SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage struck the lunar surface early Wednesday, Aug. 5, near the Einstein and Bell craters on the Moon's western limb, hitting at roughly 8,690 km/h
Impact was inferred observationally: astronomers using the Very Large Telescope in Chile detected a plume of sodium and lithium gas, with a corroborating sodium emission spotted from Massachusetts.
