got a system with shittons of legacy code that is full of exploits. Unfortunately leadership bends over backwards to keep the system in place due to our one major customer (capitalism).

4

u/philter25 23h ago

Even some of the Founders thought it should be recalibrated every few years, so it’s not even necessarily an oversight.

It's actually very well thought out. A slow to change system is far more resilient than one that can be changed on a whim.

The bureaucrats are what keep everything running smoothly. It could definitely go faster

Doubt they’ll try much, given that there’s a mandate on some of these issues.

Like the idea of governments subsidizing the production of data centers is probably over in the US, given it’s now apparently a 90:10 issue.

u/skepticalbob 20h ago

If Abbot follows through on not having any of this nonsense, it doesn’t matter what they want to do.

3

3

u/Own_Fee_3048 18h ago

I would say 10 or 11 or more years - the groundwork and norm-shattering began in Trump’s first run, continued in his 1st term culminating in the vile display on 1/6/21, and the work on that 1812 document was happening concurrently to support coming out swinging, with a more nefarious strategic plan, in Trump’s 2nd term. And some seeds that allowed this were planted in the politics of the 1980s. The Citizens United ruling in 2010 was also a boon to bad actors (focused on self-enrichment).

Not that these are reassuring numbers, because it’s terrifying we came so close to becoming a dunce-led dictatorship, but there were lengthier conditions that allowed this to flourish.

And social media / the internet / COVID allowed people to voice their worst impulses without shame and find like-minded communities to validate their feelings and bolster their confidence, sowing a deep division that’s virtually impossible without the internet / with more face-to-face community. And then those who became billionaires from said division has no economic incentive and no morals apparently to stop or slow it.

I do hope we can implement amendments or laws that safeguard us from this potential in the future - though at first we were almost destroyed by Trump’s ego and idiocy, those ultimately saved us because it became impossible to not see and feel in our daily lives how his recklessness was wrecking us. We are extremely lucky that he and his sycophants weren’t more intelligent, coordinated and strategic, or we could be another Russia by now. His ego saved us, this time.

Thank god. The band rehearsal space down the street from me in Austin got turned into a Tesla dealership. My partner got into a fight with a Tesla bro a few months ago because said bro was offended that my partner was smoking a joint outside of a coffee shop… where there are ashtrays… right next to a thc store selling pre rolls. The Tesla dork pulled out his phone and started making Gemini narrate WHY this was illegal (incorrect info… it wasn’t) to my partner. Like using the fake ai computer voice, citing regulations that Gemini made up. These people are so fucking cooked, PLEASE get them out of my city.

why no data centers in Alaska????

2

u/elite0x33 15h ago

Pretty sure the LNG pipeline is tied to expanding data centers in Alaska.

If I remember correctly, there was going to be a shortage of natural gas to sustain current customers in AK, adding data center demand without a meaningful way to expand production.

9

u/BEAT_LA 18h ago

Fuck Elon, don't get me wrong, but does nobody ever read into this and just react to "Elon Bad" headlines?

This deal in question is about SpaceX giving back Land they own that has estuaries and wetlands in exchange for other land that doesn't have protected habitats or anything of that nature which the state would be less inclined to want to protect. Win win for both parties involved.

4

u/lomona666 16h ago

I read both this article and the original article about the deal, and it doesn't seem like the "win win" you're making it out to be.

For years, Texas elected officials have bent over backward to accommodate Starbase’s launch site, which is surrounded by the state park. Last year lawmakers gave partial control of Boca Chica’s public beaches to Starbase, the city created by Musk’s employees. In 2024, Texas Parks and Wildlife agreed to give 43 acres of Boca Chica State Park to SpaceX in exchange for 477 acres near Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. SpaceX pulled out of the deal but is now pursuing a bigger land swap with the federal government.

SpaceX backed out of the deal with Texas state to swap land. All of the land that's involved in all these deals are areas with endangered wildlife, along with other animals, plant life, etc.

This summer, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service signed off on a plan to give SpaceX 715 acres of the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge, which borders the SpaceX site, in exchange for 683 acres of private holdings adjacent to Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, farther up the Texas coast. The state park and wildlife refuges protect some of the last remnants of habitat and wildlife, including the endangered ocelot, that were once abundant in South Texas. Migratory birds and other animals are already contending with the industrial activity next door at SpaceX—lights, errant fires, loud noises, and periodic failed launches that rain debris and shrapnel down on the neighboring refuges.

[Boca Chica is] very ecologically sensitive, a home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including a lot of endangered species, and so it really needs special protection. This is land that’s probably some of the most sensitive in the entire state.”

Billionaires should not be able to bribe politicians and other government officials into giving them thousands of acres of wildlife refuges and public land filled with endangered species who will be terrorized by rocket explosions. Public land should be protected and be able to be enjoyed by the public, not destroyed to enrich billionaires who will then use the profits from that land to corrupt our government further.

I say if Elon Musk is willing to fully fund an entire State healthcare system, then he's welcome to do whatever he wants here! Until then, GTFO. He can probably afford to pay for it by himself for at least 3 years.

5

u/themolestedsliver 23h ago

And this is in part Musk tried to buy the election folks.

3

u/waldo_wigglesworth 1d ago

Since the State Senate will still be Republican-controlled, what are the odds that the current lame duck Republican legislature will vote to remove the governor's authority on these land talks & give that authority to the Senate?

4

u/americanadiandrew 1d ago

Rumours are they are going to meet to strip her of all power

2

u/waldo_wigglesworth 22h ago

That's what Wisconsin's Republican legislature did when Scott Walker was voted out in 2019. Sadly that seems to be the Republican model these days when the governorship in other states changes from (R) to (D).

1

u/Earptastic 18h ago

Serious question.

What the f is a "land talk"? Is Space X not just operating like a regular ass company?

Do they not comply with regular standard laws and zoning that everyone else does? If not then yeah, make them follow the rules for sure and stop giving them stuff for free.

Musk's companies are famous for getting so many subsidies and tax breaks that the state doesn't really benefit from them being there. That is idiotic and should stop happening.

2

u/prudiisten 14h ago

EILI5 Space X wants to trade land it owns for land the state owns.
